13 Best Restaurants in Nevada City and Grass Valley

"During the Gold Rush, Grass Valley was home to many migrants from Cornwall, England, and the Pasty Co. keeps that bit of history alive with a selection of authentic, flaky, Cornish pasties — savory, half-moon-shaped hand pies, made freshly daily. Options are limited, but there are rotating vegetarian and meat-filled selections to choose from. If you see a barbacoa beef option on the menu, get it without hesitation." - Flora Tsapovsky

We have been here two times this month! Delightful pasties. Their chicken mushroom one is my favorite. The staff is very friendly and they even treated our pup to a steak treat. We bought some of their frozen pastries to cook at home (had to try all five varieties!) and they baked beautifully and tasted just as good as the ones in the shop. The pastry was not compromised.

Google
Such great pastys! The crust is so fresh and fluffy buttery goodness. They make so many different flavors and unique twists and variations of fillings every week. Get there early to get the best flavors of the week. They sell out fast of those. Parking can be a bit tricky sometimes but just use the lot across the street or go straight through the light passed the restaurant and down the one way street and there is a second parking area on the right. Go try them they are so good!

Google
Had the vegetarian pasty, HOLY COW. It was like a handheld pot pie. It somehow was not dry, it was crispy and flaky outside and creamy veggies that still had a little bit of a crunch (ie fresh and not from a frozen bag). Well worth the $13, it fed two hungry gals.

Google
This place is great! This was actually my second visit to this place, originally I stopped by about 2-3 years ago, and it was amazing then also. I got the cousin Jack, and it was amazing. My friends the the pork one, and they loved it. This is only place I’ve ever had a pasty at, and it has certainly set the bar high. The bread on the pasty is so flaky and crispy. You can see the bakers making everything right behind the counter. I would recommend this place to anyone, and I am certainly coming back. It’s on the corner of the street, with a mine cart out front. It’s a cool little gem, that is definitely worth visiting.

Google
To be fair, if you've never had pasties from other places, these would be enjoyable. Ordered a Cousin Jack. Taste of filling was good, but have had better. Bread is biscuits texture, not flaky as authentic pasties should be. If paying high prices is your thing, this mostly biscuit bread with a moderate amount of filling, this is the place for you.

Google
After seeing pasties featured in the New York Times, I had to check them out. I am so glad I did! Such a cute little shop, such amazing service and fabulously delicious pasty! I tried the chicken, and I will be back to try all the others as soon as I can return. sSo cool to eat something tied to such a rich history in the area. Definitely come check them out!

Google
As a Michigander, this was like a step back home. I grew up eating pastys. So delicious. My son and I stepped in here a couple weeks ago and both picked out a pasty. He chose the chicken with artichoke instead of mushroom and I got a pulled pork. Yum! Other than the small location that doesn't easily accommodate sitting down, I give it a 5/5. Customer service was wonderful as well. Very down to earth friendly people. Will revisit!

Google
I was headed to a different restaurant, (a good one too) when I passed buy this little pasty shop, the sandwich board caught my eye, I am so glad I that I came in. Fast friendly service, absolutely delicious meaty and savory (and vegetarian options) pasties. Great food

Yelp
The pasties here are a bit extra but definitely in a positive way! Portions are large that you could split it in half and share with someone or save the rest for yourself later, lol. But what makes these pasties memorable are the combination of flavors and using quality ingredients including a soft flaky crust! The chicken pasty is SO GOOD and packed with tender diced chicken, mushrooms, spinach, onion, and cheese -- it was like eating a rich chicken pot pie, especially right out of the oven. Cousin Jack pasty was pretty delicious as well; perfectly-seasoned tender skirt steak, packed evenly with potatoes. The shop is clean and exceptional customer service by the owner and staff. They were all friendly and very helpful with recommendations. Will absolutely return to try the rest of the menu out!

Yelp
The pasty was fantastic. The place doesn't have a seating area, so be prepared to take your order to-go. However, that is a minor concern. The place is a must if you're in the area. Super friendly customer service and a fresh and heart pasty product. They have about 7 flavor options-- they even had a vegetable options. So vegetarians are also considered and have an option to eat here. It's located amongst a street full of local shoppes. So make an afternoon out of your visit. We went to the Empire Mine State Park and the blacksmith at the park recommend a pasty, as this is more than likely what the miners ate, as many of the miners were Cornish. So we tried for the whole experience. I'm sure these pasty's are much more hearty and better quality than what the miners ate, as with any artisan version of a food. In the words of Tiny-The Tiger "THEY'RE GREAT"!

Yelp
I traveled 900 miles to get some frozen pasties to take home. I grew up eating them and I'm happy to have a place that still makes them with excellent quality.

Yelp
Was the old fan of cousin Jack's. I've been to this location several times since. And the quality of the product is deteriorating overtime. The traditional pastie has no meat. It's basically a potato pastie. The crust has no salt or flavor and is dry. I am very disappointed. I wish they would survive. And their prices are high, but I don't care for quality product.

Yelp
Was excited to hear that a new pasty place had opened in the old location for cousin Jacks. I read in reviews that they were different than Jacks but tasty. Unfortunately, our experience was not great. As far as customer service goes, the guys running the place seemed really busy and haphazardly asked for our order. When I mentioned something about Cousin Jack's, they made a point of saying here that they were definitely different. Indeed, they are. We ordered two cousin jacks, one chicken, and one ham and cheese. The cousin jacks pasty was dry with mostly big chunks of potatoes, some skirt steak and that's about it. It was very under seasoned, and even after vinegar and salt it still lacked the flavor I was hoping for. The chicken was flavorful with a heavy mushroom flavor. The ham and cheese was good, but my son said he wished it had more ham as it was mostly potatoes. All three had pockets of raw dough. As somebody who grew up in grass Valley, and had plenty of pasties, growing up from Cousin, Jack's, Marshalls, or way back in the day double bees, I was sad that this was my experience, as I always like to grab one when I visit the area. Maybe we happened to get a bad batch. I hope so. Lastly, for four pasties we payed $62. Quite a hefty price for a lot of potatoes. I usually only leave positive reviews but wanted to provide some honest feedback for those who are used to traditional pasties in the area.

Yelp
Stumbled onto goodness! Hearty meat filled pastry shop (they do have a veggie option). The menu is small but the portion and tasty are big! Love the Ham and Cheese. The Pulled Pork and Chicken will be devoured by tomorrow. The guys in the shop were very friendly and helpful. Shop seems to be very popular for walk in and pick up. There is some seating outside. The corner location and across the street from a parking lot, this is an easy place to visit. And if you are near by, you should often.

Yelp
Amazing pasties. Hot, fresh, hearty food. The spot down the street doesn't even BEGIN to compare.
google avatar

Katherine R.

Yelp
My first time here and they served up an excellent and tasty pasty. I reheated in my oven at home and was great. Not your traditional pasty flavors and so delicious. I had the chicken which included a yummy light gravy, mushrooms and spinach. It tasted like a moist and delicate chicken dish. The pastry was flaky and delectable as well.

Yelp
We absolutely love getting pasties from here. Always so fresh, warm and big. My sons beg to stop here first when we get to downtown. The father and son (I'm assuming) are so kind and accommodating. You feel at home when you walk in. Definitely recommend tasting a piece of history here! Delicious!

Mollie P.

Yelp
Been eating pasties for years, and after loving then at Marshall's and cousin jacks decided to give these a try. So disappointing. I got the chicken and pot roast, almost triple the price of Marshall's beef pasties. The pot roast was shredded and practically non existent, and the entire thing mostly consisted of undercooked red potatoes. I took three bites and had enough of the underseasoned mush. Then the chicken flavor and filling was little better but very much lacking in salt and the dough was still raw and gummy so I could only take a bite without driving it home and putting it in the oven to fully cook. Overall not somewhere I would ever recommend, if you want a good pastie try Marshall's or robinson's as there pasties are significantly less expensive and taste way better!

Yelp
delish hot and fresh pasties!!! I loved the chicken mushroom pasties and the potato beef one filled with an aroma and flavor explosion,,, yummerlicious
google avatar

Rumeet R.

Yelp
This gives you an authentic feeling as if you were in old town grass valley in during the gold rush. I can say it's kind fun if you pick up a pasty and take it to the gold mines and feel the authentic feeling of what miners had eaten after a hard day of work. I was extremely full so if you are a lite eater you might want to split it or save it for later, although you might not want to share.

Yelp
Well, we were in Grass Valley and I wanted to get Pasty's and we called and no answer. You should have an answering machine! Then we drive by and a sign said you were "Out of town" 6/13 - 6/23. It was 7/21. We were very disappointed. Make sure people know. We made a special trip there.
google avatar

Jan P.

Yelp
Vegetarian pasties, better than my grandma used to make. Get them hot from the oven on the way back from Tahoe, they'll hold til you are ready for dinner when you get home (in the Bay Area, for me!). Always a line but it moves quickly.
google avatar

Yelp
Love these guys! Such great eats FAST and fresh. Really great customer service and down to earth bakers. Thanks guys!

Bob W.

Yelp
Our family has been making pastys for many years and Grass Vally Pasty is the best. Boy wish they were closer to Lincoln.
google avatar

Shelly Y.

Yelp
Ok, I'll admit it, I'm a pasty snob! I found the pastys here just a potatoe filled dough pocket. The meat, seriously, was almost non existent. I picked out the meat and found it tasty but barely there. Decomposing the pasty found 85% potatoes. No veggies. Mashed meat, that's all. I've had Cornish pastys by the hundreds and these were terrible. Won't share this place with my brit family
google avatar

Blake R.

Yelp
The owner & staff are very welcoming. The pasties are very tasty. We have gotten several different kinds and love trying their specials from time to time. My family enjoys supporting local businesses that are friendly and inviting!

Yelp
Love at first bite! We have been driving up to Grass Valley from Marysville to get these amazing pasties since they opened! From the crust, to the fillings, they are amazingly delicious! We have tried almost every pasty that they make and we have never been disappointed! Each pasty is big enough for two people, (or one person with a huge appetite!) and they really are worth every dollar that they cost! The last time I was there, I bought a dozen of them, putting several in my freezer, to thaw and reheat in my air fryer toaster oven; they reheat very well. We haven't bought any pasties anywhere else since Grass Valley Pasty Co opened, as they are "The World's Greatest Pasties!"
google avatar

Joan L.

Yelp
This is a very small spot with no seating inside or out -but don't sleep on the pasties! They are so good - freshly made and they get the filling to crust ration perfectly. The fillings are well seasoned and just juicy enough but don't make the crust soggy. They guys who work there are usually making pasties as you order so you can see how the magic happens.

Burrito Q.

Yelp
Many MANY years ago my parents would drive us up to Grass Valley and we'd stop for delicious pasties while we were there. It's been a long time since I've had a good authentic Cornish pasty and this place did not disappoint. Their pasties are huge and bursting with simple filling of steak, potatoes, onion and parsley tucked into a flaky dough and baked to perfection. They serve many different variations of fillings, and even though I don't eat beef anymore* I made an exception and am so glad I did. The shop was super busy when we got there and they were out of the Cornish pasties but they graciously accommodated us - after a short walk around Mill Street we came back to our tasty treats right out of the oven. They stayed piping hot all the way to the Fairgrounds. Excellent customer service and great fare. I would not hesitate to eat here again. *only exceptions to no beef rule is maybe once a year In n Out burger and even less frequent, carne asada burrito at La Cumbre.

Amy P.

Yelp
The pastry was amazing. But I was not happy with the chucks of food vs shredded. I would have enjoyed it more if it was evenly distributed with veggies/carb and meat and sauce. I got the cousin jacks and their special. Not a local but if I was, perhaps the pork and chicken would have had more sauce.

Emily E.

Yelp
We were visiting from Oregon. We never had a Pasty before. Now we will be craving a flaky crusted Pasty forever!! So good!
google avatar

Lynne M.

Yelp
I haven't bought a pastie in about 10 years. I think this place has changed hands. These pasties are bigger, flakier and already hot in the oven. I had the Vegetable pastie last week. They have added cheese to it. Though tasty I'd prefer no cheese. Today when ordering a pastie I ask if they had a no cheese version. The guy said if I called a day ahead they could do that for me. That was good to know! I got the ham and cheese pastie today and it had big cubes of ham. I really liked it. The pasties are so big they are 2 servings for this lady.

Yelp
Friggin delicious. Always friendly service. Recently managed to deliver a catered meal during a record breaking snow storm. Legendary.

Yelp
Best food ever!!!!!! Nice workers food taste like fancy hot pockets the dough tastes like it was for the queen of England

Matt D.

Yelp
I absolutely love Grass Valley Pasty! Not only do they have the best pasty in town, yes better than Marshalls, they also have the best service too. From someone who is from the UK I can highly recommend their selection from the beef, chicken and even the veggie option is outstanding. I've been coming here whenever I pass by for years and I will always continue to visit and enjoy a wonderful pasty with a smile!

Scott K.

Yelp
I wasn't too familiar with a pasty prior to ordering from them but they are incredibly delicious!
google avatar

Mo G.

Yelp
OMG!! I had the chicken and mushroom pasty the other night for dinner and put one in the freezer! Already pulling it out to eat today for lunch!! Amazing!! So so yummy! Can't wait to go back and try all the other flavors next chance!!!

Wendy M.

Yelp
The very best! I felt like I walked into England 100 years ago. The best atmosphere for this delicacy. My husband and I split the pot roast- heavenly! It was hot, fresh and HUGE! You may want to split if you're older like us. The workers- owners? were sooo friendly. Loved loved loved!
google avatar

Melissa K.

Yelp
The pasty's are amazing and HUGE here. Get there right when they open because they sell out quick!

H G.

Yelp
So delightful and huge portions, quality ingredients, polite and friendly service. They really know what they're doing!
google avatar

D M.

Yelp
Their pasty is tastier than than the competitor a few blocks away and they accept credit/debit cards. As for the pasty, all they offer are good except EXCEPT for Cousin Jack. It's basically 90% potato. If the beef is expensive, add more by using ground beef instead. I won't blame you if you give them 1 or 2 stars because of Cousin Jack pasty. The best and our family favorite is pulled pork and chicken. Another plus is how they are well organized. Packages are pre-labeled instead of writing with a pen or sharpie later. Also, No Microwaving. All pasties are oven baked. Free 3 hr parking is also conveniently across the store.
google avatar

Rich S.

Yelp
This is the place for pasties. We've traveled the world and had pasties in the UK many times. These guys are on point. We tried one of every kind and they were all amazing. Chicken and Cousin Jacks were the favorites, but the veggie was also excellent...and that's coming from a devout carnivore. What really made this place 5-star the the world class customer service. All the staff was so friendly and kind. Anytime we are in Grass Valley, we'll be stopping in!
google avatar

Rebecca M.

Yelp
Don't sleep on this place. Abundant pasty's, kind & accommodating staff and amazing value for seriously tasty food.

Greg G.

Yelp
Delicious!!!!! We drive 1.5 hours and stock up. They freeze well. Best to order ahead and reserve what you want because they can sell out fast. Our favorites are the pulled pork and the pot roast but all are great.

Jennifer W.

Yelp
Love this local joint. Tasty meat pies and the guys there are always friendly and welcoming. My favorite is their Cousin Jack. So sad to have moved away from GV but if I'm ever back I'll def stop by and stock up.

Tanya T.

Yelp
Amazing pasties, filling and full of flavor. We tried the recommended chicken pasty and the guys were right, it was delicious on this rainy and chilly day. We highly recommend this place! Can't wait to try all the other flavors.

Yelp
Walked around the Downtown Grass Valley Car Show earlier today and decided we needed a fulfilling lunch. Jesse and his crew at Grass Valley Pasty totally hooked us up. Delicious. Stuffed. Heavy. Excellent. Thanks a lot Grass Valley Pasty Company. Very good and worth the stop. We'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Suzanne S.

Yelp
Oh my goodness this is soo good! Walking around town we spotted this establishment- didn't look that impressive on the street but once inside and saw the people and production of the pasties being made, we were sold! Fresh out of the oven the meat pies are steaming hot, flavorful, flaky crust melt in your mouth delicious! The man who took my order was polite and professional asking e if this was my first time having one which I said yes; hearing that grass valley is known for their Cornish history. We tried the pot roast and chicken pasties- rave reviews! Devoured them in the car driving back to Auburn definitely would recommend and will be returning!
google avatar

Yelp
My fiancé said "We have to go to Pasty's now that we live here .. get some take out Pasty's ".... Ookkkk ... he said they used to get them all the time when he came up to visit his aunt . Meat , veggies , hot gooey , yummy crust like a calzone but better ! I am no longer a Pasty virgin and will order again soon !
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
Very different from Cousin Jacks, but a very welcome surprise Ordered ahead for two Pasites to go. The food was ready when we arrived and the people working behind the counter were friendly and helpful. The restaurant has a very clean, open and updated look. I love open kitchen designs. You could see how fresh everything looked. The smell of the shop is amazing as well. Both meals were wonderful and filling. Loved the slight crunch of turnips in my Cousin Jack, and the meat was flavorful and great in texture. They also have a cooler with different sodas and water, and preserves for sale. I have family in the area and the old Cousin Jacks was always a tradition during a trip. I'm looking forward to making this a new one!

Linda E.

Yelp
What a great lucky find while cruising around South Lake...Delicious Danish. and wonderful looking sandwiches....Wish I had something like that in the town I live in. Good service also.
google avatar

Micki T.

Yelp
Omg this is the real deal! I got these for my British neighbors and fell in love! High quality from top to bottom. I'm drooling as I write this review
google avatar

Jenny S.

Yelp
My friend and I split a Cousin Jack's, and it was soooooo good. The crust was so flaky and delicious, and the filling was just right. I wanted to go back in and order another kind, but we didn't want to spoil our dinner. We will definitely be back when we're in town next. Can't wait to try more.
google avatar

Lesa K.

Yelp
It's a small shop with a couple seats outside, but don't let that stop you from picking up a couple of pasties to go. So delicious! Prepared right in front of you! Flavors to remember, and for this out-of-towner to long to taste again soon. Yum!

Fran L.

Yelp
I was expecting to be disappointed, because I never see any customers coming nor going. Boy, I was wrong. I had the chicken pasty and it was the best ever. The guys inside were very personable, and the prep area was impeccably clean and orderly. Please go and keep these guys busy. I want to enjoy these pasties forever. The other guys in town are more traditional but I'm not a miner and prefer a pasty with depth of flavor and layers of complexity. These aren't chock-full of onions and salt. I'm looking forward to trying the pulled pork. I did try the pot roast, it was filled with shredded beef, but lacking in seasoning and roast beef flavor. Searing the beef would bring more flavor. But the chicken one is awesome
google avatar

Maisie H.

Yelp
Bought the Cousin Jack's today and it was very good. The shop was very busy and recovering from a sell out day the day before. I liked my pasty and will try them again when in the area, but the spuds needed a few more minutes to cook through and a few thicker parts of the crust was undercooked, overall a 4 and looking forward to trying the chicken one tomorrow.

Gabe A.

Yelp
First off let me start off by saying I love this place. Huge delicious flakey pasties with ingredients sometimes varying depending on what's in season. Everything is made fresh daily, you can literally see the guys making them right there in front of you. They also sell seasonal gourmet food items(locally made pickled garlic and things of this nature). Not much more to say about Grass Valley Pastie Co. It's a pretty cut and dry no frills dining experience for a very reasonable price. The only thing I would change about this place if I could, would be the inclusion of Piroshki to their menu. Piroshki is basically the Slavic cousin of pastie, and is freaking Delicious. It is essentially a pastie, but instead of baking it they deep fry it. The stuffing usually consists of meet, rice, cheese, and maybe some vegetables. There is literally nowhere to get it in Nevada county or anywhere north of Sacramento. I would eat here even more often if I could alternate between piroshki and pasties. Given their success and mastery of the savoury Cornish dinner pastry, I'm sure they could do well with the Russian version as well.
