The Best Restaurants In Sunset Park - New York - The Infatuation

"There are a bunch of Chinese bakeries in Sunset Park, but Golden Steamer makes the best steamed buns, period. The place is dominated by giant cabinet-like steamers in the back, like private saunas just for bao. A perfect order here consists of a pumpkin bun, a roast pork bun, and a salted egg yolk custard bun, with milk tea for good measure. Stock up on their large packs of steamed buns that you can freeze and steam on demand for snacking emergencies. " - Carina Finn Koeppicus, Bryan Kim

Golden Steamer Sunset Park - Review - Sunset Park - New York - The Infatuation

"Because Golden Steamer is the best place in Sunset Park to get steamed buns, this small shop is always busy, but the line moves very quickly. Order a few buns (we're partial to the pumpkin, salted egg yolk, and pork-filled options), and a milk tea to eat outside on the street, then get a box of your favorites to keep in your freezer at home for an emergency breakfast or lunch. They also have a few baked items, like cookies and cake rolls, but note that they don’t do baked buns here." - Carina Finn

Google
Golden Steamer is a grab-and-go bakery that offers items like fresh buns, hot rice dishes, and frozen goods. They have locations in both Sunset Park and Chinatown. I love their steamed rice dishes for only $3.50 each! They have a variety of options - we got the steamed spare ribs over rice, and their chicken with mushroom over rice, $7 total. The meats are tender, the trays are steaming hot, and the food ready to be eaten - just ask for one of the dishes behind the counter. Another highlight of Golden Steamer are their baked roast pork buns - you can get eight in a box for $5.50. They’re soft and fluffy, and you can eat them any time of the day

Google
My bbq roast pork bun had so little meat, I ate 3/4 of it before getting one tiny bite with the meat. I also found hair inside my dumpling. Their buns are fluffy and delicious and dumplings are seasoned good. The food tastes good I just wish they didn’t skimp as much.

Google
I LOVE roast pork buns. So, I would give it 5 stars if it wasn't for the fact that it was a steamed pork bun (not my favorite way to eat them) but with that being said, for a steamed pork bun, it was very good.

There are egg shells in the meat floss cake roll. The egg shells damaged my teeth. Please do your job more carefully. I don’t want to crack my teeth.

Google
THE place for classic HK buns & other snacks. The fact that it's rated a 3.9 is a travesty. Y'all are the worst for giving 1 star cause you got something dumb to nick-pick about. Yes, the old ladies have attitudes, but when I'm spending $8 for 6 pastries, IDGAF. Have a laugh about it, and enjoy the food. These people aren't paid enough to tickle your taint.

Google
Love the salted egg yolk steamed bun, $5 for 6 buns. Their plain steamed bun is a good breakfast option too. Like many shops in Chinatown it's a cash only place. Worth the price though.

Google
good spot for a snack or a full meal, with many healthy options. prices are incredibly inexpensive best regards jimmy wong

Yelp
Lotus seed bun (my favorite), salted egg yolk bun, red bean bun, pork bun. This is bao heaven. I'll be honest, I have never really liked the red bean bun, but I've never had one like this. So smooth, rich. These are by far the best bao I've ever had, so much filling, so light and fluffy, fridge and resteam so well for all of them. I have tried my fair share of lotus seed bao and this one takes it. I also have never found salted egg yolk bun outside of dim sum restaurants and these were exquisite. My family loves salted egg yolk bun, can't wait to take it to them! And price is unbeatable. $6-6.75 for giant bao. What are you waiting for? I haven't tried the sister bakery in Manhattan, but there's always plenty in the Brooklyn one

Yelp
I visited this after I visited the one in Chinatown, Manhattan and I loved this place even more. The roast pork buns are so delicious and there is so much filling on the inside. I loved the red bean and the rice buns. The service here is super fast and the prices are so worth it. They have both cold and hot ones that you can get depending on when you want to eat it. They also have other desserts like egg tarts and sago which were also delicious. There is no seating so it is a food to take on the go.

Yelp
I ordered an iced coffee and they automatically put in liquid sugar and milk. So I asked for it black and they remade it with sugar. I guess there's no black coffee.

Yelp
Affordable and great quality! Got a 6 pack of roast pork buns for $6 and an 8 pack of dried bamboo and pork for $6.75. Steamed for a couple minutes at home and they were perfect. I've been recommended this place so many times I'm goad I finally tried it, will definitely be back

Yelp
Their products are super tasty, affordable & authentic! I tried the sesame lotus balls, roast pork buns, sponge cakes, and sticky rice buns. They were all so delicious - savory, soft, and packed w/ taste! I will try their other items as well. This shop is one of my most favorite chinese bakery in NYC so far! Highly highly recommended!

Yelp
I came here on a Wednesday at around 6pm. They had lots of buns left for the bulk take-home, but not much variety for the single buns. I got a single cream custard bun and a 6-pack salted egg yolk for $7.50. They only take cash, which is a little inconvenient. In a nutshell, delicious steamed buns.

Yelp
Good coffee!!! Was in dire need for a cup of coffee and luckily we found this place! The coffee is rich and strong, just the way I like it! Good service. It was a very quick in-and-out stop. Therefore, didn't get to buy any pastries. Next time I want to try their steam buns. I also want to try their pineapple buns. Crowded location though. They have 2 other locations in 143A Mott St, New York, NY 10013 and 1964 86th St, Brooklyn, NY 11214. Maybe I'll go there instead. Let's see... But definitely, I'd come back just for the coffee!

Yelp
I''ve been to the Manhattan location but they're always lacking on items. So I Made a special trip just to this location. Definitely a lot more options here. I spent over $100 just on buns! But they're definitely worth it.

Yelp
10/10 experience. Popped in during the middle the day as I live in the neighborhood and the staff were incredibly friendly. I bought a set of dried bamboo and pork bun and a set of chicken and vegetable bun to take home and steam. They were delicious after 8 minutes on the steamer. Also their iced coffee is pretty solid. Price was great and having been to the golden steamer in Manhattan, the Golden Steamer on 8th Ave is just as good! Will be back for sure!

Yelp
Great steamed buns but a lousy place to sit and eat. Normally, the limited seating is occupied by old men and contractors. If you are lucky, you can sit at one of the 9 seats (3 of those are questionable since it's right next to the carry out boxes of buns they sell... not very sanitary). On a cold day, you will find a dozen people standing inside waiting for their mini buses. Some of these even block access to the trash can. So the door is opening constantly and it essentially becomes just as cold inside. Again, not a pleasant place to eat. It's a bone chilling 21 degrees today. Food is great : steamed custard buns ("Nigh Wong Bao"), steamed sticky rice buns ("Law Migh Geung"), and milk tea. Not a good place for the steamed bun with veggie and meat inside since the amount of filling is minimal in that one and it's mostly bun. Prices are good. May be a bit difficult for new customers to select steamed buns since they are practically out of sight and you can't point to them. The front counter has cooked noodles, etc but not steamed buns. As with most non-restaurants in the area, no bathroom. Enjoy the food here, but not the ambiance (especially when the weather is cold). It's a tricky situation since steamed buns aren't great as they cool down. So hope you can eat in your car.

Yelp
I keep coming back here for the fresh custard bun. At $0.90 for the bun, it's a steal and a real great treat for me. Here you can also get meat buns, plain buns, etc fresh. Or you can buy in bulk as they package a lot of those buns to go as well.

Yelp
It was my first time in Brooklyn Chinatown and as I walked by Golden Steamer, I was galvanized by the delicious smells. I immediately walked in and was impressed by the variety of fresh buns and bakery items. I tried the mini-egg tarts (3 for $1.50), roast pork buns (3 for $1.50) and the egg custard steamed buns (6 for $4.75). The custard filling was perfectly sweet and the size of the bun was very generous. The roast pork bun was probably one of the best I've ever tasted. I've gone back here a second time and everything was fresh and delicious- a place you must visit if you're in Chinatown.

Yelp
If you're in Brooklyn Chinatown and you're trying to get your char siu bao fix, this is your place. Gotta love Golden Steamer...

Yelp
I've been trying a bunch of different bakeries in Sunset Park lately and this is by far one of my favorites! For starters, everything is very well organized and laid out, so it's easy to actually get what you want. The baked buns are sold in either packs of three or six, which is totally fine since they're on the smaller side, and makes it easy to share. The quality of both types we tried (pineapple and roast pork) was really excellent -- the bread was lightly sweet and had a nice bit of tang with a chewy, open texture. Loved that the roast pork wasn't all gristle and fat, and the sauce wasn't too sweet either, definitely my favorite pork bun in the neighborhood. The pineapple buns were also great, not too crumbly or overly sweet, and went really well with milk tea. The staff here are hands down the friendliest at any bakery in the area, and they speak pretty good English. They actually ask you how much sugar you like in your tea, which is rare! I can't wait to go back and try their steamed buns.

Yelp
This is the most amazing bakery on the block and I walked the street 5 times one weekend scouting for the best pastries and grocers. This shop by far has the best buns and most unique with its amazing egg custard steamed buns. They are HuGE and a bargain for 90 cents. I came back to this store twice cause I had to get more cash after shopping and wanted another snack. When I left for the day I had to buy a box of custard buns and bbq pork buns for my friends. Needless to say they loved them and want to try out the other baked and steam goods from this place. Next time I am in town, this is one of the first stops. Warning CASH ONly!

Yelp
Contrary to the sign out front referring to noodle station, they still specialize in steamed buns of all sorts. At almost any given hour they have a dizzying array of steamed buns to choose from. Stacks and stacks of them they're wheeling out because they move tons of these somehow. You can pick mini buns upon entering at the display alongside the cash register however you can also walk into the back and ask the attendant to help you with the six packs of larger buns that adorn the wall. These you'll have to take home and steam. This is what they're most known for. Now although the current C-rating on the window betrays their appearance altogether, rest assured this is a great place to stuff your kids faces (if you have any). What kid wouldn't like mini buns? ok, well how about for a little more than a buck? I thought so. The bottom line sadly is that these mini buns are somewhat bland, so although great for kids, adults best opt for their other offerings. Chinese sausage buns please!

Yelp
Staff is the one reason why I love coming here they're all super friendly when I see them. Food is always delicious the best in sunset park baos are so good for such and affordable price.

Yelp
Still 5 stars but! And this is important, the buns have gone up to 5$ for the 6 packs. Not much of an increase, but still a consideration. Still the best buns I've had.

Yelp
I love stopping by here on my way to work for an iced milk tea and egg tart or pork bun. Even better than the Golden Steamer in Manhattan's Chinatown. The folks that work here are super nice and this place is so so cheap! Pork buns and egg tarts are my fav

Yelp
I'll start off by saying that my fondest memory of this place took place years ago when I got a bubble tea here while my mom picked out some bao's. It was some sort of slushie and after leaving and drinking it, I noticed something hard in my drink. Out of my mouth came something that looked like a cut off piece of fingernail and I instantly was beyond turned off. F*k that crap, never went back for their drinks ever again. Granted, I never expect any clean conditions in any establishment in the 8th ave region but that was a little too far. On the other hand, this place is a favorite for my parents for the bao's alone. It's different than many of the other bakeries in the area because they sell packs of 6 for the most basic buns. Some of my favorites is the runny egg yolk baos and pork floss rolls. Also, $1.50 for 3 mini rolls is a steal! They're not all that mini either - perfect for a very light breakfast.

Yelp
The service attitude was very bad. I politely asked for an extra bag. The cashier looked at me very rudely and said that I need to add money to get the bag. The products sold in this shop are not fresh, I will not go to this shop to buy again

Boburkhuja S.

Yelp
I've been there today and this food is amazing! I just love it and next time I'll definitely buy more. One downside is the fact that they don't accept credit cards. I hope in near future (in a world without covid) they will start accepting credit cards.

Yelp
I stumble upon the Brooklyn 8th ave division of this shop on my way to my doctor's office. Glad I found this little gem. Although the taste of the buns is so so. Nothing too gaga over but and it's a big BUT. Have you ever wish you could have these delicious Chinese buns that they sell at all the Chinese bakeries... I am referring to buns like hotdog bun, corn and cream on a Bun, chicken bun, pineapple bun and all the traditional Chinese favorites, but only you wish it was smaller cause you didn't feel like finishing a whole bun or you would rather try a variety instead of filling up on one type of bun. Well, now you can. At golden steamer, they offer just that. Mini versions of your famous Chinese buns. And for a great inexpensive price of one big one at other bakeries. For example, I got three mini egg tarts for $1.25, Three different types of buns - (mix and match allowed) hotdog bun, corn and cream bun, and dried pork bun for $1.25. In addition I got three types of yellow crusted buns - pineapple, egg and coconut for $1.25. So the whole six buns and three egg tarts for $3.75. what a deal! Taste similar like other Chinese bakery buns. But the size and price makes it a four star bakery for me. As the name of the bakery suggests, it does specialize in steam buns. They look like they have a large selection too. But I didn't buy any because I was too excited over the mini size buns that I brought enough buns for the day. But will review the steam buns next time if I purchase it.

Yelp
Have you ever had a pork with veggie buns fresh out of the steamer? No? Put yo chopstick down and get over to the Golden Steamer! Even the name "Golden Steamer" sounds like something royal coming out of the Temple of Heaven's kitchen or some other palace in China. Tasty stuff. Buy 6 of em frozen and steam for 12 minutes for a quick and delicious breakfast or snack.
google avatar

Alice A.

Yelp
One of my favorite bakeries in Brooklyn's Chinatown. Not only are their baked goods cheap, they are tasty. I do recommend you to try out their pork-veggie steamed buns as they are filled with real meat and lots of good stuff :)

Yelp
First off I have a Cantonese palette, so that is what my star rating goes by for Golden Steamer. I was introduce to this place by a friend in Brooklyn that gave me a box of 6 golden steamed custard runny egg bun 5 years ago. That bun is like a gateway drug to brooklyn for me driving from eastern long island. You first have to try a hot one there to appreciate the right consistency of the softness, lightness of the bun and a nice ratio of hot sweet custard with a trace of salty duck egg. If you buy a box for home, don't eat it cold or microwave, must be in a steamer for 7 mins for the perfect reheat. This is the best I try outside of China, so every time I make that long drive I take orders from all my friend. Once a month I buy around 15-20 boxes for friend and freeze 2 box for myself. Most of the time they are sold out midday so I know when they produce fresh batches or go over to the branch on 11th ave. They have 3 branches in Brooklyn and 1 in Manhattan. Somehow the Manhattan branch was not that good. The pork bun, chicken bun and big bun are all good with the right ratio of quality filling. Also must try the rice with steamed pork with black bean sauce.

Yelp
This post is about the 11th ave borough park location (as it does not have its own yelp page). Now i wonder if this location is a fake one... cant find it on yelp or google. Anyways, i used to love to get my everyday breakfast from this location for the first few years after they opened. You pay $1.25 to mix and match mini buns and the staffs are very friendly. However, as business picks up the quality of the service is not the same anymore. They increased the price of 3 mini buns to $1.75 AND YOU CAN NOT MIX MATCH! Why would I pay extra for the same buns where i can get $1 from any bakery. Another issue, the boss of the place has a attitude problem. Who needs to be glared or lectured early in the morning. She also tend to overcharge the customers by a nickel/dime. Yes. I know its just a nickel or dime but she did it to me a few times and who knows cents do add up. Never going back to this location ever again. I wanted to give a negative rating but yelp only allows 1 star. BTW i bought 2 tea eggs for $1.25 (0.60 each + 0.05 overcharged). The egg whites are glued to the shell.

Linda C.

Yelp
I was here last week. I brought a box of 4 big buns for $4.25. I brought 3 small hot dog buns for $1.25. I brought 3 small pineapple buns for $1.25. I brought 3 small sweet sesame glutinous balls for $1.25. I brought 3 small salty glutinous balls for $1.25. I brought 3 small egg custard tarts for $1.25. Not impressed, very LITTLE filling in each, just a DOT. I had better.

Yelp
this is actually the main branch of the golden steamer in manhattan. http://www.yelp.com/biz/golden-steamer-manhattan everything from the manhattan branch comes right from the one in brooklyn! the manhattan branch may feature some extra dim sum dishes not on the brooklyn menu, but the brooklyn branch is bigger with more seating. it's right on the corner, across the street from a competitor. but i must say, golden steamer has more variety and generally, everything is better! texture, taste, aesthetics. the man taus are reallly good and so it the lau sa bau (yellow, with cream and egg yolk in the middle). the savory ones include ta siu and the pork with veggie buns. made with hearty ingredients and is healthier than most other chinese eateries. not only is the bread good, but the dumplings are good too! usually, you would find a dumpling with a skimpy piece of meat but golden steamer makes dumplings with lots of veggies and more meat than the norm. i really recommend this place! (:
