Four Restaurant Pros on the Lessons Learned in 2020 | Eater

"A six-week dessert pop-up hosted at an East Village restaurant that leveraged the host venue’s devoted weekly following to build its own audience; the pop-up’s guests enthusiastically followed the chef to a subsequent Williamsburg pop-up, illustrating how ephemeral, low-overhead projects can create deep relationships with regulars and serve as a pathway toward sustainable brick-and-mortar opportunities." - Patty Diez

Google
This is a great little spot. The sushi is a bit atypical, I believe it's owned or at least run by a Thai couple, and they put a cultural twist on the menu that I found to be very pleasant. All of the food was excellent, and the menu is diverse and enticing. They also have a diverse selection of bottled drinks that I have rarely seen in the States, and I was very happy to have some tea that I wouldn't normally get here. I went during a downtime between normal meal hours and was basically the only one there. The staff was very attentive and friendly. I will definitely be back and can't wait to try more of the menu. Located in a strip mall area, it has plenty of parking and is easily accessible. This is definitely a spot that is family-friendly and welcoming.

Google
Nice quiet restaurant in a shopping center near Publix. We looked for something non chain and close by. Had Pork Fried Rice with Mido soup and chicken udon.

Erik Montgomery

Google
Absolutely hands down the best sushi and sashimi I have had in a long time. Gold taste delivers on every level with every dish. The atmosphere is perfect and you can feel the care and authenticity they imbue into their cuisine. 10/10 all around.

Google
This probably was my worst take out experience in my whole life. I want to start by saying that the lady working there was very kind and pleasant. The food and timing of service were absolutely horrible. We waited an hour for our food with nobody inside the restaurant or 0 phone calls while we were there for Togo orders. The price was $91 before any gratuity. Extremely disappointing and will never return.

Google
I ordered 2 rolls of sushi. A spicy crab and a spicy tuna. One ended up being a California roll, no biggie, still has crab in it. I asked for spicy for both. Both came drowned in a very sweet yum yum type sauce on them. No spicy to be found. Way too sweet and couldn’t eat it. $22 for food wasted.

Google
Excellent food at a reasonable price. We had 7 people and two tables were available. Like the chair covers...easy to clean. Had the beef rice bowl (delish) and spouse had the teriyaki scallops (amazing)! Always enjoy the food here. Highly recommend!!

Google
Such friendly and warm people that work here. The menu is unique and has more sushi roll (maki) options than anywhere else I’ve seen, including some really creative special rolls. The quality of fish itself is nothing special but tastes fresh / not fishy. Also a nice variety of cooked dishes from teriyaki to udon noodles. Seems like they do a popular takeout business.

Google
This little place is fantastic! We were vacationing in Williamsburg for 3 days and ended up eating dinner there twice because it was so good. If we lived in the area, we'd be eating here weekly.

Yelp
I came here on a whim, was hungry before dinner and just wanted to grab a roll. The restaurant was clean and their service was prompt and friendly. I got a basic roll with shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, cucumber and cream cheese and they had no problem making a custom roll for me. I had it to go and it was fresh and delicious. I will go back for the full experience soon.

Yelp
The good: Service- friendly and efficient It's clean inside and they have about 7 booths for seating. All booths can sit about 4 adults Enjoyed the shrimp tempura hand roll. Liked that they offered low-sodium and regular soy sauce. My friend seemed to like her tempura shrimp over sushi rice. The bad: Did not like the vegetable yaki soba! Not good at all, weird texture and not like any I had ever tried before. The Japanese egg drop soup was not flavorful at all! Don't know if I would go back.

Yelp
This is a small quaint place in Monticello Marketplace. It gets busy and there's not a lot of sitting room but most people get carry-out. With that being said, it took a very long time for everything. I don't know if that's normal. They have fun small Japanese Ramune sodas which kids enjoy but it's less than 7oz so have them drink it slowly. There are a decent amount of food options to choose from. We ordered fried calamari because we were hungry and wanted something quickly but it took about 25 minutes to get it and that was long for the small amount we received. We also ordered fried rice to help us fill up a bit quicker because we were very hungry and that came out alone about 20 minutes after the calamari. The fried rice was okay but seemed wetter and was bland. We waited about another 15 minutes for the Green River Row to come out. It was decent. Later, the Sakura Garden came out and that was quite tasty! I ordered the Rainbow Dragon and that came out last about 10 minutes after the Green River Row. I wasn't a big fan of how one order came out at a time and then waiting and waiting for more food. Several small groups of people left while others waited it out. There's no salad or soup that comes with your order so that's disappointing. I am used to places that offer those as part of an order. For what you're paying, it feels like a reasonable expectation. Overall, it's a very pleasant eating experience but don't come here if you're already hungry. The service is way too lax than most places I'm used to. I wouldn't come back because of the long wait and the way one item was brought out at a time. I noticed a couple that seemed to be regulars so I have to assume there are usually better days but I'm a little doubtful. I was surprised with the lack of service and the ridiculous wait. I hope the place hires more people.

Yelp
Came here alone because of a situation with my family. The menu was full of amazing-looking food and I eventually settled on shoyu ramen, which ended up exceeding my already high expectations. The people there were very nice and the restaurant interior looked great. Although I was one of just two people eating at the time, I really hope many more will be there whenever I decide to return.

Yelp
Food was excellent , and our server was very friendly and helpful. BUT price wound up being a bit steep. We ordered: Maguro Ninja - Tuna, Black Pepper, Avocado, Asparagus inside, wrapped with Tuna Slices, Red Chili Sauce & Cilantro 17 Alaska Maki - we had Salmon with Avocado - 10 Masago(Capelin Roe) nigiri - 7 Sea Urchin(Uni) nigiri - mkt Green Tea - 4 Our bill came to $61.05. So, near as I can determine. 2 pieces of uni were @ $18. I like Uni, and I get market prices, but that was a bit of a shock. Other than that, another excellent meal.

Yelp
A pleasant surprise. Was binging for some sushi and found Gold Taste. At first sight, was concerned as it is in a small strip center. Then I opened the door and it had a great vibe. Well decorated, with upbeat music and a great offering on the menu. The sushi and the Ramen were spot on and the service was excellent. Will definitely be coming back to try more items on the menu .

Yelp
We had an early dinner at Gold Taste and left full for the rest of the night. The seating and ambiance is not much to brag about, but that's not what I came for. The beverages are all in bottles, which I appreciate as more sanitary. We ordered two rolls and Tuna Tataki. There's a lot of different options to pick from regarding rolls and nigiri and sashimi. The rolls are a little over priced but given the quality of the sushi, I wasn't upset about it. There's also more options that are reasonably priced for two people to share. Our server was very kind but not over bearing. We look forward to coming here more often and trying more options on the menu. Overall not bad.

Yelp
Must be expensive uni because we didn't ask the price as my hubby was so happy to see the sign outside notifying customers that they had it. So he ordered it and I got two pieces of masago. The masago cost about $7 and I added on an Alaskan maki Salmon roll for 10. Also had hot green tea on this cold blustery lunchtime, which was matcha for $4. All perfectly delicious again. Hubby had Maguro Ninja: tuna wrapped around avocado and it had scallions with cilantro on top. We traded half way through our meals. The total bill was a shocking $76. Obviously those two uni pieces were not worth the cost. We love the convenience of this location, how clean it is, and how friendly the owner(?) is who has served us this time again so likely will be back, but we have learned to ask for the price first. Expensive lesson learned; we don't get an itemized bill, just a total tab to settle by the way.

Yelp
Service was great and attentive. The ambiance was comfortable and clean. But the sushi was fantastic. We highly recommend - spider maki, Mount fuji and the super deluxe. We will be regulars!

Yelp
Never thought we'd stop for sushi while on vacation in Williamsburg, but I'm so glad we did! The tuna was incredibly fresh--it almost felt like I was back in Japan enjoying sushi. The staff were warm and welcoming, and the calming music added to the relaxing atmosphere. Surprisingly, the vegetable sushi roll was a huge hit with the kids--it's not often they get that excited about sushi! If you're in Williamsburg and craving sushi, this spot is a must-visit.

Yelp
Absolutely the best sushi I've had in 12 States... A bit of a drive from Busch Gardens, but if you are traveling to historic Jamestown or you're within 15-20 miles of this place... Make a quick detour because you won't find a fresher, cleaner, tastier place around.

Jahmelia B.

Yelp
I stopped in here to grab dinner with a friend. The inside isn't much to look but the service is great! Our server was so kind and doted on us throughout the duration of our meal. The menu was overwhelming. There were lots of pages with lots of choices. I couldn't keep up and ended up getting a basic California roll and spicy tuna roll. Both were good. If you are a coffee with your dinner kind of person than this place is for you. They have delicious coffee.

Stephen M.

Yelp
The food was great, tasty and not too salty. And the service was so attentive. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
A very nice restaurant with kind & respectful staff! Seemed very traditional. Not the regular bento box I'm used to. They had cut apples, 2 pieces of shrimp tempura, seaweed salad, and 10 piece spicy tuna. Every thing on my plate was a 10/10. The tuna was the better than what's offered in my area! Their seaweed salad and tempura was seasoned!! Hear me out a lot of other places do not season their tempura so this was great for me! I was disappointed in their egg drop soup! It wasn't the best! The inside is pretty normal & everything is very clean!! They have a very full menu.. A little overwhelming..I mean from top to bottom filled!! It was a lot to take in, but I'll definitely be back to try more!

Greg W.

Yelp
My favorite place to eat. Given a choice of where to eat. I always chose Gold Taste. The sushi rolls are a work of art. The atmosphere is very cozy and friendly

Yelp
Excellent! Great Sushi Rolls! Great presentation! So very Good! My kids love Sushi we can one day and was closed. Came back the next Day and open. They took our big group immediately. As good as this place it was not busy.

Yelp
As we approached this establishment there was a sign that included their HUGE menu and writing that said patrons who plan to take out or plan on dining in should call their number to put in an order or to be seated. We were on a time crunch so we called for take out. They said the food would take 30 minutes which seemed long compared to other take out places. But we chose to wait. After I placed our order a couple knocked on the door to be seated. 45 minutes later we went to pick up our food, it wasn't ready...they were "working on it" however the couple that dined in and placed their order AFTER ours were paying their bill. In total we waited a little over an hour and the food was not worth the time or money. The spider roll was the worse I've had, it had too much sauce and the soft shell crab was fried too hard so it had no taste, just crunch. The fried rice was bland, it also had corn in it which I'm not used to. And the shrimp temporary ramen was very underwhelming. On a positive note the person that took my order was very friendly and warm.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
A bit pricey, but the food was tasty and served quickly. My son and I weren't in the mood for sushi, so we both had shrimp fried rice and beef fried rice. It satisfied our Asian craving, but it wasn't over the moon phenomenal.

Yelp
Wow! This is the best food I've had in Williamsburg. The sushi is fantastic and the service was excellent. The wait staff are so friendly and conversational. We had the Mount Fuji roll (my favorite) and I highly recommend that one. We also had the Unagi Special and the Spider Maki roll. The rolls are delicious and so filling. They really give you a lot of food. They play very cute and sweet music in the background and it's such a peaceful experience. We have eaten at some of the most popular restaurants in Williamsburg and none of them were as good as this place. I wish I could give 10 stars and up their average. You have to try this place if you love sushi and are in Williamsburg.

Rebecca T.

Yelp
I was so excited to find a true Japanese restaurant in the Williamsburg area. Japanese food is my favorite cuisine and finding a restaurant that is authentic was a challenge. I had the Unagi Don #2 that was perfectly prepared and a large portion. My partner had the beef bowl and he loved it. I can't wait to return and try more. I intend to be a regular diner. This is a quaint clean little restaurant with the nicest staff. You can't go wrong for a truly Japanese experience.

Yelp
I love supporting local businesses ran by people who take such pride in what they do and the product that they serve. Everybody as Gold Taste has been so sweet and nice towards us every time I have been there and they go out out of their way to make you feel welcome. The building itself is on a corner store in a busy shopping center that houses Target, Publix, and so forth. I like that once you step into Gold Taste, the window decorations and ambience allow you to escape from the bustle of the shopping complex and into a warm, classic, nostalgic feeling Japanese restaurant. The place is nothing fancy, but clean and homey. The menu is quite large and they are able to produce quite a few different types of rolls and dishes. I have sampled quite a few items from the menu and all of them have been excellent, which is impressive to me given the variation of items. On top of the quality being high, the plating is artful and pleasing to the eye and they even have appealing and cute glassware. Stop by Gold Taste if you want some lovely sushi or other lovely Japanese dishes!

Yelp
THE. BEST. Sushi we've ever had It's a small privately owned business that loves what the do. And it shows The sushi, and we've had plenty, melts in your mouth. It's fresh It's fabulous Just go
google avatar

Bernie S.

Yelp
Be prepared for an excruciatingly long wait. About an hour before the first food came out.
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
I have lived in Williamsburg for nearly 25 years. This is easily, easily the best sushi in town. They run a small restaurant and I believe there are only three employees so sometimes it can take time on takeout orders. Usually 45-60 minutes is typical. Plan ahead. This is not fast food but it is fresh and made with care. So be patient, it is worth it!

Yifei Z.

Yelp
This is my go-to sushi place in Williamsburg. The food is so great (sushi, noodles, rice bowls etc.), never had a dish that I didn't like. Personal favorite dish is golden dynamite. The lady who owns the restaurant is always so nice and polite and gives out excellent service.

TJ V.

Yelp
Tasteless and very bland food. So disappointing. High prices for very small portions. Everything was terrible: miso soup, veggie fried rice, veggie and tofu rice bowl and the chicken katsu (not crispy at all like it's supposed to be and drenched in a bad sauce). Maybe the sushi is ok but don't order their food! SUPER SLOW service. We dined in and it took over an hour to get our food and we were the only ones there.
google avatar

Tom H.

Yelp
We found the food to be excellent... The taste preparation was done well. The sushi was fresh and had great taste. Service was really good. Very conscientious. Very clean establishment. Thank you very much. I get home we will be back! We do like to support our local businesses in our town.

Alexandra S.

Yelp
These sushi rolls were so delicious, very fresh! Our waitress was just the sweetest, and even though it's small it's gorgeous inside.

Tom T.

Yelp
We enjoyed dinner at Gold Taste before and returned today . The food and service today were totally outstanding. Food was so well prepared by a quality Chef and kitchen staff and the Server was very pleasant and efficient . Thanks, Tom & Elaine

Yelp
I stopped on a whim after dropping off packages at nearby UPS. The menu was extensive and everything looked delicious. I settled on the Gold Don Bowl with tuna, salmon, tilapia, and mango with a spicy sauce. Outstanding! I also ordered a yummy mango roll! What a surprise for a first visit but it won't be my last.

Stephen G.

Yelp
Some of the best sushi I have ever had. Tuna lovers was amazing. The restaurant was also very clean. Staff very friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Alaina L.

Yelp
Sushi rolls were super fresh and the eel unagi don was delicious! Definitely recommend eating here!
google avatar

Chera L.

Yelp
This place is awesome. I'm bummed that some of these reviews are complaining about superfluous things like the menu being large and the sushi chefs in the back. Who cares when the sushi is AMAZING? My dad and I meet halfway here for lunch often and we have never been disappointed. We've tried the sea urchin, quail egg, various caviar and a ton of sushi rolls at this point. We always get a unique experience with fresh, never fishy food and absolutely amazing service. My dad and I have been known to be sushi snobs... and we both agree this is one of the best!
google avatar

Ethel C.

Yelp
Portion was very good for nigiri and special rolls. Very fresh and the service was great. We had the ramen and it was very good too! Great find on our stop through Wburg!
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
I had high hopes. The staff are very friendly. When I called to order, my first question was if the chicken fried rice was made with white meat. The lady responded that white meat is all they use. I highly doubt that. We ended up ordering the chicken fried rice, fried spring rolls, and teriyaki chicken. The spring rolls were mushy, the soup that came with it was atrocious. The teriyaki chicken and fried rice were not bad, but about on par with something like Panda Express. The chicken was pretty tough in all of it. Not the worst Asian takeout ever, but not great.
google avatar

Beau P.

Yelp
Gas station sushi comes to mind! We used to love this place but it has gone downhill. We ordered tonight and it took well over and hour and a half... we figured it was probably just busy. Nope empty, and they didn't have to nerve to apologize for being behind. And the sushi if you want to call it that was terrible. The edamame was pre shelled?? And un-edible! And the only taste in the rolls was the heavy sauce. Zero stars!
google avatar

LaCora H.

Yelp
Informal choice for sushi + ramen. Small but mighty. Menu has numerous options from starters to entrees to sushi. The ramen (ordered with medium spice) was bold and delicious. Service is not fast but the wait is worth it. Our hostess was polite and wore a smile the entire time. Roasted green tea is yummy too.
google avatar

Trinity S.

Yelp
Nice aura but the place was very inflated with booths and not enough eye space. The bathrooms as I was told by my gf were dirty as ever that she wanted to leave but we had already order OUR 30$$$ SUSHI. To describe the sushi it was not to cold or too warm and you only get 6...the vitamin water I ordered was also expired. Best part about eating here was the music and the fact they gave me cut up nori snack wrap as asked which is why my rating is 3 instead of 2. Worst part is waiting for food to be readyI was hungryyy, took about 15-20 minutes to be ready.
google avatar

Monica P.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem of Williamsburg ambiance is relaxing and chill. They play some nice lounge music and the decor is very tasteful. Service was also good. Food excellent!
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
Great sushi, but if you're ordering takeout, be prepared to wait quite a while We were told 1-1.5 hours when we ordered and are going on hour 3 of waiting.
google avatar

Kalie M.

Yelp
Best sushi I have had in all of the hampton roads area. Tastes very fresh! Would definitely recommend the unagi royal roll. I tried the beef and rice bowl and I didn't like it. Was very over priced. I just stick with sushi when I order here. Even the other reviews mostly talk about how good the sushi is.
google avatar

Douglas B.

Yelp
Lovely service, and excellent Sushi. Our kids enjoyed the noodles as well. Ambience is nice, but come for the food.

Jordan P.

Yelp
This place is amazing. The place was recommended by an extended family member and did not disappoint. My family and I went for a late lunch. The food was excellent and the staff was very pleasant. Would 100% go back.
google avatar

Hannah W.

Yelp
Went to this place for the first time last night. The sushi was amazing and the lady who served us was the sweetest. Great service.
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
Had a large order for Friday August 20 2021. Several sushi rolls, soups and appetizer along with Bento box. While the food was good, but the portions were very small, a entree we were overcharged for was left out. Overall overpriced and we had over an hour wait to get food after calling the order in. Only take out and you cannot go into the restaurant and have to call to get someone at the door. Menu prices are not correct. Many places are better than this, will not eat there again.

Gail I.

Yelp
Menu confusing. Long wait for the food and when we got the food. It was bland Was Not impressed. Won't be back

Heather B.

Yelp
Delicious!!! So welcoming and kind. Food was AMAZING!! California Roll is what I got it was perfect it really hit the spot!!
google avatar

Mandy H.

Yelp
This place totally exceeded my expectations! I'm from Southern California so I'm spoiled when it comes to sushi availability and quality. Tucked back by honey butters in the target parking lot, you'd miss it if you weren't looking. Huge menu that's reasonably priced and everything I've tried (bowls, rolls, soup) has been delicious. They aren't super quick, so order ahead if you're in a rush, but it's worth it! Service is always very friendly too.

Jennifer J.

Yelp
Nope, Just....nope. HUGE menu! Too much! Prices were high. Decided to play it safe with a bento box. The spicy salmon roll was fine. Shrimp tempura was NOT tempura at all. Waited 30 minutes for the waitress to return so I could ask for the sauce to dip tempura into- she brought sweet and sour. Apple pieces came with my bento. Service was really slow and no other customers! Not the worst place, but I'll never go back.
