Gorditas La Tia Susy - Review - McKinley Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Peep through the big windows of this small McKinley Park Mexican spot and you’ll likely see people snacking on their tasty namesake gorditas while sneaking glances at the single wall-mounted TV. But the best reason to grab one of the few tables at Gorditas La Tia Susy is their durango-style burritos: svelte tortilla roll-ups with a great charred exterior. Individually, they’re the perfect size for a snack, but we like to make a whole meal out of two or three—which is also the best way to sample a few of their 23 delicious fillings. Make sure to also try some of their excellent housemade drinks like horchata that comes in a giant glass mug or their citrusy cafe de olla if you need a pick-me-up after loading up on burritos. Food Rundown Duranguenses Thick flour tortillas are the stars of these durango-style burritos. They have an excellent bite, which starts off with a crispy griddled exterior and ends with a light springiness as you get towards the center of refried beans and your filling of choice. It doesn’t matter which of the 23 equally tasty fillings you get, but our favorites are the chicharron verde, chorizo con papas, and guisado rojo with juicy chunks of pork. photo credit: John Ringor Gordita The namesake masa pockets are thin, light, and a good option if you want something that isn’t as dense as their durango burritos. Burrito Though this $10 burrito is a great deal and packed like a carry-on you’re taking on a two-week vacation, we prefer the durango-style ones. It’s loosely wrapped and falls apart easily which makes it tricky to eat, and the rice, sour cream, and vegetables actually distract from the great flavors of the meat fillings. photo credit: John Ringor" - John Ringor
