The Best King Cakes in New Orleans for Mardi Gras | Eater New Orleans

"Gracious hits it out of the park with king cakes every year, and in 2025 the bakery is keeping it simple: there’s a galette de rois, an almond (Queen), and the always-popular nectar cream. It also happens one of the best-priced, starting at $26. Want to make your own? The bakery’s kit makes it easy." - Beth D’Addono

These Are New Orleans’s Best Bakeries

"Gracious serves up satisfying sandwiches on homemade bread that is ubiquitously used by other shops around the city, particularly the standout ciabatta. It also offers a small breakfast menu and outstanding baked goods outside of breads: pastries, cookies, whole cakes, and pies." - Eater Staff, Clair Lorell

The Best Sandwiches in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Gracious Bakery’s ciabatta will make any sandwich great — seriously, put anything on there. But the local bakery also has an excellent chicken salad, set off by pickled onions and greens that make for a winning combo. The toasted Black Forest ham sandwich is also a standout, as is the hot, Reuben-style turkey." - Beth D’Addono

The few things I tried have been delicious but unfortunately the service is not great. I ordered 2 twists and a chicken hand pie. The twists were flaky on the outside, soft on the inside and absolutely worth a trip to this bakery. Unfortunately no clue how the hand pie tasted because I never got it. My order was to go and when I opened it at home instead of the hand pie they gave me a piece of quiche. It was very tasty just not what I ordered. I think it was an onion quiche. Crust was deep brown and flaky. I went back a second time (checked my order before I left) and got chicken salad on croissant. Again absolutely delicious. Large chunks of chicken, not overdressed with almonds and I think grapes. Great flavor and the croissant was also good. Service is not terribly friendly but the food is worth overlooking that.

Google
Great spot to grab a coffee and a croissant or piece of cake. The store was clean, modern, and vibrant. The staff were super friendly and make you feel at home here in New Orleans.

Andrea Ballard

Google
What a great spot! It doesn’t have the ‘cozy’ feel I usually associate with bakeries, instead it’s much more minimalist and stark. BUT the warmth comes through 100% with the staff, who went out of their way to help me. The Black and Gold Whoopie pies were delicious (and would be perfect to serve at a Saints party), and when I asked if I could photograph the Maker’s Mile Map they kindly gave me their last copy! Excellent experience with food and service.

Google
Has a more modern feel compared to most bakeries I go to, but nothing wrong with that - a little different sometimes is a good thing. My chai latte was spiced nicely and I like that there are books to read

Google
Paid $5 for an iced chai , and they filled the cup up so much with ice, that I hardly got any drink. Told the worker about it, and she says nothing. It was very clear that she did not care that I was unhappy. Really did not like the Chai anyways. Just mostly tasted like Milk. I will not be returning to this place again . The employees should be more friendly, and caring toward the customers. I feel completely ripped off my the amount of chai I received, and the lady did not care. The lady kind of had a bad attitude in my opinion. Wish the sweet young lady from several days ago would have been working, because she was really nice, and very caring about making my drink good. I will never return after today's bad experience though.

Google
If I could go lower than 1, I would. The sign said closes at 6pm but the rude cashier was yelling we're closed and it was only 3pm. A waste of time and energy.

Elizabeth Hakobyan

Google
20$ for a bagel and a tea and the bagel is a finger size?! On top of that it’s also older than my grandma. This is unacceptable. I drove 10 min to get the breakfast here and this is the breaking I get.

Floyd Georges

Google
Very weak coffee (cold brew that resembles the color or tea and taste of water) and somewhat combative, non-friendly service on most recent visit.

Yelp
I always get good service when going to Gracious Bakery + Cafe. The coffee and caffeinated bevs are B+ or better. The curry lentil hand pies are A+.

Yelp
I really like the food here but the experience I just had was surprisingly awful. Walked in and ordered a pastry and iced coffee. While they made the coffee their whole system went down, preventing me from paying (card or cash). I stood patiently at the counter while they tried to fix it. In the mean time they put my coffee in front of me. Finally after 15 minutes they hadn't figured it out and I had to go back to work. I just said, sorry, I have to go back to work. The manager just said "ok" and pulled back my coffee. Cool. No "so sorry" for the wait or the six attempts to pay. Instead they'll dump my coffee out and throw away the food (I would hope after already heating it up). They weren't even nice about it and the manager definitely had an attitude the whole time. The other woman behind the counter has apologized several times, she actually felt bad

George L.

Yelp
I don't have a complaint about the service, it appears to be more in the ownership. Every time I go here only one person is working, meaning they run the register as well as make the food. This results in incredibly slow service and it takes forever to get anything as they are constantly running back and forth between the kitchen and register. Hire more people to staff your cafe.

Yelp
This white cheddar biscuit with egg and smoked cheddar might actually be the best breakfast biscuit I've ever had. The bread was amazing, and the lovely ladies working today were the sweetest

Yelp
The person at the cash register specifically at the Pyrtania street location around 7:30am on 6/18/24 was incredibly rude to me. If you expect to be treated with respect and dignity please don't bother patronising this establishment until they get new staff. I've never been disrespected in such a way in my entire life.

Yelp
Menu Also the place is now open to like 9 PM. Decent breakfast food, spacious place, too.

Yelp
Firstly, food was delicious AS ALWAYS. But today the lovely lady behind the counter (working a solo shift) made me an egg sandwich that was... simply... divine. I'm a simple person, I just want bacon egg and cheese on a bagel. Even though she was working the counter, it was slow enough in the middle of the day that she was willing to make me eggs (even though I know when they're working alone sometimes they can't) and these eggs were SILKY, let me tell you SILKY!!!!!! I have never had such good eggs IN MY LIFE. I don't know her name, she worked on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at 3pm and it was AWESOME. I'm having an awful time in life and this helped so much.

Yelp
The smells of this place when you walk should be captured in a candle or something! I enjoyed the nice warm welcome I had when I entered the cafe. It was my first time here. I had ordered a boudin king cake prior for pick up; orders must be placed in advance. I had paid prior too, so it was super easy. I walked in, was greeted, got my cake and left. The space is pretty big and could be good for groups. It looks like counter service as well, so separate checks would be easy too. There is parking off street outside and you are next door to Creole Creamery which is pretty amazing. I tried the boudin king cake when I was home. I didn't know whether it was cooked or not, I assume it was, but wish I had some instructions or had the nice lady behind the counter let know some cooking instructions. But regardless, I heated the oven up to 400 and heated it up for about 10 or minutes. I tasted it and that bread was so freaking flaky and good. It basically melted in my mouth. I loved the bacon pieces sprinkled all over. There is a tiny container of syrup that is included if you wanna pour that on your king cake. I did taste a little before pouring it on and it had a spicy sweet flavor to it. So, I poured a little on a slice and I didn't exactly love it, so I just ate the cake as is. The crackling on top, that they call it, is not cracking. That is pork rines. True crackling is fried, cubed bacon fat which is the most calorific, heart attack pushing, delicious thing you will put in your mouth. I ate one of the pork rines and didn't care for it. Overall, I did really enjoy that boudin. I don't know where the boudin came from or if they make it in house, but it was damn good and i am a boudin snob from living in Cajun Country for a while. I will be back, it's a super nice bakery.

Yelp
This Gracious location is the worst by far. We've ordered from other Gracious bakeries and orders were received without issue. Every time I have ordered from this location there is a problem w/the latest being today, the order was canceled because they were waiting on lunch bread to complete our order. Not to mention, no one called us to inform but where the DoorDash driver showed up he was told what was going on & phoned me. The person from the store is talking in the background saying she didn't know why I kept placing the order as she or someone T the store was canceling it due to the bread issue. How about just picking up a phone and letting us know there was yet another problem. Will not try this place again & I suggest no one else does either. There are other locations

Yelp
GREAT service except wasn't told salad over chips was $1.50 substitution charge-it may have been shown somewhere that I didn't notice creamy dressing was good-but only if you like garlic pricey but everything is now will go agin

Yelp
This was my first time stopping in at their uptown location. A few weeks ago, someone smashed their window! Not cool! So I wanted to pay them a visit :) COVID procedures were less seating, must wear a mask, baristas wear masks, and contactless payment. I wish I could remember the name of the barista who served me. She was so sweet. She knew exactly what kinds of breads they had fresh that day and exactly where they were to show me. Even though I didn't get a loaf this day, I got an awesome gorgeous croissant. Ohhh it was delicious. I also got an iced chai. Also delicious I will definitely be back next time I find myself uptown in the early morning!

Yelp
I love gracious so much. Amazing friendly staff, really good coffee and espresso drinks, delicious treats, and always good vibes to work quietly or meet a friend for good conversation. The happy hour is also unbeatable and I'm so excited that the prytania location is now open in the evenings. And the bagels are secretly really good. This place is the best!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Pandemic update Quick update! They have limited their indoor seating with about half the tables taken out of service. They have floor markers at the queue to get you to space out. They also are asking for credit card/debit payment to limit contact. There is a nice patio out the back door which I always forget exists. PLUS they have a liquor license now. I stopped in for lunch and my Mom LOVED her chicken salad sandwich. As always I wish there were more non-meat options but decided for a egg and cheese sandwich on a biscuit and it was tasty. PLUS amazing scones and a day old almond croissant. Tasty and the staff was great.
google avatar

Camly T.

Yelp
I had a lovely experience here. The person working was patient as I perused the pastries and all of the breakfast menu items. There were many delicious looking baked goods. I got the egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on a biscuit with sausage and a cinnamon bun (not pictured). The breakfast sandwich was pretty good and super filling. Bigger size than I expected which fit the price. They were nice enough to warm up the cinnamon roll. The ice tea was good too. They have a lovely outside area in the back with a few tables and chairs.
google avatar

Mike T.

Yelp
It's a fairly new place, large and bright. The prices are kind of high. I had a almond crescent which had lots of almonds on top, but not what I was expecting inside. Not a great roll. Babycakes had a cinnamon bun which also wasn't that great. The coffee was good.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places to go for a quick breakfast. My favorites are their danishes & croissants as well as their breakfast sandwich (must order it on their biscuit with garlic aioli- they're the best!) They have a few tables inside and an outdoor patio that's perfect for grabbing a coffee and getting work done.

Siri A.

Yelp
This is such an amazing neighborhood place. Lots of friendly faces and nice staff. The cold brew is really good and so are the bagels. There's so much seating and a patio outside. An unexpected favorite of mine.
google avatar

Katie W.

Yelp
Please be advised that if you ask for extra milk in your undrinkable coffee you will be asked to pay a surcharge. Imagine that. You buy a $5 latte and when you ask for some extra milk the "barista" rudely states that it's policy to charge customers for a milk top off. Hmmmm. When I voiced dissatisfaction with that policy stating that I have never been charged for additional milk in my coffee at any other establishment I was told that it was policy and I could take it up with the owner if I had a problem. I was beyond shocked! I then went to speak with the owner assuming that she would be understanding and offer her sincere apologies but that was not the case. She told me that she didn't have time to deal with this issue and was late to meet with someone!! I have never in experienced worse customer service. That will be the last time I overpay for the worst coffee and stale danish.
google avatar

Maddy M.

Yelp
Love this little casual breakfast and lunch spot. Perfect spot to grab breakfast on the go or sit and catch up with friends. Beautiful interior. All the baked goods you could want. Coffee on coffee on coffee. But don't let the breakfast distract you. The sandwiches are fantastic. If the weather is nice the courtyard is adorable. Whatever you do please get the curried lentil Hand pie. It's delicious.

Jeffrey C.

Yelp
The breakfast egg sandwich is worth a trip! Great place with great service. Recommend when in New Orleans.

Herb A.

Yelp
While the cashier was very friendly the woman making the drinks was playing loud rap music. The sandwiches are premade and small. The salad was also premade and you have to mix the salad yourself. The sandwiches in the past were very good but this place has gone downhill. I will not come back to this restaurant.

A R.

Yelp
One of my newest work/dining venues! Gracious is spacious, clean, and has an outdoor patio as well. The selection of sweet and savory pastries is small but creative and quite tasty--even the sugar-glazed items, which I normally tend to avoid. Be sure to go on weekends when the baker often provides their unbelievable rugulach, which are some of the best I've ever had. But go early because I'm not ashamed of my greed and sometimes buy them all. Great sandwiches and some of the best cafe mocha in town!
google avatar

Amilliyan D.

Yelp
Underimpressed with our experience here, which is a shame. There is a lot of potential in such a great location. The patio was underwhelming and had the bare bones of some table and chairs. The food was mediocre. I ordered a turkey, bacon and cheese sandwich, which was brought out in a plastic to-go container, cold. The salad, which we paid $11.50 for, was small and the apple were old and browning. It was also brought out in a to-go container. Very disappointing.
google avatar

P A.

Yelp
Plain donut tasted artificially sweet/vanilla-y. It blows my mind how a bakery can mess up a plain glazed donut. Everything bagel was burned and the texture was chewy and crunchy and pretty difficult to bite. The bagel was also really small. I much prefer La Boulangerie's bagels- bigger, better.

Bill A.

Yelp
Wow has this place gone downhill. Chicken salad used to be great and it's now mediocre at best. Food is now pre-package and served from a refrigerator. I've had better in airports. Other than writing up the order, opening the fridge, putting it on a plate and "serving" it I had to do everything else. Won't be coming back here.
google avatar

Danielle V.

Yelp
I love the Gracious Bakery chain. I frequented the location on St. Charles, but the one on Prytania so happens to be closer to my house. Also, fewer tourists frequent this spot, so that (in my book) is a plus. This seems like a good spot to do an hour or two of schoolwork as there are plenty of outlets and free WiFi! The outdoor patio is a nice touch too. I'm giving this location one star less than the St. Charles location because they skimped on my iced coffee. I got an iced latte and there was definitely an inch between where the coffee stopped and the lid began. Seeing that milk was already part of my coffee order, I didn't think that much space was necessary. Also, they forgot to heat my blueberry muffin. However, even though it wasn't warm the muffin was delicious (buttery and crunch on top with a fluffy filling).
google avatar

Danielle K.

Yelp
Great great place. It's spacious and quiet enough to work for hours with plenty of outlets and menu choices. They sell Valhrona chocolate which is awesome because that's a hard to find brand. The servers are very friendly and I was impressed with their soup of the day. The sandwiches look hefty and amazing, especially the caprese. They have wonderful choices of cream cheese: salmon, roasted veggie or lemon caper. I would definitely go back there to work and my only suggestion is that they add oat milk to their milk offerings.
google avatar

Tim G.

Yelp
If you're looking for fast and consistency -- come here. Everything is freshly baked, and the gracious blend of coffee is sooooo damn legit. Their rewards system is so worth doing if you are going to frequent this location. The donuts are fantastic. Any kind of pastry you want they will heat up. It's a great place to get some work done on your laptop, or just read a book.
google avatar

Melissa D.

Yelp
Space: large, open, clean. Staff: polite, friendly, nice. Drinks: house made chai and hit chocolate are a nice surprise and change from the sugar and preservative-laden mixes at most places. Iced teas and coffees are options as well. They have decaf American and espresso options as well as almond and soy milks. Food: I didn't try anything as there are no gluten-free or vegan options clearly labeled. However, everything looked well-made, buttery, and delicious.
google avatar

Meredith D.

Yelp
Yum! I love the breakfast sandwiches and frequent their location on Jeff Davis. I'm happy to see them take over this space on Prytania. Patio out back.
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
I came here Friday to pick up just regular chocolate chip cookies. $1.50/ea. They were horrible. I threw them away. How can you mess up just an ordinary chocolate chip cookie. Disappointed and won't go back.
google avatar

Bradley S.

Yelp
Some of the sandwiches are pretty good but it's disappointing the side "salad" served with them is just a small amount of lettuce with nothing else. You're better off getting chips. Also the atmosphere was much more vibrant/clean when it was Manhattan Jack. I miss it. They need music in the courtyard again. Anyways, St James definitely takes the cake for best sandwich/salad/lunch spot on this block. They never disappoint and they're just a few doors down. Sorry Gracious.
google avatar

Rich S.

Yelp
Gracious offers delicious pastries, light breakfast and lunch options all in an ambient and modern setting. The menu has surprisingly dense diversity and many great options for people trying to be conscious of calories. If you're not however, the Almond Croissant and Gingersnap cookie are both great options. They serve French Truck coffee I believe, which is the absolute best coffee in the city. So you get lots of great things going on at Gracious. The only thing? It's a very quiet place. Music is always low and people aren't socializing much. Great for homework I suppose !
google avatar

Eileen M.

Yelp
Love this bakery! Great place to do work. Excellent coffee and the salads are delicious! Super friendly staff as well!
google avatar

Bianca B.

Yelp
I had a terrible experience, and will never patronize this bakery again. I traveled to New Orleans from DC to celebrate my birthday, and had only one request-for my sister to order the brown sugar pecan cake. The cake was beautifully decorated, but was dry, had a brittle texture, and was essentially tasteless. And the cake tasted like it wasn't freshly made. My family had to get another dessert to salvage my birthday celebration. I messaged the owner, who thought it was a good idea to 'stand behind the quality of their product' instead of acknowledging and rectifying my disappointing customer experience. In times like these, businesses should not take for granted their loyal customers, and this business truly missed an opportunity to maintain a loyal customer. I returned the barely touched cake back to the bakery, and Hannah was truly 'gracious' and was far more accommodating than her employers

A F.

Yelp
Subpar donut. Ambience isn't cute. They need to add like greenery, art or better furniture. Feels like a warehouse in there. Staff was kinda rude too.
google avatar

Alex J.

Yelp
Had a doughnut and it was pretty bad. Coffee was OK. The next day had some of their fancier desserts and they were very good. So a mixed experience, but definitely skip the doughnuts.

Susan M.

Yelp
Had breakfast at the Prytania location. I ordered an egg on the side with a croissant. Gracious always has good croissants, but, the egg was awful. It tasted like a thawed out frozen egg or just egg whites and no yolk. It was a big piece of air, no flavor, no substance to it. The place itself is clean, the line moved quickly.
google avatar

Shannon W.

Yelp
Gracious Bakery and Cafe was a fine place on St. Charles. My girlfriend had a croissant and I had a cinnamon roll or something similar. It wasn't bad, was t great. All around a fine bakery.
google avatar

Maddie B.

Yelp
I love visiting Gracious- their breakfast pastries and coffee are great! I've never had anything short of fresh and delicious here.

Leena O.

Yelp
Not sure if we ordered the wrong thing or if it was an off day but baked goods were not as good as we expected. Kiddo enjoyed his donut though. Coffee was terrible. Friendly staff and casual environment with back patio area. Might be willing to give it another try if it was cheaper...not expensive but not worth money.
google avatar

Tommy M.

Yelp
Had heard people talking about this place so I stopped this morning for breakfast. Not overly impressed with food or environment - had a breakfast egg bagel and coffee - there are many places better than this bakery/cafe. Not likely to return...

Nicole Z.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast food, but in theme with the gentrification of the area, the food and pastries were a bit overpriced. Got a tasty smoked salmon sandwich, which was the perfect savory breakfast with a good amount of protein to keep you satiated for touring the city until lunch.

Julia B.

Yelp
I come here fairly often for a nice, quick lunch and occasionally a drink or baked good. It's a nice bright space to meet up with people or get some work done. In terms of food, I highly recommend the chicken salad on greens! They also have good iced tea and croissants. I would just caution people with food allergies, because the bakery items in the case are all touching and close together. As someone with a nut allergy, there have been a few times that I wasn't able to get something because it was touching a cookie or muffin with nuts in it. That being said, the staff members are friendly and helpful. They're knowledgeable about the ingredients in their food and happy to help accommodate your food needs.
