Today was my first time eating out since starting a diet, and I was honestly nervous… but the smell of this place had been haunting me for hours while walking around downtown SLO. I finally gave in and walked in, and was immediately greeted with a big, genuine smile.
I really appreciated the option to order meat à la carte, so I went with half a chicken for about $13. The food came out fast, which was perfect because my kids decided they wanted the Italian place across the way (not exactly diet-friendly). I grabbed an outdoor bench and dug in.
The moment I picked up the drumstick, the meat and skin literally fell right off the bone. It came with pickled onions, jalapeño, pickles, and BBQ sauce (I chose spicy — highly recommend). It was the perfect “first meal out” and didn’t feel like a compromise at all.
To top it off, the owner came by, remembered my name, and asked how the chicken was. I was a little shy, covered in BBQ sauce with a greasy smile, but I managed to tell him it was awesome.
Can’t wait to come back.
