"Grab a boxed lunch at Gourmet, located on 23rd Street just off Wentworth. A local gem where the portions are generous and the menu is expansive, my recommendation is the steamed chicken with green onion sauce or the fried chicken." - Jack X. Li

Google
Customer need to see this! I have ordered food here couple of times already, and those were quite nice. However! This time was ridiculous. The place is not honest and they lie about the prices. I ordered three bbq meat on rice plate with EXTRA LARGE that cost extra money, and they gave me meat with mostly bones (except the BBQ pork)! Before ordering, I left a note saying that I do not want over left pieces and overnight food (cause they do). Yet, they still give me bones and chicken’s NECK! I went to talk with the customer service and provided a lot of times the proofs and pics but they still do not admit it saying that it was the chicken’s THIGHS’ part (so funny). Most importantly, this EXTRA LARGE meat over rice is the SAME amount compared to the regular size that I ordered in the past, just food and rice packed separately. See the pics I uploaded? WHO say this is chicken’s thighs? At the beginning I just wanted them to give me back the extra money I spent on this LARGE order which definitely not worth it, but they kept saying this is the size and that they gave me good meat parts. I can’t accept it. Unbelievable. Don’t go to this dishonest store! They are getting extra money from you! I liked here but I won’t order here next time. Their dishonest is the main issue.

Google
10/10 on the food here. The crispy pork is beyond good, and I love the giant whole wings. I’ve tried a few other dishes here and nothing has disappointed. Service is always friendly and quick. The only knock on this place is the ambiance or lack there of. Not the most inviting outside or inside, but grab your food to go and you will be a happy camper. Enjoy!

Jane Yu

Google
Their 肠粉 is so so so delicious (picture 1 and 2). They don’t look amazing, but they taste so so so amazing! Fried dough(油条)is not recommended. Fried bun and fried dumplings are good! Sesame am ball is also good!

Google
This is a hidden gem in the neighborhood for over 35 years. It's not a place for fine dine and wine. You can dine in which is self serves. They are known for ginger scallion chicken over rice, spare rib over rice, salt and pepper pork chop, and recently I have been ordering the Mongolian beef over rice.

Han Stw

Google
Cheap affordable place to grab food in Chinatown. Stopped by for lunch and ordered fish fillet with tofu and white rice. The food itself was decent and it was cooked fresh. The menu prices were also affordable. There is a self order machine that you can use to order. I was a bit surprised that they have a line for “tax and others” on my receipt. while tax is normal— I am not sure what “others” means? Maybe a fee for using the self order machine? Maybe inflation price adjustment? Dine in is allowed, and there are seatings inside.

Shannon Sarkisian

Google
Cheap eats, but it definitely feels like it. I ordered three things and the best one was the Mongolian beef. The other two dishes, sesame chicken and the bbq pork definitely left things to be desired. Fruit flies came out of the soy sauce and the place seemed dirty.

Bill Altmayer

Google
The best dim sum dumplings in Chinatown! Superior quality and price. Cozy dining atmosphere with multiple different vendors. But this lady’s got them all beat.

Rui Zhong

Google
Decent food at affordable prices. Duck was decent. Dim sum was good. There’s a self ordering machine which is helpful for English speakers. ordering is done at the counter. I would not wholly trust the food quality, but it’s quick affordable food that I wouldn’t mind ordering occasional take out or dining in.

Yelp
This place has been in Chinatown forever and it's still my favorite for salted pepper pork chop over rice! I've tried ordering it from other restaurants, but they never hit the spot like this. It's not new or modern, so folks looking for a trendy Chinese restaurant won't find their IG-worthy post here. BUT you will find good food, quick service, and a good bang for your buck. It's small, but there is some seating available indoors. What I get: Salt and Pepper Pork Chop over Rice - It's like the perfect little crispy bite that gives way to juicy tenderness inside. And with thinly sliced jalapeños, there's just a hint of a kick to add that extra addictive flavor. Portion is huge. For $8 it's so good. It used to come with a soup too, but that was probably years and years ago now.

Peter P.

Yelp
One of the last Chinatown take outs from the 80's. This is a total locals joint. Not much in the area of ambiance. I don't think that I've eaten inside in 40 years. Nonetheless, we get take out from here 2-3 times a month or more. They open pretty early but close around 7:30-8:00. I'd say consistent food quality is the key here. Or family favorites, fried chicken wings with salt and peppers white chicken with onion gravy over rice, minced beef and rice, chicken and peppers in black bean sauce over rice noodles. The yang chow fried rice and curry chicken over rice. Expect $50-$60 for family of four with at least one meal of leftovers!

Joshua L.

Yelp
The food I got was the sour veggies and beef my cousin got the barbecue triple platter, the atmosphere of the place hasn't changed since I was 6 years old, albeit emptier than before the food quality has changed a lot my two lunch boxes came out to be 24.32 I don't know if prices raised with quality but I can tell I'm not coming back here for a long time

Christine L.

Yelp
Looking for inexpensive Chinese carryout? You've found the right place! Gourmet Food has so many options. In addition to their many rice boxes they also have some fried foods and Chinese bbq pork and roast duck. I personally like the fish and corn dish, and one neat thing about this place is that (for an additional charge) you can get your rice box over fried rice noodles instead. If you want a quick, inexpensive, carryout meal this is the place to go.

Jessica M.

Yelp
I've been sporadically coming to Gourmet all throughout my childhood and adulthood. They really haven't changed much. They're still that hole in the wall with a few sticky tables for anybody who doesn't mind the super authentic experience and a huge variety of items on their menu. Instead of downsizing and specializing in a few items, I think they've actually added to the long list over the years. Some items would really take you by surprise though, and it's in a good way. Some of my recurring to-order items are their rice boxes, chow mein, and baked Portuguese rice. They have yet to disappoint and they are very reliable if you want to order and have lunch by 11am. Most places aren't even ready to serve food by 11am.

Daniel Y.

Yelp
My goodness, you can't do fried chicken like this. Just do yourself a solid and order yourself as many as you can. Unless you have no tastebuds, you'll thank me later. The crispy, delicious skin. The juicy meat. You won't be thinking about anything else. Yes, there's some other food on the menu that's okay, but nothing holds a candle to this fried chicken. Gourmet has all the typical rice boxes that many a person has grown to love for the value. It's a bit of a hole in the wall. It's not trying to be anything more. Thank you for embracing that. You'll find Gourmet off Wentworth, the main stretch of Chinatown. Worth a try, especially, ESPECIALLY for the fried chicken wings.

Emily H.

Yelp
pretty good food, loved all the breakfast items, especially the you tiao (fried dough). it is probably not the best in Chicago, but the best one is so far in the surburb, so this will do for now given its price. Overall i think the value of food is great, it's pretty cheap for big portions; but you can find better tasting options elsewhere in chicago all the porridges are pretty good, also liked the sweet cold ones as dessert (the black rice with date one is good, or the one with plum is also good) the rice noodle dishes are great

Gabriella M.

Yelp
Very cool hole in the wall. The shrimp crepe was incredible. I will definitely be back to try a couple of other things. The menu is huge!

L L.

Yelp
This place use to be my go to place to get tofu pudding but after this time I won't be going back. They just served me this unfinished tofu pudding what a joke.

Yelp
Gourmet Chinese food is located @ 210 W 23rd Street. My wife's co-worker brings in food from this restaurant sometimes so we thought we would check it out. Gourmet Food is located just west of Wentworth on the north side of the street. It's a funky little restaurant reminiscent of Sun Wah when they use to be located on Argyle before moving to their new space on Broadway. As you enter there is an enclosure where pieces of pork chashu hang along with a cooked duck. The restaurant is not much to look at in fact it's kind of a dump. They have a very large menu with a large variety of items to select from. Everything from vegetable to chicken, to pork, to beef to seafood dishes @ unbelievably low prices. We ordered 3 dishes salt & spicy smelt $5.75, mar-por tofu $5.00 & Mongolian Beef $5.75. Like I said low prices. We ordered sat down and waited. This is definitely off the beaten path. It's more of a local joint with all Chinese people eating there (go figure a Chinese restaurant with Chinese people lol). While we were waiting there was one Chinese woman who was standing by her table with half eaten containers of food that seemed a little distraught babbling in Chinese & continuously striking the table with a rolled up piece of paper. My wife and I just looked at her. It's a good thing she was on the other side of the restaurant and there was a row of table separating us from Little Ms Chinese whack job. When our food was done the owner/cashier called me up to the counter to pick up our 3 containers of food. I was surprised at the weight of the containers and decided to eat there. It was such an elegant ambiance with our styrofoam containers, plastic forks on dirty table with hot sauce in open containers sitting on the table. The attention to detail was amazing (well whatta you want for $5.00-$5.75?). As it turns out the bottom of all 3 containers were loaded with rice with the entrees on top (no wonder they were so heavy). That being said the food wasn't anything to write home about. The smelt was ok, but it was bland as was the tofu. The Mongolian Beef was served over rice not noodles. Once again it was just ok. That being said they do have a huge menu and the prices are very reasonable. I would be willing to go back and try some of the other items, just don't expect Golden Bull 242 W Cermak or Homestyle (3205 S. Halsted) quality food. They get and additional star bumping them up to 3 for the following reasons. Price, quantity of food and the huge menu selection.

Lynn B.

Yelp
Incredible food, great price, and straight to the point service. This place is under appreciated. It feels like homemade food from my grandma's house. Congee: definitely recommend straight to the point congee in a large styrofoam cup; and not to mention the long rolls of fried dough just to dip inside Sticky fried rice: delicious and great portion size; reminds me of my childhood

Tom C.

Yelp
Gourmet has been around since I was toddler. I remember times with my parents and grandparents and have photos there. I use to go a lot during high school because it was cheap eats. Lately, I have been going every week for 3 years to have easy to make school lunches for my kids and myself for work. I mix it up each week so we all wouldn't get sick of it. For the price, gourmet offers great food.

Meadow Z.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in Chicago. Authentic Cantonese food. The price is great!

Henry T.

Yelp
I can't think of an older hole in the wall than this place. Probably been around since the tongs ruled Chinatown, don't know if they're still around... If you don't care about the setting or sticky tables, then this is your place. I've only ever gotten takeout from this place since I was a kid. Prices use to be dirt cheap but they're more moderate now. Food isn't the tastiest or the worst and my most recent order was meh but the stability of this place earns it four stars. Portions are generous compared to other places. One big main reason I decided on ordering from here was the English menu to be honest. Some places struggle to take orders in english and the super authentic restaurants only offer chinese menus. I ordered rice boxes recently, the Portuguese pork chop baked rice and beef and vegetable rice box. The beef and vegetable was ok. Nothing worth repeating. The Portuguese baked rice sucked. If I had to rank it against other Chinatown restaurants, it would be dead last. Definitely not ordering that again. The pork chop was fatty and the sauce was not that good. I'll stick to childhood staples like white egg gravy with beef over rice. Please don't ever dine in here. Funny annoying fact, you can order at the kiosk inside and pay with Google Pay but if you order over the phone and pick up, you can't pay with Google pay. Found that strange but I'm assuming they avoid the kiosk fees though.

Kieu T.

Yelp
i was craving tofu pudding and my friend said this place has good tofu pudding. i'm used to tofu pudding with ginger syrup but this was already submerged in sugar syrup (no ginger taste) it's not bad but i wish it had ginger in it. the tofu is fluffy and soft.

Jonna N.

Yelp
Definitely a hole in the wall place in Chinatown. It isn't a place that looks super amazing and tries to get you in by plating wondrous food or having street art inside or outside. It's very low-key. The food is cheap and they make very nice Chinese meals. I usually leave happy and full from here. It's very bare bones when you walk in, you wouldn't think that their food is good, but it's very good! It's got a little butcher set up right when you walk in. The counter has some baked goods. They are a little shop full of the places tons of people hit up in Chinatown - bakery, butcher shop and restaurant. This is a local joint that you see a lot of Asian people eating at. So you know it's good if the locals go here. The cashiers do know English so don't fear going in. They have a menu in English, too. Parking isn't the best, but it's expected when it's Now they have a 15 waiting zone because so many people get take-out from Gourmet Food. This is a definitely a place to get tasty Chinese type meals, not the Americanized Chinese food like orange chicken. Although, they do serve that, but in my opinion - go here to eat like locals.

Anthony N.

Yelp
You have to stick to the main dishes like chicken onion rice, fish and eggplant rice. Big boxes of food for $9. Sometimes their food lacks flavor but it's always fresh.

Alex T.

Yelp
Been going here since I was young...one of the more underrated hole in the wall carry out restaurant. They have variety of dishes + rice box. And my all time favorite is their Portuguese pork chop baked rice and I get that every time I do carry out there A layer of curry (but on the sweet side) on top A layer of pork chop A layer of fried rice with egg All baked together....it's truly legit and you should try it too

Eva S.

Yelp
In Cantonese, this place is pronounced "May may jee gah." Gourmet is authentic, delicious and beloved by Chinatown locals. Some favorite orders where you can't go wrong: 1) Minced Beef with Green Peas Over Rice (comes with a pan-fried egg) -Variation A: ask to add jalapenos. -Variation B: ask for the ketchup version 2) Deep fried chicken wings ($1/each) 3) Fish Fillet with Chinese Broccoli Over Rice 4) Salt & Pepper Pork Chops Over Rice 5) Basically anything labelled "salt & pepper"... (chicken, squid, shrimp etc.) GET IT! The place is small and unassuming from the outside... and yes, the exterior looks very dated. The service is a little brusque. They may seem a little rude but they're not singling you out so don't take it personally. In fact, it mimics old-school Hong Kong and it's a hole-in-the-wall place... the cheeky, cut-to-the-chase service is kind of (pleasantly) expected. What they lack in decor/pleasantries they make up for in their delicious food and speedy service. I love this place BECAUSE their food alone has carried them so far. My family and I have been coming here for years. There's a lot of competition right along Wentworth and their location is kind of tucked behind Chinatown's main road. Regardless... if you come to Chinatown and want good, authentic food, hustle on over to Gourmet. It's about $5 per rice box. Skip dining in. Most people get take-out and you will see rice boxes stacked/bundled and lined up across the back table behind the counter. Costumers will pop in, pay and hurry off in the matter of seconds. You come to Gourmet because you like the food. You don't need to shovel out $$$ for it to be authentic and satisfying. $5 and you're covered for the day, and will have leftovers for tomorrow (maybe). That's what I love about Chinatown.

Rosa J.

Yelp
There was actually a good number of people wondering in Chinatown this afternoon. Parking is usually a hassle. However, we found a free street spot on Archer near Connie's Pizza. "Gourmet Food" is near the corner of 23rd. St. and Wentworth Ave. Like many places in Chinatown, holding on some green bucks is going to be useful. As a matter of fact, GF is cash only, and we only spent $12.45 for us two! Obviously, a bilingual menu is provided at the register. I didn't see it when I walked in, so I just ordered whatever I saw on the wall or on the trays near where the boss lady was standing. This place is truly hole-in-the-wall, very run-down, and quite filthy and perhaps unbearably gross if nothing sanitation wise here was acceptable to your standard. Hubby and I felt alright and were excited for a little money we spent on our Christmas feast. GF serves Cantonese home cooking. We had the following: - congee with pork ($2): the small size was enough for an individual with a normal appetite. Chinese-style congee is great for those who are anemic or feeling under the weather. Both hubby and I liked it. - congee with pork & preserved vegetables ($2): one of the ladies from the kitchen came out to ask me if it was ok to substitute this for the congee with pork, assuming they only had enough for one (1) small order. It was also tasty. - green chive bun ($1.35): the portion was pretty generous for how much it costs. If you ever want a quick snack on the go, get a couple of them and you would all set. - shrimp funn roll ($2.50): I saw this was one of the popular dishes. Well, this is a Cantonese staple and they made it well. Nevertheless, I wish the shrimps were cleaned a little better; there were a few of them still contained dirt. - Chinese Long John wrapped with omelet ($2-$3): I wasn't sure about the price, yet it looked delicious on the tray. In hubby's description, he said he would explain to someone as "a Chinese-style doughnut wrapped with an omelet, covered with a thin layer of teriyaki sauce." He was accurate for the most part. The "sauce" was a bit sweet for me, but hubby would definitely order this again. All prices listed above were as of 12/25/2016. The boss lady and other workers there speak Cantonese as their mother tongue, but they all can communicate in Mandarin Chinese with me. Most patrons there are local residents. Hence, if you're looking for a non-touristy joint in the area and don't mind the less-desirable ambiance, I will recommend "Gourmet Food" for an inexpensive meal.

Melody C.

Yelp
Literally a hole in the wall that most probably won't appreciate unless they grew up eating it. You get a good quantity for the price that you pay, and while they aren't my go-to for HK BBQ, I do like coming here for lunch. I will make that cta train commute just to get myself a spare ribs with black bean sauce over rice or minced beef with a fried egg over rice. I usually ask for their food without MSG just because I know it can be pretty greasy. While I love hot pot and some of the new places that have opened in the past 10 years, this is basically comfort food if you grew up in old Chinatown and want the food that was served before these new establishments came out.

A H.

Yelp
Great chicken wings even after all of these years. I called ahead and did pickup. Same as I remember it years ago. Chow fun was a little lacking in salt but the chicken wings were fire

Rose T.

Yelp
I was ripped off. I ordered the "cow mix noodle" and my total was $10.40. Last time I was there 6 months ago, it was $7.40. I thought it was inflation and supply issues. Was I over charged because I looked like a tourist with my backpack and work clothes? I have been there like more that 30 years when noodle soup was $2.50. The taste got bland. I couldn't taste any beef flavor. The noodle was a little hard and alot less than before. The napa is the one that has the most flavor. The worst part was I didn't even get tiny piece of the liver which is the best part. It used to be the best bang for the buck for Chinese food.

Sherwin C.

Yelp
Normally this would get a 3-star review for the food alone, however because of the big variety, fast speed, and incredible prices this gets bumped up to 4 (this is cheaper than fast food and as such shouldn't be compared to restaurants twice its price per dish). The restaurant itself is fairly small and busy -- but run very efficiently where they move a line as quickly as somewhere like KFC. The menu offers many types of Chinese cuisine including Cantonese, Szechuan, Mandarin, Shanghai, Hong Kong, etc. Everything is offered from dim sum to baked race to Chinese barbeque to buns to noodle soups to Taiwanese Breakfast to curry. The food itself isn't spectacular but is of higher quality than expected for this price (especially the rice). Think of it like a food-court-plus. The flavor combinations you'd expect out of food court restaurants but in bigger portions and generally prepared decently. Nothing here that will win any culinary awards though. I'd consider returning to this place if I'm in the area although there's other well-priced options like Chi Cafe that do offer a nicer decor and better ingredients for only a few more dollars. But if you need to feed a large group on a budget, this is definitely your place to go.

Ramon L.

Yelp
Okay. Once you walk into this place, you might want to discredit me as a yelper. BUT, you need to understand this place. They're not trying to win you over with fancy decorations or modern design like places like Sweet Station attempt to. I've been coming here since I was 5 and I seriously think the Chinese character cutouts they hang on the wall are the same ones I saw as a kid. What makes up for the lack of show, is the food. Rice boxes to-go are the name of the game. $5 for delicious and nostalgic Chinese food is unbeatable. The food is really, really good. I'm guessing I've eaten more than a billion Chinese meals in my life, and this is the place to go to keep me wanting for more. Personal favorites are salt and pepper shrimp and ginger and scallion chicken. Make sure to get some of their hot sauce to go, too. I'm putting my reputation on the line for this one.

Len L.

Yelp
Hidden gem from the main strip of Chinatown-Wentworth Ave, most people who live here go here for their traditional rice boxes. I heard about this place and had to see for myself. They have a vast amount of dishes to choose from, I stuck with what I know and have eaten before. I proceed to the counter and of course, waited for my turn to be served. I ordered a beef and rice with extra gravy, she took my money (avg dish here is $5 - $8) and told me it will take 10 minutes. If you eat here on premise, you get a cup of hot soup. If you take out, you get nothing but the dish you ordered. Nothing fancy here, just exactly what you order. Plenty of metered parking in front.

Betty U.

Yelp
Excellent home style Chinese meals at consistently affordable prices for over 30 years. No other choice for this caliber of authenticity & pricing.

James T.

Yelp
i want to give one star because everyone knows all good real chinese restaurants has low stars. with that said, i give this chinese take out no stars!

Sonny S.

Yelp
Oh Gourmet...what would I do without you and your deliciously cheap rice boxes? I'm so glad my friends introduced to me this place! I've recommended it to so many people looking for cheap eats. The restaurant itself is more of a take out place, but there are a few chairs and tables inside if you'd like to dine in, but it's kind of dirty and the ground is sometimes sticky. I usually prefer to order take out. On to the food...Gourmet is known for their ridiculously cheap rice boxes. They also sell xiao long bao, BBQ meats, etc. For just about $5, you are able to get a large box of food that usually lasts me two meals. They have all different types of rice boxes from chicken to pork to beef, but I usually get the minced beef with a fried egg on top - so good! They also have some of the best fried chicken wings I've had in Chinatown! These wings have to be battered in crack - that's how good they are! I've also tried the xiao long bao here, but the skins are too thick and there is rarely any soup inside, so avoid them at all costs. The douhua (tofu dessert) here is really good and super fresh - they make it fresh daily, and it's only a dollar something for a large container. Make sure you get here early for this because they sell out pretty fast. Because it's located in the old part of Chinatown, parking can be a bit tricky, but there is street parking - just watch out for all those people who think they're invincible that walk out in the middle of the streets or behind your car as you're parking! Overall, it's a great joint to grab a quick lunch at rock-bottom prices.

Lily Z.

Yelp
I've been eating from this place for as long as I can remember. It has been recently remodeled so the interior looks a lot nicer and modern. But it's still a very basic and no frills restaurant that serves everything you could ever want in Chinese food. They added a BBQ section, so now you can order duck, roasted pork, etc. It's cheap, authentic and oh so good. Plus, the serve my favorite, sweet tofu and red beans and coconut.

Tony C.

Yelp
posters missed a key point: untranslated/off-the-menus items that are posted on the walls. Currently it's featuring some "mountain mushroom" stir fried with a variety of meats. There is also a pickled mustard with pork intestine over rice and some other varieties of beef/fish (which i can't seem to recall right now :( :( ) Also of note, under chow mein/chow fun/vermicelli, the noodle of choice can be substituted literally into anything, much like any of the plats over rice items, ie, Rice Vermicelli Singapore Style can be made with Chow Fun, etc. Between Mei Wei Zhi Jia and Wing Chan, a lonely Chinaman can dine for days at $5/nite.

Anonymous K.

Yelp
Pros: -Cheap Cons: -Extremely dirty kitchen -Extremely dirty environment as well -Food not so fresh -I've seen huge mouse coming from their back of the restaurant In conclusion: -Go to new tasty place instead -Cheap and way cleaner -Better environment as well

Jaci Y.

Yelp
Wow Gourmet has let me down big time, I heard that they changed owners hip and MAN, the food changed with changing the ownership. We ordered the usually fish over rice with some vegetables, mapo tofu and some chow mein noodles. The Fish was frozen, the tofu spelled spoiled. It was incredibly a let down for me and my family. It was $20 down the drain. VERY SAD!

Howard L.

Yelp
This is still our current (and long time) favorite place for Chinatown carry-out. Great value and taste at about $5 per dish. A couple of our favorites are Singaporean noodles, spicy salt and pepper pork, and fish fillet with veggies.

Edmond L.

Yelp
I've eaten here since the early 90's. It has changed but not much. It's off Wentworth so it doesn't get as much attention as other restaurants. Hidden gem? I wouldn't go that far. You do get decent food for your dollar, that may be the biggest attraction to the place. Hygiene seems to be questionable. Tables were not wiped off. Food was hot and tasted fresh but you have to think they're doing something right because while we were there, there was a steady stream of business. It's not what it used to be but I think it's still a decent place to stop at. I doubt I'd recommend it to others. As big of a hole in the wall places as I am, I'm not sure I can recommend this place in good faith.

Mifimi C.

Yelp
Place was dirty (Which made me wonder abt the cleanliness of their kitchen) n food wasn't good. I ordered the fish n Chinese broccoli over rice n shrimp rice crepes. Vege was old n I wasn't impressed with the shrimp funn roll either. They were real generous w the portion of rice tho. I won't be going back.

Diana G.

Yelp
Hmmm.....thought I reviewed this place before. Anyways, they can be hit or miss with the food sometimes. Sometimes it's bland tasting. Still a great spot for cheap eats!

Feb S.

Yelp
Taste: 4.5/5 Location: 3/5 Cleanliness: 2/5 Ambience: 1/5 Value for Money: 5/5 (Price, given the Food Taste) Service: 2.5/5 I give this place a high rating simply for one thing: great prices for great food. Where else can you get delicious food with prices ranging just from $4 to $6? One more thing, they have hundreds of dishes, so you'll always have options to choose from. Apart from the food, everything else is just alright or even below standard. The place is dirty, the cashier and servers can barely speak English (with the exception of one of them). I'd recommend you to get your food to go instead.

Dung D.

Yelp
STAY AWAY - there are too many great Chinese food in this area to waste your time and money here. The food is mediocre at best. The place looks filthy and the chef doesn't use gloves while he is rubbing his bare hands all over the meat you will put in your mouth. Health inspection should pay this place a visit. The service is rude and anything but fast (this is supposed to be a fast food joint). Do yourself a favor and go next door to Go 4 Food for a $4-$6 Michelin recommended lunch!

TC C.

Yelp
This is where the locals go for authentic Chinese cooking. No frills, just good and cheap food, and lots of it. One time, I drove 2 hours down from Wisconsin because my pregnant wife was craving its savory tofu dish. We drove the 2 hours, but did not get our food. However, whenever we come to Chicago Chinatown, we make sure we go there and introduce our friends to go.

Yelp
Not the cleanest place, but the best rice boxes for a little over $5! Love the steam chicken with onion sauce! And the fish filet and minced beef with egg on top are great too! Never tried their barbecued food but looks ok.

Yelp
My husband was in the mood for congee so we figured we'd try this place out. Keep in mind this place is cash only and kind of divey. We couldn't find a spot, so I got out and placed an order for carryout. It was around 11 on Sunday and there was a short line, but it was moving quickly. Most customers appear to do carryout since the seating area is pretty small. Luckily I speak decent Chinese, but they seemed to speak some English so even if you don't speak Chinese, you should be fine. I ordered a large beef congee, 1 peanut mochi, 1 mantou (steamed bread roll), half of a roasted duck, 1 cold soymilk, 1 fan tuan (salty rice roll) and the price came out to about 17 bucks. Pretty cheap. Everything tasted fine. I wasn't blown away by anything, but it was cheap and fast.

Yelp
I've been to Chinatown so many times but had never come to this restaurant. This may be my new go-to place for cheap chinese food!! They seemed to sell a lot of different foods that most other Chinese restaurants in the area dont sell. First, they sell roasted duck. DELICIOUS! And it was not overly fatty (as most roasted ducks can be). We also got the roasted chicken (I didnt try it but my friend did and loves it). We also got the garlic eggplant which was awesome (I love eggplant). For dessert we had the soft tofu (slight sweet and served warm). All this food for about $23! Not too shabby. I'm definitely coming back to try their other dishes! Prices looked to be about $5.

Yelp
Pretty much grew up on this place since it is perfect for starving student budget. Most rice boxes can feed 2 people for lunch and comes with soup for about $5. The place is not much to look at but good for take home meal any day. Recommendations: Spicy Salt and Pepper Pork Chops Singapore Noodles Tomato Beef on Rice Curry Beef Brisket Chicken Wings (appetizer) Jar Jar (dessert) Grass Jelly (summer dessert) Soy Milk Jelly (dessert) - made fresh daily

Yelp
This may actually be the MOST dive-y place I have ever been to (and trust me, I've been to MANY jank establishments). This place takes dive-y so far, it's almost charming...like you walked on to a set of a Hong Kong fast food joint back in the 70s. Gourmet food is a super no frills and all-business type of establishment catered to the Chinatown locals. Food is rock solid and dirt cheap. I got the salt and pepper shrimp rice box, black pepper beef rice box, two rice balls, and two cups of freshly made soy milk to go for ~$18 (that's two meals for two people w/ left overs!). Absolutely incredible. They are clearly doing SOMETHING right if they are still bustling amidst the competition from Chinatown square and the main street of Wentworth. I was debating whether to give it 5 stars because I have no doubt that I will be back over and over and over again, and that's usually my gauge for how many stars to give a place. However, I recognize that the incredibly run-down interior and exterior and the rushed service may be off-putting for many. So accounting for that, 4 stars is probably more reasonable. But all that said, you should absolutely come here for the cheap and delicious Chinese foodstuffs. Soy milk was the bomb. I wish I could've also ordered the tofu dessert before they ran out, because that too was freshly made in house and sold like hot cakes while I was in line. If you can shrug off the decor, this place is REALLY REALLY REALLY worth your while.

Yelp
Wow, just wow. I give this place 5 star because of their incomparable fried chicken wings . Chinese fried chicken wings is chicken wings but Gourmet foods' chicken wings are exceptional! Cheap, fast, and convenient. By far the best chinese take-out in the city of Chicago! 5 STARS!

Yelp
If you are looking for the best bang for your buck, not many places beat gourmet foods. For $5, they give you Chipotle "bowl" quantity (maybe more) amount of food. I got the salt and pepper chicken, and like the reviews said below, if you order anything salt and pepper (pork, chicken, etc., etc.) you cannot go wrong. It was my first time getting salt and pepper chicken, following the suggestions below, and I am an instant fan. This is a true hole-in-the-wall in chinatown, so expect limited English from the staff. But the food is worth a try. *Tips: Cash only
