"In mid-December, a West Hollywood newcomer emerged inside the former Gold Coast Bar, located across the street from Connie & Ted’s called Or Bar (or means gold in French). The bar is a welcome addition after Southern California lost many historic queer bars over the last three years, including the 40-year-old Gold Coast in 2020, as well as Flaming Saddles, Oil Can Harry’s, and Rage. Or Bar’s co-owners overhauled Gold Coast’s dated interior into a fresh and modern lounge with smoky-colored walls, and opulent touches of Art Deco with black, gold, and bronze throughout. The walls include works from artists including a Ken Price original silkscreen print. At the center, a stunning chandelier hovers over the bar area designed by Or Bar partner and former Fashion Police co-host George Kotsiopoulos. 'It’s custom-made for the bar and it has 3,700 pieces of crystal,' says Kotsiopoulos. 'The three of us: Rob, Stephanie, and myself were on 12-foot ladders for seven days hanging [the crystals].' Kotsiopoulos is referring to his business partners Rob Novinger — who also owns the revamped Circus of Books bookstore — and entrepreneur Stephanie Schestag (who goes by Stevie), who took over Or Bar’s space in 2021. Though Kotsiopoulos and Novinger conceptualized the design for Or Bar, they enlisted Solrac Architects to assist with the execution. Or Bar’s menu serves twists on classic cocktails, like the Or 54, the bar’s take on the French 75. There’s also a New Fashioned (made with Bulleit rye whiskey, Cointreau, blood orange honey, cherries, and orange bitters) to go along with beer, wine, and non-alcohol options. Light snacks are also available. The partners are aware that they are taking over a beloved spot. In the opening weeks, they experienced pushback on the pricing of the drinks. After listening to input, the owners quickly decided to lower prices that would be more in line with other bars in the neighborhood. Well drinks start at $13 and specialty cocktails range from $16 to $22. 'Most of the people that come here used to come to the Gold Coast,' says Kotsiopoulos. 'They understand [that] this neighborhood is not the same neighborhood that it was when Gold Coast opened in 1983, or in 1974 when Lillian’s was here. Our goal was to be a new kind of queer modern bar, a bit more upscale and a bit more polished, where you can sit and chat and meet friends.' Or Bar’s operating hours are from Monday to Wednesday from 4 p.m. until midnight, Thursday through Saturday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., and Sunday from 2 p.m. to midnight." - Mona Holmes

"Oil Can Harry’s now former landlord is one Monte Overstreet, the same man who owns the building that formerly housed key West Hollywood queer spaces like Flaming Saddles, Gold Coast, and the 37-year-old club Rage." - Mona Holmes

"Most likely referred to you by your scream-crying friend as “Ugh, Old Coast?!,” it’s no secret that this place attracts a more mature crowd. But it’s still a good place to pick up a drink. Gold Coast has been open for well over 400 years and is littered with regulars being served by bartenders who will straight up not look at you. And that’s refreshing. But unfortunately, that man in the mauve turtleneck just blew you a kiss, so it’s time to go." - Brant Cox

This bar has been here for what seems like forever. Longevity equals success though and while the Gold Coast is very unassuming, it has always attached a good sized crowd on the weekends and is a friendly neighborhood type of bar. The crowd is slightly older than what you might find at the larger dance clubs West of La Cienega but there is a lot less attitude and a very much more friendly vibe here. Drink prices are reasonable and there isn't a cover charge so it is also friendly on your wallet. If you haven't been here yet, give it a try some weekend. It might not replace your favorite bar around the San Vicente area but you might be surprised by how much fun a change of venue can be every now and then.

Good bar to fall into. Bartender was nice, Dim lit, easy to get a drink, some people were with friends like normal folk, but for a small bar there were several people just sitting by themselves not talking or maybe even drinking, it was kinda strange... also the bathroom smells like a barn.

Great neighborhood bar! This is one of our first stops when we visit West Hollywood. The drinks are strong and inexpensive...which is nice since most WeHo bars have drink prices that rival a small car payment! Billy and Greg are our two favorite bartenders and will treat you right. Stop by and say hi!

So fun. A bit of a San Francisco Castro-district vibe. Great staff and wicked good karaoke on Sunday's. So glad they installed dartboards now - and the original cigar store Indian is still there, facing the DJ booth. Don't ever miss the midsummer RED DRESS PARTY!

My favorite gay bar in LA by a long shot. The bar tenders are all super friendly. They have a jukebox and a DJ on Friday and Saturday nights. Reasonable prices. Good happy hour. And it's usually the type of crowd you can strike up a conversation with if you're flying solo.

Cozy place, catered to gay community, but no one else is turned away. They only have Budweiser and Bud Lite on draft, everything else on tap. Full bar. Music box and pool tables available.

THIS place is one of the few places left in weho worth going! You will meet actual human beings in this place. One of the best places to hang if you don't need to be surrounded by 12-year-old gay twinks. Also one of the best places to hang on PRIDE!

I have been going to the Gold Coast in the 80’s 90’s and 2000s. Always had a good time! My friends are gone and so many good memories are left I wish everyone a wonderful time at the Gold Coast!! Best place in town to meet with friends❤️👍🍸🥂
