The Essential Flavors of Brittany, France

"The origins of this ubiquitous treat are pure Breton, or at least pure Breton butter, when chocolatier Henri le Roux made his first batch of caramels with salted butter. The recipe caught on, and some of the top places to sample these sweet and salty treasures are at Grain de Vanille in Cancale." - Kristy Alpert

Delicious desserts! We tried their Millefeuille Vanille which was great! We especially loved Le Rocher de Cancale!! Creamy with salted caramel in the middle, it was yummy! Great coffee too!

High quality traditional French pastries. The pictures speak for themselves.Off the beaten path and parking was difficult to find, must be a place for locals. It’s owned by the chef of Le Coquillage, that explains the extremely high quality and the attention to details. The best pastries we had in the whole 2 weeks in France.

Love the millefeuille. I also enjoyed their little flan. The chocolate tart is good but need to be shared because vey chocolaty. What ever you take you can not be wrong😉

I'm back in Germany, enjoying the confiture abricot vanille. All the products we tasted from this store were absolutely fantastic. Many thoughts and all our love to Aurelia, she went above and beyond as a host and she's the reason we will come back. We love her! Nora and Flo

Yelp
As the other reviewers have said this place is top notch! We staggered in early Saturday morning and got a sampling of their finest pastries. We saw the same baker from the No Reservations with Anthony Bordain. We got a little bit of everything which included a caramel macaroon, chocolate du pain, kouign amann, and the famous mille feuille! All were perfectly executed and tasted amazing. The macaroon had the perfect egg like shell with a chewy center, not to mention the caramel was caramelized to perfection and so buttery. The chocolate du pain is so common in France, in yet, Grain de Vanille still excelled. Perfect layers and the chocolate was still warm from the oven. Mmm. Lastly the Mille feuile! This is the real reason I wanted to go here is to try this pastry full of layers and pastry cream. Anthony said that you had to preorder but it must of gotten so popular that now they have personal pieces to buy. It was delicious. One of the best bakeries I have ever been to.. Actually it may be the best because everything was so divine. I do not think you could go bad. Every element is special in their desserts and I just can't applaud them enough.

Yelp
The mille feuille, a speciality here, is NOT TO BE MISSED. Wow...we had the pleasure of being served this at our dinner at Le Coquillage, and we also ordered it room service another night with a selection of cheeses, because it's that damn good! We also bought a bunch of jams, chutneys, etc. to bring home to a bunch of foodie friends that didn't get to make it to our wedding in Vallery, France.

Yelp
The best pastry shop in France. I don't say that lightly. I had heard about it from the Bourdaine show and it lived up to the expectations. I had the featured pastry which is layers of very delicate pastry with brulee-ed confection sugar and a wonderful vanilla bean cream that is both rich and light. Seems like an impossibility, but it was out of this world. The macaroons are also better (and more interesting) than La Duree's. If you are in Cancale, go here. Just don't ask questions, go.
