Ancient Redwoods, Empty Beaches, and Foraged Fine Dining on California’s Northern Coast | Condé Nast Traveler

"We eased our way toward the Pacific via the Anderson Valley, about two and a half hours north of San Francisco, along a winding 35-mile stretch of Highway 128. ... 'Tasting rooms have doubled in the last 12 years,' said Paula Viehmann after bringing us a flight of pinot noirs to sip at Goldeneye, a winery and tasting room in the tiny town of Philo."

Beautiful grounds, excellent customer service. Everything was poured with care. Dia was very knowledgeable about the varietals and the history of this sister vineyard of Duckhorn. She generously re-poured the one tasting that I strongly preferred. Would definitely recommend visiting this tasting room.

Amazing wine! We felt so taken care of by the staff. Great vibes overall!

Google
I’ve been waiting for years to check this box on my wine visit list and it didn’t disappoint! The tasting room is impeccable and our host, Dia, was awesome. All of the Duckhorn properties get an A+ and really know how to take care of their members when it comes to the tasting experience. It’s disappointing that the only discount on purchases requires a case. Although the Goldeneye portfolio is exquisite, you pay for it. Their single vineyard wines are a minimum of 20% higher than other Anderson Valley wines of comparable quality. Still giving 5 stars. Go visit and enjoy.

If you’re visiting Anderson Valley Goldeneye is a must do! Service is top notch, wines are delicious, and the grounds are stunning. The tasting experience is also unique. They flight out the tasting and bring to your table with a beautiful menu explaining each wine. The staff is knowledgeable and takes extra time to ensure you enjoy your time!

Absolute weekend in Mendo highlight! My friend and I stopped on our drive back to Marin as recommended by our sweet waitress at Trilium. Love following local’s recs, Goldeneye is so beautiful, delicioussss and great atmosphere. Best part is you can also buy by the glass it’s all so good. Such a trip highlight and dog friendly!! Highly recommend, such a hidden gem. The staff is super friendly, doggy water bowls at the table and super nice separate outdoor bathrooms newly remodeled

This winery is a must visit 👌🏻👌🏻 The wine is amazing and the scenery is just as spectacular! I love coming here on a beautiful sunny day. The backdrop of trees behind the vineyards makes it feel magical. I am always looking forward to returning.

Beautiful grounds. The Duckhorn experience feels a bit more personalized, but we are Goldeneye lovers and thoroughly enjoyed our wine tasting experience.

Had an amazing tasting experience here, beautiful views from the deck, nice charcuterie to go with their incredible wines. Highly recommend visiting 😊

Yelp
Most know Goldeneye, whether it be from your local grocery store, wine shop, or just plain word of mouth. I was excited to finally visit the actual facility where they serve some wine that is a bit harder to find elsewhere or only distributed to their club members. The property is located in the beautiful Anderson Valley with stunning views from their back patio. As for the inside of the tasting room, I'd say it's pretty standard, but that is completely fine by me as I am there for the vino! Tasting format is heavily geared towards Pinot Noir as the valley is well know for it based on it's cool climate. All of the wines were superb, there was not one I did not like to be honest! Being out of the usual tourist stricken wine regions nearby offers a more affordable price point, but there are some higher price items on their menu, but well worth it. I'd happily recommend this winery to anyone looking for a spot in Anderson Valley!

Yelp
Goldeneye up in the Anderson Valley is an absolute gem, and if you're a Pinot Noir enthusiast, this place is a must-visit. The two-hour drive up to the mountains is totally worth it, especially for the stunning natural scenery straight out of a fairy tale. We dropped by last September on a Saturday afternoon and were treated to live music that added a fantastic vibe to the whole experience. Big shoutout to Dia, our wine guide extraordinaire. Not only was she charming and welcoming, but her knowledge about the wines elevated the tasting to another level. The wine selection is top-notch, ranging from their exquisite Pinot Noirs to a delightful sparkling brut rosé. And let's not forget the bites - the charcuterie board and the pate were downright delicious. To wrap things up, they brought us some sparkling wine and let us walk around their beautiful property. Speechless, pictures won't justify how beautiful this place is. Of course we shipped a few bottles home, we could not let that opportunity pass. Being a longtime follower of Goldeneye, as it is part of Duckhorn, one of my favorite wine houses, made the visit extra special for me. If you haven't been yet, put it on your list - it's an experience that combines great wine, a scenic backdrop, and a touch of magic. Cheers to Goldeneye!

Yelp
Excellent Pinots! Couldn't resist joining the wine club. Excellent service and the property is gorgeous.

Yelp
Fantastic wine here, and Ernest was a fantastic host throughout our tasting experience. We also appreciated that they had a Tesla charger on site

Yelp
Tasting room opens early - 10am! So we decided to sneak in an extra tasting. Here's my tasting notes from the Essentials tasting: Started with a Chardonnay and sparkling brut rosé of Pinot/Chardonnay. The sparkling rosé was dry with acidic kick and would be great with seafood (or on its own on a hot day). Starting with their 2020 Anderson Valley Pinot noir has a blue-back color, berry-forward but not sweet. Errs on the side of bitter tea with notes of saddle leather. Classic Anderson Valley Pinot. Very drinkable an 2019 Confluence vineyard Pinot is fruit-forward and herbaceous. Not too much tannins, for those who prefer berry-forward pinots, you will enjoy this one! 2020 Gowan Creek Pinot. Has more tannins to provide structure and can age if you would like. I tasted violet fruits and cassis. Ended with the 2019 Calera Pinot noir, which hails from the Central Coast. It was very structured and texturally more complex, which took me a bit to discern flavors. Little spice and lemon zest, could probably pair it with salmon.

Yelp
A few years later and we decided to make the trek up again and I'm so glad we did. We had a much different experience this year and everyone was so warm and friendly. Shout out to Nena for walking us through the tasting, giving us some history of the area (and "Boontling"), and making our experience so enjoyable. Goldeneye is SO beautiful in the fall. I would definitely recommend coming to the area this time of year. We went to a few other wineries during our trip, and I think Goldeneye had everyone beat in terms of the best wine and view.
google avatar

Shelly A.

Yelp
Ernest was very knowledgeable and very personable. Very descriptive in describing the wines. The wines were awesome! we joined the club!
google avatar

Yelp
If you want to experience great wines and epic views this is the place. The staff are amazing and this is my top Pinot Noir place. Goldeneye have some great wines and it is worth the drive to Andersen valley. The tasting is really nice and you will never forget the vineyard.

Thuy L.

Yelp
I'm giving this place 2 stars because the wine was good. Hospitality wise, terrible. The skater boy looking host just made us feel super unwelcome. I been to many wineries, all wineries always educate us on the wine they're pouring for us, he didn't. While proceed to tell us that the backyard area is reserved for guests drinking wine from the glasses only, he failed to mention that the lower deck was for reserved guests only. Overall, I don't know if it's a minority's thing but it sure felt like it. We won't be back, we just wanted to warn others.
google avatar

Andrew O.

Yelp
The service was really bad. The host seemed annoyed, maybe it was because we arrived 30 min before closing time, either way we felt we were a nuisance to the staff, and made our anderson valley trip subdued due to the poor service. The view is nice but if youre being treated like a sack of potatoes it doesnt make the experience enjoyable does it?
google avatar

Rebecca G.

Yelp
My partner planned a birthday tasting for me - we'd both never been but it came highly recommended. The tasting books had our name on them which was a nice touch. Mostly our wine guide Satoru(hopefully I'm spelling this correctly!) was so amazingly patient, kind and personable. He made this experience so wonderful and we wish him all the happiness in the world!!!

Yelp
We pointed our car towards the direction of Anderson Valley and drove right past Goldeneye Winery and U-turned and headed straight to their tasting room. On this beautiful day, our little walk-in party of 2, were greeted with a splash Vin Gris and quickly seated overlooking the most breathtaking view of the Anderson Valley. We took in the Essentials Tasting of the most beautiful pinots Anderson Valley had to offer. Our sommelier, Ernesto, was very knowledgeable of each wine and let us know some of his favorites. I shared with him that we had a couple of 2019 Goldeneye's at home and he advised us to let them age a few more years. We left with 2 beautiful pinots which we plan to add to our collection. Oh Anderson Valley, so many pinots, so little time....but we'll be back.

Yelp
We're members of the Duckhorn portfolio and this was our first time at Goldeneye. The outdoor tasting area is gorgeous with amazing views, and the staff is so friendly and welcoming. The wines are solid and it's nice to be able to try wines across their portfolio. Overall a good spot if you're in the area!
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
Spectacular experience. Ask for Ernest- so knowledgeable and personable. Beautiful setting, even better wines. Just go.
google avatar

Kiki M.

Yelp
We were warmly greeted and comfortably seated inside where we had some delicious snacks while hearing about the wine menu and tasting. We had not made an appt, but we're still able to be served though had to wait a bit for an open table outside. We were astonished at the incredible views outside. We felt immersed in the lap of luxury as we sipped and conversed about wine. I truly can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Oh my goodness, Goldeneye Winery is quite possibly one of the most beautiful wineries I have ever visited. The manicured grounds with the vineyards and tree covered mountains in the background were stunning! Being a big fan of Duckhorn, I was excited to try Goldeneye and it did not disappoint. Their outdoor seating area only has five tables so there was adequate spacing and the staff were constantly spraying everything down. Their pinots were amazing the the staff explained every wine in detail. If I were to visit only one winery in the area again, it would be this one!

Yelp
Visiting Goldeneye is such a treat. The winery is breathtakingly beautiful. The pinots and sparkling wines are so so good. And the staff goes above and beyond in their hospitality. I most recently visited a few weeks ago. I believe the gentleman who helped us is named Doug. He welcomed us with a splash of bubbles and happily accommodated the two extra guests we had in our party. He was also very welcoming of the two dogs and toddler we had in tow. He was the perfect mix of informative and helpful while still giving us plenty of breathing room to enjoy our company and the tasting. He threw in several extra tastings and let us revisit anything we liked. We purchased a few of our favorites - the Confluence and Gowan pinots, a bottle of their brut rose (I love this sparkling wine - it's very light in color and has a mellow creaminess to it), and a bottle of the Migration rose and Goldeneye rose to have a rose taste test (the Migration came out on top!). I honestly can't wait for our next trip up north so I can visit again.

Yelp
Visited Goldeneye Winery during Pinot Fest 2021. They offered a nice wine and cheese pairing, and the grounds were beautiful. Our server had information for us about each of our wines and cheeses, and they all went together nicely. The wines were not much to our liking however, but we did only try pinots, so cannot comment on other types. We did buy a bottle of Pinot, but it was mostly out of courtesy.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
Four of us visited here on a Friday in August and we had an exceptional experience. The winery "garden" area offers a spectacular view of the estate vinyards and the forested hills beyond. Our tasting experience host was both attentive and non obtrusive. The location demanded exceptional wines, and they did not disappoint. We are very familiar with virtually all of the great Pinot noir being bottled in the Sonoma County area and the Goldeneye pinots stand with the best of them. Goldeneye is very much worth the 90 minute drive from the Santa Rosa area to Mendocino's Anderson Valley.

Sydney L.

Yelp
We were most excited to try this Duckhorn subsidiary, however, the wines were not very impressive, especially at the prices per bottle. For a winery that boasts its terroir, the Pinots and Pinot blends lacked any unique qualities that distinguished them from other great options both in Anderson Valley as well as greater Russian River/Dry Creek area. The aesthetics of the vineyard were outstanding and we could tell other servers were really passionate about their offerings. Our server was fine, pretty take it or leave attitude but I also appreciated that she did not try to push any bottles on us as there was no way I was paying for a wine I would not be able to pick out of a line up. If you go, go for the beautiful landscape and sit under the oak tree, but don't expect any outstanding new palette influencer.

Taryn W.

Yelp
I have always been such a fan of the Pinots, so naturally joined the wine membership through the Duckhorn family awhile back. Fast forward to this weekend, my boyfriend planned a proposal at the gorgeous estate. Could not have been a more perfect moment. So thankful to Alexis and Ernest at Goldeneye for setting up and contributing to such an amazing moment in our lives. Will be coming back at the very least annually for our anniversary!

Cindy M.

Yelp
Great Winery and beautiful view! Saturo was amazing and really spent the extra time with us to make our experience one to remember!
google avatar

Valerie A.

Yelp
This was our second visit to Goldeneye, after the first visit we joined the wine club! Their pinots are just amazing, some of the best we've ever tasted. We had a wonderful tasting with Alexis. They have a lot less seating right now due to COVID, but we didn't feel rushed at all during our stay. We came a little early, at 11:30, and the weather was really cool and pleasant. The grounds are spectacular and it's such a relaxing view. Loved all the Pinots but especially the 10 degrees. Don't miss it!
google avatar

Wendy C.

Yelp
Monica helped us and was so knowledgeable we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The sitting areas inside are very nice and comfortable. They being the glasses to you and sit down and talk about the wine. We will be back!
google avatar

Craig J.

Yelp
The Director of Hospitality reached out to me which was nice. We chatted a bit but at the end of the day, our spring pickup was comped and our membership was "not renewed" on their end. First wine club I have been kicked out of but hey, I'm not classy enough.

Eva S.

Yelp
Great view, great wine and just a lovely property. Doug was our host today and he was sweet.
google avatar

Kartik J.

Yelp
Never have I ever gone to this winery and be disappointed. The service is impeccable and the ambiance is phenomenal. The vineyard behind the winery is simply majestic. The Pinot Noir's are top-notch, albeit a bit pricey. If you like high end Pinot's from Anderson Valley, this is a must visit winery.
google avatar

Carol Y.

Yelp
I was impressed with their service already even before we arrived. We ran into extremely bad long weekend traffic so I called Goldeneye asking if possible to change the reservation, they were very accommodating and changed our table to 90mins later. We ended up arriving 20mins earlier than expected, and was greeted with refreshing rose while they prepared our table, and we got seated within 10mins. I highly recommend their elevated tasting experience, the food paring was very well selected and went really well with each wine. We're both huge Pinot Noir, which Goldeneye specializes in, we loved most of the wines, but their "10 degrees" Pinot is a show stopper! Worth owning for a special occasion. The tasting area has a great view of the vineyards, the garden and blooming flowers add a touch of romance especially on a nice day. A great place for wine sipping with friends or significant other. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I thought it was a little overpriced, both tasing fee and the wines. But we did have a great time
google avatar

Roisin I.

Yelp
Impersonal and cold staff. Snobby and pretentious staff who seem very bored with having to cater to you. Sad as I liked the tastings and property. No waters offered to my non tasting members. Other wineries in the area were FAR kinder and warm welcome. Maybe due to corporate strength they don't need the business?
google avatar

Cemarie D.

Yelp
Taste of Confluence is a must tasting experience! Here from Seattle and we met Doug, who spent the afternoon with us. Such a great experience, getting on the ATV up to the oldest, largest Oak tree - where we tasted through the Confluence wines. Ending the tasting down with a view of the vineyards. Doug is so knowledgeable about the wines and the whole region. Favorites were the Hillside, Lower Bench, and Brut Rose was amazing! I wish we lived closer so we could visit often. But we'll be back!
google avatar

Barb M.

Yelp
Compared to Duckhorn, this is a very disappointing tasting room and service. Good, expensive wine but no ambiance to match the wine.
google avatar

Mary V.

Yelp
By far the best tasting experience in Anderson Valley. Top notch staff, great safety protocols and fabulous wines. Joined the wine club, it is that good. The views are breathtaking!
google avatar

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
Absolutely lovely grounds and quite tasty wines too. The view from the outdoor tasting patio is absolutely gorgeous, looking over the garden and into the vineyard with the forested hills beyond. The staff were all friendly and knowledgeable and we got to try 8 different wines (with some crackers on the side).
google avatar

Kristine T.

Yelp
Trying to find tasting res during co-vid is a stressful process but Goldeneye made everything exceptionally seamless. All their staff prioritized safety (mask and cleanliness protocol) without sacrificing hospitality and warmth. We had Doug taking care of us, he was genuinely kind and knowledgeable. We thoroughly enjoyed the wines and view and were happy to sign up for their wine club. Thank you to everyone there working hard to keep us all safe and still enjoying the simple pleasures of life!
google avatar

Dave Y.

Yelp
On a two day journey up and down Anderson valley we stopped in many wineries. This was our least favorite by far. First, it was expensive, both the tasting and the wine prices. But the real problem is the wines. Compared to every other winery stop we made, the Goldeneye wines seemed watered down and lacking in intensity. We sampled 5 different Pinots, all seemed quite similar. Light on nose, medium in color and truly light flavors. Staff was nice, but too busy talking to each other in the office. The day we were there, Thursday, it was pretty slow, we were the only visitors. Another annoyance was a huge outbreak of fruit flies. They of course landed in the wines, and no one seemed concerned about them. Not worth a stop compared to so many fun places with good stories. It almost seemed like they took the St. Helena tasting room concept and plunked it down in Anderson Valley, don't think that is a good idea.
google avatar

Adele T.

Yelp
Holy Alexander Valley. This was our first visit and if you love pinots like I do it is a MUST. Beautiful sit down tasting and garden/ vineyards to walk through at non Napa prices! But really, the entire tasting was Pinot. It was a dream. Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Al B.

Yelp
We had an amazing afternoon tasting here. We tried the pinot noirs and other samples they offered and they had a card about a discount on Rose wine. We asked if we could sample few and our server brought out samples of of them. We not only bought the Pinot we usually give out as gifts, also 11 Roses for ourselves. Absolutely gorgeous gardens and vineyard
google avatar

Audrey C.

Yelp
Being Portfolio members, we're already very familiar with Goldeneye wines, but this was our first time ever making the trek up to Philo. Every bottle of Goldeneye from our shipments or that we've tasted at Paraduxx and Duckhorn have been amazing, so we didn't expect anything less. It was nice to be able to taste in their outdoor patio, overlooking the vineyard. It was rather quiet at 11am, and filled up slightly during our visit, but it was never crowded. Our tasting included 6 wines. Unfortunately, because of the nature of Goldeneye, there weren't many additional bottles open for us to taste. However, their inventory did include some wines that we had not yet tried, so we decided to take a gamble and purchase those. The drive up to Philo was not the easiest, and thankfully it was a dry, sunny day, but now we know what makes it so special. The Pinots cannot be matched elsewhere. It's no wonder they have a Pinot festival every year! If only we heard about the festival earlier, we would try to make it, but nearby lodging books up a year in advanced. Perhaps we'll make it backup one day soon...
google avatar

Laura D.

Yelp
Beautiful views. service was great except that yelp indicated they close at 5 and we arrived around 4:25 and they were already closing shop. We were given a standing tasting (they usually seat you in the courtyard) - but at least they comped it ($15 per person). We bought wine so expected that to be comped regardless (but seems like most of the reviews do indicate its an expensive winery to visit)
google avatar

Delaney B.

Yelp
Came up here for my birthday weekend. I had visited Duckhorn before in Napa and loved their wines so I was looking forward to trying one of their partner wineries. We made reservations prior for a cheese plate added in and sat outside which overlooked the beautiful vineyards and fountain. They are mostly known for their pinots given the area and they are delicious. The staff was very friendly and attentive which made the experience very enjoyable. Next time I am up in Mendocino I will definitely be visiting again!
google avatar

Brooke B.

Yelp
The tasting room staff was kind enough to accommodate us even though I had made the reservation for the wrong day. They put out one of the most informative, well designed tastings I've seen. Each wine was served on a coaster that had detailed information about the wine, including down to the date the grapes were harvested. We sat outside on the patio and the staff did a great job of answering questions when we has them but for the most part leaving us alone to enjoy the wine and the setting. I'm taking away one star because of the price. Anderson Valley is my favorite place to go wine tasting because it is low key, unpretentious and they have delicous wine. The prices at Goldeneye feel like a little bit of Napa creeping in.
google avatar

Alexandra K.

Yelp
as members of paraduxx, we had heard a lot about goldeneye from staff at both paraduxx and duckhorn, and were so excited to check out the winery. the grounds were beautiful and serene - seeing the mountains covered in fog and the vineyards were warm and sunny. however our experience was underwhelming to say the least. the staff was very rigid with tastings, unwilling to let us try anything on the menu that wasn't part of the tasting flight. the woman who helped us didn't bother explaining what we were tasting, origins, or anything. it felt incredibly commercial and robotic, which is opposite of our experience with the rest of the portfolio locations in california and washington. would encourage management to train your staff up more on customer service, especially for those who are wine club members
google avatar

Jack G.

Yelp
The setting is certainly beautiful and the wines are good. Unfortunately not has that "Napa attitude". Employees are unfriendly, all they do is pour and walk away. We tried to talk about their wines, but they aren't interested. And it's not like they were busy. If you're looking for that "'faux" tasting experience, this place is it. Anderson Valley is full of wonderful wineries that are welcoming and appreciate your business.
google avatar

Catherine S.

Yelp
The grounds are so beautiful, the price for the tasting was excellent. Their Pinot Noirs are very tasty!
google avatar

Jana C.

Yelp
Came here for an afternoon tasting ($20) of their high end Pinot Noirs. I'd gander that an average price point here is about $45/ bottle, moving on up, like George J. Wonderfully printed cards to explain the terroir (photo), and the notes of the kind of Pinot one is drinking. In large part, most of wines sampled are complex, have notes of pepper and higher tannic levels than I prefer. But the grounds!! the beautiful, lovely, meditative grounds... and walking through the vineyard to behold the centuries old black oak tree agains the hill. Not snooty. Explained and answered many of my questions. A staid presence of "excess within control" (anyone can name the classic?). Just gorgeous. Glad we U turned and made the stop, before heading to Husch and Navarro. PS spotted their Migration PN at Lunardis Danville and BevMo as well.
google avatar

Johnny N.

Yelp
Came here for a quick charge and what an amazing spot. They have their COVID game down from greet to seat. Alexis was amazing. She started us off with a rose while she prepared our table, then she walked us over to our table and talked through our wines as we enjoyed them. We finished off with their ten degrees and it was amazing. Will be back. The scenery is awesome and worth the visit. Great folks here :)
google avatar

Angelique L.

Yelp
My husband and I became members of Goldeneye when we visited Duckhorn in January. We enjoyed the Gowan Creek Pinot we were able to try and decided to join them, as we don't get too many good Pinots currently with any of our memberships. We were lucky enough to be a part of their spring social, and enjoyed some delicious bites with delicious wines. We were also able to try some of Migrations wines and those were really good as well. The staff was extremely friendly & very helpful. Only con is, we wish it was closer so we could visit more often. We will be sure to return, hopefully soon!

Caroline M.

Yelp
We just did a tasting at Goldeneye. What a beautiful setting! And our guide, Matt, was so helpful, knowledgeable, and gracious. Highly recommend!!

Judy E.

Yelp
This is a wonderful tasting experience! In addition to the wine tasting, they offer several cheese boards as well and the one we ordered was delicious. The service was stellar, great wines and a view of the grounds and vineyards that was spectacular. Fall color everywhere...so lovely and fun. Worth the drive but recommend a reservation.
google avatar

Yelp
When on thinks of California Pinot Noir, they usually equate it to light and fruity wine that pairs with seafood, chicken or other like dishes. However, the Anderson Valley is home to a whole different kind of Pinot. Goldeneye is classic Anderson Valley, big structured, earthy that can stand up to some of your more hearty dishes. If you are a fan of French Burgundy then you will fall in love with Goldeneye. Their wine is world class and the tasting experience is among the best I have ever had. You are assigned a table, and sat down to a flight of pinot noir and given a education in the art of wine making. Reservations are not mandatory, but recommended especially if you want to maximize your tasting experience. FYI, the wine here is on the pricey side but we did join their wine club as it does include access to other wineries (Including Duckhorn) and offers free shipping with any order.
