Gorditas La Tia Susy Review - McKinley Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Peep through the big windows of this small McKinley Park Mexican spot and you’ll likely see people snacking on their tasty namesake gorditas while sneaking glances at the single wall-mounted TV. But the best reason to grab one of the few tables at Gorditas La Tia Susy is their durango-style burritos: svelte tortilla roll-ups with a great charred exterior. Individually, they’re the perfect size for a snack, but we like to make a whole meal out of two or three—which is also the best way to sample a few of their 23 delicious fillings. Make sure to also try some of their excellent housemade drinks like horchata that comes in a giant glass mug or their citrusy cafe de olla if you need a pick-me-up after loading up on burritos. Food Rundown photo credit: John Ringor Duranguenses Thick flour tortillas are the stars of these durango-style burritos. They have an excellent bite, which starts off with a crispy griddled exterior and ends with a light springiness as you get towards the center of refried beans and your filling of choice. It doesn’t matter which of the 23 equally tasty fillings you get, but our favorites are the chicharron verde, chorizo con papas, and guisado rojo with juicy chunks of pork. Gordita The namesake masa pockets are thin, light, and a good option if you want something that isn’t as dense as their durango burritos. photo credit: John Ringor Burrito Though this $10 burrito is a great deal and packed like a carry-on you’re taking on a two-week vacation, we prefer the durango-style ones. It’s loosely wrapped and falls apart easily which makes it tricky to eat, and the rice, sour cream, and vegetables actually distract from the great flavors of the meat fillings." - John Ringor

I ordered the green chilaquiles with scrambled eggs, but the eggs were more like extra-hard fried eggs—not quite what I expected. The green salsa had good flavor, and the dish was garnished with sour cream and cheese, though very lightly. I also had two gorditas—one with requesón and one with papas con chorizo. The gorditas were a nice size and thin, but they had very little filling, which made them underwhelming. My husband ordered a couple of quesadillas: one with chicharrón prensado (which he added nopales to) and another with deshebrada. The quesadillas were large, but the tortillas were too thick and, like the gorditas, didn’t have much filling. Overall, the flavors were decent, but both the chilaquiles and the antojitos lacked proper execution and generosity in the fillings.

Google
I recommend their authentic durango style burritos, especially the ones with asado, deshabrada and nopale with queso. They use quality ingredients and they have a chef who knows his job well. Our waiter was very attentive and kind. It was our first time and we really liked the place.

Google
Absolutely love the food here! It’s a very cozy restaurant and a nice place to stop by on a cold day to get some atole de nuez. They have the Mexican basics (like tortas, tacos, and gorditas). I love the decor because it feels a little like Mexico. The people are kind and very attentive. I highly recommend taking your time drinking the atole since it’s hot af

Kindest , sweetest ladies at the front. Food super good.. as mid kids said, it was, “bussin”

Google
Ok food. Fries came under cooked even though we asked for WELL DONE hard fries. Asada meat a little tough it’s ok. Pork in salsa not good at all. The salsa itself is too watered down. You’ll find better at a Cermak produce. The only thing that was actually good was the gordita with chorizo and potato. I would rate this place a five out of 10. I will not be returning here! The rice is OK the beans have no taste.

Google
We tried to order takeout but we could not call in the order, and their online ordering system was down. We were really looking forward to it since the menu looked great. Mainly reviewing to help other users and inform the business owners. I would happily change my review if they fix their ordering system.

NAPOLES was amazing!!! $3.99 for each one and I was so satisfied ❤️ The customer service was perfect. Horchata was delicious

Google
Delicious food, priced just right, and excellent service. I had the flour gordita with red sauce and corn gordita with green sauce, both very good. Also had tacos asada, delicious.

Yelp
I have only been here once before, and so far I remember it quite the same. I frequent a lot of Mexican restaurants, and this is the only one that has a Jarrito (I believe that's what it's called) filled with water. The jarrito keeps the water cold, and it's a self serve too. I almost love it just for that fact alone. Very nice staff and clean tables and restaurant overall. I've been back a few times now, and I'm sure I'll be back

Yelp
Found this spot one Saturday morning and had a great breakfast! The waitress was so nice and personable. We started with chamomile tea and limonada. For food we ordered the desayuno especial and desayuno sarmiento. The food was well seasoned and really yummy. Both came with tortillas that are made in house!! There were lots of tables and I loved the music they were playing. Will definitely return when in the area again.

Yelp
Disappointed. These are NOT gorditas! They are not supposed to be flabby. Also, you're supposed to add garnish which was not available. The meats were meh, nothing to brag about. It's a lame attempt.
google avatar

Yelp
The tacos were good and tender. I tried a breakfast sandwich just for the heck of it and it was what it was. Nothing exciting about it but it was tasty. The only thing I didn't like was the parking. No street parking and there is a small lot across the street.

Yelp
Nice change from typical Norteño Mexican cuisine (Durango style). Plates are a bit smaller than expected but quite affordable so allows for a variety of items and tastes during a meal, and the handmade tortillas are to die for as are the salsas. They're BYOB and the liquor store across the street allows for parking so pick up your favorite beverage and be prepared to have truly a truly authentic Mexican food experience at a great value. Very friendly and down to earth service as well. The chicharron prensado is the bomb!

Yelp
This place is really very clean and has great food in a cozy McKinley park area. This was a take out order where it met all expectations from my family members. The person that took my order Jennifer was so kind and professional. I would most definitely recommend Gorditas de Tia Suzy!

Yelp
not sure if it's because I have a mild hangover but this was freaking delicious. I ordered the quesabirria and consomé And this flour tortilla rolled with bean and cheese. Look stop hesitating and order

Yelp
In Chicago for riot fest from Fort Worth, TX. This was by far the best meal we've enjoyed in the four days we've been here. Comfort food at it's best. Cozy, clean and comfortable dining area. Staff were friendly, smiling and attentive. Best corn tortillas I've eaten in my 52 years of eating corn tortillas almost daily.

Yelp
Centanario Dinner and 2 barbacoa tacos. Food tasted good. Portion size could have been more. Did include sour cream I ordered but small size like dipping nuggets. Delivery was good as well. I'd order again but only with discount due to fact there's a lot of choices in my area. But make the portion size bigger and include napkins will order more frequently

Yelp
The chilaquiles here are incredible. The tortillas were crunchy and not soggy, which sometimes is a problem with the sauce. But it isn't here. The I tried both the green and red sauces--both great choices. You can add a meat of your choice for an extra $2.50, but it doesn't need it. The restaurant is relatively small, but it doesn't seem to get TOO busy. We were able to be seated right away on a Sunday around noon. I can't wait to go back and try everything else. They accept cards.

Yelp
Worst place I've ever been to , everything is water down , the green sauce is so water down one could make soup out of it, the tamarind water barely has any color or taste to it it's more like tap water with sugar, the service has a lot to ask for asked for coffee and had to ask for cream and after that they couldn't even provide a spoon to stir it with let's not forget to mention it was at room temperature, at no moment was any silverware offered nor provided, the ambiance wasn't any better especially watching the server battle with her long nails every time she tried to do something, wish I could deduct stars instead of giving them, I don't recommend this place to anyone, horrible food and way over priced, BEWARE STAY AWAY!!!!

Yelp
I loved this place, and definitely want to go back to eat more of their gorditas (and other things on their menu, honestly). When deciding where to meet for lunch, I floated a couple of places I'd had bookmarked to my friend, but I'm really happy she chose this place. It's small and intimate, and I love how the waitstaff switches between Spanish and English. The waitress took my drink order in Spanish and then switched to English to accommodate my non-Spanish speaking friend, and she did it seamlessly. The people working there were friendly, especially since my friend was 20-30 minutes late, and I took up a 4-person table waiting for her. I didn't feel particularly rushed, and that was really nice. Even without the stellar service and the cutest water jugs, the food was delicious. I got a guava atole to drink, which was so yummy. It had sweet, guava flavors without being too sweet. It's a hot drink, so perfect for if you want to warm yourself up. I also was excited because I hadn't had atole since I was in Mexico, and even though they have horchata and I love it, I wanted to have some atole. On to the gorditas - so many options, and I wish I had come hungrier so I could try more gorditas. I ended up getting the chile pasado con carne as well as the chorizo con papas (chorizo/sausage with potatoes). Both were great - chorizo was probably a little more my favorite but I am a sucker for chorizo. I forgot what my friend got but she really liked hers as well. I'll definitely be back here, especially since this isn't too far from me.

Yelp
Best Mexican food ever! Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Staff is also always very friendly. I've recommended this place to all my friends and they all love it

Yelp
Food was really good. It hit my craving right on the nose. Their chips and salsa for the table was spicy but super addicting. I had the veggie burrito and my partner had the breakfast plate. Will be returning

Yelp
The gorditas and burrito (estilo durango) were so good! I have chicharon prensado and desebrado. They got our food out so fast. Wish i lived closer so i can come more oftwn..

Yelp
Food is fantastic, don't expect large amount but the flavor is All there. Gorditas, Sopes, Huaraches, tortillas ALL made from scratch & fresh. Pretty authentic for me. The café de olla is delish. Gordita de chicharrón prensado is ufff no doubt my favorite. Absolutely a delicious place to come for an authentic Mexican style breakfast.

Yelp
The food is delicious however their packaging is horrible and not to mention my order was incomplete.

Yelp
I ordered pick up and they told me 20 mins, 40 mins later and here I am still there. Then I got my food. I then thought it would be a good idea to tell them not to tell people it's going to be a 20 minute wait when it's good to be longer. The waitress then proceeds to say " let me show you where you can make that complaint". She opens the front door and tells me to leave. I'm just happy I don't like like that ugly ass waitress. They didn't even give me my full order. Overall trash. Food wasn't even good.

Yelp
Upon Entrance Greeted and felt welcome. I needed a booth with a charger and they accomadated. Zyra & Vivian are amazing employees.very helpful and knowledgeable about the menue and ingredients. The homemade red salsa past they bring is to die for as well as your regular red and green salsa was brought to eat the chips. I ordered the Pollo Taco,Asada taco,Deshebrda Durango & Finally The Asada Duranguenses. Great assortment of menue options from single eats to full dinners. The food was made to order meaning tasted like all was just prepped for me only, but judging from the onslaught of customers we all feel special. Definetly try this place. #NextTimeGordita

Yelp
Great little place we visited before heading to the airport. Everything was tasty and freshly prepared. The server was very knowledgeable and clearly very proud of the food. He made the experience over the top. Go here and fill your belly fill of gorditas and tacos. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Adam K.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of their al pastor tacos. Perhaps too much. This is a friendly little place. The chorizo and egg breakfast special is a winner. I have it at least once a week. In addition they do catering. The tacos I had for my party were a big hit.

John T.

Yelp
Quesabirria tacos were delicious!! Horchata was so creamy and yummy! My boyfriend and I enjoyed their salsas and gordita de asada! Didn't really like their picadillo but that's ok everything else was very good. Also, try their "requeson" appetizer, its like a cheese dip and its very good! Server was very nice as well and best of all, the bathrooms were clean yay! We will be coming back!
google avatar

Maggie O.

Yelp
My family and I have eaten here plenty of times and we have enjoyed their meals every time. They are known for their gorditas which are basically two thick tortillas with your choice of filling. I really like their rajas and anything with their papas. My husband loves their steak torta. Service is wonderful and you are well-attended. You can expect to spend little to nothing for their generous portions - for 2 people, you will spend about ~$20 and will be full! Food suggestions: try any of their gorditas, my fav. being rajas Caution: their orange salsa, which is provided with the chips, is EXTREMELY spicy if you don't enjoy the heat. For those that like spicy food, you will def. want an horchata to help while your mouth is on fire.

Yelp
FIRE FOOD, you will not regret. Service was amazing, food was fast, and everything was seasoned to perfection.
google avatar

Diana G.

Yelp
We've been back quite a bit. Nothing fancy in there, but the food is pretty good. I really like their guacamole. Gorditas, tortas, burritos and huaraches are all good. Some of the pricing on this items are tad high. Like, my guy got the shrimp special and it was $8.99, but the chile rellenos was $10.99.
google avatar

Len L.

Yelp
The food here is impeccable. Plenty of protein to choose from and I ended up trying a few such as steak taco's, gorditas and tortas. Awesome! The service is mediocre for less than 10 tables. The odd thing was we asked for a take-out menu and I saw that they had plenty but they told us that we could not have one but the menu is online. Either way, you can't go wrong here. Prices were bit high for the area but for the flavor, well worth the trip.
google avatar

Yelp
This place right here has the best burritos in the world. It's perfect down to the cheese actually being melted. The chilaquiles are super good my favorite breakfast dish there. It's in my neighborhood so it's always great to go. They are BYOD so enjoy your nice tacos with that beer. Super friendly staff I love the ladies there. Always so nice. If you don't like your food with out a problem they take care of you and don't make you feel like your doing the most. They always have specials too. Love this place and their food. It's a great place to take parents out for breakfast too. I took mine and they enjoyed everything.
google avatar

Alyssa T.

Yelp
Very impressed with the food I ordered here from Uber eats! I ordered off of the "breakfast happy hour" menu with discounted prices. I anticipated a smaller size or just eggs with chorizo but it was accompanied with heaping sides of potatoes, rice, beans, and incredibly hot fresh tortillas! This was a lovely surprise! I'll definitely order again next time in in town!
google avatar

Neal H.

Yelp
We had a party of 10, including kids (ages 9-16). Nobody ordered the same dish, but every plate was empty at the end with full, smiling diners. The atmosphere was nice and service was polite and efficient. Go get some tasty Mexican food!

Jason R.

Yelp
Seriously the best, most flavorful sopes I've ever had! Service was amicable and the prices were reasonable! I look forward to swinging by with my family!

Yelp
Have been eating here a couple times. The Rice and beans tasted old. My Asada burrito was decent not great. My Asada torta was very good. Nice and full.

Yelp
Wow. What a special place. I love you Tia Susy! My family and I literally stumbled upon Tia Susy's while driving in the neighborhood last Sunday and it was the most pleasant surprise. The young lady at the register gave us better service than all of the fancy Randolph street restaurants combined! I kid you not, she told us about the different specials they offer during the week, welcomed us to her family business and said she can't wait for us to come back! There's been times where I've eaten at these "hip" logan square and randolph street type restaurants multiple days in one week and I see the same employees day after day and NO ONE welcomes me back or even pretends to remember me. Which is truly a shame. Obviously my family and I ordered gorditas (since its in the restaurant's name), chilaquiles, chille rellenos, a breakfast platter and quesadillas. We were truly blown away. All of the food, including the tortillas were made right on the spot. It was incredible, the tortillas were so fluffy and warm - I've never enjoyed such fresh, homemade tortillas before. I will definitely be returning to La Tia Susy!
google avatar

Yelp
WARNING: CASH ONLY! The people who work here are so nice! I walked in with my sister one day and we wanted to try EVERYTHING on the menu. We got rajas con queso, asada, and al pastor. The gorditas were DELICIOUS! Even got a side of their habanero sauce. Strongly recommend this place!
google avatar

Zuri D.

Yelp
The best gorditas y "DE HARINA" (flour) Carne desherba and Chile pasado con requeson are my favorite! And El Menudo just wow I go one or two times per week or just when I miss my moms food! The service is excellent... There's just nothing bad from Gorditas La Tia Susy And now they have agua de sandia one of my favorites, I love going there!
google avatar

FrancoKristin G.

Yelp
Delicious food overall despite the guacamole being a bit bland for wife who loves guacamole and is non Hispanic. She loved the chicken burrito as did our 3 year old. The gorditas were amazing as well as the tacos! I would definitely return and order the various tastings! Looks like we found our new local taco joint! Thank you Gorditas LaTia Susy! Gracias por todo! Recommend this place for your next casual eat in or grab and go!
google avatar

Tone L.

Yelp
$2 TACO TUESDAY!! Good sized tacos, delicious flavor. Conveniently located down the street from my house and it's BYOB. What more can you ask for when looking for some delicious tacos. Also, try the menudo on the weekends. I like that they add hominy to their menudo, not a lot of places serve it this way. Homemade tortillas come with your menudo and the price is right.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
The food is sooooooooo GOOD! Great service, very friendly, not expensive. They were even helpful enough to roll my stuffed full bellied self out the door..... Check it out!
google avatar

Yelp
This is authentic Mexican food! The Gorditas and the Deshebrada are excellent! A must if you enjoy Mexican food. No alcohol !
google avatar

Yelp
Been wanting to try to this place since it opened up awhile ago, and finally did. The food is good, ordered some Gorditas of beans and cheese, asada and red sauce potatoes. The stuffing was flavorful and made fresh. The coffee had a nice almost spiced taste that is typically found in Mexican coffee which gives it a very distinct taste. The service was ok. Waitress was attentive and checked up every once and awhile. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place and plan on coming back soon.
google avatar

Hoy M.

Yelp
Cozy little Mexican joint. There has been many restaurants at this location over the years... I hope this one stays! The restaurant is family owned and operated. The family truly care about the food that is coming out and the service is amazing! Get the burrito (not the American one)!

Ana K.

Yelp
One of the best Gorditas and sopes I've had in my area. First time trying them from this place.
google avatar

Buddha E.

Yelp
good flavor but a bit skimpy on the meat proportion limited parking kind of dated dining area better off taking food to go
google avatar

Cindy S.

Yelp
Amazing authentic food we loved this place!!! Definitely worth the drive from the suburbs
google avatar

Paola G.

Yelp
I order the taco dinner of asada and a requesón y rajas gordita. It was the best taco dinner I've tried. Everything had really good flavor even the salsa roja and the horchata. Definitely coming again.

Yelp
I recently moved here, and haven't had a chance to really search Chicago for all its tasty restaurants yet. But I found Gorditas La Tia Susy and it was fantastic. I love the no frills decor, their friendly service, and the delicious food. I had two of their Duranguense Burritos, Asada and Deshebrada. Unlike American style burritos, they do not have lettuce, cheese, sour cream or Pico de Gallo. It's just beans, mayo and avocado. Can't wait to get back there and try everything else.

Sal H.

Yelp
The location on 51 and western no sirve it sucks! Their costumer service is horrible and they spend more time texting on the phone than actually take orders. I ordered a coffee and I've been sitting there for 20 minutes and nothing so I waved at the mesera and I told her I ordered a coffee and it's still not here and she said si está bien like no give me my coffee but yeah service there sucks they need more training
google avatar

Yelp
This place is FANTASTIC. Great food and great service. I came in about 45 minutes before close, but the waitstaff was super friendly and attentive. They started us off with chips and a spicy housemade dip that was fantastic. Super super spicy, but also had a great flavor. I'm vegetarian, and I was pleased by how many options they had. I got the bean and cheese gordita and the pepper and cheese gordita on flour tortillas. The tortillas were super fresh, and they both tasted delicious. My partner got the pastor torta and said it was great. We also got horchata, which was among some of the best I've had in Chicago, and the guacamole, which was made fresh and had a great flavor. This place deserves your visit. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Super great food we ordered delivery, trying different places in the area. Pastor was amazing literally perfect! Horchata was really good. Definitely going to try this place again.
