Someone please explain to me how Gottino can be utterly devoid of patrons on a leisurely Sunday morning for brunch... whilst Elephant and Castle, just steps away, has throngs of people waiting to even get in the door. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
I don't know what Elephant and Castle is serving up, nor am I terribly inclined to find out. My past experience with Elephant and Castle is a tube stop in a dodgy neighborhood that I considered flyover country via public bus in London. This particular restaurant must be amazing to draw a crowd like that when delightful Italian bites are within line of sight.
None of the dishes we ordered at Gottino could be considered anything less than tasty. But the real standouts to me were the crostini. Any of them. All of them. Take perfectly crusty bread, generously heap each slice with mounds of mouthwatering toppings, then splash some extra olive oil on for good measure. That's pretty much all you need to know. Although I expect they're meant to be light bites, it's stunningly easy to fill up on these morsels of savory satisfaction.
Also, much like what I experienced in Italy (and pretty much all of Europe), they do coffee to-order with an espresso machine. If they have a drip, I didn't spot it. Which is just fine by me for a serviceable mug of joe. For coffee aficionados, you're going to want to look elsewhere. Or consider it an excuse to drink wine before noon.
So, if anyone has the skinny on whatever they're dealing out of E&C, fill me in. In the meanwhile, I can't complain a whit that Gottino offers a peaceful and delicious start to a weekend morning, no wait required!
