"This restaurant in a luxury hotel is the group’s only F&B outlet serving Taiwanese cooking. With crystal chandeliers and oil paintings, the classically furnished room can feel a bit dated, but the friendly service, homely dishes and seafood sourced daily from neighbouring ports more than compensate. Deep-fried chicken nuggets offer a hint of camellia oil aroma that works well with the crispy sliced ginger." - Michelin Inspector

Hung Tao Shanghainese Dumpling (Cianjin)

"Hung Tao was the first restaurant in Kaohsiung to specialise in soup dumplings. Remodelled in 2020, it now boasts a trendy light wood-colour décor with orange banquettes in a brightly lit room. Steamed vegetable dumplings stand out in particular – beautifully shaped like a leaf and stuffed with green bok choy. The free-range chicken soup is crystal clear and flavoursome; mung bean pancake is the perfect way to end a meal." - Michelin Inspector

"Having honed his skills in some famous kitchens in Taiwan, Chef Kang, a Taipei native, chose to start his first venture in Kaohsiung. With an open kitchen and counter seats, the earth-toned room exudes warmth and understated elegance. The single set menu that is served features local and Japanese produce astutely prepared in Japanese-French style. The menu changes every season but always includes one course inspired by Kaohsiung culture." - Michelin Inspector

Stayed here for three nights, hotel was lovely and the staff were very welcoming. Room was very comfortable with stunning views of Kaohsiung on the 38th floor. The bathroom had lovely big bath. The only issue which took away from the room was the noise of lifts as our room was next to them, in the bathroom it sounded like a plane flying high above.

We stayed in the deluxe suite for a night. I was absolutely pampered and relaxed. Upon arrival, we went to 40th fl to check in. The manager was professional and efficient. Very polite and nice. The room was spotless, classic and anything you need it was there. I could just walk in with my changing clothes and I would be fine. It was like a home. Bed was mid firm. Fluffy pillow. Good shower water pressure (wet/dry).

A very grand hotel albeit with somewhat dated decor in the bedrooms. Our bedroom quietness was disturbed by the elevators which sounded like an airplane flying overhead. Also, I found the matress uncomfortably hard. It had an amazing city view. The hotel is in a good location and the service was polite. Kaoshiung is a really nice city.

Great experience overall—especially the spa, which was exceptional. However, the rooftop pool fell short of expectations for a 5-star resort. There’s no poolside service or even a place to grab water, a drink, or a light snack. Instead, you have to get dressed, walk to the restaurant, explain that you're coming from the pool and want a cocktail to go, wait a long time inside a dimly lit space, then head back out, get undressed again, and finally return to relaxing. It felt oddly inconvenient, especially compared to similar resorts throughout Asia. A bit of poolside hospitality would go a long way.

Arriving as westerners for the first time in Taiwan, we could not have been happier with our selection of hotel. The staff were welcoming and super helpful, including finding us a bar nearby when we arrived late, as the hotel one closes at 23:00. A great spread of options for breakfast. Well appointed rooms.

The location and the services were great. The hotel staff were able to accommodate us and attend to our special request - making our first visit to Kaohsiung a memorable experience. The pool and the jacuzzi attendants deserve recognition for their hard work and the way they made us feel well cared for. I find their genuine intention to always accommodate us set them apart from even a high-end onsen we stayed at in Japan.

Stayed in a Themed room 4/13. From check-in to check out we were well cared for. Joyce was amazing. Breakfast buffet had lots of selection but the Room was absolutely stunning. A+++++ Joyce was also another the big standout. 10/10

Google
Really good service from every single staff. Service is 10/10. Location wise, quite conveniently located near the LRT, and a short walk away from Central Park station. Rooms were spacious but sound proofing could be improved.. could hear the couple next door fighting and walking around. Facilities were really nice especially the sauna

Yelp
We were passing through Kaohsiung and stayed here for the night. I was completely wow'ed at the hotel. Clean, posh, and hospitable service. The hotel is attached to a large shopping mall (which we didn't get to check out). We did eat at one of the cantonese restaurants inside of the hotel, which was delicious. Rooms were spacious and we were lucky enough to have a view of the harbor. The hotel is located in a busy area of Kaohsiung, with easy access to parks, harbor, and other shopping complexes. The chain is comparable something better than JW Marriotts, but not quite Ritz Carlton. Would love to be back and check out their newest location at Sunmoon Lake.

Yelp
We were heading to Taipai to catch our connecting flight back to California. However due to high winds from Typhoon Khanun, we were diverted to Kouhsuing, Taiwan. It's one of the major cities in the southern side of Taiwan. We were comped by Eva Air in a very nice Grand Hilai Hotel! The staff are very nice and attentive. The place has a classy yet modern feel to it, very welcoming. The city is beautiful, given the time I would love to explore! The Harbour Restaurant is fantastic! I would definitely come back here and explore Kouhsiung city for a future vacation!

Yelp
Hotel was awesome, staff really friendly, and I loved the fitness center. I wish I brought my swim suit for the pool. I had breakfast included at the 43rd floor. Since I was traveling on business and everything was arranged for me, no clue if that is normal. The buffet breakfast puts most pay to eat places look bad. Everything from American bacon and omlets to Chinese dumplings and noodle soup, a espresso machine (2), fresh baked goods, fruits, and a Feast that made me feel bad that this was included for free. I really loved the breakfast, so I would come back here on vacation next time, just to get a good start on my day. The view from the rooms is pretty awesome too.

Yelp
The Grand Hi-lai is the gold standard for Kaohsiung hotels. Surprising that there are no major American hotels in Kaohsiung, but this is one is comparable to an elite hotel. This place is far above a Marriott/Westin/Hyatt Regency and reminds of me of a Peninsula hotel - traditional decor, a landmark hotel with superb service. Lots of Westerners stay here, the staff speak good English, and it's conveniently connected to the underground Jason's supermarket and Hanshin food hall. This hotel isn't in the class of a St Regis or Ritz, but that's perfectly fine with me - it's feels more accessible/warm and not as exclusive/snooty. Lovely breakfast buffet on a high floor....huge selection and a pleasure to eat there every day. L'Occitane toiletries too

Yelp
I love this hotel! It's close to a convenience store, the staff are very friendly, and the rooms are clean and has an old world feel. I am with a tour group and a tour guide is Alan Chou. He speaks very well of this hotel and this city and made excellent recommendations for dining in Grand Hai Lai for those who did not want to venture out. I would definitely stay in this hotel again. After spraining my ankle I have had to ask every hotel we visit if they can bring me ice. The staff here showed sincere concern and refused to except a tip. Little things like that can make someone feel that they are being well taken care of. Would definitely recommend to friends!

Yelp
Stayed here 1 night. Very nice and very comfortable hotel with great views of the harbor. An old hotel but very well maintained. Rooms are on the small side but they are perfectly decorated and they have a nice warm feel. I would definitely come back. And also....surprising that it's not mentioned in the other reviews, but the hotel is attached to a really big upscale mall and so easy to do all your shopping (and just outside the hotel are several streets with small boutique cloth stores and upscale restaurants).

Yelp
Always a pleasure to be here. It may be older now, but it's very convenient. Noticed there has been lots of foreigners lately. Makes me very proud that this city is finally recognized.

Yelp
I was here for meetings. The meeting room was prearranged by other people and rather overdone for our needs. The hotel worked with me to have a more appropriate meeting place and at a better price. The service top to bottom was excellent. The room was exemplary. I didn't have that many needs, but every time I had an inquiry, it was solved promptly and cheerfully. I have to especially commend the lovely people in the 40th floor executive club, led by Xenia but really including everyone, who went above and beyond in making sure every possible need, and more, was being met. I really cannot compliment them enough. I hope that my travels bring me back here another day. This is a wonderful property.

Yelp
I have stayed here twice now, both times booked by companies I am visiting who ridiculously believe that Americans must stay in big, marble floor behemoths and have ungodly amounts of food at buffets, or they will go back to the U.S. and petition for America to stop sending weapons and money to support Taiwan in its almost incomprehensible post-WWII struggle with China that every businessperson on either side of the straits violates just about every day because they secretly love each other as countries, but neither wants to admit it, which is kind of like watching Bruce Willis & Cybill Sheppard on Moonlighting have this love/hate, will he/she or won't he/she kind of thing, except we are talking about two countries who both have a nuclear weapon. OK, so maybe not the same thing. But, anyhoo.... The Grand Hi-Lai is very good, and at least for now, because of the strength of the dollar and existence of travel sites like Expedia, etc., you can get a great deal to stay here in a very central part of Kaohsiung. I am sure there are nicer hotels that also may be more hip (is that even a word anymore...sorry Urban Dictionary). The breakfast buffet is pure comedy, like a Chinese version of the kiddush after the Berkowitz bar mitzvah at the Roslyn Jewish Center as the old yentas push, scratch and claw to get that precious morsel of pound cake. You can safely stay here, and definitely enjoy it. I would explore other options if you are looking for a real experience as this one is too safe..unless that is what you are looking for. Mazel tov, Jaime Berkowitz. Now, you are a man !

Yelp
I stayed there from June 9 to June 14, the 1st day I checked in, I smelled odor at certain area of the room , but I did not say anything, 2nd day I complained to the front desk, they claimed they cleaned the room and left an air filter machine or a air freshener in the room, 3rd day I felt itchy on my leg, 4th day I realized I had bugs bites all over my legs and elbows, I showed to one of the manager, she had their driver took me to their assigned skin Doctor, It only took that Dr. 30 sec. to tell me it was Eczema, I trusted the Dr, then the next day I went to another city and it got worse, I googled found out it was bug bites , and I never had Eczema before, it made me think that Dr. work with the hotel so hotel would not be liable for it, I started to call them to complain, I had called 4 ,5 times, they always told me they would email me or called me, they never did, I emailed them with the pics of my bites, I emailed them 3,4 times. each time I waited 4 , 5 days got a reply, I was very upset, asked for 2 1/2 days refund to cover my discomfort and medical bill, they only offered me one day free next time when I come back, I told them I don't think I would ever come back to Kaohsiung again and even I do I won't stay at that hotel again. I had nothing to against that hotel, everything was good excepted the way the management treated me, 1. the managers did not know how to handle my case, finally replied was 3,4 days after, they were too slow to do damage control. 2. the management did not know how customers feel and think, they are all cold blooded. 3. If you had bad food at a restaurant then had Diarrhea for few days, even they offered you free meals for 3 days ,will you go back ? no ! I told them , 4 days later, the email said free stay next time, the same......I gave up!

Yelp
Hotel is so-so. Only stayed one night. Felt very itchy while laying in the bed. Staff is courteous.
