‘Forever’ Review: Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen Shine in Oddball Drama | Eater

"One of three Birmingham-area food trucks profiled in the pilot episode of Andrew Zimmern’s new Food Network series, this truck operates outside Regents Field and focuses on Southern comfort fare, notably fish and grits. The segment treats the operators as passionate upstart chefs and frames their work as part of a diverse, grassroots food-truck scene; the episode plays more like a profile than a hard-edged competition and culminates with the host placing large cash tips in the jars (one truck received $10,000; the others received $1,000 each)." - Greg Morabito

Food is delicious. Service is speedy and hospitable. The only problem is parking depending on the time and day. Other than that would definitely recommend. I got the 2 piece catfish with double grits for a Lil under 20$. The fish was crispy and well seasoned; grits were cheesy, creamy, and thick. Now I gotta go back to get a grit bowl...

I drove for 26 mins to get to this spot. It is a food truck and people were lined up. I got 2 pieces of catfish, fries and grits all under $20 bucks. When I say I'm satisfied... I'M VERY SATISFIED, THEY DID NOT MISS!! I will definitely be back!!👅💦

Google
This place was amazing. Had the grits bowl with shrimp and sausage along with a catfish plate. From the first bite, the fact that I didn't have to season the grits was a HUGE plus. Then the sausage and shrimp was seasoned well and cooked perfect. The catfish was also seasoned and cooked perfectly for my taste. I was so pleased with this experience and the wait wasn't long at all. This would be my first choice in Birmingham for Fish and Grits. Will definitely be frequenting this again.

Google
I am not a fish and grits person, but purchased a few bowls for some coworkers. They loved the bowls. I highly recommend this restaurant if you really want a well prepared fish and grits.

Julia D

Google
The food is always hot and fresh. The young person taking food orders is usually lacking in personality and people skills, but that won't deter me from getting my fish and grits.

Laconia Byron

Google
A food truck. But, it is- so worth every cent. OMG. The shrimp and grits bowl was so amazing. Once I started, I could stop until it was all gone. It was that good.

Antwuan Stinson

Google
If you're looking for great food, this is the right place. Clean, delicious, and cooked to order.

Yelp
Granny's is so good. Customer service was great. Took about 15 minutes to get my food and everything was fresh and good. I wish I could've went straight home to enjoy but you know food is good when you can enjoy it cold/warm. I got the one piece catfish with grits and Cajun ranch okra for $12. The okra? Best okra besides Munchie's that I've had here so far. I wish they gave more. I might get double next time. The grits were pretty good. The Parmesan I asked for always adds a nice touch. The catfish could've been fried harder to my liking but it was seasoned well. I'll definitely be back sooner than later!

Yelp
GRANNY GRANNY GRANNY! My food was amazing. Everything was cooked fresh when I ordered it. After I placed order it took about 15 min and I was on my way. I ordered 1pc catfish plate which comes with 2 sides. Trust me I will be back to this food truck really soon. 10/10 *ignore the okra in grits I flipped my plate over

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this Food Truck ever since Dad saw it on Food Network but timing had just never worked out until recently. I arrived a little early and was pleasantly surprised they were ready to start serving. Staff was very courteous and made recommendations about popular items when I said I had never tried it before. I chose the Catfish with a double order of grits loaded with sausage for my sides. My only regret was not getting a 2nd piece of fish. It was so good! As is the serving size was plenty filling. Absolutely will be making an effort to get again soon! Hopefully they will send one of the trucks to the east side of Birmingham to make it easier to stop by on the regular.

Yelp
Granny's is ALWAYS good! I have never had anything bad from here. My favorite is usually a shrimp bowl or a sausage bowl, but the fried fish is good too.

Nora S.

Yelp
I am usually not a fan of catfish, but this was very good. The catfish was very thick and tender - perfectly cooked. I loved the grits. Large portions. My friend loves catfish and was very happy with the catfish and he, too, loved the grits.

Yelp
I had heard really great reviews about this food stand, and since I was on that side of town, I decided to try it. The employees were really friendly and had great customer service skills. I ordered the large shrimp and grits bowl, which was ok, not the best but ok. If I decide to go back, I will definitely try other items on the menu

Alisa B.

Yelp
I've waited years to try them. They did not disappoint. The fish was seasoned to perfection and the grits were creamy and delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Grits are on point. Shrimp seasoned very well. Sausage was also very good. I got the bowl with all 3 meats. Very good.

Yelp
This week I went to granny's fish n grits on 9th St north. I had two cat fish filets fried hard, fried okra and french fries. My food came out very quickly and it was very delicious. The service was amazing and I got the chance to speak with the owner and he was very sweet. He told me he attended Minor High School. Because it's a food truck there were no options for outdoor dining so I ate my food at Railroad park.

Yelp
This place has been on my list for a while. I'd forgotten about it and then it came up on my Newsfeed as a 'Food Network presents...' That definitely inspired me. The venue: Just like the advertisements says, they're near Birmingham Daiquiri; you can't miss them. Parking is a little questionable. I really only notice street parking available but it's a food truck so... there's that. The food: I ordered the combination bowl with grits, shrimp and sausage. Y'all these folks hands are so blessed! The meats and seasonings were prefect. But, THE GRITS were the star of the bowl. I'm not even a cheese grits girl (I'm sugar and butter - judge me later) but this bowl was something special! I'll definitely go back to try more from the menu. The chicken and fish looked good. The line: When I went (around 7 on a Friday evening) the line was not crazy at all. There were about 5-6 ppl ahead of me. But the line moved really fast and orders are ready quickly. I'm naturally impatient. This was a breeze. The people: I wanted to meet the matriarch of this business. She was there! I was star struck... She and the staff were very kind. It was a great experience!

Yelp
I've visited this food truck multiple times. Normally, I get the shrimp and grits or the fried chicken. I've had the fried fish below as well. I've always liked any of the food I've gotten from here. Sometimes, the grits are a tad bit greasy, but it doesn't affect the flavor of the food! This food truck is normally parked right outside of Birmingham Daiquiri and they are usually opened really late. I wish they would pop up around the city more like some of the other food trucks, but at least I know where to find them since they generally park at the same place. I'd definitely recommend their food!
google avatar

Richard J.

Yelp
I was craving catfish and Granny's satisfied that craving. I was soooooo glad we decided on this location for dinner.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Good but not great like I expected it to be. I can get better grits at Shug's in Bessemer. I can get better fish at Shrimp Co. in Hueytown. I will not return. Like a college basketball player, 1 and DONE!
google avatar

Jamekia G.

Yelp
This may be a little bias because I have been eating off this truck for the VERY BEGINNING! They can do NO wrong!! I got the Combo bowl which featured Shrimp, Bacon, & those FAMOUS cheese grits!!! Fiancé got the chicken plate that had 4 whole wings seasoned to perfection, 2 slices of bread, & those FAMOUS cheese grits!! We are never disappointed! The fiancé only has to add hot sauce & he loves that Texas Pete she has! I am also partial to the Fried Lobster which I didn't get this time, but your taste buds will love you for it!!!
google avatar

Yelp
I can't believe simple fish and shrimp n grits were this delicious!!! It's worth a trip to Birmingham every weekend!!! The line was long, but so worth the wait!!! If you haven't tried them, you are missing out; I don't care what part of the world you're in or if you've had shrimp and grits before...you haven't had Granny's!!
google avatar

Porsha E.

Yelp
My first visit here on a Saturday I waited about an hour and half just for grits. I had to ask the associate 2 times about my order, after the 2nd time I was told they lost my ticket. Overall, the grits tasted amazing and despite the wait, I was given an extra bowl free of charge. However I don't plan to visit soon, especially not on the weekend.
google avatar

Briaa M.

Yelp
This is honestly my go to food truck since moving to the Birmingham area. The food is amazing, rather it is a grit bowl, chicken, or the fish! The foods is always fresh and hot. They accept multiple payment methods and have sustainable dining options, as in the Togo boxes and Togo grit bowls, the bowls are reusable. The crew members while working in a compact area still maintain proper COVID procedures and great southern hospitality . There isn't legit dining in options since it is as food truck, however the patio area next to their truck that you can enjoy your food while sipping on a daiquiri. Follow them on Instagram for updates and hours of operations @grannysfishandgrits
google avatar

Ausha R M.

Yelp
DELICIOUS! My second time visiting and I wasn't disappointed. While the wait was about an hour from the time I arrived, it was well worth it! I ordered the shrimp plate with double cheese grits and my sides, because why not! My friend opted for the hot wings, grits and okra! We were both pleased and left full!
google avatar

Yelp
Late night of packing and decided to make a food run. Been here before after a night on the town so expected the same. I guess because they've gotten so popular some things have changed. I had the shrimp bowl for $8 and it was a pound of Grits and maybe 6 very small over cooked shrimp and the grits were bland My gf had the whole wing plate with Grits add bacon and although the grease needed to be changed her food was bomb and she said she was thankful for adding the bacon so her Grits didn't taste like mine. Lol. She had 4 big whole wings fried perfectly. I ended up eating some of her chicken instead eating alllll the damn Grits. Will I go back. Maybe so but I will not get my favorite again.
google avatar

Laura A.

Yelp
I went to support a local business. I've heard good things about the food truck. We order the tilapia plate with fries and okra and shrimp plate with fries and grits. And like 3 wings to sample. Only word that comes to mind is Salt! The food was cooked well and prices were good. But just wayyyy to much salt on everything. The after taste of everything was just salt. I wanted some different flavors and texture. It was a solid 6 out of 10. the staff was nice and the food didn't take long.
google avatar

Tiffany J.

Yelp
This is a food truck and the food is the BUSINESS!!!! OMG....They have the creamiest grits I've ever tasted.....I got a grit bowl with sausage, bacon, and shrimp. The area is a bit seedy but the food is delicious!!! The bowls are about $13 for three meats.......If you run across this food truck, please stop!!!

Kenya R.

Yelp
Granny's can get a 10/10 from me anyway! This was probable one of the first food trucks I have ever tried, and it is so delicious! The food is always hot and fresh which is a a big deal for me. Most places I eat at I have to ask them to cook my food fresh, but not here. They are a busy business, but they are great with getting you your food at a decent time. Since Granny's does not have an actual restaurant, there are no COVID precautions. My favorite thing to get from here is the shrimp and grits. It is the best! The grits are always so creamy and cheesy just how I like them. I have also had their fish and hot wings, which are both good as well! This is one food truck that everyone should try.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
If you ever need a great late night meal, Granny's Fish 'N Grits is the place to go! If you didn't know, Granny's is a food truck. When I first pulled up it was a line of people, which is a good thing... it just means their food is awesome. But beware, you may have to wait. I had hot, lemon pepper wings and a side of fries. Everything was cooked to order and very fresh. The seasoning on the wings were yummy too. My friend had the jumbo fried shrimp and cheese grits. Omg the cheese grits tasted just like how my grandma used to cook hers and the fried shrimp was bomb too! I will definitely be back to try more from Granny's menu!
google avatar

Yelp
Granny's Fish'N Grits is amazing, I love it so much I could literally eat it everyday. The people that work the food truck are Great, Friendly, and make you want to come back over and over.. This food truck is highly recommend

Yelp
I loveeeeee granny's! Any time I'm in bham, I HAVE to go. Even if they run out of something, I know that whatever I get will be good. I usually get the combination bowl and whooooooo my God! It's amazing. Be prepared to wait in a line but I promise it's worth it.

Yelp
I have heard so much about Granny's Fish N Grits and decided to try it the last time I visited my hometown of Birmingham, Alabama and I made sure I went early to avoid the crowd. Let's get started. Granny's Fish N Grits is a Birmingham food truck. I'm accustomed to this because we have food trucks all over Atlanta and the concept is great. The food truck is parked on 3rd Avenue and 9th Street. When I arrived there wasn't a line so I was excited. Parking: There is minimal parking on the street and I'm sure the later it gets, the more difficult it is to find a parking space. I parked at the Church's Chicken and prayed my car wouldn't get towed:-) Ambience: The food truck is parked near Church's Chicken. I don't recall outdoor tables so it appears there is take out service only. I was told to get there around 7pm to avoid the crowd. It is my understanding the hours are 5pm -3am and the later it gets, the more patrons you have to deal with. The menu is available with a list of all of the offerings. Menu: There are several items on the menu that include grits, fish, chicken, shrimp, bacon, sausage to name a few. I decided to try the super bowl which consisted of grits, shrimp, bacon and sausage. The combination of the items was absolutely amazing. The grits were creamy and the toppings added the right amount of flavor. Staff/Service: Since I was the only person in line, it didn't take long for my dish to be prepared. The cashier was extremely friendly and made sure she got the order correct. I waited about 5 minutes for my dish, so the service was fairly quick - which I like. Taste: Oh my! The dish was amazing! I was surprised that I liked the dish as much as i did. I didn't know how I would feel about the shrimp and bacon combination, but the flavor was on point. I shared with my family and they loved the dish as well. I will definitely be back and share the great review with family and friends. If you live in the Magic City, this is a must try. I give this food truck 5 stars. The food makes you want to slap your momma, your husband and your children. All I can say is wow!
google avatar

Julia O.

Yelp
Granny's is one of my favorite spots. The bowls are really good as well as the fish and grits.

Hanna H.

Yelp
I waited for too long to try this food truck. It was worth waiting. I brought all my family last night after the Birmingham Iron game. We got super bowl/shrimp bowl/catfish plate/wings plate. The grits are amazing! Probably the best I have ever had. The seasoning is good but my favorite was the catfish and coleslaw. Thanks Granny's ! We will be back!
google avatar

Corey W.

Yelp
Everything I've tried here has been some real fire. Though, it's their fried okra that's brought me to this line I'm now standing in... Solo, but only because they're not actually opened yet!
google avatar

Tip W.

Yelp
Great food! Never disappoints the grits are good as hell. The chicken and fish I can say basically the same.. worth the wait and worth the price. Keep up tha good job ..

Yelp
Even though this is my first time going to Granny's this is by far my favorite food truck in Birmingham! I eat a pescatarian diet so my options are sometimes limited, but I definitely see myself becoming a regular at Granny's. I ordered the 2 piece catfish plate and cheese grits and felt as though I was eating a home cooked meal. Everything was seasoned well and seemed to be cooked to order as by the time I made it home the food was still piping hot. I have found food trucks to be a great takeout dining option due to covid and Granny's exceeded expectations. Also food trucks are able to be fairly sustainable due to not having as many cost concerns as a sit down restaurant, and Granny's Fish N Grits is also a great choice in that regard. I look forward to going back and trying some other menu items!
google avatar

Courtney B.

Yelp
I have been seeing all the great posts about this place and my boyfriend has been bugging be about it for a while so we decided to go one day while we were on that side of town. It is a little ducked off on the side of Bham Daiquiris, not much parking available besides on the road (if you live in Bham, you should be used to the struggle of parking) but still easily accessed. We went early evening so there wasn't much of a crowd yet so the wait was short as well as getting the food. Of course we tried the shrimp n grits and BOY, Granny did her thing with them grits! The staff was very friendly and carried on conversation, they all wore gloves and masks while working/cooking/taking orders. The food was even served in hard plastic tupperware like containers so if you wanted to reuse them you could. All other materials were given to upon requests so there was not much extra waste.
google avatar

Tynesia C.

Yelp
The food truck I was able to go to his grannies fish and grits. I've been to this place is so many times. Each time that I go there the food is delicious. You might have a long wait but it is well worth it. The food is always hot and it never disappoints me. If anybody is looking for a good place for breakfast foods or wings I would recommend this place. The food is always fresh and delicious and it won't disappoint you.
google avatar

Kaneshia R.

Yelp
This is my all time go to food truck! It's in a good location, being that the food truck is right next to Birmingham Daquiris. You would think you would have a long wait time once you pull up and see alot of people...but NO. They make sure your food is out in a timely manner. I've tried pretty much everything on the menu, but my go-to is the SuperBowl. The superbowl consists of grits topped with shrimp, conecuh sausage, and bacon bits. When I tell you it is AWESOMEEEE? That's what I mean. The workers always wear gloves and they mask up which is a good thing because they are in a tight area. I would highly recommend Granny's Fish 'N Grits to everyone. I even read that they have a restaurant opening soon. Go Granny!
google avatar

Megan R.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this food truck for so long! Glad my class gave me an excuse to go. This food truck is only open certain days/times. Usually starts at 4 p.m. and last throughout the night! If you love catfish, shrimp, or just want some wings this is the place to try! I am not a fan of fish but I love wings and after looking at their instagram photos for so long I have finally tried them! Highly recommend! The workers wore gloves and mask to ensure safety for the food and customers. The wait for the food was not long at all and there was not much of a crowd. Check out their instagram to get a feel of the food and what days/time they will be open!
google avatar

Shannon G.

Yelp
This place is the BOMB!!! I've tried EVERYTHING on this food truck and haven't been let down at all! If you're ever in the Birmingham, Al. area check em out!
google avatar

Char B.

Yelp
This place is great after a night on the town. I've tried this place twice, each time good consistent service. The shrimp is tender & the grits are creamy. Sometime the line can be long depending on what's going on in BHAM at the time. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was the food doesn't scream exceptional to me. Its nothing I would go out of my way to get. However, if I'm downtown in need of food I would go.
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
You need to eat here at least once, but if you eat here you will want it every day. I ordered the hot lemon pepper wings, double grits, and okra. The food was so delicious and kept well in the fridge, but there was not much to put up. You take a number, and they will not give you food unless you have the slip. I like that because nobody can take your food. If the criteria was only for the food they would get 5 stars, but I gave them 4 stars due to them not following proper covid guidelines. The employees were not wearing masks and the ones who had them did not wear them properly. Their prices are lower than other food trucks. To know if they are truly open is to follow them on Instagram @grannysfishandgrits. The parking is pretty good if you go early.
google avatar

Erin P.

Yelp
Granny's is great late night eats! Open until 3am it is the best late night food around. It was a bit of a drive to get there and a long line once we did, but super worth it. Fried fish , fried shrimp, fried okra- pinnacle of good as real as it gets soul food.
google avatar

Tommy D.

Yelp
Ran into Granny's while in Birmingham last week on business travel. Service was very friendly, as this was the first time in years I've eaten at a food truck. The slaw and okra were absolutely delicious. The fish and shrimp were tasty, but a bit salty - as I am a non-salt eater. Otherwise I would recommend trying it!
google avatar

Chaz M.

Yelp
If you are looking for good late night food truck food please don't pass by Granny's. The Super Bowl consist of grits topped with bacon, sausage and shrimp. The fried chicken wings remind me of how my grandmother used to fry chicken wings. The only down side to this food truck is the lack of parking and the long lines. When the line is very long the wait usually takes close to 30 mins just to get your food. Otherwise it's a great late night food option.
google avatar

Ms R.

Yelp
I don't see what the big fuss is about....my food was extremely mediocre to say the least. I will never go back to this food truck. Wasted my money....I knew when I opened my box and saw those half assed seasoned lemon pepper wings and old fries it wasn't going to be good.
google avatar

Donna H.

Yelp
3.5 rating . The food was good. Overrated, but it was a great late night stop. The bacon bowl was better than the famous shrimp bowl.
google avatar

B W.

Yelp
Amazing!!! Always on point. Connecha sausage bowl is my favorite! The wings are good to

Brooke G.

Yelp
The food was decent. I got the super bowl and my meat was a little tough. The grits just needed a little salt. Not bad at all, but could have been better.
google avatar

Nicki N.

Yelp
Most times I find this food truck parked next to Birmingham Daiquiris and they have great fried goodies to go with the nearby libations. I usually opt for the fish or wing plate with fries or grits... they have really good grits but not always the best choice for the heat of summer so tonight I opted for fries and cole slaw. Neither were too memorable but the crispy chicken wings more than makes up for it. Also the catfish is usually light and crispy fried as well and is especially good with the grits. They also offer different kings of grit bowls with shrimp, bacon or sausage or a combination of these. I've really enjoyed most anything that I've ordered from this truck--just the sides aren't that memorable. Always a good spot to visit when in the area!

Louis N.

Yelp
I lover there fish and cheese grit's. This is a good southern stop and go full u uper, check it out if u are close by.
google avatar

L R.

Yelp
Nothing like soul food to feed the soul. According to other reviewers..mentioned getting there early...agree they earlier the better. We were able to place our order with ease and received our food in a timely manner. I ordered the tilapia, cheese grits and coleslaw. The fish was more than enough as well as the grits and coleslaw. Okay, the presentation was on point, the food smelled delicious and the food was nicely seasoned. A very good experience! A gorgeous evening on a Fall day, and it adds up to perfection!

JR J.

Yelp
Cheese grits & Cole slaw! Both are stars! Grits creamy and seasoned perfectly. Slaw was perfect & I'm not a slaw person like that. They know what they are doing.
