"Restaurateur Rajesh Suri and chef Dayashankar Sharma’s contemporary South Woodford venue isn’t North Indian as such — its ambitious idea is to showcase cooking inspired by the Grand Trunk Road, an ancient trade route that stretched between Kabul to Kolkata, with a menu spanning North Indian to Bengali dishes. The room is tastefully decorated with antique temple carvings, terracotta figurines, jaali screens, and a shiny bar. There’s vibrancy and freshness of flavour here, whether in own-made coriander or tamarind chutneys that drape Punjabi chaats, ajwain seeds that perk up Amritsari tilapia, or baby okra that somehow manage to keep their grass-green colour and just-firm texture despite being cooked with vinegar and beetroot. There are comforting classics, too, such as slow-cooked Lucknowi lamb shanks aromatic with saffron and cardamom, bottle-gourd koftas soft as velvet pouches, and dhaba dal whose earthiness is a good foil to spicier dishes." - Sejal Sukhadwala

"Showcasing the cooking of the Grand Trunk Road, an ancient trade route that stretched between Kabul to Kolkata, the menu at this smart venue includes North Indian and Bengali dishes. Try excellent tandoor king prawns, Punjabi chaats, butter chicken, Amritsari tilapia with ajwain seeds, or baby okra cooked with vinegar and beetroot. And don’t miss out on the bread basket. Perfect for a treat at the end of a day on the doorstep." - Shekha Vyas

The starters were tasty! The lamb was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The biriani was slightly underwhelming taste wise for the price point. The restaurant has a nice interior that is suitable for nice meals out with family and colleagues. The staff were attentive helpful.

Service was excellent, the starters were top class. However the main was not great at all. The lamb biryani had no taste and was boring a baby can eat that no spice. The chicken tava was not great at all. Overall I gave it 3 stars due to the very expensive bill and the main was bad.

Been twice, once many years ago and yesterday. Yesterday's meal was utterly scrumptious, packed with flavour. The set menu is excellent value although would forgo the dessert next time as it wasn't so good. Chicken 2 way was excellent as was the lamb ghost. Ordered an extra peshawari naan as it doesn't come with many peices per person with the set menu. This too was high end naan. If I'm being critical the poppadom portion is very small. Overall a great dining experience. Service is attentive and friendly.

For my anniversary, I chose this place as it had Michelin status along with the fact it was halal and local to me. However, we were quite disappointed with this restaurant overall. We ordered lamb chops and poppadoms for starters which was a great start to the meal. Probably one of the best lamb chops I've had in a very long time (albeit a bit pricey for 3 pieces). For main, I ordered the lobster dish which was the tail only (wasn't specified on the menu) and the missus got butter chicken and we got naan and rice as sides. For drinks, we had the Passion fruit mocktail, but it was your standard syrup and drink mix, nothing wow. Lobster was OK, nothing amazing as I expected for £35! In fact, I asked for lime wedges to add flavour to it which made it better and we finished it otherwise probably wouldn't have. As for the butter chicken, it was not to our taste at all and mentioned to the waitress that it was overwhelming with cardamon and inedible to some extent. We were left a bit hungry and thought dessert might help but nothing on the dessert menu was appealing. And as far as Michelin status goes, I was really surprised with the lack of presentation in the dishes - it was basic like any other normal Indian restaurant. Towards the end, when I was paying, the manager taking the payment (at least I think he was the manager) was asking how the food was, I mentioned about the overwhelming cardamom taste but he said that was what's special about this dish and everyone else loves it however I said me and the missus order butter chicken all the time and never had it like this. Spent over £100 for two of us, which I wouldn't have complained about if the food was nice. I would have given it a 2 star due to being disappointed with the food considering the price but the only thing that stopped me from doing that was the great customer service and lamb chops. We don't plan to visit this place again, nor recommend it to others. I plan to go to another place soon to 'redo' my anniversary dinner.

If you're walking by, you would never imagine how beautiful, classy, welcoming and elegant the location is on the inside. The staff is extra-kind, friendly, chic, and attentive. I appreciated they offered to take our coats and the cleanness of our table, wiping it a couple of times in between our courses. The toilets are easy to access and clean. As a starter, they offer you water and poppadoms baskets (they keep bringing sauces). The cocktails were well-made. Five stars to the bartender. We had the Afghani Silk and the Spiced Old Fashioned. The food was of excellent quality and perfectly cooked. Scallops and crab opened our appetite; I had the Amristari butter chicken with naan bread (the bread was surprisingly sweet, and I noticed it had coconut inside, delicious!). The others had Bengali Pepper Fish, Tiger prawns and Lamb Curry. I also ordered a salad, and they brought me the GRT salad, but I couldn't eat it because it was too hot for my taste; however, my friends loved it! Anything you'll pick will amuse your palate! We ended our culinary experience with a mango Brulee and Gulab Jaman accompanied by a ball of vanilla ice cream, too good to be described! We paid 260£ for 4. I think it is high-priced, but the overall experience will satisfy you.

We had a very enjoyable experience at Grand Trunk Road. Excellent food that was not the "clone" menu of your typical Indian restaurant. My favourite was the Punjabi Murgh Masala, though it must be noted that the Coastal prawn curry was the best prawn curry I've ever had. The service was excellent and all the staff were very accommodating. I would recommend this restaurant unreservedly!

As a Michelin status restaurant I had high expectations. As soon as we walked in we were greeted and taken to out seats by staff and given menus. Throughout our meal they provided an excellent service. We ordered lamb chops and popadam mix for starter. The lamb was exceptionally cooked and seasoned, it was the perfect start to our meal. For mains we ordered lobster and butter chicken with naan and rice. The butter chicken gravy had a very overwhelming cardamom flavor and I could not have more than a few bites, my husband tried to finish it but even he could not manage to do so. Butter chicken is a favourite of mine and I always order it but this one left me very disappointed. It lacked the depth of flavour and richness that butter chicken normally has. The lobster was cooked really well but lacked in seasoning, mainly salt. I asked for some lime and the addition of the juice instantly lifted the flavours of the dish. We didn't order any dessert as nothing looked appealing. Their mocktail was nice but nothing to rave about. It's a nice restaurant but not one I would be visiting again nor recommending to friends and family.

A real mixed bag ranging from sensational deserts to an awful pseudo biryani. We went for a birthday celebration and this was a convenient location, saving us the trek into town. Ambience and decor were conducive to fine dining. The tables were full but it was not noisy and no awful music. One of our party has a serious shellfish allergy and they were very considerate about that. The starters were very good. We got about 6 I think. Grilled chickens and fish. All the fish dishes were perfectly cooked. We ordered truffle and mushroom naan which had no taste of truffle or mushroom. Very disappointing. The major disappointment was the lamb biryani. This was not a biryani by any stretch, it was more like a pilaf. The lamb pieces contained inedible grissly bits which is unforgivable bearing in mind what they were charging for it. The aubergine dish was right up my street. The deserts were sensational. We ordered mango brulee and a weird sounding avocado and rose icecream, which is worth going back for again and again. I also ordered a coffee which was surprisingly excellent. This is a pricey place so they cannot serve substandard food if they want customers to return.
