San Diego’s Best Barbecue Restaurants | Eater San Diego

"The original North Park outpost still slings Texas barbecue from its outdoor corner spot decked out with picnic tables and huge smoker and grill. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., Grand Ole has established itself as one of the city’s highly regarded smoked meat dining destinations offering tri-tip, spare ribs, hot links, and more at lunch and dinner (at least until they sell out). Sundays are reserved for Argentine-style barbecue delicacies like chorizo sandwiches, skirt steak, and blood sausage. Visitors will be able to place orders online by the end of this month or by calling." - Paolo Bicchieri

Peek Inside East County’s New Barbecue Wonderland - Eater San Diego

"A barbecue-based dining and entertainment venue of epic proportions is gearing up for a mid-September debut in East County. Located just a 20-minute drive from downtown San Diego in the Flinn Springs community of El Cajon, North Park’s popular Grand Ole BBQ has a new 15,000-square-foot domain. With the backing of hospitality group Social Syndicate (The Local, Wonderland Ocean Pub, The Rabbit Hole), local pitmaster Andy Harris, who founded the original Grand Ole BBQ y Asado, has built his dream come true, transforming a former biker bar into a family-friendly space to showcase his Central Texas barbecue, which ranges from the house specialty brisket to smoked turkey breast and hot links. Calling it “the biggest smokehouse west of Texas”, Harris and his crew will continuously run a suite of smokers and grills to feed the nearly 400-seat venue, which spans a dining room and cocktail bar designed with mid-century modern elements, including a 1960s jukebox and vintage pinball games, and a sprawling backyard stacked with picnic tables, firepits, and its very own live music stage. Harris, who worked in the music industry before getting into food, will be booking everything from classic country acts to folk musicians every weekend. Besides barbecue, the restaurant will serve a full lunch and dinner menu that includes prime steaks, flattop-grilled burgers, house-smoked salmon, salads, and more. The kitchen, led by Ami Cisneros (JRDN, Pacific Standard Coastal Kitchen) will also cook up bar snacks, ranging from Frito Pie to smoked bone marrow, as well as weekend brunch plates including brisket tacos and biscuits and gravy. Cisneros will also oversee an in-house bakery, which will create a variety of pies to be served with homemade ice cream." - Candice Woo

Google
Good quality BBQ served in a relaxed outdoor setting where you have to fend off flies. You order from a window, find a spot among regular or community tables to sit, and they buzz your pager when your food is ready. The staff were friendly and the wait was short. We liked the fact that you can order meats by the quarter pound. The brisket was more tender than the lamb shoulder as expected. We also liked that they were both very light in taste so you can choose from the 5-6 types of BBQ sauces they offer, or just salt and pepper if you prefer. There were enough flies to force everyone focus on his food all the time, but we eventually failed and the flies landed on our meat. What a shame.

Google
This was our first time at Grand Ole. The food was certainly not a disappointment! We had the tri tip & the brisket sandwiches. Both were tender and flavorful. My husband had the white beans as a side & liked them. I had the mac & cheese for my side. It was just standard mac & cheese...nothing great, just okay. Beer selection was good! Staff were helpful & the place was clean. We'll be back.

Google
This is probably the best BBQ place we’ve found in San Diego! Everything is delicious, but our favorites include the brisket, beef rib, and nachos (add brisket to the nachos). The portions are very healthy - most items can be split between two people (especially the nachos). The fried pickles are also very good. They have two traditional sauces - regular and spicy. We prefer to mix the two (the spicy is not too hot). Be sure to get there earlier on the weekend - some meats sell out. They do not have fountain sodas, but do have bottled sodas. They also have great desserts - like dole whip! The bar also has a rotating selection of taps with plenty to choose from.

This spacious, open-air restaurant is perfect for warm summer nights. With plenty of seating and ample space for kids to run around, it’s a great spot for families and large groups. The food is delicious, and portions are generous—so come hungry! I do wish the brisket had a smokier, saltier flavor, but nothing a salt shaker can’t fix. Overall, highly recommended for a casual and enjoyable dining experience.

Google
Ordered the fatty brisket and original slaw. The brisket had a great peppery crust but was mostly dry, with only a few fatty bites, too lean for my taste. The slaw was crunchy and flavorful with a citrusy twist, though a bit too sweet. Overall, I’d stop by again, but I’m more likely to keep exploring other BBQ spots first.

Google
My only complaint was the ribs over season with black pepper so much you can barely taste the rib the pulled pork was amazing. The brisket was amazing. The nachos tasted awesome and also the chili was good but the ribs were a big disappointment

Google
Surprised to find excellent, quality delicious BBQ in California. I highly recommend this place. Great atmosphere with excellent fast service and great BBQ meats and side items.

Google
Pretty good BBQ overall, worth a trip if you're craving some BBQ. Meat Highlight was the pulled pork and beef ribs, but we actually liked the slaw, beans, and beer better than all of the meat. Service was quick and helpful, and the meeting was cool. Good vibes all around

Yelp
The brisket and sandwich was so tender and flavorful. I could only eat half of the plate and ended up having leftovers for lunch the next day! I highly recommend this place to those that want good bbq.

Yelp
Walk up and order kind of place. The Brisket sandwich was LOADED with meat. Even had a whole half leftover because of how much meat is on it. The Turkey Sandwich was tasty and also well proportioned. You must have the chili bowl, so flavorful, went so well with their fries. Mac and cheese was also another item we enjoyed. They have different types of BBQ sauces you can choose from. They have plenty of beer selections and non alcoholic drinks as well. There's outdoor/patio seating so you can bring your fury friend. Service is prompt and courteous. We may have found our favorite BBQ place in SD.

Yelp
Came on a Friday afternoon and there was no line at all which was awesome. We wanted to try a little bit of several things so we got a small assortment of beef ribs, pork ribs, brisket, and sausage. For the sides we went with fries and Mac and cheese. Favorites were the brisket and pork ribs for me. So tender, juicy, and delicious. I would skip the sausage next time. The beef rib was also tasty but I think I like the pork more. I would skip the fries but definitely get the Mac and cheese. We were also able to taste all the different BBQ sauces. My favorites were the vinegar one and the spicy one. Looks like they have some nice happy hour deals too. There were some flies coming for the food so it was nice they had little spinning fly fan deterrents for each table.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday around 4pm and it wasn't too busy. You place your order for your food at one of the windows, and if you want a drink/dole whip, you order that at the bar. What we got: - Pulled pork Philly: they were really generous with the meat portion, which was great. I do wish it was a little more flavorful, but the bbq sauce on the side helped. - Brisket: My favorite thing we got, tender, juicy, flavorful! - Cole slaw: good, solid side. - Potato Salad: this was ok. I personally wasn't the biggest fan. - Dole Whip: refreshing and yummy! Overall, this spot is pretty solid. A little on the pricey side, as my friend pointed out that he paid about $40 for his food. There is an open indoor seating that leads to the main outdoor seating. The seating by the bar area was cute and casual. Also, keep in mind that it is street parking only.

Yelp
Holy crap, what an amazing meal- I now know why Grand Old BBQ is world-renown. They treat you well AND deliver fabulous BBQ. My friend lives in the neighborhood and loves to eat here, so of course I go with her suggestion. The one (scary) thing is that they sometimes run out of meat for the day so the menu at open may not be the same as at close.. case in point by the time I arrived for dinner there was pulled pork and a few ribs left but no brisket. It's counter service only- you order with one of their nice cashiers, they call your name when your food is ready. Beer is counter service as well from their bar... as is Dole Whip! They have a full bar but what really shines is their craft beer selection. There's really no words to accurately describe how tasty, amazing this meal was. The ribs are good even without sauce... or use them as a utensil for the mac n cheese. The cashier suggested I go with the Texas BBQ for my pulled pork for which I'm grateful- the other one was good but not my favorite. I can't really eat dairy anymore but the slight uncomfortableness was worth every bite. I tried to join the clean plate club but I think my eyes were bigger than my mouth. :P Definitely include this spot for a meal if you can swing it on a trip and have some time to wait in line.

Yelp
Grand Ole BBQ Y Asado is a pretty good spot in San Diego specializing in Texas BBQ although I think they had sauces from other regions (e.g. Carolina). They have a big patio aread. You go to the service window to place your order. When I went, a bunch of items had run out already (it was 7pm), like ribs or tri tip. Ordering of meats is by the pound which can be pricy but it was pretty good quality. - I ordered 1lb of hot links (2 pieces) - a brisket borarcha (some meat with mash potatoes and onions) - a side of fries - a side of spicy slaw - a side of potato salad The bill was a little more than $30 per person, there were two of us. We probably could've enjoyed ourselves while ordering so much, but it was all pretty tasty. They have assortment of different bbq sauces, vinegars, mustards and hot sauces to choose from. They had a section/bar area for drinks and dessert and were too stuffed to get more.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. I definitely recommend sitting outside. There's a slight funk inside even though it's fully open. Didn't bother me at all where I was sitting. It was Absolutely packed tonight. I had the pastrami sandwich made Ruben style. 10/10!

Yelp
Have lived in University Heights for 7 years and have always meant to try this spot out, but it kept escaping me. I'm aware that the outward appearance may have changed slightly over the years, but I still wanted to try it out. Finally got to and was not disappointed. The exterior patio seating area is well spaced out and comfortable for various party sizes. They have interior seating with a bar top that also looked cozy, so I want to try out the drinks next time. Ordering was very easy and straight forward, and they give you a buzzer to alert you when to pick up your food. Brisket was tender and and with the spicy bbq sauce added...I could go for some more right now. The fries were just OK in my opinion, not bad, just OK. The Mac and cheese on the other hand...not sure what it was, but I am definitely ordering that again. Will 100% be going back to try the other options on the menu.

Yelp
4.5 stars Came on a Sunday to try their Argentinian style BBQ or rather grilled meats. They usually only have smoked BBQ meats but on Sundays they have an Argentine style which is unique, meats grilled over charcoal. I tried their smoked pork spare ribs, smoked brisket and the Tira De Asado (grilled beef ribs) The beef ribs were cut across the bone they way that you get Korean short ribs but thicker maybe a half inch or so. They were very smoky from being cooked over charcoal but I feel like it was something that I could come close to on my own at home. I would have preferred the regular smoked beef ribs. The brisket had a beautiful smoke ring, the parts that were covered in fat were very juicy and tender. The parts that had less fat weren't as juicy but still good. I loved the fatty parts, I guess that's a preference, my friend says he doesn't like paying for fat, I disagree, if it makes is juicy and tender make sure mine has lots of fat! I also loved the crusty smoked and heavily seasoned fat on the exterior of it. The pork spare ribs looked dry, but when I bit into it, it was super tender and moist! Guess you cant judge a book by its cover. It was my favorite of the 3 meats. Super tender and flavorful. I came as they opened and there was almost no wait and easily found parking. I stood in line to order, they gave me a buzzer and picked it up at the window when it was ready. Theres lots of open seating and a covered bar area if you want drinks too. I really enjoyed the Bbq here, I'll be back to try the smoked beef ribs for sure!

Yelp
Grand Ole BBQ closest thing to Texas BBQ. Great Ambience, BBQ and great service. Great options for vegan too. Family friendly, animal friendly! Booth seating for date night. If you're a fan dole whip, they have it.

Yelp
We've been here twice now. We always try to come earlier in the day because it gets busy pretty soon after opening! We've tried the ribs, the brisket and the sausage. The brisket and the sausage are our favorite meats. We usually get the spicy, sweet and range life sauces which we love. We've found the ribs to be a little tough to eat. Among the sides, we love the spicy slaw, the potato salad and the peruvian white bean salad. On our most recent visit, we got the French fries with the Texas chili and those were out of the world! Definitely getting those again. The ambiance is casual and pretty much everyone here is coming for a good time. Parking the neighborhood is an issue as there is mainly street parking. They have beer, seltzers, and a couple of cider options. Come here for the meats. It is totally worth it. We live in North County but it is totally worth driving down here to have this food.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday around 5 pm after a long day at the Zoo. There's only street parking, which seems a little tight. But there are definitely spots around the neighborhood if you're willing to walk! We decided to get a pound of brisket, a pound of the link, and a pound of ribs. We ordered 2 sides of fries, 2 Mac and cheese, and 1 spicy coleslaw. I also got a cup of chili. The employee helping us recommended the Texas ranch style bbq so we got that, the sweet bbq, and the spicy bbq. We also got pickles and white bread. The ambiance is super casual and lively. The outdoor seating holds large groups and the dim bar is open to the patio. There were plenty of TVs with sport channels on. The bathrooms have the fancy Japanese toilets with heated seats and bidets as well. The bbq was pretty good! Not the best we'd ever had (our group is from Texas) but it easily satisfied us all. The brisket was soft and juicy, the ribs were cooked well, but the sausage was my favorite. Super packed with flavor and had a great snap. The chili was good and very meaty, but a tad salty. I ate it with the coleslaw and white bread which helped. The fries were super crispy and everyone liked the Mac and cheese! The bbq sauces were good as well and so were the pickles. I loved how the pickles were more on the sweet side but no one else in the group liked them as much because they don't like sweet pickles. Reminded us of Texas! Would come again.

Yelp
I stopped by Grand Ole BBQ because it had been recommended by a few friends. I was surprised when I arrived on a Saturday at 12:00 p.m. to see that there wasn't a line and that every item was still available. Prices here are pretty standard for BBQ meats and sides are on par as well. Between my party of six, we got a pound of brisket, one beef rib, half a pound of tri tip, and sides of slaw, macaroni salad and their fries topped with chopped brisket, Fritos and cheese sauce. The food here is rich and you'll want to take a nap immediately afterwards. The brisket is balanced between its fattiness and lean parts. The tri tip eats a little dry because it is slightly over but it goes well with the chimichurri sauce. The beef rib is perfectly marbled and is the best seasoned and my favorite item amongst the proteins. Sides are excellent as well. The slaw is not overly dressed, the noodles in the macaroni are not overcooked and the loaded fries have a wonderful contrast of different textures. I would stop by again if I'm craving BBQ in San Diego.

Yelp
It was our second time coming here and wanted to get brisket again and try the smash burger. Pretty busy on a Friday night. I love the layout bc it's mostly outdoor seating. It's been super hot so sitting outdoors is nice with the breeze. We ordered the brisket & smash burger with some sides. Brisket that day did not hit. It was very dry that I had to use the sauces a lot to moisten it up. Our first time there, the brisket was juicy and tender. The smash burger was surprisingly good. Lots of onions and a hint of bbq. I enjoyed it plus the fries were really good & crispy. Green beans were alright I felt like it needed to be cooked a bit more. Mac & cheese was pretty standard and I liked it. Overall, looks like it might be a hit or miss with this place. I like majority of the food but the meat can be inconsistent. I don't want to depend on bbq sauce to make the meat better.

Yelp
Lookin for a good barbecue spot aside from Phil's BBQ. This one popped up. AMBIANCE: Parking: Street parking. It can get busy so plan accordingly. Seating: Inside and patio parking. Great for groups. It seems to have about 100 for capacity Vibes: This is in the North Park area. Thus, it's crowded and eventful, and parking can be competitive. The spot itself is pretty neat - spacious with a little vintage Western - Cowboy look. Great place for big events, celebrations, or if you're tying to catch a game. FOOD: Broiled ShortRibs - Borracho style(Recommend) I was sad that they don't smoke ribs on Sunday but this was still pretty good. Juicy, savory, and right off-the-bone type of barbecue. Smother that beef with some sauce and you're in for a treat. Now the borracho is like grits or a tamale, a base of polenta (cornmeal) with cheese, onions, and peppers - relish and serrano. The borracho was an experience and made this dish extra fulfilling Potato Salad (Recommend) So many choices of sides but this stuck. I enjoyed the cold chunks of potatoes to help calm the flavors and clean your palate. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Great! Friendly people who were quick with the service. TL; DR OVERALL: 4 Stars. Deelish! Reasonable prices, good selections, and pleasant vibes. If you haven't been to Phil's BBQ then yet, try that out. However if you're looking for less of a mainstream yet creative flavor. This is your place. Enjoy! TIPS: * They don't do smoked ribs on Sunday * Borracho means drunk

Yelp
Brisket was really good, Tri tip was plain. Coleslaw was mediocre. Green beans tasted like lemon. Would def order diff sides next time. It was packed on a weekday at 5pm. Luckily no line and only a couple tables left. Inside bar: $5 for the smallest sideways dole whip. -1 star.

Yelp
Amazing chow and really rad vibes. Need better napkins though, the little thin, white ones don't quite cut it for the meat eating hands.

Yelp
It's ALWAYS A GAMBLE!!!! I've been here a few times, ordering different items and holing to get "the hype." I'll try one more time, because someone ordered and burger and some loaded fries that looked pretty good. DISLIKES: First, even though they close at 9pm, they run out of various items much earlier than their closing time. No one answers the phone, so calling ahead of time isn't an option. Today, I got there at 4pm and was told that they were out of the Mac & Cheese. As I'm packing up my food, I see someone sit down with Mac & Cheese. I went back up to the counter and was told that they made more. I said, "I wish I was told that more was being made." Now, I'm wondering how many times I've left this place because I WAS TOLD that they ran out of an item, opposed to "We're making more." Anyway, I wish that I hadn't spent $7.00 on such a small serving (it was to go). The sauce was extremely thick and left a weird film on my tongue. Also, the Beef Short Ribs (all out of the Smoked Ribs) was so tough, rare, and fatty-these were the worst Ribs I've ever eaten! The brisket was a thick piece of dry, flavorless meat, too. And, the string beans were hard! The GOOD: Well, I like the outside/backyard vibe! The Potato Salad and BBQ sauces are pretty good, too.

Yelp
Absolutely loved the experience my friends and I had here. Came 2 hours before closing and it was very relaxing to be here and chill out, even if you're not here to order food. But of course I was and I ordered a Tri-tip sandwich, a side of Mac n Cheese, and El Boracho Fries. Oh yeah and a glass Dr Pepper. Jazmin took my order and was very professional behind the counter. I was new to ordering on the menu so she gave me a tour around the menu and also threw out some recommendations on what BBQ sauces she liked-- she recommended the Sweet and Spicy. Regarding the food, I've never had Texas-style BBQ, or any sort of BBQ like this-- so this whole thing was a first time experience. Pretty steep in pricing, but later on I'll say why it was worth it. 60 bucks for everything. Waiting time wasn't that long, probably like 4-5 minutes. And wow, was it great. The Tri-tip was seriously and illegally tender. It had so much flavor to it, and with Jazmin's recommendation of Sweet and Spicy added to it, it made it even more bolder in flavor. It was a perfectly cooked and well-done sandwich. The Mac n Cheese was cheesing-- it was really flavorful like it should be, and the pasta was perfectly cooked. The El Boracho fries were something new-- never had grits before, let alone in fries but I decided to shower it in some BBQ sauce and it was really good. Much different experience from typical Carnesada fries I'm used to in my area but, just because it's different doesn't mean it's bad-- it was amazing. If my friends and I want to hangout and just kickback, eat food, I think I'll know what I'd be recommending. Thank you Grand Ole for the service, thank you Jazmin for the reccomendations. I really enjoyed my time here. 5/5.

Yelp
I've been smoking meats for a few years now and I'd consider Grand Ole BBQ of the best barbecue spots in San Diego! This is the only bbq spot I will go to if ever I'm too lazy to do it myself. I ordered Brisket and the big Dino Beef Rib. You GOTTA get one of your meats EL BURRACHO style, which is a cream sauce with frito puree. It was so good, I had them host of my company luncheons for 50 people. I ordered by emailing Andy, who was kinda hard to get a hold of. Once we responded, we were rolling right along. He recommended what to order, which was 14lbs brisket, 12lbs pulled pork, potato salad, slaw, and Hawaiian rolls. They let me pick everything up before they opened to the public (and there was already a small line forming lol) and Andy helped me load up my car. It was plenty food for my luncheon and I received lots of praise for it (and the food of course)!

Yelp
If you're looking to stuff your belly full for about $20, this is the place to do so. I ordered the California brisket burrito. Wowwowweeewow, it was the size of a dinosaur egg! The thing weighed like 3 pounds and i could barely wrap my hand, actually 2 hand around it, it was a thick one. Usually when you have french fries inside a burrito, flavor gets covered by its starchy texture and dry taste, most the times you would have to drench it in some kind of sauce to make it edible, BUT this was not that, the soft juicy tenderness of the brisket meat made up everything, I know ive enjoyed a good burrito, when i can just bite into it and have a good flavor and texture profile without adding a bunch of sauce. The addition of adding their BBQ sauces, i tried 1 of each, made the burrito more joyful to eat, although i still enjoyed it the way it was plain, to each their own.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch when arriving in SD. Tri tip- No complaints, comes with chimi. Brisket-well seasoned, fat was rendered really well. Just a little dry, but not enough to disappoint. Turkey-I only got this because a local in line said it was killer, he was right, very moist and tender. I'm not a big turkey fan, but this did not disappoint. St Lous ribs-these were good, they were small like baby back, but also ate like baby backs so I wasn't mad. Again , Just a little dry, but not enough to disappoint. Red chili-great meat chili, we both dug it. Sides, potato salad and baked beans were both tasty, portion is pretty hefty too. Overall, we got out at $55 and could have fed 3 people with sides left over or 4 people that aren't big eaters. Pretty great deal at less than $20 a person. I do have to say I'm somewhat easily impressed as my city is a wasteland of BBQ, so if you're a connoisseur it may be less impressive. Having said all that, we'd be stoked to have a BBQ joint like this in our area.

Yelp
I just love this place and sooo excited it's located in South Park as the only one I have ever been to is the one in Flynn Springs.. it's located on the corner and you should definitely Uber in if you don't live in the neighborhood because parking can be difficult... the meat is priced by the pound. We ordered the tri-tip and the brisket, which was amazing along with macaroni cheese and potato salad, and green beans..... it's mostly outdoors, but they have a bar area with some seating kind of inside... I love the way it's decorated across the country inside of a haunted mansion at Disneyland.. they even have a door whip and you can make that a mimosa if you want.. this might be one of my favorite barbecue places in San Diego... the food is great.... The service consist of ordering from a window and they'll call you to pick up your food. Same with the bar nothing more nothing less simple and easy. You have to try this place if you have not !

Yelp
Love the flavors and the great options at this BBQ spot! The ambiance is super fun, feels like a spot you would go in Austin. Everyone is super nice, and there are tons of beer options. We've been coming here for a while, and it's always amazing. Recently, we got the brisket sandwich and the smash burger to share - both were fantastic. Highly recommend!

Yelp
solid spot! been looking for a good barbecue spot in san diego! We ordered pulled pork and brisket wish we got tri tip but it was sold out, Pork was tough and a bit dry but the brisket was fire. Sides were 10/10 loved the mac and cheese, potato salad, and obsessed with the spicy slaw. I like that the bar is next door for cocktails and the staff was great! pro tip try all the sauces and ask for a side of jalapenos and pickles

Yelp
We have a good selection of BBQ spots here in San Diego, but not all of them have true Texas-style BBQ. Grand Ole BBQ Y Asado definitely has their craft down though! - PARKING - Street parking only, so be ready to circle around the neighboring roads for a spot! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - Outdoor seating and 'indoor' seating is available. There are benches outside that can seat 4-8 people comfortably, and the 'indoor' seating is moreso an open air area where there are booths and bar seating. We came near 5pm on a Wednesday and there was no line - our main concern was missing out on the Beef Ribs, which we checked for availability first. There were only 5 ribs left so we snagged one! Once you order, they give you a buzzer that will ring when your food is ready for pickup. Staff is very attentive, the minute we finished eating, a staff member came by to pick up our trays and trash. - FOOD - Beef Rib (1lb - $34.00): The meat literally fell off the bone! There were some parts that were tougher, but overall the meat on this was tender and juicy. Brisket (1lb - $31.00): We always like to try the lean and fatty parts of the brisket, but in my opinion I would stick to the fatty side for this spot. The lean brisket just was a tad too dry and tough for me. Turkey (1/2 lb - $15.50): Turkey isn't always great, but GOBYA does it right! Super flavorful and not try at all! Tri-Tip (1/2 lb - $16.00): I was more enticed by the chimichurri sauce that came along with the meat, and my intuition was right. The sauce was delicious, but some parts of the Tri-Tip were a bit too tough and chewy for me. Hot Link ($13.00): Not the snappiest nor most flavorful link I've had at a BBQ spot, but still good! Fries ($5.00): Crispy and had some light seasoning on top. Nice little side to have alongside all the meat. Red Chili (cup - $9.00): This was just OK for me - I think I'd go for the mac and cheese over any of the other sides next time. - OVERALL - Great service, good food, awesome environment. I do have a different favorite BBQ spot reigning on top still!

Yelp
First time getting bbq in San Diego and I was really satisfied! They had a great selection of food on their menu. We ordered the brisket, lamb shoulder sandwich, blood sausage, Texas hot link, Mac n cheese, spicy slaw, and beans. The meat that stood out for me was the brisket, and my favorite side dish was the Mac n cheese. It was sightly al dente which I enjoyed. The brisket was nice and tender, and their spicy bbq sauce went great with it. The beans were a little on the salty side, but some of the other sides weren't as salty so it went well together. I also ordered a dole whip mimosa. First time getting one of those! It was like a combination of my adulthood and inner child mixed together. Lots of seating outside and inside by the bar. There is a lot of space so it is a great location for big groups or families. Service was also nice and efficient!

Yelp
The best BBQ in San Diego! There is generally a line so we try to go right when the restaurant opens. The moment you step inside, that smoky aroma takes over, making your mouth water. The ribs? Insanely delicious - fall-off-the-bone goodness! And don't even get me started on the brisket - it's like a slice of heaven. The vibe is chill, the portions are generous, and the sauces? Oh boy, they've got this range that amps up the taste. I particularly love the spicy sauce. It's the perfect spot for BBQ lovers looking for a finger-lickin' good time!

Yelp
- lots of open air seating, with more seating indoors near the bar - street parking around the neighborhoods - loved the tender tri tip! so yummy with the chimichurri that also paired well with the other meats - fries were also so good - fried to perfection with bubble crisps on the outside

Yelp
Best Texas-style BBQ in San Diego! I've tried other bbq places around here and GOBYA is by far my favorite. Service/Ambiance: Our party of 4 went at 5pm on a Wednesday and there was no line to order at all, though I hear this place gets jam-packed over the weekends. Once you enter, you order at the cashier in the back corner and they call when your order is ready. It was my first time here and the lady up front was patient and helpful with my questions, and offered food/size suggestions. Food came out very quickly. Plenty of benches outside that could seat 6 to 8 people, maybe even 10 in some tables. The "indoor" section has tables, benches, booths, and seats at the bar. The whole place gives you a laid-back, barbecue with friends kind of ambiance. Parking: Street parking only but our party got lucky with multiple spots open close by. Food: Price listed is per pound for all meats and you can opt to make it a sandwich. There's a kids menu, bar food options, and even vegan options. You can choose from different sauces ranging from sweet to spicy (though the spicy wasn't really that spicy for me but still had good flavor). My husband and I shared this order and it was the perfect amount for us. -1/2 lb brisket ($15.50): MUST GET. They serve half fatty and half lean and it's the perfect amount of each. Sooo tender and juicy! -1/4 lb turkey ($7.75): surprisingly very good! Thin cuts of turkey served with lots of flavor. -3/4 lb beef rib ($25.50): fall-off-the-bone good. We were lucky that there were still some left for us to order! -1/4 lb tri tip ($8): a little chewier, it was just okay for me but my husband liked the flavor. Served with their chimichurri sauce. -Green beans: I asked for recs for popular sides and it was between this and Mac and Cheese. These were just ehhh for me, I would get Mac and cheese next time. Overall, I'm so glad we finally found a good Texas-style barbecue joint here in San Diego! There were other things offered that I would love to try next time. I'd also want to try out their happy hour from 3pm-5pm during the weekdays.

Yelp
Delicious! This place has been on my list for a while and it did not disappoint. The tri tip sandwich and brisket sandwich were delicious! The meat was so tender. Potato salad was a winner. Green beans were too salty. Plain fries were another hit! The loaded fries were too much for me... plus they have a great drink menu. Sauces were underwhelming - they had a strong vinegar taste. However, the sandwich didn't need any more sauce! Beyond delicious as is. Also, I haven't found a restaurant to serve Not Your Fathers Root Beer until now! Service was polite, friendly, and prompt. This restaurant is family friendly. It's a great, casual, atmosphere that offers both indoor and outdoor seating. There are heaters, fun old school music playing in the faint background, and fun Disney references sprinkled in the decor! I'll be back :)

Yelp
Brisket heaven! But what the eff is up with the potato salad??? I'm been a huge fan of GOBYA ever since they opened. I've recommended them time and time again, and for good reason. They've got some stellar fatty brisket and some delicious beef ribs; I'd say most of their meats are pretty dang good. I used to really like their sausages, but lately they haven't been as good as they used to be. They used to do smoked pork chops on occasion, but I haven't seen them since prior to their remodeling. If you do ever see the pork chops, I'd highly recommend getting at least one. Since they serve meats by the pound, I typically just order the meats to-go (be sure to ask for white bread, pickles, and jalapenos), and prepare my own sides, often mac and cheese and collards, at home. As the meats are pretty pricey, making sides at home is a great way to save some scrilla. Yeahhhh. Since my boy was back in town, and GOBYA was one of his must haves, it was going to be a dine-in experience. Everything was going according to plan, the fatty brisket looked superb, until I looked at the potato salad... What in the hell???...why does it look like somebody already chewed it for me??? It was odd. It appeared that they made a batch of semi-chunky potato salad, split the batch in half, pureed one half, and then dumped it back in with the rest of the semi-chunky. It was almost like potato salad, with potato salad dressing. It looked foul, obviously had a strange texture, but luckily it tasted ok. Definitely not the potato salad I remember getting from here. The people are pretty friendly, the food is tasty, and it's definitely the best brisket I've had in SD. Can't wait to try the dole whip mimosas! Thanks for some delicious fatty brisket!

Yelp
Waited 20 minutes at a table for our server who never appeared as we watched 10 different staff members go by and not look at our table. We left and went to another restaurant. Then my in-laws stopped by later that afternoon and the same thing happened to them! Even my grandmother in law with over 50 years as a waitress and bartender was aggravated! Service is slipping.

Yelp
Part of San Diego establishment, Grand Ole BBQ Y Asado stands as a go to place for Texas-style barbecue aficionados. Often overshadowed by the more well-known Phil's BBQ, this gem offers a superior taste that truly sets it apart. My visit over the Memorial weekend was a delightful surprise - the place was comfortably uncrowded, allowing for a serene dining experience. Service was swift; our food arrived promptly, defying the usual holiday wait times. The menu was a carnivore's dream. We indulged in smoked tri-tip, slow-cooked beef brisket, short ribs, mac n' cheese, and garlic fries. Each dish was a testament to the culinary prowess of the pitmasters. The smoked beef brisket was the star of the show - tender, brimming with flavor, and a perfect showcase of the low and slow cooking philosophy. The BBQ sauce deserves a special mention. Available in both spicy and mild, it complemented the meats without overpowering their natural flavors. It's a rare find that caters to all palates. Parking can be a challenge, but with a bit of luck, street parking is ample. The staff's efficiency and friendliness added to the overall positive experience. And when it comes to value, Grand Ole BBQ Y Asado hits the sweet spot. For a group of four, feasting on a hearty meal accompanied by beer and soda, the bill stood at a reasonable $100. In conclusion, Grand Ole BBQ Y Asado is a must-visit for those seeking authentic Texas-style BBQ. It's a welcome escape from the long lines at Phil's, without any compromise on taste or quality. A true culinary triumph in San Diego's BBQ scene.

Yelp
Grand Ole BBQ is delicious! Not only is the food great, but the restaurant itself is amazing for a simple date night or a big group. Since you order at the counter and then find a seat, it makes for a good spot to meet up with a friend group of any size. I was shocked by how fast our food came out. There was a bit of a line when we got there, but it moved super fast. The place was busy for a rainy night, but it still only took about 5 minutes for our food to arrive at our table. We got the Mac & cheese, a 1/2 lb of chopped brisket, and a 1/2 lb of the pulled pork. I would definitely order this again. The food was amazing, and we even had leftovers.

Yelp
Food was awesome for a quick I don't want to cook or smoke for 8 hours but want to eat it this is your spot. We got 1/2 a pound of all the meats, they were well seasoned, flavorful and juicy. I had to remove one star because of the 6 ribs I got; only two had some meat on them the other 4 were seasoned bones. Was disappointed about that. Service was fast and friendly we went on a Sunday afternoon and I was surprised at how fast we got put food. The ambiance was nice and calm not loud and was very comfortable for a family with the big tables.

Yelp
Top barbecue I've had in San Diego! Ordered the brisket and salmon ahumado, both were so good. I'd pass on the White Beans but Green Beans were a nice veggie addition. Mac and cheese has a sticky texture that i'm not a fan of but really enjoyed the Spicy Slaw so the 5 stars are well deserved. If you're looking for friendly service and a nice venue this is your spot!

Yelp
I visited a long time ago and then again recently. They reopened middle of last year. Street parking only. They have lots of seating in their outside patio. They have benches that can fit very large groups. It's incredibly difficult to get their beef ribs. I have not been able to get them, they sell out within an hour (or earlier) of opening. Not sure if it's due to the pre orders they do. I would recommend getting quarter lbs to try everything. I got 1/2 lb and regretted it. Tried: Link $14 - one link for this price. this was very pink on the inside, I was concerned whether it was cooked all the way. The skin was very tough to cut through. Flavor was just okay, not worth the price. Mustard saved it. Brisket - I got 1 lb of this and regretted it. $31. There was so much fat! Spare rib - 1/2 lb $14. This was good, chili rub. Had very little meat though, felt like I was just paying for bones. Pulled pork - 1/2 lb $14. This was good, not dry at all. The chimichurri sauce it came with went well. This works better as a sandwich. Tri tip - 1/2 lb $16. This was really tough. Wasn't a fan. I liked their bbq sauce and pickles. Friend liked the spicier bbq sauce. For the $100 I spent I wish I would have gone to kbbq instead.

Yelp
Food was excellent, but way too many flies. Somebody needs to get an electronic flyswatter and start swinging. The ambience was kind of gross. But the dinner was top-notch.

Yelp
Casual dinner date with my love, frankly he chose this spot and he chose right! This place reminds me of a family cookout with strangers, even considering coming back with a big group of people, heads up it's all street parking. Food choices were nachos and a juicy burger 9/10 the fries were to simp for me! The service was amazing surprisingly they were busy yet the order was coming out hot and on time! It's always enjoyable to eat your meal still fresh ! Definitely recommend

Yelp
This was my first time coming here and I was definitely impressed. The cashier and servers were all very friendly and sweet. I love the rustic outdoor vibe. During this time, the weather was perfect and they have the fans going so it didn't feel too stuffy. There is a bar inside that serves beer and ciders as well as the dole whip! There was also plenty of parking in the neighborhood close to the restaurant. Food review: Spare ribs: (5/5) The meat was super tender, seasoned to perfection, and had overall great flavor. You don't even need BBQ sauce for these. I'd definitely order these again. Tri-tip: (4/5) Though the meat was tender it didn't have much flavor. However, the chimichurri sauce helped bring out some flavor. Brisket: (3.5/5) The server said they're known for the brisket so we had to try it. Again, the brisket was smoked perfectly and super tender, but it lacked flavor and seasoning. It definitely needed some dipping sauce. Green beans: (3/5) They were over cooked, but they had decent flavor. I wouldn't order again. Potato salad: (3.5/5) This potato salad had pretty good flavor and wasn't too runny, like some I've tried. It wasn't anything special to me, but went well with the meats. Good portion. Mac and cheese: (4/5) Surprisingly, the Mac n cheese was pretty tasty. Noodles cooked to perfection and made with 3 different cheeses, I believe. I'd order again. It was a good portion. Dole whip: (5/5) Omg. So yummy! The server gave me a complimentary scoop to try and I'm so grateful. This was the bomb and perfect way to end lunch! Definitely recommend giving this a try! Oh oh! Don't forget to ask for white bread and pickles. The pickles were bombbbb!

Yelp
Brisket was the best. Tri-tip was a little chewy. Pulled pork was ok. The spicy BBQ sauce and chimichurri sauce were very good. We visited this restaurant around 12:30 on Saturday. Parking was tough! We had to circle around 3 times to find a ok street parking. The server was very nice.

Yelp
I'd argue this is the best BBQ in San Diego! A few reasons I love Grand Ole: 1. The food is fire!!! -Argentinian BBQ Sundays are delicious -You can't go wrong with any of their BBQ -A hidden favorite gem: their smash burger! It's one of the top burgers in San Diego. 2. Ambience They have such a cute spot. It's great for friends, families, and kiddos. The interior space has this cute retro vibe. 3. Sweet Treats They also have a ton of fun sweet treats including Dole Whip creations and root beer floats (even adult floats). I tried the Dole Whip mimosa which was fun and tasty.

Yelp
Food : good Service the cashier was nice, the guy handing out the food was rude. Ambiance loud My friend got a brisket sandwich with a side of fries. It looked so good I got one of my own. The line was long, but they had a few TVs around to help ease the waiting. I ordered the beef brisket sandwich. The lady that rung me up was nice. When picking up your food it's around the corner. There's one guy in the back yelling the numbers and then a guy handing out the food. I hear my number and the guy looks at me saying my number was not called. He then calls my number again and I pick it up. I had to ask for the bbq sauce on the side which he grabbed from a huge bucket not knowing if it was sweet or spicy. Anyway this is not a reflection of the whole business just one grumpy old man that shouldn't be working there. The sandwich was delicious the bread toasted just right and the brisket not too dry and good seasoning, my friend's fries were different and better than the ones I got, but the ones I got weren't bad.

Yelp
Nice to have good Bbq in town. Great food and great service. Try the brisket it juicy and tender.

Yelp
I've been meaning to write a review for this place and I still can't forget about their mac and cheese from here. My favorite bbq meats in order were the turkey, brisket and then the ribs. I've had bbq that gives a bit more in terms of flavor and smokiness but I would say Grand Ole Bbq does it right. They have a variety of sauces to choose from including a chimichurri. The bbq sauces were mainly on the sweeter side and the spiciest one was not spicy at all. Coleslaw also had a lot of seasoning and gave a little crunch. I felt like I was in a backyard patio for a cookout in a different part of town. There was a lot of seating for big groups and this place does get busy on weekends. I really enjoyed the BBQ and would say it is one of the better BBQ joints in San Diego as I've only had a few experiences eating it here.

Yelp
I was visiting San Diego and met up with my friend for lunch. I came to know about this place when I told him I planned to order Phil's BBQ back home for dinner. Phil's has been known as a tourist trap destination for BBQ in San Diego. Although I love Phil's, I was open to trying something new, including my friend's recommendation. The location of this restaurant is in a residential neighborhood where I had to street park several houses away. A wooden fence surrounds the restaurant, and upon entry, there is a line of a giant bbq smoker and a pit to the right. At the last pit, I can see that they were grilling SHORT RIBS where the grill is hanging high and the fat dripping down the hot coal from the heat. This is a long process, but they are serious about their trade. If you are a fan of Texas-style BBQ, then this is the place to be! There is a bonus if you're also a fan of Disney as there are hints of Disney-style arts, hidden Mickey Mouse logo, and their best-selling frozen treat. Inside the bar is the place to order your beer and beverages and their DOLE PINEAPPLE WHIP. I wonder if it's coincidence that if you put their name together without any spacing, the word 'dole' can be found. Whenever I'm in Disneyland, this REFRESHING and SWEET frozen treat is a must order, and I couldn't believe that they carried the exact dessert here. This whip is an EXCELLENT delicacy to break away from the heat. I ordered a pound of BEEF SHORT RIBS with their HOUSE BBQ SAUCE. The short ribs reminded me of a thick cut of Korean short ribs sliced between the bones. The taste of the meat was DELICIOUS. Comparing this meat to Phil's is like apples and oranges. For true Texas-style BBQ lovers, I see why people prefer this joint among others. I can see myself coming back and trying other selections. Their meat BLEW ME AWAY, and it felt like a hidden gem in San Diego as North Park is a local centric neighborhood.
