Saw a beautiful noise the Neil Diamond musical. Easy to get to from Bart. The sounds system is great as well as the lighting. The theater is also beautiful. Had a great time.

Google
Very cozy venue. Good enough seating. You could see the stage (for the most part ... The top of the projector screen gets cut off) and hear the performer. Not the best, but I enjoyed my time!

Google
Tricky location but worth it! Great events! Candlelight Rock Orchestra was amazing. We parked in the small garage on Turk street, $40 flat, hut is like a minute walking distance from the theatre.

I came for Mean Girls and Beetlejuice here (On different days) & the staff was really friendly each time. The cast that is selected is phenomenal and captivates the audience. True appreciation of art and entertainment can be observed here.I could enjoy shows of movies and cartoons that I grew up watching and I had my fangirl moments in both events. I hope I can come back to relive more childhood memories.

We attended the Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse - Live In Concert event at this theatre. The theatre itself is okay, but it appears to be older; pretty dated. The staff is friendly. The concession prices for snacks and refreshments are ridiculous. The surrounding area(s) of the theatre are very sketchy. We saw a lot of homeless people and tweakers camped up and/or loitering all along the streets, block after block. Be careful and stay safe.

I had an incredible time at the Golden Gate Theater for Demon Slayer: In Concert! From the moment I approached the venue, the iconic marquee lit up the evening, welcoming fans with vibrant displays. The theater itself, with its historic charm, was a perfect setting for this high-energy concert. The staff was friendly, the check-in process was smooth, and the overall atmosphere made for a fantastic night out. Inside, the acoustics were phenomenal! The music filled the space perfectly, making the concert experience immersive and thrilling. As a fan of Demon Slayer, I couldn’t have asked for a better venue. The combination of the anime’s epic soundtrack and the stunning visuals brought to life in such a grand setting truly made it a memorable experience. Whether you’re attending a concert or a live performance, the Golden Gate Theater is an absolute gem in the heart of San Francisco. Highly recommended for both locals and visitors looking for a great night of entertainment! This review captures the venue’s strengths based on the image and your experience while attending Demon Slayer: In Concert.

Google
Icky locale, great theater. Dirty, creepy neighborhood. Plan to bleach soles of shoes after. Theater is gorgeous, luxe, remodeled, super fun, historical.

Google
What a gorgeous theater to see a show in! The view from our balcony seats was good. Very cramped legroom but standard for an old theater. I love historical buildings so this was my jam. Plenty of bathrooms. It is in a rough part of town so don't turn down the wrong alley. We felt very safely leaving the theater with the crowd, walking in pairs, and sticking to main streets.

Yelp
OMG!!!!! I can't tell how much i enjoyed seeing the Broadway play, Beautiful Noise. The performance was amazing and the guy who played Neil sounds exactly like him. It blew me away. We started out with some special drinks. We got, Sweet Caroline and Love on the Rocks. They tasted delicious. The only thing about the theater I didnt like was a lack of railing along the stairs which are pretty steep. I look forward to coming back and seeing another show.

Yelp
Pryor to coming to the venue I read some of the yelp reviews, by the way very helpful, however from my experience there's a lot of improvement as far as safety goes :) there's a parking right around the corner from the theater we paid $41 but they closed at 2am & is around the corner. The theater it self was very clean, beautiful historical building, they have a bar, the staff were overly helpful, friendly and the security made sure everyone were safe, since out side it is a bit scary, however they made sure everyone went home safe and sound, which we can all appreciate. The musical was cute and colorful although we were in the top line H we were able to see and hear clearly the show.

Yelp
Even though it is located in a not-so-great neighborhood, the Golden Gate Theater has some great things going for it, if you are out to see a show or a concert. Good sight lines and acoustics throughout. You can order drinks and snacks from your seat by using the QR code posted directly in front of your seat. A friendly attendant will show up to your seat along with your order of goodies in hand. No need to get up and wait in line. One drawback is that I am only 5'7" and my knees almost nudged up against the row in front of me. Don't think I've ever sat in a place where the rows were so narrow. Getting a camera view of the QR code posted on the back of the seat in front of me for ordering snacks took some yoga moves to get a good angle. But, other than being packed in like a sardine the rest of my experience was very enjoyable!

Yelp
Many reviews mention that the surrounding market area of the theater has changed over the years, with noticeable issues such as homelessness, drug use, and untreated mental health challenges. Unfortunately, this has led to significant sanitation issues on the sidewalks. I was fortunate to find paid street parking very close to the venue, and I attended a daytime performance, which felt safe enough for me as a woman walking to the theater. However, I'm not sure I'd feel the same making that walk at night. The theater itself is quite charming with a vintage feel, and I found the seats reasonably comfortable. As an older building, there are some areas for improvement - particularly accessibility. I noticed an elderly woman struggling to navigate the steep stairs leading to the bathrooms. It was unclear why the restrooms on the top floor weren't available to her, but it would be wonderful if the theater prioritized accessibility for all patrons. Shrek the Musical was absolutely delightful, and the atmosphere inside was vibrant, with many families and children in attendance. It's clear that this is still a thriving and beloved venue. The photo I took doesn't quite capture the magic of the performance!

Yelp
I saw the beetle juice musical here. The theater is pretty clean and the seats are spacious enough. The staff do a decent job with crowd control.

Yelp
Such a cool theater!!! They allow you to buy full bottles of wine & sparkling wine to take to your seat. Down side is that the women's bathroom is all the way downstairs. Need to plan your bathroom breaks as you go down 20+ stairs to get there. One lady fell down 2 steps while I was there. She seemed to be ok, but still dangerous. Other than that, great place to see a show.

Yelp
This is a historic place in the heart of what used to be thriving Market Street in San Francisco. Only a little over a block away from the Emporium, Woolworth, and cable car turnaround at Powell Street, this large theater was a landmark cinema among many other smaller ones along Market Street in those days. My fondest memory is watching the movie "Towering Inferno", filmed in San Francisco with a hall of fame of actors and actresses from the '60's and '70's. I'd been here for a grammar school field trip to watch the Broadway play/musical 1776. I believe my last performance was the Broadway musical 42nd Street. You get the idea. When I saw that a Tony winning singer would be performing here, I bought tickets for his performance. Coming here on Black Friday, we walked from a nearby restaurant just in time to catch the performance. We both needed to use the restroom so she waited in the ground floor lobby while I scurried downstairs (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=1MTky8QZbTdJWgYmEabqTA) to the men's room. I happened to see a wall poster (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=msyElqseI1TTL1pZIxnkTg) which reminded me of those visits. Rushing to our seats, we reached our seats as the music started. It was difficult finding them without an usher to lead us. We made our way down the aisle and estimated our row location. I apologize for disturbing a gentleman in confirming his seat number in confirming our seats. We had a great view from row K in the left orchestra section (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=yaoQC8cYEK8BRj6QXG0L_w). The performance was festive and a great way to welcome the holiday season. I don't know the policy for photos and videos but, not seeing anyone else taking them, I refrained until the end of the show. While leaving the theater, I couldn't help but admire the architecture of this landmark building, from the colorful ceilings to the columns and wall trimmings inside (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=5pPDFzY-WaUb3lnpTqoIMA) and the outer lobby (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=n5jLiCEU1xGjEpfZO2yxJQ). For the performance, the Tony award winning singer of the extremely popular musical about our $10 bill president was tremendous and the visuals from the stage and the sound system did him justice, save a little feedback on one song. My friend and I wondered at his artistry, vocal skills, and the Christmas themed songs on his set list. More on the performance to come in another review. The only interactions with staff we had were good natured from the ticket taker who cheerfully smiled when greeting us, the gentleman who directed patrons to doors, and especially the security manager Zion who was both friendly and helpful in answering my question. I look forward to catching another show here and hope they can draw more shows that rejuvenate Market Street and downtown San Francisco.

Yelp
The acts are great but the acoustics are so bad and they seem to compensate by playing it too loud so all you get is really loud mushy sound no matter who is playing. Very disappointing as the acts are great people.

Yelp
The Golden Gate Theater is used by the Broadway SF productions that need a smaller stage and will probably bring in a smaller audience. I was here for The Girl From the North Country. Once you're in the theater, it's charming and intimate, but it seems to have that old, vintage, dusty feeling to it; don't know if it's my own imagination or if it actually does. The seats are comfortable enough, but it would be great to have a bit more legroom. Also, the placement of the seats doesn't help if you're seated behind a tall person. I was seated in the side orchestra and really had to lean into the seat to my right to see the stage; luckily, that seat was empty the whole evening. The theater managers can't do much about what's happening outside the doors of the theater, but the immediate neighborhood leaves much to be desired. Still, I would attend performances if they're held here.

Yelp
We recently saw the Beetlejuice musical the day after Christmas. It was amazing! The theater is old and beautiful. The staff was really helpful and lines for snacks and drinks was relatively short and moved quickly. The sets were amazing and the acoustics were great! Our view upstairs was clear. The only negatives are that there isn't a ton of leg room for taller people and per usual there are not enough restrooms. Great experience overall!

Yelp
We came to see mean girls and the place is amazing. Very comfy but small seats. Nice layout and good sound.

Yelp
Went to Golden Gate Theatre last night for A Beautiful Noise, and just wow!! What an amazing, fun show it was! I knew nothing about Neil Diamond, and I left the show wanting to check out his other songs. The actors and chorus members were very talented and their voices were power houses! In the beginning I thought it was a bit loud, but I had no idea it was a live band, so when they showed the band, I understood why. I have to give a special shout out to the drummer. Their enthusiasm was so fun to watch, and I caught myself just watching them for parts of musical numbers (yes, they were really that captivating). They were singing along to the songs, flipping their hair, and overall just rocking out! I love seeing people truly love their craft. The theatre itself was beautiful, and you could see the history. My friend and I admired all of the ornate decorations. Overall, it was a super fun musical, and would 100% go back to this theatre. We left with smiles!

Yelp
I enjoy this theater and would recommend going back. I went to see a matinee for Avatar the Last Airbender in concert. We were seated on the ground floor in the back. Acoustics were not bad. Supposedly you could scan a QR code and preorder food or drink. Can't recall if it was deliverable to your seat. No cup holders in these seats made it annoying to hold my drink. All the bartenders were very friendly. It was a matinee so the area around the concert venue outside didn't feel unsafe, but I could imagine it feeling unsafe at night. Would come back because the theater was great with only minor inconveniences.

Yelp
I've never been to the theater before, and it was simply wonderful! Like something frozen in thyme from the turn of the century, with a beautiful dome and immaculate, craftsmanship within the theater and well, kept theater along with an updated Soundsystem!! I surprised with my best friend with tickets to see the wiz, and we were lucky to have found parking that we pre-booked at the Hilton down the street, which it says online is a five minute walk, but with the crazy traffic lights, it actually took us about 15 minutes in the rain. Lol. Sadly they were working on the streets, so there was also construction going on and a number of homeless people along with trash, debris, and fecal matter from humans in the area! the area looked horrible, but the theater itself was very well maintained, clean, and there was heavy security all the way around!! Once inside the theater, everything was wonderful, the servers were great at the bar, and I loved their themed specialty drinks, which we all ordered! Our seats were in the mezzanine and goodness every seat in the house was basically perfect but I loved sitting in the mezzanine since we were slightly closer and added a different angle. I will definitely go here again and see another show but maybe I'll just take an Uber from the Hilton.

Yelp
Beautiful old building. I've been here for a few musicals. It's such a treat not only to enjoy the shows, but to walk through this amazing theatre. They don't make things like this anymore, that's for sure. And there really isn't a bad seat in the house. My last time there, I sat in the nosebleed section, and still had a great view of the stage. The neighborhood isn't the best, but it's not that bad. It's a poor area, but there's not much violence. The bart station is practically right in front of the theatre.

Sandy D.

Yelp
Saw A Beautiful Noise today. One of the best shows I have ever seen. The actor/singer who plays Neil Diamond - then - was phenomenal

Yelp
Beautiful theater! Friendly staff. Drinks were a little expensive. Easy parking, close to theater and not too expensive.

Yelp
The Golden Gate Theatre feels like the Warfield is supposed to (or once did) feel. That is, it's grand and grandiose in and old-fashioned, non-kitschy, unironic way. It feels much larger than the Warfield, but their seating capacities are almost identical. Strangely, they're also across the street from each other. (You wouldn't know it from the entrance of the Warfield on Market Street, but the back of the theater is actually on Taylor Street). Why am I writing so much about the Warfield in my Golden Gate Theatre review? Because they remind me of each other, although not really. I've only been to the Golden Gate once, to see Devo. The sound is really good, and the seats are in very good shape. The lobby, bar area, and upstairs bathrooms are much nicer than their Warfield counterparts. All in all, it's a wonderful place to see a concert, and probably an even better place to see a play or musical. The staff are all very friendly. I can't give it five stars, because it's lovely but not wow-worthy, plus they spam you forever once you've seen anything here; it seems impossible to be removed from their list.

Tim C.

Yelp
Got 2 separate ticket orders from TodayTix so did not expect for all of our group to sit together. But upon arriving Geo at the box office was very nice and took the time to get us tickets all together. Thank you Geo for making our experience great and representing Golden Gate Theatre so well!

Anthony S.

Yelp
The theatre itself is fine, saw Willi Wonka a ways back. I do not love the area, didn't really feel that safe to walk too far.

Yelp
I went here to see The Wiz. The theater itself is quaint. I had a lovely time the moment I entered. Staff were friendly and very helpful. 5 stars for the venue! Unfortunately, the area outside of it, makes me hesitant to come back. I feel bad giving this place an "ok" rating, but I feel the need to share my experience in case anyone else is in the same situation as me. As a female who sometimes attends shows by herself (I don't know very many people who would want to spend the money to watch the same shows repeatedly hehe!), I don't feel safe coming to the area by myself. The nearest parking garage charges a HIGH amount, yet the spaces are tiny, it's difficult to maneuver around the garage, and not at all well kept. I dare not enter the elevators to that garage and it reeked of pee. I can't make a whole day/evening of an event here because I don't want to walk anywhere with all the homeless/drunks/drugged people around. I usually would like to check out cafés or restaurants in the area before/after a show since I'm coming from over an hour away. I'm just not comfortable doing that at this venue. It was stressful just getting to and from the garage. I'll return if I have a group of people to attend with. :-)

Yelp
Do not come early as they advise you to do. It's a huge mass of people standing around waiting. They do not open the doors an hour ahead. We really enjoyed the production but it was often hard to see. The seats are fairly level so if someone tall sits in front of you, you're out of luck. The woman in front of me had big hair and excellent posture.

Yelp
I've been to the Golden Gate Theatre many times. We recently purchased season tickets to shows so this season, we've been here 3 times. This last time was a mess in terms of sound. I thought we were at a rock concert and I was going to lose my hearing. Unfortunately this also made the singer's voices also distort which was a shame. The other two times it was fine. Not sure what went wrong this last visit for Mean Girls. Besides that, most people go to the restrooms on the mezzanine floor. The line does relatively go fast, but if you do not want to wait in line, go to the Balcony floor and there's a Women's restroom up there and an all gender bathroom. This recent time, the line was just so long that I went upstairs, no line. I reread my previous review, and unfortunately the surrounding area has not improved. I think we had to dodge long blocks of pee smells and also lots of human feces on the floor. It's quite a shame that the area has not improved. Parking is still a bit difficult and even more so for Sunday matinee as they do close certain streets. Luckily we found a spot 3 loooong blocks away that wasn't too shady. I usually pack a water bottle and they do have a automatic water fountain for filling up your bottle but you can come in with a filled bottle. We also end up bringing in some snacks for intermission as the cost of snacks or drinks at the theater is just a little expensive on already expensive ticket. The seats here seem a bit more cramped and that's coming from a regular sized person. My bf is a bit tall so he's always so concerned that he might hit someone's back or chair back with his knees. Besides that, it's not a bad theater, smaller than the Orpheum, but not bad to see a show. Just luck of the draw if they sound check correctly.

Yelp
Got to enjoy Our Planet Live in Concert this past weekend, and had an wonderful time. The 18-piece orchestra combined with the show on the big screen, created an entertaining audio and visual performance for the audience, sharing a strong message about climate change and biodiversity (similar to the series on Netflix). But all of this amazement started the moment we stepped into the lobby of the Golden Gate Theatre. The architecture, decor, and color schemes throughout the entire venue are remarkable, from the lobby to the auditorium and stage. I was truly impressed, as it is very different from the outside and looks like it was recently renovated. We sat in the Mezzanine section, and the view from up there is actually pretty great. In fact, the incline on the Mezzanine and Balcony make for good views of the stage from almost any seat, with pretty decent leg room as well (at least if you're short like me), though I'm not so sure about the viewing from the Rear Orchestra because I did not enter the lower level of the auditorium. They offered wine, beer, and a few other beverages and snacks in their concessions stands, without long lines or waits on a Saturday evening. And all of the staff we interacted with during our visit were helpful. All in all, I loved the show as well as this theatre, and I wouldn't hesistate to attend another event here.

Yelp
We came here to watch Beetlejuice on the last day it was playing here in San Francisco, on New Year's Eve. I'm used to the Orpheum, and the Golden Gate Theatre feels older and more cramped than its neighbor, but it does have its old-timey vintage charm. We sat at one of the cheaper seats on the balcony way in the back, and we were able to watch and enjoy the show just fine. Definitely take Bart or public transportation to here if you can, as it's accessible to public transportation, and driving and parking is a pain in downtown San Francisco. The area is also one of the worst parts of the city close to Civic Center and the Tenderloin--gross and grimy and shady. C'mon San Francisco, get your act together.

Yelp
We went in to see the Wiz. The theater was very nice. The lobby architecture was very elegant. We sat on the balcony. It was pretty high up but we can see everything that is going on. Pretty far up, but of course you get what you pay for. The seats were not all that bad. It was a bit tight but pretty comfortable still. There is not much you can rate for the architecture, so my focus on this rating is the staff. Staff was very helpful. The theater is very close to Market st so there were questionable people around, but in my many years they usually leave people alone. They do have security at the front door and they were very attentive. I observed that they were keeping an eye on people in front and they heard a buzzing like from a taser. Right away they went to investigate. In the lobby they ask to look inside bags, they were still respectful. The ushers were great, they were polite and got us through right away. With this I say bravo to the workers and the managers who support them.

Yelp
ORCHESTRA VS BALCONY The first time I saw a play at Golden Gate Theater I sat at the balcony. I didn't like the seating at all because the balcony section felt as a roller coaster that was descending. Also the seat was tight. The play I saw that night was "Rent". That was the last time I paid for a balcony seat at Golden Gate Theater as I would rather pay more to watch comfortably. Ever since that evening all the performances I watched at Golden Gate Theater have been at the orchestra section. Whether I sat at the last row in the orchestra section as I did when I watched "Jesus Christ Superstar" in November 2021 or the front row when I saw "To Kill A Mockingbird" in October 2022 I always felt more comfortable in that section. I understand plays are expensive, but don't think just by saving money seating in the balcony section you might not enjoy your evening because your seat was uncomfortable. I recommend paying extra for the seats in the orchestra section especially for a play you really want to see.

Yelp
I went here with a group of friends to see The Wiz. The theatre is nice and clean and offer service to your seats. However the menu is very limited to pricey drinks and small snacks such as popcorn, candy and pretzels. I had the Frose' and it was really good. There are several parking options nearby, which is great. The location of the theatre is not that great....its in the Tenderloin area if SF.

Yelp
Got tickets to see John Mellencamp at Golden Gate Theater last Friday. It was our first time at the Golden Gate (been to the neighboring Orpheum several times). I was surprised to see the grand style of the theater, also it was good sized compared to other theaters. With the combination of ornate style and look it could easily pass for a Broadway theater in NYC. We were in the mezzanine for the concert, seats were comfortable but legroom is very tight (I'm 6ft). There is a large bar on the mezzanine level serving beverages but you can also get bar service to your seat if you scan the QR code on the back of every seat. Cool option if the bar lines are long. Plenty of bathrooms is also convenient Most important when at a concert is the sight line which was good and unobstructed from the mezzanine. The sound was also good, not the best I've heard but good. John Mellencamp put on a very good show, voice more raspy than ever but he sounded good. Finally the area around the Golden Gate Theater is littered with homeless and is filthy. C'mon SF, if you really want to get back to "normal" stop the politics and clean up the area. If you don't I fear the GG and Orpheum won't survive and that would be a shame!

Yelp
We had orchestra seats this time, so it was a more enjoyable experience than balcony seats. However, there isn't much slope so your view could be blocked by a tall person seated in front of you. We saw "ain't too proud, the life and times of the Temptations." The music was a walk down memory lane. I was impressed by the great voices of the lead performers. The story was narrated by Otis Williams, the last living member of the 5 original Temps. It was light on character development--many lived tragic lives with illness and drugs. If you like R & B I recommend this show.

Yelp
First! I highly recommend seeing the Jagged Little Pill! Acting is superb! And the vocals will knock your socks off. This is a deep message musical. The actors manage to make you laugh; get choked up and even see yourself on stage in one of the characters. I found it ironic. The theater was clean, staff was helpful & friendly. Negative for me is not much leg room in their seats. But I am taller than most folks. Go! Enjoy!
google avatar

Madison M.

Yelp
Great location to see a play. I felt like it was small enough that anywhere you sat, you'd be able to see and have a great view of the stage. The theatre is also only 2 blocks from Bart, so it's easily accessible to those like myself who don't like driving in the city.
google avatar

AJ J.

Yelp
Although the area isn't the best part of San Francisco, this theater is definitely classic and beautiful. The seating is very comfy and love that it all angles down so you're not in the way of the person in front of you. The actual sound in the theater isn't great but I'm sure it's different for every show. I've sat in the balcony and the orchestra and can say that as long as you're somewhere near the middle, not too far on the sides, you'll have a good seat. I recently visited to see The Prom and it was spectacular! Loved the drink and snack selections they had to offer. It's almost a full bar: cocktails, beer, wine, even some frozen drinks. Popcorn, candy, meat and cheese tray, etc. All of which you are allowed to bring inside the theater which is great! The only thing I would say is very inconvenient is the restroom situation. They're all nicely remodeled and clean which is great. However, if you're sitting on the orchestra level, the restrooms aren't on the main level, they're further down about 2 flights of stairs which just isn't that practical (Although they do have ADA restrooms). The ushers aren't too friendly either which is kind of disappointing since you expect friendliness from a theater. Overall a great Bay Area gem. I recommend parking around the block at the garage nearby, since it's indoors and has people there to monitor who enters.

Yelp
I've seen a couple shows here and have some balanced feedback for my experiences here! PROs: - Beautiful, charming and historic venue. The architecture is impressive from the second you walk in the foyer to the time you take a seat in the theater - Staff are all really friendly. I've never had a bad experience from check-in, to the bar, to ushers CONS: - The seats are super cramped, and make 2.5-3 hour shows difficult to endure. I'm a 5 foot 11 guy and my knees are almost always squished in trying not to bump the people next to me, on the side that I'm next to strangers - Not sure why, but during this last time I was here it was hot as a mother! Everyone was fanning themselves even though it was a cool 65 degrees outside, so it was less than comfortable All in all, visiting here is always a fun time out. Food for thought is that it may be better to splurge a bit for seats with more room if you can!

Yelp
The five star rating was for the show, "Ain't Too Proud to Beg". It was a great production and the story was told well with the music and props. A super enjoyable evening listening, clapping and refraining from singing along (some guy behind me was singing off tune and while I love he was getting into it, he was making me cringe!). The fact that they could hit the notes so clearly and still move so smoothly and make it all look so cool was totally impressive. Had a great time at the show. The theatre was as expected in the Tenderloin. Sadly the Tenderloin has gotten worse over the years so we decided to eat elsewhere and just deal with parking close by so we wouldn't be wandering the Tenderloin too long after dark. As long as you stay with the crowd after the show you should be fine but I wouldn't park too far away. Saw a lot of uber and lyft pick ups after the show and the police are right in front of the theatre so you feel safe when you immediately walk out but after that you're on your own.

Yelp
Went to see Avatar the Last Airbender in concert at the Golden Gate Theatre. First impressions of the theatre: it very beautifully, rich with historic details: some part of it looks like old-fashioned Victorian crown molding, other sections has Art Deco like details and then there's the rod-iron railing. It's a mishmash of designs that work together and even though the theatre is a little run-down looking, it's still very charming. The stage is huge and the acoustics were amazing. The stairs were a bit steep though; it's enough to give anyone vertigo. A group behind us commented how the seats practically had no leg room and my niece said cup-holders would have been nice as she tried to balance popcorn in one hand and drinks in the other. Truly the theatre wasn't half bad and the Avatar concert was great; the only down-side to this experience was the location of the theatre: the surrounding blocks around the theatre was full of vagrants, the streets looked filthy and a lot of places looked abandoned or were boarded up. It was a very unsettling six-minute walk to and from the theatre to our hotel.

Yelp
Chicago was absolutely fantastic! Loved the theatre as always! Super friendly staff too. Highly recommend!

Yelp
So, crazy story but ... it's ours. We went to see "Ain't Too Proud! The Temptations Story". Great show and great venue but that's not what I'm commenting on!! The GGT is in an area that gets a bit "sketchy" late at night. We were parked several blocks away. One of our group was struggling with Psoriatic Arthritis and walking back was gonna be a problem so, 3 women and 1 guy stayed back while 2 of us walked as fast as we could to get the car. It probably took us 20min round trip. Anyway, the theatre emptied out much quicker than we expected and our 4 were standing outside ... essentially alone!! A female security office approached our crew and asked, "Do you have a ride coming ... soon?" They told the officer we were on the way. This is the important part, the Security Person, NEVER LEFT our folks alone!! A second officer, appeared nearby in a doorway ... he too, never left them alone. Our people were only without other attendees around for about 4 minutes, maximum but ... we are so grateful to the GGT and their Security Staff for their consideration of their guests. In my opinion, phenomenal Customer Service!!!

Yelp
Great seats! We sat in orchestra right side. Because I'm vertically challenged and asked for a cushion. But thankfully I didn't need it. It was a clean theater, workers were friendly and helpful. I do have a suggestion that when intermission is over, to turn the light off and on a few times so everyone knows to get back to their seats. Instead of turning off the lights all together without any warning. At Tina Turner Musical there were an abundance of elderly and or physically challenged that needed the warning. I was up walking around about 10 rows from my seats and had to walk in the dark to find my row.

Yelp
The theater seating is so cramped prepare to feel uncomfortable the whole time while your knees touch the person in front of you, and your arms the folks on your sides. This really dampens the experience. Can't even move an inch when your sitting. Shame because the theater is beautiful on the inside. It's also in a sketchy neighborhood at night and we saw some things on the wall to Powell BART No plan to return to this theater in the near future.

Yelp
Nice old school theater and hopefully someday that renovate to increase seat and leg room as it's a tight fit . Place is clean but worn out . Patrons struggle to walk up the short stairs and fairly steep incline to reach the upper levels . But overall enjoyed the show and theatre.

Yelp
In the past year we've been to two plays, "Jesus Christ Superstar," and "Beetlejuice." This is for sure an older theater, opened in 1922. The seats don't have much leg room, so you must stand up when someone needs to walk by. The attention to details of this building are so beautiful, I'm really glad that they found a way to reopen it back in the late 70's. We've never drive, instead we always take transit, Bart or Muni. Driving around downtown San Francisco is such a headache, I don't really recommend it. Try to get here early if you can, grab something to drink or snack on, they allow food inside. Use the facilities. Sit and enjoy the view and relax before the show starts. My favorite area is the orchestra, just nice to be on the floor. We sat up in the balcony and it feels more cramped. We still enjoyed the show, but would prefer to be on the ground level. You'll have fun regardless, because live theater is the best thing. Enjoy the show!

Yelp
An intimate theater that maybe requires a bit more planning to be cozy. Firstly seating is old school so it lacks a major incline and personal space. Expect to bump elbows and see a few heads if you sit at orchestra level. Go up top if you are short. Rush tickets are super cheap for last minute showings but expect orchestra level seats. I've seen Jagged Little Pill and Beetlejuice. Good sound, good lighting, and great shows! Park at 5th and Mission garage!

Yelp
I purchased tickets for "Girl from the North Country", but I had the foresight (I thought) to purchase ticket insurance. As (bad) luck would have it, I had an accident which required surgery which was scheduled for the day before the performance. A week before the show I submitted a request for a refund. It turns out that the theater uses an English company called Secure Refunds Limited to process their refunds. Instead of simply refunding to the credit card I used to purchase the tickets, they have put me through a horrible process of trying to secure an international wire transfer to my bank account. I initially provided the standard wire transfer information from my bank, but that was not sufficient. They keep asking for additional information. I had to call my bank, who provided me with an encrypted message containing a lot of numbers, most of which did not appear to match the fields required by the English company. The online help on their website was not very helpful. I am still waiting for my refund, but I am not very hopeful. I expect they will reply asking for additional information. I have spent more hours trying to get a refund than the show I had hoped to see! I am recovering from surgery, and I don't need this. I think it is unconscionable that GG Theater would use an offshore service that makes it so difficult to use the service. I should have given my tickets away. I don't think I will ever patronize GG Theater or BroadwaySF again! I would give them 0 stars if I could! Community theater is much more rewarding. Update: Secure Refunds continues to be intransigent or incompetent. Now they say: "Unfortunately, we cannot refund to your credit union as they use a 3rd party intermediary bank. Please provide the details requested below - we can accept the bank details of a trusted family member if necessary " By using this awful service, Golden Gate Theater has compounded my physical pain with severe emotional distress. I am at my wits' end.

Yelp
I am beginning to enjoy our subscription to BroadwaySF less and less. The shows are usually good and some are great but with the changeover from SHNSF to Nederlander, policies have changed as have many familiar faces. Upon entering the lobby, because of the rain, my wife had to 'find' our tickets. A very large man with a rich baritone voice was calling out that those with balcony seats to hurry up the stairs and those looking for tickets to the Orchestra, move to the left. I understand that he was trying to keep the lobby clear but when you rush people unnecessarily, you can also cause accidents. As we approached the main entrance doors, another security man aggressively bellowed 'Orchestra'? When we said yes, he let us pass. Once we were in the inner lobby, the doors into the seating were not open yet. They usually open about 30 minutes before showtime. So, folks were standing around clogging the walkway. There were apparently no bottles of $6 Voss water left so I ended up buying a 500 ml San Benedeto Sparkling water in a glass bottle for $8.15. In The Golden Gate Theater, for at least the past 12 years, I have always gone to the side where the stairs to the ladies washroom is so I can open one of the doors that leads into the secured alley. I can get a nice breeze there and be comfortable until it's time to enter the theater. Today, Carol, the usher at the door where I was came over and shut the door. When I asked her if it was a new policy, she told me that it was for this show only. I don't know if she meant this particular day or the entire run of the show. Which doesn't really matter to me because I'm only here for this showing today. The reason given was that the performers would get cold. Okay. In the SHNSF days, both the ushers and security were friendlier and much more personable. Long-time attendees tend to be older and while they may cause some congestion, they should be offered assistance as necessary but certainly never rushed. We have been members for over 40 years. Our subscriber number is lower than 500. We'd like to think that our opinion matters. As much as the all-mighty dollar? Who knows?

Yelp
I would not recommend this theatre for the hearing impaired. The equipment is the worst I have experienced in 30 years. I picked up signals (words and directions) from the stage director (I'm guessing that's the title) which were interesting if I wasn't trying to listen to a musical. Then the device beeped and cut out throughout the second act. Don't waste your time asking the house manager for help. You're just going to get excuses and statements repeatedly telling you that it's never happened before. Little empathy for the hearing impaired. I guess don't really care about complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Yelp
This place has great sound and really easy to get too. It's a very clean place and my seats were easy to get too. The sound and everything was all, all smiles here .

Yelp
- was blessed enough to watch the likes of Pippin, Hedwig and the Angry Inch here - the seats are comfortable - staff is helpful -prices a bit high for snacks as per usual for events like this - balcony tickets cost from 45-60 and front row ranging between 110-130 per person - have been fortunate enough to have the experience of sitting second row on the floor, first row on the mezzanine, and third row on the balcony - the only issue I had were the bathrooms, always seem to be crowded - easy walk from Powell, there's plenty of parking garages - food a few inches, or a few blocks away from the theater - Overall a fantastic experience here. 4/5
