16 Options for an Amazing Portland Dining Month | Eater Portland

"Grand Army Tavern’s location, deep up in the reaches of Woodlawn, means its whole-animal butchery and stylish industrial aesthetic can get overlooked. March provides a nice opportunity to check out the menu, including its pork--one option offered is smoked pork chop with roasted vegetables, though vegetarian items are available as well." - Alex Frane

The Grand Army Tavern is a cozy little spot in Woodlawn with great mixed drinks and good food, if you have a diverse palette. They focus on sustainable food and drink and the preparation and care is easily viewable. Prices were reasonable considering the neighborhood and the staff is beyond helpful and friendly. The interior is clean and fresh. My one reason not going for the full five stars is that the menu does exclude people who don't have adventurous tastes. Almost every mixed drink and food item had something unique or special that challenges a conventional item, think of lavender ice cream or duck fat fries. I get that the trend in food in Portland for awhile now has been this line of thinking but having no comfort options on a menu pushes out the customers who aren't as adventurous. Maybe that's not the demographic they are going for but it means I, who liked the food a lot, would never go again with someone who was just looking for classic flavors and were turned off by the lack of options.

I know people get excited about new places and give them good ratings but this place unfortunately does not get a 4 or 5 star rating. The staff is very friendly but otherwise food is extremely overpriced, the potatoes/fries/joejoes dish maybe was less than a while potato and the dish was 6 or 7 dollars. The meat plate , the bolony was good but the other meats are bland and for 15 dollars it is not worth your money. Their beer selection is dismal and consistent of 4 taps! Their IPA choice was weak. I really wanted to like this place but they have given a terrible first impression. Two stars because the staff was very friendly

Pretty good Salmon Lox Benedict, and some of the best breakfast potatoes I have ever had. Cute, very posh decorated space, and friendly staff. Eager to go back and try other menu items.

Super chill and tasty brunch spot. I don't know how in Portland's crazy brunch scene this place isn't more busy, but it makes for a relaxing experience when you go. Pancakes were excellent, as were the breakfast sandwich and the beans and greens with egg. Friendly service too!

Haven't been in a hot minute but everything I've eaten there has been excellent and they have the best tonic for a gin and tonic ever. Drinks were delicious but the weakest in town, that's why I drink at the pizza joint across the street even though I'm gluten and dairy free. So that says something. The owners are super friendly and seem like great folks. I'm glad they're in.the neighborhood and I hope they stay.

The staff is great. The atmosphere is laid back and friendly. When I am in the mood for an exceptional cocktail, this spot is my go to. They take equal care with their food menu. This place is a great destination for a quick (and exquisite) drink or for a fun dinner date.

I consider myself a connoisseur of Portland's food scene, I've eaten at pretty much every place worth going to. This spot is amazing, I've been here at lease 10 times, and I'm always impressed. Everyone that I tell about it or bring with me falls in love. The food is excellent and the drinks are on point every time.

Everything about the Grand Army Tavern demonstrates the care and effort the folks running the place have put into it. The brunch and regular menus have multiple standouts, and I look forward to trying more things. The cocktails from the bar are inventive and delicious. Great place to spend some time with friends.
