A Filipino Shortbread Recipe That Brings Fruit Flavors Into the Mix | Eater

"A Filipino bakery chain with locations in California that figures in the author's childhood memories for its colorful polvoron wrappers; the yellow wrapper denoted the classic polvoron, described as sweet, buttery, and flavored with toasted flour and powdered milk. The author's nostalgic connection to these shortbread cookies informed her later riffs on the treat in her cookbook." - Bettina Makalintal

I love Goldilocks for its famous and tasty Phillipinno cuisines , pastry cakes and breads. I always make it a habit to try something different upon each visit and I'm always happy with what I order. The Fresh Lumpia is delicious with its sweet sauce. Im also a big fan of Calabasa. You can't go wrong with Pancit either. Very helpful and attentive staff. Clean environment too.

Another must-stop when you're in San Francisco. We got all our sweet souvenir treats and pastries for our family on the East Coast. We ate lunch here while we were at it. Filipino turo turo food at its finest. They have friendly staff, fresh delicious food, and refreshments with fast service.

Google
I missed Goldilocks in the Philippines and this did not disappoint. The food was fresh and masarap (delicious). Sweet treats and delicacies abound. They even have frozen foods to make at home like Siopai, shomai, and lumpia. Plenty of parking and friendly staff.

Google
Slow. Soooo slow. By the time I sit down? My arazcaldo is cold, my siapo cold, and lumpia looks like it’s been cooked, frozen, and then heated. I’d give one star by my wife’s thoroughly a pinai and likes the place. The only upside i see is all the employees are of retirement age. Seniors need work, too. This is the Way😄. Oops! Wife didn’t like her food either. Down to 1 star now. And, look what we paid!

When you are craving Filipino dishes and Filipino pastries, Goldilocks is still a great place to go to. It always brings back memories of your childhood.

September 10, 2023 bought brazo de Mercedes and Sansival around 4pm , I’m from sacramento , upon arriving home so excited to taste the brazo mercedez and disappointing the yellow thing inside was sour it was already spoiled we traveled 1 hour and 30 minutes and the product is inside a cooler while in transport, we called to let this Goldilocks branch know what happened and they are so rude we just want them to know check their product inside their ref . Regularly I don’t expect a refund just want them to know what happened so next time no customer will feel the disappointment from excited. My mom called after explaining , they hang up my mother .So Rude. Customer service is so unprofessional .

I decided to try Goldilocks's Taho instead of the usual Halo Halo special since I haven't tasted it in a very long time. Not bad, actually good. For me, the brown syrup could be sweeter because of my sweet tooth taste.

Anthony M

Google
Very disappointed with what they call ‘sizzling sisig’. This is not sizzling sisig. They should just take it off the menu if Goldilocks cant offer sisig that actually sizzles. This used to be my favorite sisig in the bay area a decade ago but wont be coming back here for sure.

Yelp
The food is decent, there is plenty of seating inside, and the service is good. I love getting the Carioca here.

Yelp
Goldilocks should check their inventories .. Bought few of their pastries including Biko last Monday, the 12th of May 2025.. I was gonna give some as a gift to my family but to my dismay, for just 2 hours after purchase, the Biko had surprises inside... MOLD! Yuck Mold and More disgusting Mold! See for yourself!!! I called and the woman who handled the complaint was so rude! Do you actually believe I put the mold there??? Is that what you do? Instead of correcting the mistake and not add more embarrassment to the store, correct it, that's how you handle a business! I feel sorry for the owners! I will never support this bakeshop anymore! Not only because of the product but because of the nasty attitude of their employees! I will definitely report this disgusting product, very unsafe health wise

Tai T.

Yelp
The mocha cake is my go-to!! They have a wide variety of sweets and hot food to choose from. Even snacks like Polvoron which my little sister loves. The staff are so sweet and welcoming and there's plenty of seating to enjoy your food.

Yelp
We had to pick up a party tray of lumpia last minute . We placed the order in the morning around 930am and it was ready by noon ! I've been to this location plenty of times to get some dessert or polvoron but it was my first time ordering a party tray. Ordering was quick and easy ! It was $68.99 for a tray of 100 pork lumpia . It came with two plastic containers of sweet and sour dipping sauce .

Yelp
I've been to a handful of different Goldilocks bakeries, and they're all pretty much the same. Easy food and I like how they make the halo hollow fresh for you, as well as all their delicious baked goods. At this particular location I didn't realize there were two different lines one for ordering the food and another for pick up/pre-ordered items. I got in the wrong line but the lady in the front was really nice and understanding since she was there to pick up a cake, and I was in line to order fresh food. Lol I bought some of the dinner rolls, and they were delicious and moist!! I was afraid my house would get too warm and I put them in the fridge and luckily that didn't tarnish the flavor or anything. If I leave one out on the countertop for about five minutes, it gets to room temperature, and it's just as fresh as it was the first day I bought it. It's been three days and they still taste delicious!! Everything was clean and organized in the store, and as I was looking at all the baked packaged goods, a gentleman that worked there was actually organizing the pastries and putting out more. Make sure you check the dates, but everything was within a day or two of being made. I will definitely be back again!

Yelp
Oh my it just continues to get worse. The food I don't know who can afford to buy it as the prices are astronomical. If it were cooked properly and tasted good even that would at least partially excuse those high prices. Last random visit months ago was for a tiny portion of overpriced slop masquerading as pinakbet. It was so tasteless we had to add our own shrimp paste. Yesterday we decided to try ukoy. Just one piece since they're charging an ungodly $6.99 for it. Nothing authentic about this ukoy or what looked like a large hash brown. I suppose the composition was mostly of shredded squash. But that was all there was and it was half burnt. Totally falling apart so you touch it and matchstick sized 'hash brown' particles are all over the place. No shrimp as it's supposed to have either. So why are they charging so much?
google avatar

Yelp
I have been getting their mocha cakes for almost three decades now (WHO REMEMBERS THE OLD LOCATION WHERE THERE WERE SO MANY "CAKES" display for any occassions, that location was HUGE), but I realized that they have gotten smaller and smaller and mostly icing and less cake. The quarter sheet is almost $40 perhaps more and you can get a better quality at Shengkee or even 85 degrees. Just like any other Filipino establishments they charge way too much. Nowadays, I prefer to get the mocha and chocolate rolls and their frozen siopai because not siopai around the Bay are good.

Yelp
I love good filipino food except for this super, super sweet fresh lumpia that is like slurping thick, sugary, syrup. I was not even asked if I wanted the sugary sauce slopped all over my take-out order of lumpia. OMG! The lumpia sauce was shockingly sweet, sweeter than a custard pastry, lol. Next time I order, if there will be a next time, the sauce will be separate. Sadly, I doubt if I will be back.

Yelp
I love Filipino food and recently visited Goldilocks in SSF. The pancit and chicken adobo are very tasty, the sticky rice desert is delicious! The people working in the store are very friendly. The place is very clean. I will visit again and I want to try other dishes next time! Recommend this place to my friends!

Yelp
Came to get the sweets necessities for Dad's 82nd birthday and bought him the new Heavenly chocolate cake. I wanted to love this cake but came short of a mere filling. So I LOVE the chocolate roll and it's filling. Chocolatey goodness. Could you say chocolate fix - he'll ya! I bought the new cake since I was told It's totally chocolate in the inside and it's filling. I told dad I got him an all chocolate cake new from Goldilocks with fresh fruit on top. Aye to his dismay it was a yellow custard and some light brown cream. Aww a little disappointed on both our part. We got chocolate cake but not the chocolate filling we were expecting. This would have been an awesome chocolate cake with a chocolate ganache as a filling with all the fresh fruit on the top. I wonder if I can request one made that way. If you like custard filling with fruit on top, this would be for you. It was just bland for our palette. But overall dad ate his cake had a great karaoke evening at home with family. He wants me to go back and get him the choco-mocha crunch cake next time. Our favorite. Thanks again Goldilocks!

Yelp
My go to for halohalo on a warm beautiful day. They put a lot of ingredients and an ube ice cream to top it off. Yum!!!

Yelp
Quality/Quantity - When my daughter was a kid, this was our go-to brand for cakes. They made the best and most impressive cakes. It was expensive, but worth it. Always a wow factor with our guests. See pictures for bakery items and menus of what they are selling today. Atmosphere - Small bakery, which sells many other foods, see pictures. They are in the corner of the mall, next to the supermarket, and it can be easy to miss. Open 7 days a week from 8am or 9am to 8pm; see my picture, or Yelp. Plenty of mall parking. Service - N/A, just bought pastries from 85 degree bakery. But I wanted to visit to bring back good memories. Price - N/A. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1966 in the Philippines . I am glad this location is in South San Francisco. 1970's opened its first location in Artesia, CA. Currently over 600 locations.

Yelp
Love!! Absolutely love the staff, food and restaurant. The bakery side is filled with amazing goodies, so fresh.

Yelp
I love Goldilocks because the food is always reliably good and very consistent. Our main staple is always the pancit palabok, the asada pork bun and lumpia. The people that work there are always incredibly friendly and they always remind me to put in my phone number to get points . We've always been able to rely on getting sweets and cakes on the spot !

Ronald R.

Yelp
food are not great, the cook is putting anything in some of the menu and make combination on meat/ seafoods not a great cook. Food were dirty also lots of unnecessary stuff inside the food.

Yelp
Purchased a box of puto with cheese ($8.49) on Tuesday mid-morning, found mold growing on them in less than 48 hours (by Thursday morning). I mean, how long were these sitting on the shelf when I bought them?? Ew! A bakery shop should not be selling days-old pastries/baked goods to customers... Won't be buying Filipino treats here again. Will stick to Valerios.
google avatar

Allen S.

Yelp
Goldilocks is always delicious. Love the Mamoon. And special Mamoon with cheese, yummy. It's hard to get their product sine I can only get some if I visit California or Chicago. Ordering online tends to be very expensive.
google avatar

Jason V.

Yelp
Good filipino food kinda expensive though with no condiments and service water in place so you still have to ask. Poor sanitation
google avatar

Antoine E.

Yelp
I really, really like their palabok. It's of good value and the right price point. However, the rest of the items are priced so squirrely. Some portions are teeny tiny and are expensive. Still a staple in a good location though.

Ma N.

Yelp
Sorry is not the answer. You need to say, that you will do inspection on each item every day, daily ... all items to check if moldy... before you put or leave in shelves for sale. That's the correct answer. I'm not looking for refund, I need for you to convince your customers that you have inspected each item every day before & during business hours. That's what you need to say. Sorry don't express corrective action to avoid repeating this.
google avatar

Yelp
Still great location... Still appears clean... How do you mess up pancit? Today 3/9/23 @ 3:30p.... Served cold pancit..... And no empanadas available. Cold egg, cold cabbage... Cold noodles. Very disappointing. I love Filipino food unfortunately Goldilocks has just gone downhill. Hard future pass.

Yelp
This Goldilocks is located in a shopping center. There's plenty of parking. I stopped by to pick up some of their baked goods. There was a line at the cash register. However, the line move pretty quick. I bought fudge brownies, ensaynada with cheese, brioche with cheese and coconut, French sponge cake with cheese, brioche with cheese and ube, mocha French sponge cake, cashew wafers with chocolate, and French sponge cake. Out of all the baked goods that I bought, my favorites were the mocha French sponge cake, cashew wafers with chocolate, and the French sponge cake. The other baked goods were on the heavy side. The fudge brownies were too sweet for me. I will have to come back to try some their cooked food.

Cocoa W.

Yelp
Terrible Shanghai lumpia, super thick wrapper, cannot tell what's in the filling. The lumpia size is about half the size before. I wish they bring back the old recipe.

Yelp
Is it me or has the quality at Goldilocks gone waaay down!?!!! I remember in the 90's Goldilocks was revered in the Filipino community as to what Porto's is to the Cuban community today (in my opinion of course). We bought the mocha sheet cake and I remember how moist and delicious it was back in the days. So I thought I'd buy it for my partner's birthday cake but alas the flavor was well there was no flavor. My son said it tasted like eating a sponge -no flavor. The icing was ok, it wasn't too sweet but again it was not as I remembered growing up. Service was friendly, ambiance seemed like it was more like a mom and pops restaurant which can be a nice feeling but it's a chain/corporate restaurant/bakery so it should be less cluttered and have an open airy flow. Sadly this Goldilocks was not a good fit.
google avatar

Camille M.

Yelp
Came here for Easter 2022. :) Food was yummy the desserts were yummy too! I bought some baked goods too such as the various ensaymada, puto (rice cake) and gelatin. A nice treat since I live couple minutes away, not too near, but don't come here a lot.
google avatar

Rhona G.

Yelp
Had a childhood craving for Goldilocks mocha cake. I remember growing up having birthdays with a mocha cake from Goldilocks. So i am glad they have small individual wrapped mocha sponge cake. The sponge was light and soft with a flavor that reminded me of my birthday cake when i was just a child. The service was just with the cashier purchase so it was alright. They have plenty of indoor dining. There's parking in the shopping center.

Yelp
Goldilocks South SF serves the best-tasting Kalderetang Kambing!!! Within a month, my family has driven from Fresno to the bay area 5x to escape the valley heat, and we always ordered the kalderetang kambing from this restaurant! It has a taste of mild spiciness that makes this dish really delicious! i just ordered half-a-tray serving for our club- the Filipino-American Cycling Team (FACT) annual family camp potluck! I would like my team to taste the Kalderatang kambing that Goldilocks South SF cooks! Kudos to their chef!

Cari A.

Yelp
I've been craving some halo halo and decided to stop by Goldilocks. I ended up picking up some lechon, mocha cake, and polvoron. Pros: -halo halo was so refreshing -lechon is nice and crispy -they had assorted polvoron -free parking lot in front Cons: -n/a

Yelp
They were out of their single serving flan and I was told they only sell their huge family sized flan which is like $22. Their lunch special was very very average tasting. Their meat tasted weird and their pancit was sooooo dry. Their lumpia was very sad with hardly any filling, just a lot of fried wrapper. I was totally disappointed
google avatar

Leah P.

Yelp
Great location with lots of parking :) came in at 9:30am, ordered fresh lumpia aand taho but unfortunately taho is still being made :( sigh, i cane here for the taho :( The fresh lumpia was good.
google avatar

Yelp
No frills, hit or miss Filipino cafeteria style food food and bakery. If you arrive early enough, you can usually get the food and baked goods fresh however, the consistency is not always there. I still like to visit this location for the baked goods but the lack of quality control lately makes this location a little bit of a risky gamble on my part.
google avatar

Yelp
This is the OG of Filipino food and bakeries in the area. I used to go when this area didn't even have a Red Ribbon, Jollibee nor Valerios. It used to be so packed and had a plethora of food and pastries, cakes, sweets. Now they have some competition for I'd say the last 10 years. I guess after tasting other restaurants and bakeries, you get more picky and specific. I used to love their Pandesal, Diniguan, Enseymadas and Mocha Rolls. They've expanded their items to offer even frozen items. The grab and go convenience is set up at this location which is more popular than before when a clerk had to hand you the items. Today's visit was to buy a couple of Mocha Mamons and pick up a Halo-Halo bday treat. The Halo-Halo was topped with Ube ice cream, puffed rice below that, red gelatin squares, some Ube jam that tasted like cookie dough in a good way, small lech flan pieces, macapuno strips, shaved ice and evaporated milk. It was satisfying and refreshing even if it was in the mid 50ºs this afternoon. I almost ate it in the car but took it home. It was pretty satisfying even if I shared it with my Sister-in-Law. AND had a Carnitas Bowl about an hour before. Oh well....birthday calories don't count!!

aurora t.

Yelp
I never really don't look at the receipt but for breakfast silog for $13.49 this is highway robbery. You're a bake shop not a restaurant, give us a break as a consumer. Also don't buy the pasty - they have MOLD. They should be reported to the public health for selling old & mold products. I would give 0 star but no choice the lowest is 1. Get your act together.
google avatar

Tasha L.

Yelp
A came a few times just to buy the bakery goods. I had 2 incidents where the banana bread had mold the next day after buying it. I brought it up to the manager and nothing
google avatar

Kathy A.

Yelp
I don't have any reservations about this establishment. We went here today to buy Bangus Relleno (spelling?) and to my surprise, it came out to $42 something! The actual item was decent sized, but I guess I wasn't expecting it to be so expensive. I was thinking about cashing out $16-$21 for it? But it's a really good dish. I love eating it! I basically grew up on this dish since my mom used to always make homemade ones for the holidays and birthdays. We also purchased the puto cheese and ube combo tray which came in 12 pieces I think? It was $16 something. Got some good stuff going on there. Always a treat if I need a quick Filipino dish fix! But I sometimes go to other places if I'm being picky.
google avatar

Ginny Y.

Yelp
They have a shared designated parking lot. The front of the store has signage that remind people to be safe and practice social distancing. The store inside also has signage and the employees have face masks on. There's an assortment of items to choose from and I was specifically there for polvoron and ube. They have a hand sanitizer at the register. While shopping, they didn't ask if I needed anything but I could tell if I had stopped one of them they would've happily answered any questions I had. There's a sign near the register that says, "Due to the shortage and spike in cost of meat products, we are temporarily adjusting our current pricing for some of our hot food items accordingly."
google avatar

Anne F.

Yelp
I called to inquire about a cake for an event we're having soon. I spoke to a lady who then transferred me over to her supervisor. We just wanted a simple 10 inch cake. I asked the supervisor if we were able to get this and she told me if it's a custom cake, we charge by slice. SHE THEN SAID... "A 10 inch cake is 44 slices and your cake will end up being $200". I asked her to repeat what she said because WHAT...... lol!!! I've worked in events, party planning, etc and I just couldn't believe. If you don't want to offer any service to me just provide another excuse. A 10 inch cake typically serves 12-15 people. So 44 slices for who?? Ants?? As a fellow filipina, i'm really disappointed in this location as my family and I grew up with Goldilocks. Never would I get a cake here.

Yelp
Noelle's Yelp Notebook 2019 Over 30 years ago the first Goldilocks Bakery opened up in Northern California in Daly City - it was a large restaurant and bakery. Times have changed and the new Goldilocks Bakery seems like a smaller footprint from ages ago. It's located in a very busy shopping center that has other popular spots like Philz Coffee, Bonchon, Kumon etc. We came here this past Sunday after church. Parking was difficult because we arrived a little after 12 p.m. which is the lunch rush. When you enter you'll notice a large room with tons of tables - family style, long rows. On the far right are the bakery items. In the very back you'll see the cafeteria style like ordering area and two cash registers, one register for hot foods and the other for bakery purchases. We ordered the following: pancit sotanghon (3/5) $6.59 it had good flavors but it was a tad on the salty side. 2 bbq pork sticks (3/5) $3.99 per stick it was delicious but there were few pieces of just fat with no meat. 2 chicken empanadas (3/5) $2.49 per piece cooked well and not bad tasting. Torta Talong (zero stars) $7.29 round greasy torta and wasn't even crisp. Very disappointing. Steamed Rice (1/5) $1.55 very dry rice, not the best. 2 orders of Lumpia Shanghai (3/5) $4.39 per order. Great flavors but not crispy enough. Sago't Gulaman (2/5) $4.59 sweet, refreshing but more gelatin cubes than sago balls. Meh! Halo-Halo (1/5) $5.99 the quality of the sweet beans at the bottom seemed on the tough side. The ice cream was good but overall was bad. Bakery Items Mamon Special (3/5) $1.59 all the mamon special we're about to expire. I bought 4 nonetheless. 12 pack of Mamon Regular (4/5) $19.08 the expiration date was further out so you could tell it was fresh. Pastillas Fresh (3/5) $11.99 it's refrigerated yet it says on the package needs to be kept frozen. Still bought it. It's chaotic during the lunch hour. The old ladies behind the counter are hardworking and nice but the quality of the food it's on the salty side. I noticed the bakery items looked like they were frozen then thawing out in particular the cuchinta, the puto ube and regular. They also lacked items such as their signature boat tarts and ran out of the longanisa in the bao buns frozen. It's a hard pass for me on this location. I'd rather go to the other Goldilocks Bakery in Daly City - better food. Noelle's Notes Skip it

Kathy M.

Yelp
Special thanks to there cake decorator jun for helping me out with my cake, he suggested me that they have a promo this month so i choose that. Added a shanghai tray in short notice and it took less than 10 minutes without pre-order. The ambiance is great, since its in a plaza

Yelp
COCKROACH! So gross! we were in line to get our food then this roach came out of the food heater where they store the Lechon Kawali. I can just imagine how many brothers and sisters this little guy has in their kitchen. instantly lost our appetite.
google avatar

Yelp
This rating is more a 3.8 . The service is great but I was expecting more of a pastry selection. I like the space and it has good ambience. Next time I will have to get the food.

Jessica S.

Yelp
Love the staff and the food! Ube ensaymada is so good! Love the bicol express and sisig! Staff are very nice

Yelp
Name it, they have every dish from my childhood lol, I like goin to this location because it's clean and they're always fully staffed, especially during the holidays, they have lumpia and pastries on deck. I never saw them run out of anything Wait time: not that long but during peak hours there's usually a line Service: fast and friendly Ambiance: location is super clean Price: a little pricey compared to other Filipino restaurant but it's quality food WIGBA (would I go back again) YES, highly recommend for those who want to try authentic Filipino cuisine. Try the following: Skewers Lumpia Empanada Siopao asado Sinigang Bangus sisig Sweets: Taho Sago gulaman Sansrival Sylvana Leche Flan Egg pie Ensaymada

Rochelle B.

Yelp
They served so little yet expensive. They need to make it combo for $10 or inclined their servings atleast. This is a not worth it for $10 bucks.
google avatar

Carmina R.

Yelp
Why 2.5 stars, folks?! Let's round to 3, 3.5, yeah? I mean yes, my mom can throw down in the kitchen and make these dishes HER way and it'll be the best Filipino food you've ever tasted. Okay yes, the customer service isn't superb here, but hey, on a rushed Monday night to get dinner on the table... ill take it! Sometimes you need that fast pancit fix. Ain't no shame in the sootanghon (noodle) game! Alright, it's nothing fancy, and sure it reminds you of getting food in your high school cafeteria (in pre-covid times, you'd get a tray, get in line and choose your food). However, it does the job to satisfy a quick Filipino food craving. I love sootanghon noodles in pancit, so I actually love their version (if my mom gets her hands on a Yelp account, I'll be in trouble). My kids love the caldereta here because it's soft, boneless beef, in a tomato based stew that is sooo good with rice. We also get the fresh lumpia to add more "vegetables" to our meal. Will fresh lumpia ever replace fried ones? Nevaaa! It does taste good though; especially with the garlic sauce on the side. I sent my husband in with specific instructions to pick up dinner. He comes out with a bonus item: puto with cheese on top. The best puto I've had in a while coming from a Filipino chain? Say it ain't so. It had everything you want in a carb heavy snack.. a dense, soft, chewy rice muffin with melted cheese on top. It was amazing. I had 3. What? Yes. How many weight watchers points? We don't know, we don't (currently) care. Try it!
google avatar

Venus L.

Yelp
It's quick Filipino food. While there are options out in the world that taste better, Goldilocks is able to serve up the food quicker and somewhat cheaper especially if you're already nearby. We've gotten their sisig and dinuguan before and both dishes were okay. The dishes came with white rice, not garlic rice which I love so I was slightly bummed. Parking in Westborough Square can be a pain during peak hours so be advised. It's next to Pacific Super so watch out for grocery carts.

Yelp
I purchased a birthday cake for my friend at this establishment, and I was thoroughly impressed. The cake was delectable, and the customer service was exceptional. I highly recommend it to others in search of quality desserts.

Jojie S.

Yelp
This place always screws up your order EVERYTIME WITHOUT FAIL!!! I was very specific on the fresh lumpia in that i don't want garlic and separate the sauce. Is that really really hard to do
