The 31 Best Restaurants in Kolkata (Calcutta), India | Eater

"The city’s second and newer Chinatown, in Tangra, is dotted with sauce factories, tanneries, and restaurants that serve spicy, saucy Tangra-style Chinese food, a jumble of Hakka, Sichuan, and Cantonese styles with distinct local inflections. Golden Joy is one of Tangra’s biggest crowd-pullers. Drop by for a meal of the restaurant’s most-ordered dishes, like mixed fried rice loaded with shredded chicken, prawns, and scrambled eggs; Hakka noodles (springy noodles tossed with vegetables and soy sauce); chicken sheathed in a soy-based gravy crammed with green chiles; and golden-fried prawns." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

How Indian Chinese Food Became India's Favorite Cuisine

"Golden Joy is a restaurant in Tangra, Kolkata, known for serving a combination of Indian Chinese and authentic Chinese dishes. It is run by Freddy Liao and his family, and offers items like steamed fish, roast duck, and Bombay chili chicken, which is full of masala. The restaurant caters to people who have visited China and are looking for authentic food, although most visitors are surprised by the traditional tastes compared to the spicier versions they are used to in Kolkata."

Golden Joy is consistently celebrated as one of the quintessential experiences when visiting Tangra, Kolkata's historic Chinatown. It’s not just a restaurant; for many, it's a pillar of the city's unique culinary landscape. The core of the appeal is the food: classic, authentic Hakka-style Chinese cuisine that has been perfectly adapted to the local Indian palate. Diners praise the intense flavors, generous use of garlic and chili, and the sheer satisfaction of the "Tangra Chinese" experience. Favorites that constantly pop up in conversation include the Dry Chilli Pork, the rich Roasted Duck, and the crispy Golden Fried Prawns. The portion sizes are often highlighted as a major plus—they are very large, and many dishes can be ordered in half-plates, ensuring excellent value for money. The atmosphere at Golden Joy contributes significantly to its charm. It's a bustling, spacious establishment that manages to feel simultaneously chaotic and comforting. Users appreciate that it caters well to large groups and families, often segmenting seating areas with a dedicated family room. However, expect a lively, sometimes crowded setting, particularly on weekends and holidays—it's definitely not the place for a quiet, intimate meal. While the ambience is traditional and the service is generally prompt and friendly, patrons primarily visit for the taste and the heritage. It is widely considered a mid-range dining option, offering superb quality and quantity that leaves a lasting impression. If you are looking to truly taste the culinary history of Kolkata's Chinatown, Golden Joy is the restaurant that consistently delivers that bold, flavorful, and deeply satisfying experience.

China Town has its own charm and hype and to savour some good Chinese delicacies, we went to Golden Joy restaurant. We ordered for Chicken Manchow soup, chicken wanton soup, golden fried prawns, egg fried rice, cantonese noodles and chilli chicken. Out of all these foods, the only item we enjoyed was fresh lime soda and the complimentary saunf. Golden fried prawns- prawns were huge in size but really there was no marination or no flavour. Just prawns dipped in batter and fried. The dish lacked seasoning and flavour. Even the prawns did not taste that great. Manchow soup- It was decent but flavour was not authentic. Wanton soup- great disappointment, wantons were okayish and the soup has a distinct smell of chicken. Egg fried rice- tasted very basic. Nothing special about it. Cantonese noodles- lacked seasoning and flavour by means. Thumbs down 👎 Chilli chicken - Not used to this flavour and style of chilli chicken which they served. Have had really better chilli chicken. Seriously, did not understand what the hype about China Town was because we were thoroughly disappointed and not sure when we plan to get back.

Had a great experience at Golden Joy, Kolkata! The food, service, and ambiance all came together for a memorable meal. 🍤 Crispy Golden Prawn Fried – perfectly golden and super crunchy, one of the best prawn dishes I’ve tried! (5/5) 🥟 Yum Wanton – tasty and crisp, though could use a little more filling inside. (4/5) 🍗 Hunan Chicken – absolutely loved it! Spicy, flavorful, and cooked just right. (5/5) 🌶️ Kung Pao Chicken – decent, but a bit on the sweeter side for my taste. (3/5) 🍜 Mixed Rice Noodles – excellent mix of flavors and texture, a total hit! (5/5) 🍚 Thai Veg Fried Rice – light, aromatic, and full of flavor, pairs perfectly with the mains. (5/5)

The quality and quantity of food are truly impressive - every dish we tried was flavorful, fresh, and served in portions generous enough for sharing. It’s definitely one of those places where you get value for money when it comes to taste and serving size. That said, the service could use improvement. Instead of waiters approaching you proactively, you often have to call them multiple times to get attention for placing an order or even follow-ups.

I live near China town so this place is kind of a go to for us, I have seen it evolve...the portion sizes have taken a beating fs but the special kick of tangra style cooking lives on. If you are coming to Kolkata i would suggest you atleast give it a try to experience the roots of indo chinese cuisine. Do pre order for their specials, Explore, Eat and stay Excited

The restaurant is a busy place especially on weekends and festivals. They serve varieties of veg and non veg dishes. The quantity is decent and the price is reasonable. Fried wanton was good. Thai fried rice is rich with chicken, prawns, eggs and herbs, it is mildly spicy. The Hakka noodles is filling and contains good amount of veggies and chicken. The sweet and spicy mint dip was apt to dip wanton. The darsan with icecream and honey is the perfect dessert to end a happy satisfying meal. You can visit with family and friends. Due to high demand the place is busy so the waiting time could be long.

We’ve went for dinner, valet parking was there and we’ve to wait for around 45 minutes to get the seats as there was lot’s of foodies are there due to Durga Puja festival. Foods are awesome we’ve ordered gravy noodles and 4 starters which tastes good 😋. Recommend to others, you’ll get seats as per the availability of guest count not by the token numbers 🙃. Waiting hall is at the terrace and there are two big aquariums which will help you to pass the time. Overall good experience.
