Phoenix’s 10 Best Breweries - Eater Phoenix

"Old Town Scottsdale’s Goldwater Brewing recently opened a second spot in east Mesa. Still, the most thrilling facet of Goldwater remains in its flagship location: an underground repurposed bunker where batches of beer age and small parties can drink (or could before the pandemic). Imagine a happy dungeon of barrel-aged experimentation. Goldwater, for instance, has divided the same imperial stout into four different kinds of barrels, highlighting the different nuances different woods can bring. Goldwater might be best known for its brown ale, Machine Gun Teddy, but Desert Rose, a cactus kolsch, is another favorite." - Chris Malloy

Google
The open-space concept at Goldwater Brewing initially caught our attention, but once we visited, we became obsessed with the incredible selection of beers, the extremely friendly staff, and the great music.

Google
Tried their Birthday Suit west coast and High Five IPAs and they are amazing. Nice place to have some beers. They don't have a kitchen but allow us to bring food or buy elsewhere and eat inside.

Google
In town to see Brewers-Diamondbacks (Brewers won!). Friendly, attentive service. Loved the Hop Chowda New England IPA. Made a 2nd visit and same good experience. When too hot for outdoor seating it can fill up quickly. 4.5 stars.

Great place! The beertender was friendly and I enjoyed the prickly pear Kolsch-style on their patio on a cool evening.

Goldwater Brewing Co offers a variety of beers. If you enjoy beer, you can’t go wrong visiting this joint.

Google
If you're looking for great beer around Scottsdale this is a great place to start. Really nice variety of styles and most of what I had was really on point. Some beers are pouring straight off the tank which is always nice. Staff are friendly and helpful. It's a fairly small indoor area but there is outdoor seating as well. Nice selection of canned to go beer, and they do crowlers of anything on tap. Well worth the visit!

Google
This place is small and quaint but super cool to share good vibes in. Highly recommend the Hop Chowda as it is very popular and the bar tender let me know. We stopped by real quick but overall would return!!

Google
Had a flight while visiting Scottsdale on a solo trip and was pleasantly surprised by the local beer! My favourite was definitely the machine gun teddy - classic brown ale flavour 😍 I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the Sublemonal since I'm usually not a fan of IPA but this wasn't as bitter and the lemon made it quite refreshing! Enjoyed the humour by the water station 🤭

Yelp
I visit here each time we are in Arizona when in town from NY. Today i tried a flight. Desert rose, dive bomb, hefweizen, machine gun teddy. A variety of flavors. Im always happy here. I got a crawler of machine gun teddy to take home. Service is top notch. The bartenders Bulat and Nathan remembered us from a year ago and we had a nice chat. Its casual and hipster inside and very welcoming. Will be back next summer!

Yelp
I'm from Cali and hands down good beer good vibe on a Sunday afternoon. The vibe was excellent, Dodger game on and extra special thanks too Adam for keeping it cold.

Yelp
I think I've reviewed Goldwater in the past but Yelp is giving me the option to post a review so I'll go with it. I love this brewery. Been coming here for a few years and it's fun to see what new styles they have on tap. The beer here is absolutely delicious. It's a small tasting room in the main area and there's a nice outdoor area when the weather isn't 110+. This place is a legit local treasure. I enjoy myself whenever I'm here. I would be surprised if I didn't already Yelp this, so if it's an update I still love it.

Yelp
Came here on a little brewery tour of Scottsdale. They offered flights and pints and had seating both indoors and on the outdoor patio. Indoor seating was mostly bar seating with a few hightops too. We had a group of 5 and a dog, so we opted for the outdoor patio. Since I don't like lighter style beers, only a couple of the beers spoke to me and I went with a pint of the hazy. A pint of hazy on a brewery tour can be a lot, but I did really enjoy the first half of my beer. Everyone else in the group enjoyed what they got and some even went back for a second beer. Would check this spot out again in the future and maybe opt for the tasters.

Yelp
We looked up this place before we came and saw they don't serve food, so we walked in with a bag of burgers and fries. They allow you to bring in any food you want. This place is just adorable. You can see these big vats, I guess you call them, behind the bar where the beer is doing whatever beer does. This is all hand made beer and I have no idea if you can get it in a store. The service is so much fun. This is a family owned place and it shows in the way they keep it so clean and wonderful inside and so much fun. They know everything about beer. The service is just fun and the staff is really nice. As I said we brought in food, but my husband was not drinking at all since he was the designated driver, but he ate most of my food--issue, I got tipsy on two beers. I am not a big drinker. But he was full of burgers and happy. The beer we had was great. They have a nice selection of beer. We tried their oatmeal stout which was strong tasting and very good. Their Goldwater beer was my favorite, but my friends loved the Desert Rose. a German style beer and the pilsner, whose name now escapes me. I really did get a tad drunk on an empty stomach and two beers. I am not a party person I guess. But we all had the best time and will be back. But please, get a hot dog maker or something. Some of us are just light weights and have husbands that eat our food. You will love this place.

Yelp
Great beer, with a great selection of beers. It's all local brew. Service is great and knowledgeable . Very relaxed atmosphere. You can buy growlers to go. Plenty of places to sit. They have outdoor seating as well. Sometimes there are food trucks. They don't sell food at the brewery.

Yelp
Great beer. Friendly folks. Cool Logo :-) did not eat. I love a good west coast ipa. This place did not disappoint.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent beer in a local pub like feel. The beer is of serious quality and the space is very comfortable. Caution, it is across the street from a police station so be on your best behavior. If seeking microbrewing excellence look no further, Goldwater is your place.

Yelp
Excellent beer! Missed food truck due to timing but the beer was delicious and bartender friendly and attentive.

Yelp
This is my most local brewery and love it. There staff are awesome and the beers just as awesome too! Pop in here on a fairly regular basis, whether to have a quick brew of their latest releases or to pick up some Hop Chowda, my fave hazy IPA. Need to schedule another visit me thinks!

Yelp
We were in last weekend and had a great time. They had several Star Wars themed beers for May 4th and it was cute. Bartender was friendly and nice to chat with. It was pretty low key on a Saturday afternoon and that was great. Fun place and we'll be back!

Jane F.

Yelp
Best service, Goldwater is the best brewery in the area! Adam is always so helpful and the whole team is amazing!

Brendan R.

Yelp
As a person who is familiar with the Valley brew scene stay away from Goldwater. Many great options for a variety of beers at 1227, the Wandering Tortoise and great breweries like Wren House and Fire and Fury. The person who states he is the brewer at Goldwater and head man is rude and condescending. While I completely understand the liquor license issue between Goldwater and SIP next door this man was gestapo like to his customers if they wandered into "his" patio with a drink from the other establishment. He believes he is polite but both my experience along with the other customers who were a shocked by his behavior told a different story. Go to Wren House where the beer is exceptional and the people serving are wonderful and kind.

Kelsey B.

Yelp
The best brewery around! Great vibe both indoors and outdoors. Always lots of unique/ tasty beers on tap. Staff is 10 out of 10, especially Parker, don't skip it!!

Yelp
I have been to the Scottsdale location a few times, especially after walking our puppy. We like to sit at the patio area and enjoy a beer or two with our puppy next to us. The first time that we were there, they had a pizza food truck. We had the basic margarita pizza and it was all right. It was freshly handmade and paired well with ice-cold beer. But it did not strike me as something I would like to get again next time. The beer we had was great although I wish they had some options for double or triple IPAs. The last time that we visited there, the bartender did mention they were brewing a double IPA. I look forward to going back and trying the new beers. I know there is a Tempe location as well, which has been on my list to check out. I searched their website a few times to see if there will be any food options nearby (like food trucks) but I couldn't find any information. I wish they had a way to notify customers of food choices, like some other breweries who post information on their Instagram or website from time to time.

Yelp
Website and Google say they are open at 1pm during the week but nit the case, they open at 2pm maybe update the website. Good place for a beer
google avatar

Courtney N.

Yelp
Awesome beer! The menu is pretty diverse and you can sample the different options. They also have a wine based margarita. I got the hop chowda- one of my favorite hazys! Also got the birthday suit which was also good. The service is always great- they are very friendly and knowledgeable about the beers. Dogs are able to come into the inside area, and they also have a lot of outdoor seating- including the rooftop. Love coming here!
google avatar

Mike F.

Yelp
Randomly stopped in with my buddy on a Friday night. Got the Hefeweizen and there was a taco truck making awesome-looking food in front. Sadly we had just eaten somewhere else. There was a ton of outdoor tables, but we found a couple spots upstairs. It wasn't stupidly hot in AZ yet so it was a great setup. Nice weather, cold beer! Will be back!

Yelp
I'm a big fan of breweries and this one is great. They have fantastic atmosphere, a casual fun vibe and awesome craft beers. You're going to love it here if you're into breweries. What this place really needs is a brick pizza oven. However they do bring in lots of food trucks.

Yelp
Looking for a great neighborhood brewery? Look no further....Goldwater Brewing Company is the place for you. The beers are great and the selection is outstanding. If you like hazy...they have it! If you like pale ales...they have it! Dark beers are what you are after.....they have you covered!! The staff are fantastic. Big shout out to Abby, Parker and John!

Yelp
When my husband and I are traveling we love to stop into different breweries and grab a sticker for our collection and try a local brew. This brewery didn't have a huge selection or anything, which sometimes that's okay. I got the Dessert Rose beer, it was okay, not my favorite or anything I would specific get again. This brewery had a pretty small seating space inside, which is fine because they had more than enough seating outside in the back! However when we visited it had just got done raining so it was packed inside and all the outdoor seating was super wet. I was snooping around and found a dirty bar rag that we used to manage to wipe down one of the picnic tables. It sure would have been nice if they were able to send someone out to wipe off all those tables for the early afternoon/evening crowd. I bet it wouldn't have been such a cluster inside.

Dianne B.

Yelp
Awesome place. Quiet. Indoor & outdoor seating. You can bring food in &/ir but pizza next door and eat here. Super
google avatar

Jenna S.

Yelp
Really enjoyed their outdoor seating. The inside was a bit small, but the patio is big! Their beer tastes great and the service was good too! You could also order food from the restaurant next door and their pretzel was so good! They brought the food over to us too. We would come back to Goldwater if we were in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
Great place and great beer. We ran into a fellow Michigander while we were there. We had a fun time chewing the fat. The bartender was super friendly and funny. We only planned to come in for one beer and stayed for a few because we were having such a good time. If you find yourself in the area, make sure you stop in and get a beer, but you may end up staying longer.

Yelp
Went here on a Friday when I was staying in corporate housing nearby at The Carter. To taste test the beers, I went with a flight. I enjoyed all of them, especially the Hop Chowdah. I have been wanting to go back since out of all of the Craft Brewery flights I've tried since moving here, this one was probably my fave. Only reason I docked a star was because this is a pretty small area. I know they have a brewery in Mesa as well, and hopefully they'll expand to a bigger spot in Old Town eventually. Also, there was only one TV in the whole bar area and it had some weird channel on. I'm used to seeing ESPN on or something that everyone can enjoy. Hopefully if/when they expand, they can add more TVs as well. All told, really solid craft brewery in the area with beers that are tough to top! Hoping the experience will get an upgrade as they continue to grow.

Yelp
Small brewery on Scottsdale Rd. but don't blink cause you'll likely miss it. Really enjoyed their Hop Chowda IPA and their seasonal Pumpkin Spice Altbier. Staff is super friendly and well schooled. Loved seeing the custom tanks they pour from! Stop in and have a cold one.
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
Friendly beer tenders, great beer, and chill ambiance. Very happy with this place and it's one of the few taprooms in the area. Would definitely go back.
google avatar

Julie D.

Yelp
I am not a beer fan but came with my friends who are. This is a lively place that is not real big and has a mid sized menu. I ordered a sour and was pleased with what I got. Limited on street parking. A good place to stop!
google avatar

Jenna T.

Yelp
Great selection of beers and I love how dog friendly they are. It's nice you can bring your own food or enjoy their food trucks. Colby was my server and she seemed very happy to be there which made for a pleasant experience. I will definitely return.

Yelp
I stopped in last Tuesday evening after a loop hike in Papago Park with my dogs. I was thirsty for a pint of their Desert Rose ale, a beer I tried a few years ago when my local taphouse opened. It's a refreshing and low-alcohol drink that tastes great after a heavy workout, but it's hard to find in my town. It was chilly outside and didn't want to be in the cold. The dogs rested in the car and I was offered a seat at the counter, where immediately I was welcomed by the two bartenders and the hip customers around me. The clientele was very diverse. Two men to my right were chatting in Persian and the man next to me was working on his PhD via his laptop. I ended up staying longer than expected. The service was just so nice! I ended up having their 2017 award-winning brown ale Machine Gun Teddy (which won bronze at the Great American Beer Festival) and took another four-pack of their Hop Chowda IPA home. The outdoor patio is spacious. I will definitely come back when I travel through next summer.
google avatar

Chad P.

Yelp
I think it's the best red ale on the west coast and Justin was a great bartender - and can't beat Phoenix in the early spring
google avatar

Amira J.

Yelp
Solid Brewery. Really enjoyed the flights. Their weren't a lot of options to choose from but I really enjoyed each IPA that I tried. The service was good as well. Ambiance is a little crowded on the inside but the rooftop gives nice views. Definitely would recommend coming here on a hot sunny day to enjoy the rooftop vibes.
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I walked here after dinner. He loves beer and I like cider so we thought it would be the perfect place to check out! My husband got an IPA, their cider was passionfruit guava mango, some of my fave flavors. We both really enjoyed our drinks! We hadn't been before so didn't realize we had to go up to order but luckily a kind bartender helped us out! This was a cool little place and I'd totally come back to try whatever hard seltzer they have! Or see what their next seasonal cider is!

Yelp
GOLDWATER brewery is definitely one of my favorite breweries here in AZ. From their delicious hoppy IPAs to the crisp yet sour Sours and Gozes. They have two locations one in Scottsdale and one in Mesa both have amazing patios and the customer service is second to none. Keep up the great work @goldwaterbrewingco #drinklocal #drinkaz #AzCraftBeer #AzBrew #localeats #azgrub #eatlocalaz #localaz #azfoodies #azfood #azfoodblogger #foodinfluencer IG @charlies_culinary_chronicals

Yelp
Visited Arizona for the first time with my boyfriend, and since we've grown to become beer fanatics, we had to find a brewery before we left. Goldwater caught our attention with their "Go Go Sour Rangers" options on their tap list, and we were very happy with our choice. Fairly small brewery, with bar seating and some high tables inside. They also have an outdoor seating area. There's free popcorn and merch displayed as well. Staff was very friendly, even coming up to us to greet us in and ask if it was our first time visiting. As said before, we were intrigued by their GoGo Sour Rangers, and got the two that were available. I personally liked the Black Ranger edition (Blackberry, blueberry, black currant) over the Green Ranger Edition (Blood Orange, Tangerine, Lemon Lime Kool Aid), but both were enjoyable. Everything is nice and neat, and they're dog friendly as well! Would definitely come back if we visit Arizona again.

Yelp
First time here! Football season has commenced, which is the reason I am here in AZ! Of course as a tourist I wanted to try to experience everything cool and local. Pun intended, cool everything because this heat is brutal (106 degrees) stopped here for some local brews and this place is awesome! Very chill vibe, good service and the beer was good Ps. They don't serve food FYI
google avatar

Taylor F.

Yelp
Best beer in Scottsdale! Huge outdoor patio and very walkable from old town. Bartenders are knowledgeable based on your palette and friendly. Great spot for an after work beer.
google avatar

Gillian D.

Yelp
Little brewery in old town Scottsdale - super cute for the beer lovers in your group. The bar staff was incredibly friendly, and super knowledgeable about all of their brews. Highly recommend getting the flight, because every beer was truly awesome.

Yelp
We stopped in yesterday afternoon for a little beer tasting and were delighted to be introduced to Machine Gun Teddy. I fell in love with the t-shirt and the staff told our group about the history behind the shirt (pays tribute to the mascot that used to adorn the building (dating back to the 70's). I bought the shirt. :) We tried a medley of beers: Desert Rose (Kolsch), Chowda IPA, and Mosaic Hop Chowda. Bummed that we forgot to try the Machine Gun Teddy (American Nut Brown Ale). What a chillax, well air conditioned, nicely appointed and civilized place to go for craft beer in Old Town Scottsdale. We'll be back Teddy!
google avatar

Heather M.

Yelp
Good beer selection and friendly staff. Chill and relaxing environment. First time here and will be back. Desert rose was my favorite

Leila R.

Yelp
Enjoyed my visit here on a busy, late Thursday afternoon. The place was packed, but I was able to snag a place at the bar once a group of beer-sippers decided to vacate. It was much smaller inside than the outside suggests, but they have a lot of fun, diverse beer options and the barstaff were super friendly and accommodating. I had a decent beer flight of 5 beers from the full beer menu offerings. My only gripe was the $15 price tag for the beer flight. I'm used to the $8-12 range, max as $3 for a taster pour seems a bit steep imho. But, that being said, every beer I had was good w/a couple being fantastic. Would definitely recommend popping in and checking them out. They are also dog-friendly, so if you are a dog-person you will love the rando-pup interaction at the bar as well as the patio.
google avatar

Ryan S.

Yelp
Moving to the area in a week and this will be my #1 spot for awhile or longer lol Delicious sours, (others beers are great too say my friends) staff and patrons are all super cool and easy to have fun conversations with. Go Go Sour Ranger is DELICIOUS. You need to come check this place out!
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty sweet spot to grab a beer in Old Town Scottsdale. Our group stopped by for a brewsky after a pretty hefty dinner nearby, and went ham on Goldwater's Fall menu! I ordered the AU Pale Ale for my first drink and wasn't a fan. After a few tastings Goldwater quickly redeemed themselves with the Oats Magoats Oatmeal Stout and the Desert Rose Cactus Ale! Both were incredibly tasty and have me craving a future trip to Scottsdale. The atmosphere is industrial and open with a full view of their brewing tanks, and an ever-changing menu of new offerings. There was plenty of seating both at the bar and throughout the space for larger groups. They also had a cooler with canned wines, which was a nice touch for members of our party that weren't beer drinkers!

Matt E.

Yelp
Beer is ok, not a great place. Staff was we'll say not very friendly. Lots of options in the area I would pick somewhere else
google avatar

Jared S.

Yelp
Me and one of my best friends checked this place out after finding it on Yelp! We just had a massive meal right before arriving but we still wanted to try everything. Naturally, we ordered a flight to get the best of everything. You're given a checklist and indicated which of their many beers you'd like to include and the bartender was a huge help discerning which beers matched our preferences. The coolest thing about the place was that fact that you can see their machinery behind the bar. While I'm more of a liquor person these days than beer, I will definitely be back the next time I'm in the area.

Donna L.

Yelp
A great place to hang out and have a beer. Outdoor seating. A food truck was available when we were there
google avatar

Derrik B.

Yelp
Smaller taproom but a great one nonetheless! About 8 or so rotating drafts with bar seating and table tops for groups. You're sitting basically in part of the brewing room which makes it a bit unique. Friendly service and centrally located it's a must visit. The beer was great, we sampled three brews and were impressed with each one! Two IPAs and a sour left me impressed with a spot I had plenty of recommendations to try.
google avatar

Bridget B.

Yelp
Stopped for a flight after a long hike while visiting Arizona. Beer was great and the bartender was super friendly! My sister and I sat outside and they turned the heater on for us without any complaint. Our bartender gave us lots of recommendations for good hikes and other fun places to eat/check out. Such a fun atmosphere and good service!
