We visited this Chinese restaurant for dinner and tried a variety of authentic Cantonese dishes. There were five of us, and we ordered nine different items to sample. Everything was flavorful and delicious. My personal favorites were the steamed fish and duck. The fish was incredibly fresh and tender, with a soy sauce base and a hint of ginger. The duck was also very flavorful—slightly salty, but it paired perfectly with white rice. The vegetable dishes were equally impressive. Overall, if you’re looking for authentic Cantonese cuisine, this is definitely a place to try!

Authentic Chinese cuisine! Great original taste of food. Swift service. Not the cleanest place I have been to. Communications within the restaurant are mainly in Mandarin (or rarely in Cantonese). Their original menu is not printed in English. One suggestion: if you want to really really taste the best of their food, please come with your Chinese friends (who can read Mandarin) who will guide you through the various items on the menu! Visiting again for sure. Last thing, try their duck. It’s delicious!

I have visited Grand Palace for no less than 20 times - it’s hands down my favorite Chinese restaurant in Chicago. Perfect when you’re in the mood for home-cooked Cantonese food. The food is cheap and staff is super warm and welcoming! Some of my favorite dishes include the salt & pepper egg tofu, scrambled eggs w/ shrimp, pork belly w/ pepper, salted egg yolk squid, garlic pea shoots, and steamed fish!

No frills dinner at Mom’s house in this quaint family-run Chinese restaurant. She doesn’t plate on the grandest of tableware, but the dishes are made with a whole lot of heart and come out hot & mouthwatering. Will be back to explore more of the menu. 👍 salted egg fried shrimp: crispy, juicy shrimp seasoned w/ salted egg 👍 pork belly & peppers: high-heat stir fried w/ a nice chew. Okay, so far the best Cantonese style cuisine in the US.. not just Chicago. Must order: steamed egg, steam fish and duck. Good as always, but the soup the comes with the meal was not as good, so I am give a 4 star review. The fish this time is slightly too greasy but still the fish was fresh and tasted good!

Such an authentic Cantonese food place! Great price. Great taste! I came here 5 years ago when I was a student and I am so glad to see it survived the pandemic and still opens. Hope it will stay as long as possible :)

Home-style Cantonese food in old China town! Service are very quick (like many traditional canto restaurants, the owner is ready to take order as soon as you sit down.) Owners are very friendly (I brought my non-canto bf there and they care if we enjoy the food!) Food are very home style, price are reasonable. They have an English menu and a Chinese menu, but they are not perfectly translated, and the Chinese menu seems has more items. We ordered: - Five spice duck (五味鴨） (4/5) - Deep fried shrimp with salty egg yolk （金沙蝦球） (5/5) - Stir-fried pork belly with jalapeño （五花腩炒青椒）(5/5) - Stir-fried Pea tips with garlic （蒜蓉炒豆苗）(5/5) - Pepper chicken pork tripe soup （胡椒豬肚雞湯）(3.5/5)

Used to be my go to place for such a long time, once a week. Food: fresh and tasty home style food, I love their steamed everything, especially the solen, fish, egg. Service: the owner couple are always suggest you with the fresh ingredients, just like your parents trying to convince you eating some healthy food. Ambiance: cozy place which just like have a party at home in China.

Food is easily a 5/5 but the presentation and ambiance leaves something to be desired. There isn't enough parking in their own lot, but you can find street parking nearby. It's in a seedy area of town so you have to ring a doorbell to get in. That being said, I felt okay parking on the street during the day. The tea was served in styrofoam cups but I guess it's at least clean. The tables were covered in the type of paper you would lie down on in a doctor's office. Not the greatest place to bring a date, but it's good for a group outing.

I went to this restaurant this afternoon with my friend. We ordered three small plates, and the price was very reasonable. The service was so friendly! We enjoyed our time there so much!!!

We ordered eef short ribs (salt and pepper), shrimp fried rice, and chicken lo Mein. Very nice staff. Large portions even for the small dish. Short ribs were fantastic! Chicken Lo Mein was spicy and flavorful. Fried rice was OK. Definitely will come again. Limited seating. Felt bad for four large fish in the small fish tank.

Great homestyle Cantonese restaurant. Some dishes you can also ask for a small or large size portion. Menu in English is a pretty good translation of the Chinese. On our post-pandemic revisit we'd recommend: - shrimp in shell with preserved duck egg yolk - steamed egg (we went with triple egg) - steamed ground pork cake (went with preserved duck yolk on top) - Yam leaves (seasonal, was available) - backup would have been Chinese okra or on choy Meal began with a veggie broth soup (carrot heavy) which as was great in addition to hot tea (styro cups) on a winter day. Specialty drinks if desired are available from the fridge up front. Small parking lot, but free street parking around the corner.

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in chicago!! The food here is so delicious. Ordering take out won't be as good as eating inside and getting the food fresh. The inside doesn't look nice which why I call this place hole in the wall. The service is good though they don't speak a lot of English but you should be fine if you don't speak Chinese If you are a fan of Chinese food you HAVE TO COME HERE AND TRY

Love love love this place. Homestyle, authentic Chinese food. I highly recommend the stir fried pork belly with green onion and ginger--my mouth is watering just thinking about it. They also have excellent steamed egg, as well as roast duck with plum sauce. The lunch special during the weekdays is extremely affordable and comes with soup. Ambience is very traditional Chinese restaurant, with circular tables and lazy susans, with Chinese paintings on the walls, although I don't believe they have reopened for dine-in yet. There is a private lot for the restaurant to park in. I'm looking forward to when this restaurant opens for dine-in again!

My all time favorite Chinese restaurant in Chicago Very casual and family style. Affordable price too. I loved the duck and the 牛腩支竹煲. Loved the veggies too. There's plenty of free parking. The owner is so friendly and welcoming, always giving free pastries and soups to try

Hidden gem in Bridgerport and the best homestyle cantonese food in Chicago. Coming here with a native speaker will help since there are dishes on the Chinese menu. It's a small restaurant but has a homey vibe and the owners are wonderful and welcoming. My top dishes here are the lobster noodles, pork belly with peppers and steamed egg with minced pork. It's difficult to achieve a perfect egg custard but Grand Palace nails it every time, with silky and smooth texture. Everything is cooked to perfection, the flavors are on point and seasoning is well-balanced. Nothing is overly greasy or salty.

Favorite meal in all of Chicago. Ordered once a week during the pandemic to make sure they were still alive & kicking and to support them. The boss lady is a very loving & funny mother figure and the husband is in the kitchen fixing up the meals. Some of my favorite dishes: Braised Lamb with Bean Curd (5/5) - you can also get the beef, but I like the taste of lamb a bit more. The sauce is heavenly & the bean curd holds the sauce so perfectly. Pour this on some rice and I'm good to go Scrambled Eggs with Okra (5/5) - how the hell do you make eggs this good? This is actually a very "simple" dish with common ingredients, so how do they make this dish taste so good & why can't I recreate this taste at home? I've tried countless times and can't even get close. Guess I'll just have to keep ordering from them. Egg perfection. Salt & Pepper Japanese Round Tofu (5/5) - just some lightly fried tofu with salt and pepper. How do they do it? I can't figure it out, but this is truly a dish where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I have ordered takeout from this several times now during covid and this place always hits the spot. If I ever dine in, it'll be a great experience. Food (8.5/10): Some of my favorite dishes are the scrambled egg with winter melon and fried soft shell crab. Scrambled egg with Chinese okra - simple, clean and tasty dish. Gives a slight home cooked feel due to its simplicity. Even with the simplicity the flavor is still there. Fried soft shell crab - this is a crowd pleaser and also ordered by many of my fellow yelpers. The flavor from the powder on this dish helps put it over the top. I've ordered this dish every time. Value (6/10): Standard fair pricing during these times. I feel like you'll get more bang for your buck if you dine in due to takeout sizing. About $15-18 a dish.

One of the most authentic Chinese restaurants in Chi-town. From the taste of the food to the cosy family-style atmosphere with Cantonese dramas playing in the background on the TV. Steamed Egg with Minced Meat- Just the right amount of saltiness, the egg and minced meat go perfectly with a scoop of freshly cooked white rice. There are many other cooking styles of steamed egg you can also but for the meat lovers, this is the one to go for. Score of 5/5 Fried Intestines - For someone who usually dislikes the taste of intestines, this dish surprised me. The overwhelming taste of offals was pleasantly missing from this dish and the fried coating made it an enjoyable experience biting into the chewiness of the intestine. Score of 4/5 Beef with Fried Tofu - Glistering coated beef with an addition of fried tofu mixed into the dish. The beef was tender with the only downside being the portions were a bit on the small end. Score of 4/5 Pork Belly with Peppers - My favorite dish at Grand Palace. For a non-spicy eater, the spiciness was just nice (just avoid eating the green peppers themselves oh boy that was a mistake). The pork isn't too fatty and has great flavors imparted from the onions and peppers. Score of 5/5 The place also serves complimentary soup which defers from day to day and at times you even get some mandarin oranges at the end for dessert! It also only cost $15 (with tips included) per person which is a great deal for the amount of variety and quality of the food! The waitresses have a certain old-school charm that might rub some people the wrong way but after a few visits you will feel right at home as a regular.

This place is so good and authentic! The service is great, the waitresses are so sweet and welcoming! The price is also super reasonable and the food was delicious. We ordered the steamed chicken, which was a little tough but had great taste. We also got a dish with eggplant, pepper and tofu and it was delicious; the sauce was so tasty! Definitely will come here again and would recommend.

It's a old style Cantonese place. Stable food choices. Not the most updated place for sure. If you don't mind the decor & the old looks and family runs, give it a try. We order the five spices duck every time.

Best mom & pop shop that has the most home comforting food. I LOVE THIS PLACE. If you're looking for a hole in the wall this is the hidden gem for canto food. Parking is limited and so is limited table seatings. When ever I'm missing home or just want some good canto food, this is my go to spot. Make sure to ask if they have any specials for the day because it sometimes is off the menu item. So if you want real good canto food, this is the spot!

Mom and pop Chinese restaurant filled with Chinese patrons - the sign of a great authentic Chinese restaurant. Everything my table ordered was absolutely delicious: Peking duck, fish, eggplant, fried crab, Chinese broccoli, braised beef, steamed egg, etc. Highly recommend.

This place is unique in which it cooks family dishes, presentation is not good, but the type of food you would expect from the Chinese home dinner table. They can cook any Chinese Cantonese family dish that you can name. Place is traditional style, with no or little decoration. It looks a little dated. Service is sub-par. That's because they sell food, not service. Waitress, who's also the boss of this place, gets impatient if you can't place your order all at once. They have limited hands, I believe there's only 3-4 people working here, so they try to do things efficiently. Their lobster noodle, pork with pickled fish, clams, steam eggs are pretty good. Parking is limited, but you can park for free off street.

Talk about hidden gem. This place is amazing. Such a family vibe to it because of the family style you have while eating. Although seating is limited, the food here is amazing. Doesn't matter what dish you get, you'll leave full and happy. Because this is how I feel every time I leave this place. If you can, always try to call in advance to see what the seating situation is like. Especially for dinner, it gets super busy and although I never had to wait, I see people waiting for awhile till a table clears out. The pricing is so reasonable and affordable. The service is good as well. They always make you feel right at home and try to cater to your needs as best as they can. They give you soup in the beginning and dessert at the end. I always love going here for dinner.

Imagine this... Hole in the wall, ten tables, two fish tanks overcrowded with fat fish, TV with TVB on all day, and an owner who loves to talk. Doesn't sound like much but looks can be deceiving. My parents and I have been coming here for years and every time we come, the food has always been consistently good and there's always a crowd around dinner time any day of the week. In addition, the phone is constantly ringing off the hook with carry-out orders, so you know it's a local favorite. Our staples are usually tofu with pork belly, steamed egg with ground pork, black bean spare ribs, and a seasonal vegetable dish. Very traditional home-style Cantonese cooking. Reminds me of my mom's cooking without her having to actually bust her butt in the kitchen. They have parking in front but can be difficult to find parking during their busy hours. We had a car parked in front of us when we came out the other night but the owner was quick to ask around and have it moved. When it gets busy, service can be a little slow, but be patient. It's a mom and pop shop, not a fancy restaurant with a ton of help walking around. Food is worth the wait if you're looking for that warm feeling of mom's home cooking!

One of the best Cantonese restaurants in Chicago. It's just like the food back in China! The space inside is not very big but enough for a great dinner with friends! Would definitely recommended the pork here, absolutely amazing!

Kinda Cantonese papa/mama family run hidden gem. That is said: 1. you can order whatever you want and how you wanna it being cooked, so long as they have such material in their kitchen. 2. service is OK. Plz be aware that back in China, the waitress does not come to you triple times per minute disrupting you from chewing. Do not be shy to raise your hand and ask the waitress for what you need. 3. Rumors provided that if you went there alone and ordered too much, the owner will reduce the size of each dish you order and give you a discount accordingly.

I was there last night for our dinner. I had aspected that no one was there for dinner a day after Thanksgiving, but I was wrong. It was getting crowded after we arrived. This place is a small kitchen in which all of food taste like home taste. Not overcooked or undercooked. Most of dishes we ordered were just marinated enough. Especially, they use enough oil to make dishes that you never find in another restaurant in Chinatown. Most of restaurants in Chinatown, where I have been to, use a lot of oil so that my stomach always gets trouble. I highly recommend veggies dishes due to the freshest of them. Although the staffs here are old, they serve customers in a decent and respectable way. Be prepared cash if you want to get some discounts from the owner.

TL, DR: bad service, half-cold dishes Super disappointed, we came before 5pm when more than half tables were empty and seated ppl were almost done, but we still waited more than 25 minutes to order, ppl who came later than us ordered before us. The only lady who is responsible for taking orders chitchatted with that group of ppl, took their orders and then went back to the front desk, we waited another 10 mins for that lady to come to our table to take our orders. Then We waited another 30-ish minutes for our dishes to come while ppl who came later were already served. Dishes were half cold already when they came, they apparently had stayed in the kitchen for a while. Food is just ok-ish. Waitresses were rude.

Had been here couple of time, decent eatery for Cantonese style food and seafood, I had very good experience with their steamed or stir-fried fish dishes before, remember to check with the waitress what they have daily from the sea. Inside is a bit of crowded, it is more of a family style but with good food.

Probably one of the most authentic Chinese restaurants in Chicago :') I'm so glad this restaurant exists. The waiters don't speak much English but they have English menus. Their dishes are all family style and everything is great!!!! Def recommend the steamed egg, the duck and their eggplant is really good too. I would come here with groups of 3+ so that you can try and share more dishes!

Great cantonese home cooked food, highly recommend place to visit in Chicago.

This is a place for some pretty freaking delicious seafood. The restaurant itself is tiny, crowded, and very unassuming from the outside - the exact kind of Cantonese tea-house style that I trust to serve authentic dishes. I wouldn't have known this place exists if it weren't for a friend who brought me here! Almost everyone eating here was Chinese/Asian, and the place was bustling by 6 pm - there was a small line waiting to be seated. The seafood here are reminiscent of the ones that I had in Hong Kong, which is saying quite a lot. Between my friend and I, we split a Dungeness crab, which is a whole crab cooked in a lightly salted batter and was unbelievably aromatic and juicy, and fresh scallops+razor clams, which were cooked in a garlicky broth with rice noodles. We also got a side of their vegetables of the day, a bowl of water spinach in a broth that was cooked with some thousand year-old preserved eggs in it. I loved everything we got, and was absolutely stuffed. Definitely an ideal spot if you're looking for some real Cantonese/Taiwanese-style seafood and dishes!

i usually am NOT a fan of cantonese food as i think it's way too sweet, oily, and bland and much prefer sichuanese or northern chinese food. however, the food at grand palace is a sure knockout and pumps out some of the best cantonese food that i've had outside of hong kong or shenzhen! first things first, i love the ambience of the restaurant. it's definitely not glitzy, and the oversized fish in the tank make me a little nervous, but the restaurant is full of personal touches that make it seem more like someone's home than an eating establishment. i think the cutest touch is the caricatures of the staff on the wall as it shows how the place is family and community oriented and just adds that much more of a homey touch. now on to the food. it's SO SO Good, like actually amazing. most people come here for the steamed fish, and for good reason. we got the steamed black sea bass and it was fresh and beautifully lightly seasoned with soy sauce, ginger, and scallions. the string beans here are also top notch and extremely satisfying. however, out of all the dishes that i've tried here, i think the steamed egg is the true winner. both the triple egg and ground pork versions are AMAZINGLY tender and flavorful and go perfectly with rice. also, this restaurant still gives out free soup in the beginning and oranges at the end, the perfect appetizer and dessert to any meal. the prices are very reasonable, except for the steamed fish. expect to pay around 40-50 dollars per fish depending on its size, but i can honestly say its well worth it. the freshness of the fish is unparalleled at other cantonese restaurants in chicago, and i think its a valid investment. come thru to grand palace for thoughtfully prepared cantonese food, and make sure to get the steamed egg!!!!

Friend told us about this place when we attended the grand opening of the museum across the street, so we came on a Thursday night and it was packed! Had to wait about 30min before getting seats, tried to just order takeout but the owner lady said it'd take about the same time, so she took our order while we were waiting for our table and sure enough, food showed up as soon as we sat down. Perfect timing! Loved the steamed egg custard, reminds me of what my mom often made at home. We also had fried soft shell crab and tofu casserole. Nothing fancy, just delicious homecooking. Only minor quibble was every other table had free soup but we never got any and it was a dreary cold day. Oh well, maybe when we become regulars?

If you are looking for a mom & pop restaurant where the locals go, here it is. It's a small 10 table place. The wait can be crazy on Friday night. But well worth the wait. The owner behind the corner is super friendly and is a people person. When we arrived there was a car across the street with the lights on. She asked around to see if it was any of the patrons. She was concerned about the battery running out and the car dying. It was a patrons car waiting for her carry out order. Never heard of any other restaurant mgr or staff worried about a little thing like that. The owner is the only one that takes orders. So we preordered while waiting for our table. She laughed when we placed our order and told us it was a lot of food. We were hungry and had friends recommend this place all the time. The food was excellent. Not salty and very flavorful. Not a single complaint. The prices were very reasonable. Our table was the last to leave and we apologized. The owner was watching the Chinese soap opera and said she didn't care if we stayed. We ordered vegetable egg rolls, potato leafs garlic sauce, Japanese tofu and enoki mushrooms, chicken wings and Dungeness crab preserved egg yolk. We didn't have much left. Only chicken wings. The menu has very traditional Chinese dishes. Next time we have to try the steamed egg with vermicelli noodles. If you want whole in the wall, friendly staff and delicious food, this is the place.

I have lived in China, Queens, and Chicago, and can confidently say that this is one of the best Chinese restaurants I have been to in the United States. It is far and away the best Cantonese restaurant in Chicago (unless you specifically want Dim Sum). There are a few bad reviews complaining about the service, which is frankly bizarre. The owner is funny, warm, and welcoming. Can't recommend highly enough.

My fave Chinatown restaurant besides Chi Cafe and Chatime TTNoodle and The Noodle. Small cheap eats to eat w group of ppl or get take out. Spacious parking lot for a few cars. Fast service. Friendly mommas. Bomb Chinese food. Homey not ugly but cozy. I've only been here three times.

The old story is do not judge a book by it's cover. The place was is a great example. The egg drop soup was outstanding, the chicken wings were average, the egg rolls were good, the shrimp with lobster was fair and the chicken egg foo young was fantastic. Please give this place a try.

A family-run Cantonese seafood restaurant that screams "don't mess with tradition". The food here is unpretentious and this is reflected in both the ingredients and price. The things to die for here: roast duck served with five-spice sauce, deep fried soft shell crab, salt & pepper squid, and stewed beef tripe with tofu skin. The taste of the dishes takes a step back from commercial kitchens and reminds you of home-style cooking. Moreover, while most Chinese restaurants tend to use a ton of oil and MSG to enhance the flavor, there is a level of lightness to each dish that leaves you satisfied the entire evening. Advanced reservation is encouraged as the space is small. The ladies who take the orders might not have the best command of English, but when they have a suggestion for a dish, maybe because you looked stuck, do not think twice. This is a hidden-gem of Chicago's Chinese restaurant scene that I would absolutely recommend to any foodie who has a passion for adventures in authentic cuisines.

Criteria for authentic Chinese Restaurant #1: Generic and nondescriptive name, including at least one of the following words: grand, dragon, lotus, palace, garden, star #2: We're the only people speaking English here #3: Bathroom is reasonably, but not prohibitively, dirty #4: Mop Closet in plain view #5: Single T.V. hanging from a wall which is probably only used for Chinese Videos #6: I Can't read half the menu. Nonetheless, it all tastes delicious #7: At one point, half of the restaurant was taken up by a single party for some sort of celebration(be it wedding, birthday, anniversary, etc.). That party may or may not have been us. Go with someone who can speak Canto, and be happy.

My mom and I came here to get carry out. It was a bit busy, but seem most of the tables were already eating or just got their food. So, we placed 3 rice box orders and it came out to $16. She told us 20 minutes.....wow quite long for carry out. So we went outside to wait. My mom went back inside to check on food after 20 minutes already. I was outside and I'm not kidding.....it took like another 15 minutes. WTF! 35 minutes for 3 rice boxes......that's crazy. My mom said she saw 3 tables that came after us get their food. Wow, you would think you get the carry out orders first and we walked in...not called. HIRE MORE PEOPLE IF YOU NEED IT!!! The food was ok, nothing spectacular. I suggest going to chinatown instead. Still irked at the 35 minute wait......(shakes head).

This place is a real foodie destination. You don't go here for great atmosphere or great service. You only go here for extremely delicious food. This was the best Chinese meal I ever had. Service was nice and friendly enough. Food was unbelievable.
