The Home Fries at Golden Diner Put All Other Home Fries to Shame | Bon Appétit

"Chef Sam Yoo’s home fries are exceedingly crispy—audibly crunching on each bite—while maintaining a buttery, soft interior, a sensation the writer compares to eating a potato chip and a spoonful of mashed potatoes at once. Served on a breakfast plate with two fried eggs and well-buttered toast and even layered into a scallion milk-bun breakfast sandwich, they’re essentially chopped-up French fries (or flat hash-brown cakes) made from Idaho potatoes. The preparation is multi-day and painstaking: potatoes are shredded, rinsed three times, brined in a salt-vinegar solution to break down the flesh and add a slight tang (“helps it taste more like a McDonald’s hash brown,” Yoo says), steamed, pressed into trays and weighted overnight so the starches bind into cakes, then portioned, deep-fried, and chopped to achieve that perfect crunch. Because of this meticulous method, the result is superior home fries that the author recommends lining up for rather than trying to replicate at home." - BySarah Jampel

Google
Sunday morning breakfast. This was a great choice. Cute diner downtown Goden, what's not to love. My biggest complaint would be I like diners to have a quaint, simplicity about them. A feel-good spot, if you know what I mean. I don't feel like The Golden Diner had that vibe. However, what they lack in grandma's kitchen feel they make up for with their food. I had the Dude. It was a HUGE portion. It was delicious. I like my green chili to have a bit more spice than the chili had but there were very solid flavors. I also had a side of smoked brisket sausage.... YES!!! That was 100% the highlight of my meal. the portion was generous, and the smoke flavor was incredible. My partner got the chicken fried steak. The gravy had to have been made in house (we found our diner, grandma comfort). It was exactly what you want from gravy. The chicken fried steak appeared to be hand breaded. If it wasn't they do good at what they do. Let's also not forget the mimosa. Go, go get a mimosa and smoked brisket sausage. Come back and thank me later.

Google
The donut holes (with strawberry & vanilla dip) were bite-sized joy grenades. The Reuben? Melt-in-your-mouth perfection. Pancakes were fluffy enough to double as pillows, and the hash browns had the crispiness of a golden sunset. Friendly staff, cozy vibes, and food that made me question every past breakfast decision. I’ll be back… probably tomorrow

This was my first time here. When I was nearly done, I got a chance to speak to the owner, David. Very passionate owner, the food was delicious. I love a proper gravy, not just flour and milk and grease, this is an actual recipe with delicious taste. The chicken fried steak was hot and crispy, everything, including the service was fantastic

Google
6.5/10. Braised pork and eggs Ben were pretty tasty! Good job on hollandaise sauce, and pork was seasoned well. Fried potato was crunchy and delightful to have with some hot sauce and pork. Service was slightly frantic yet slow, a most peculiar combination. Noise was a typical diner loudness, everyone’s trying to talk a bit louder than the next table. Great food, sub par service, might come back if it’s empty.

Google
THIS is what every town really needs. A diner. I was a little hesitant to stop as we were in hurry but i was a little hungry and so we stopped and had french fries and gravy and good lord that gravy was EVERYTHING!!!!!!!! Would highly reccomend that french fries or biscuits. Service was excellent too!

Google
Great service and awesome food. Pricing is fair. I had the burrito and it was really good. Their brisket sausage is really something special. Also, very cool art work!

Google
Amazing atmosphere, friendly staff but, the food was lackluster in my opinion. I ordered the breakfast burrito and my friend the chicken fried steak. They were good just not as good as I would’ve expected and hopped for

Google
Good breakfast, fair prices, the balls donuts are delicious specially the cream, service is good and places clean, however the bathroom need some improvement, they look old, parking is a bit difficult since the place is close tk downtown.

Yelp
"Do you want donut holes to start with?" I am so glad we said yes. I ate my couple of warm holes full of sugar and cinnamon; Hubby dipped in the strawberry jam. Such a treat. We enjoyed our hot-cooked breakfast. The food was tasty. The service was definitely top notch. It was a Friday morning during an area festival, but we were seated right away. A parking garage was behind the diner, we found street parking just out front. Definitely a place we would come back to.

Yelp
This was our first to the Golden Diner. We've eaten in a number of restaurants in Golden but wanted to try something new and different. My wife ordered the Reuben which was just so -so. Appeared to be made with deli sliced corned beef (lunch meat style corned beef). She upgraded from fries to a side salad for $2.25. The side salad was a nice sized portion. Wife said sandwich was OK but she wouldn't order it again. I ordered the Cuban grilled cheese which was their interpretation of a Cubano. Came with ham, pork, pickles and cheese served on sourdough. It was very good. I would order it again. Service was excellent. Restrooms were reasonably clean. Dining room was clean.

Yelp
This was a great diner. The food was awesome and the atmosphere was very fun. Service was good too.

Yelp
Cute little place, kind of old diner vibes meets modern diner. We had a pretty basic breakfast, wasn't anything fancy (which my husband prefers).

Yelp
An old friend came into town and I wanted a relaxing place where we could sit and catch up. I liked the ambiance of a diner because I know the coffee will keep flowing, so we picked this one. Our server, Heather was cool about us camping out at one of her tables. Though the place was busy, she kept our coffee cups full and delivered us a delicious breakfast when we were ready. She was very attentive to our needs. I had the Hobo. It was a different twist on a common breakfast plate. It had scrambled eggs and cheese, onions, green peppers, diced tomatoes and hash brown potatoes. But instead of mixing the eggs with the cheese and vegetables then serving hash browns on the side, the vegetables were mixed together with the hash browns and the scrabbled eggs put on top of that mixture and then cheese on top of the eggs. I usually leave most of my hash browns, but because they were mixed with the vegetables, they complimented the mixture. It was really different, and very tasty!

Yelp
Huevos Rancheros were to die for! Amazing green chili here too, will be back! I Huevos Rancheros

Yelp
Well this was a pleasant surprise. Ended up here after a hike that landed us in Golden. We actually walked past and then went back and man are we glad we did. Spot was very simple nothing fancy. All seemed very welcomed- coming from out of town we were greeted by many. I had pancakes which could have been the best I ever had. Big and fluffy yet tasted just like a pancake should. Loved the warm pitcher of syrup. Great for a Dipper like me. My Hubs got a breakfast burrito and said it was definitely the best one he ever had and that the green chili sauce was "Epic" Service was also very good. Looking forward to our next visit.

Yelp
The burrito was the best breakfast I've ever had! Would make a special trip back just to have it again.

Julie B.

Yelp
I had the French toast, side of bacon, and a scrambled egg with green chili salsa, it was delicious! I have a hard time finding a restaurant that makes good French toast, but this was 1 of the very few that do a great job. It also came with cinnamon butter, which was a great surprise. The service was good and they had a cute diner feel.

Julie S.

Yelp
Walked in today for the first time. Super crowded but we were seated immediately. Cindy is one of the best servers we have ever encountered. Super sweet, attentive and on top of everything. She was waiting on many tables but with ease. The food is spectacular. My hashbrowns were the best I have had. Crunchy on the outside but tender on the inside. The green chile is some of the very best...as was my bacon. My husband's blueberry pancakes were out of this world. Seriously, Golden Diner where have you been all my life? We will be going back!
google avatar

Len Y.

Yelp
I asked around town for a breakfast spot and landed here. Hurray!!! Open 7-2 this place runs like a fine machine. Every item is fresh made and the choices are delicious. Our server was so upbeat and timely. I chose house made corned beef hash with eggs, rye and a fresh fruit cup. Huge berries, bananas and pineapple all hand cut and scrumptious. The pork green chili over a light and fluffy omelet was phenomenal. A classic diner in the heart of town. I won't try and take away from hotel restaurant, but this place is a must for breakfast or lunch..

Yelp
Hard to ever complain about diner food. The dude was a good way to go as it was a good mix of food and topped with Denver's famous green chili. The hash browns were a tad undercooked but the flavors were all there for your classic diner food.
google avatar

Yelp
Today is 'Goldens in Golden,' when all the #goldenretrievers in the #Denver area come out to play with the other #dogs in #goldencolorado! We finally got in to The Golden Diner for #brunchfood, and it certainly lived up to the #foodie hype! This #brunchspot makes our top 5 #bestrestaurants list for Golden. #brunching #brunchdate #dogsofyoutube #goldenretrieverpuppy #dogvideos #visitgolden #ocneats

Yelp
We were ravenous after our Coors Brewery tour & managed to sneak in around 1 PM right before closing. Got seated right away & the service was fast but not pushy (in fact very warm like you'd want in a diner). We got the breakfast burrito, blueberry pancakes, & the heuvos rancheros. All were nice portions & very flavorful, hearty meals. I'd definitely come here again if I'm in Golden. It's also convienantly located next to the parking garage thats free on weekends.

Yelp
A great place for a quick but satisfying brunch with stunning views. I loved the omelet with the chili. Other hits were the breakfast burrito and Hobo hash, really can't go wrong with anything! The service was quick and attentive. Never had my coffee below two sips. I will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly service and delicious breakfast. I had a Spinach Feta omelet and Fresh orange juice.

Matthew M.

Yelp
Terrific food and service. Loved this place. Everything fresh and homemade. Will definitely go again.

Melissa K.

Yelp
Great breakfast location. We had huevous ranchero and breakfast burrito. The chili was great too. Also ordered donut holes (made to order) for to go. I would recommend getting there before 10 because its a popular location.
google avatar

Amber S.

Yelp
Came to get an order here this morning after a friend had recommended it to us. The prices on their website are not correct and the prices were at least $3 to $4 dollars more per plate. I ordered a breakfast burrito which was $12 and it is smaller than my hand. I called and spoke to the owner- David who was rude from the start of the call. He didn't provide an answer as to why the prices online were different than what we paid in store. He then proceeded to tell me that the breakfast burrito was a good deal because of the ingredients (which is no different than any other breaking burrito by the way). I've had Santiago's burritos that are bigger than what I was given. David was rude and defensive and overall had zero customer service skills. Save your time and money and visit a restaurant that actually cares about its customers (and doesn't lie about the prices of its food) and doesn't treat you like crap.

Yelp
Easy in and out diner with unassuming decor and super food. The staff is friendly and the vibe is very local. Not sure where the negative reviews came from but as a connoisseur of Huevos and Green chilis this place hits it out of the park...and it's all fresh made.
google avatar

Javier M.

Yelp
Great service. Super friendly. Now to the food. Great tasting food. Whatever you do, get the pancakes . No syrup needed. Amazing. Keep up the great work.

Yelp
We ate here, a while and golden during a Sunday morning. I think this is probably a very busy time for them. We were told you would have to wait about 15 minutes waiting about 25. Service was finally, but definitely rushed because of how many people each leader was in charge of. I ordered the hamburger and pay to dollars extra for bacon and $1.50 extra for cheese. However, about 10 minutes after I order, they came back and told me that they didn't have any hamburger buns and ask which kind of sliced right I wanted my burger on. Burger ended up tasting fine, but I was a little disappointed that they still charged the full amount for what ended up being a patty melt. My brother had the mountain man burrito and really enjoyed it. Definitely what you should get if you want a lot of food it was huge. I would come here again, because the food was good and it has the diner vives that we were looking for in Golden. But I would just keep in mind the time that you're going and what the wait time might be.

Yelp
Swing and a miss. Most other restraints were closed on New Year's Day, but Golden Diner was open so we stopped in for lunch. It was crowded, tables are very close together to seat the most amount of people. The waitress took our name and we waited for about 15-20 minutes. Their menu is incredibly small, I tried the chicken sandwich which turned out to be a chicken thigh - I'm not sure why this wasn't listed on the menu as a chicken thigh is typically not what a chicken sandwich is made with. It immediately made me question the quality of the rest of the food, because the only reason you'd serve a chicken sandwich with a thigh is to cut down on cost. But the quality of the meal immediately goes down when you take this route. Our server was very nice and understood the confusion and took the sandwich off our tab. There was also a hair attached to the maple syrup that was served with pancakes someone in my party had ordered. Our server was incredibly kind, but it wasn't enough to make our experience here a pleasant one. I would recommend yelping other restaurants if you are looking for a meal in Golden.

Michael P.

Yelp
Everything you would expect from a very good diner; fresh, well prepared fair with the overlay of local flavor and flair, and plenty of creative choices. The service was attentive and very friendly. Great value for the money. The Golden will be my go to in Golden going forward.

Yelp
Great service and wonderful breakfast. My Wife had the BAMJO with an English muffin and I had the Round Up with eggs over easy, sausage and buttermilk pancakes. Two cups of coffee and the whole thing cost $41.39. Best breakfast we have had in awhile. We will be back!
google avatar

Kris A.

Yelp
The breakfast selections were wonderful. My husband had the mountain man breakfast burrito with chili Verde. It was huge and extremely flavorful. I had the Mediterranean omelette with feta spinach, roasted tomatoes, and hashbrowns and toast. That was wonderful. Also service was very efficient and the food was hot which is super important to me. Brandy was very friendly as well. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Thomas S.

Yelp
Best breakfast spot around. You have to get the "Mountain Man" with avocado. You better be hungry. You will not eat lunch after. Really good food

Yelp
Great spot in the heart of Golden. It can get busy so get there early! Service and food were excellent!

Yelp
We are here now on a visit from Oklahoma. We hoped for a comfortable and predictable diner breakfast, and we found it here. The place was already bustling at 8:00 on a Sunday. Staff was friendly & food was tasty. Our waitress even told us a few local places to hangout while exploring Golden.

Daniel B.

Yelp
I've been going here for years. The food is consistently great and I've never had a bad experience until today. Nobody wants to listen to a foul mouthed boss berate his employees while they're eating breakfast. It was demeaning to the employees, and adds a layer of stress onto my day when all I want is some breakfast. I realize that corrections sometimes need to be made, but don't air out your dirty laundry for all the see and hear. I want breakfast, not your angry, foul mouthed presence. As a Golden local, this really put a damper on my opinion of this restaurant. I don't want to be around or support that tenuous angst. Just to be clear, this is a bad review specifically targeted at management.

Zabel C.

Yelp
Super yummy and super busy---but it's worth the wait and so affordable. Our waitress was lovely and fun and everyone was very accommodating. I hope to try everything in their menu, one visit at a time.

Yelp
We ate hobo skillet w/ 2 sides of bacon & avacado split b/t 2 people. Portion size was perfect for 2 people- I don't think I could've eaten it by myself. Overall food was good, bacon was well cooked and the potatoes were cooked to perfection. The white toast was impressive it was soft and melted in my mouth. 1 area of improvement I see is the coffee, honestly the coffee here is horrible it's not strong or stout it tasted very watered down. Overall a good place if you're looking for a filling breakfast you won't go wrong here. Staff was very friendly and they checked in on us throughout the meal. Average food excellent service!

Yelp
I'm traveling and have frequented a few local eateries. The Golden Diner is on point and a very friendly environment to have breakfast my go-to was the Diner Special. Heather and all the staff were always pleasant, friendly and on top of their game. My iced coffee was always filled while sitting enjoying my meal. Definitely a great spot!
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
We were a group of 6 and had very good experiences with food and service. My chicken sandwich was delicious and if we pass through again we will return.

Yelp
classic diner in downtown golden. Coffee was good. The staff worked hard to seat and serve tables quickly although with these nationwide shortages of workers you might wanna plan for a little longer than usual. Who is trying to scurry out of a diner anyway though?? Glad we stopped in table of 4 in the sunlight on this crispy fall Wednesday morning. They only have crispy bacon so just keep that in mind too. Cuz my friend tried to get soggy bacon and she brought the soggiest ones they had but they were still crispy I guess. 5 stars thank you
google avatar

Amy H.

Yelp
Great little diner in downtown Golden. The staff was friendly, the wait was pretty fast considering it was a holiday weekend.
google avatar

Ellie W.

Yelp
Wonderful service, smaller interior but it's clean and nice. The food was phenomenal, I highly recommend!
google avatar

Katie G.

Yelp
Went on a busy Sunday morning while visiting Golden. Service was very slow, food was not great, and some of our order was incorrect. We were done with our food before anyone came by to check in, so we couldn't correct the issue. I got the chile verde and there was literally one sliver of pork in the sauce. Food was very disappointing.
google avatar

Janet D.

Yelp
It's a great place for a simple no fuss breakfast. With great attentive servers. Company raved about how cheap it is! You can eat here for $20 minus tip for two. Really. For the service be ready for more than a 20% tip! Food is tasty and one day they ran out of their Corned Beef Hash. Caught it next time but was a bit disappointed since it wasn't the shredded kind that I thought it would be. It was cut in small cubes and was too dry for me. It was still very tasty. So if that's what they have; next time I will just request mine cooked in lesser time! Eggs. I love eggs for breakfast. I do love it even more when they can cook eggs the way I want it. Here they do! We have been back and tried different things each time. Conclusion? I will be back! Mom and pops supporter here and their location is excellent as well. Parking in front and is located near a not so crazy location in this cute town!

John W.

Yelp
Was hungry for lunch and this spot had decent reviews. Staff is friendly, food is incredible. I would highly recommend coming here for a bite to eat. Cool little diner.
google avatar

Jenna W.

Yelp
Food wasn't great and my waiter harassed me. I asked for a coffee and he immediately goes "why are you yelling at me". It seems he was being playful, but wtf. Then he proceeds to ask me twice where I work. Then at the end I get up to go to the bathroom and he goes "hey where you going?" This was an awful experience. Will not be back.

Yelp
What a great little find in Golden! We had a fun afternoon shopping with friends and were super hungry, so we were really glad to find the Diner with enough seating for our group. The food was soooo good, especially the breakfast burrito. Generous portions, great flavor, fair prices and a really fun waitstaff were just what we were looking for. Very close to the Coors factory tour, just a block off of the main drag, the Golden Diner is a good spot to start or end your time in downtown Golden. Definitely recommend

Chris N.

Yelp
Always busy in the mornings, esp. weekends, which should tell you people around here like it. And always a breakfast stop when we're in town. "The Dude" and ""Sally's Omelette " were good, sizable portions. Have had the Mountain Man burrito in past, also good. Only have it a 4/5 due to wait times (we came yesterday too but it was a 30 person wait so left, but that's most places in Golden on weekends for breakfast)

Becky W.

Yelp
Great breakfast! One of the best breakfasts since we left Chicago - which has great breakfast spots. I had a breakfast burrito and my headband had blueberry pancakes. Delicious!

Charles R.

Yelp
Great pork green chili. Ask for bask browns well done and they'll be perfect. Awesome, attentive staff

Amy V.

Yelp
Service was good. Everyone was friendly. Food was good. The kitchen and bathrooms could use a heavy deep clean. Will come back
google avatar

Jenna B.

Yelp
Usually can't go wrong with a Diner... Still flies this time...Good food, nice crowd and great service.

John M.

Yelp
Great breakfast place and the 15 or 20 minutes we had to wait was well worth the wait. Very busy place on a Friday morning. Probably the best Corn Beef Hash and Egg breakfast I have had.
google avatar

Sammy C.

Yelp
As a Golden native, I was excited when The Golden Diner opened! It's a great little local diner that serves up cheap and classic breakfast, brunch, or lunch. Just beware, it gets very busy on weekends, so expect a wait and slower service. I always order the "Round Up" - 2 eggs any style, bacon or sausage, and pancakes or French toast. I always choose bacon and French toast and it's always a yummy start to my day. Don't expect anything gourmet or over-the-top though, this is your classic breakfast diner. If you're looking for a simple, diner style breakfast, The Golden Diner is the place to go!
