Grilled Cheese Specialists Add South Bay Shop | Eater San Diego

"Located in Chula Vista’s Otay Ranch community inside the Millenia Commons shopping center, this outpost of Grater Grilled Cheese began as a food truck in 2011 and opened its first storefront in 2014; owners Bernardo and Maya Kanarek plan to relaunch franchising in early 2021. I note they currently operate locations in Mission Valley, Irvine, and Huntington Beach after shuttering their Del Mar Heights outpost earlier this year, and also run a related eatery, Grater Greens, in the Mission Valley area. Deeeeeelicious! I make grilled cheese at home and I feel like I have never had a proper grilled cheese sandwich until today! I don’t know what they did or how they did it! But the flavors and quality of the items we got were spot on! We ordered the 5 cheese sandwich with Mac and cheese and we got a side of fries. Total about 23 bucks! Worth it! I like to see places that make upon order. We waited about 8 minutes to receive our meal . Not too bad seeing that it’s made to order. I would definitely got back.

DO NOT COME HERE!! Worst food I've ever had. I ordered the Birria Mac & Cheese, it came with maybe a tablespoon of birria at most. The Buffalo Fries were even worse, a few burnt pieces of chicken drenched in oily sauce. Nothing like what they advertise. Save your money and go somewhere else please

We wanted to try a different sandwich spot and found this restaurant. We got the Philly cheese steak grilled cheese, Nashville hot grilled cheese, truffle fries and 2 drinks. The food was really good. We were surprised the ketchup was great too. It wasn’t a generic ketchup, there’s a seasoning added that gives the ketchup a peculiar taste.

Good sandwich, strange showdown at the counter. I ordered the lobster and crab grilled cheese — and it was actually pretty good! No complaints about the food. But the customer service… wow. When I walked in, the lady at the front didn’t say a word. I looked at the menu, stood at the register, and we basically had a silent western-style showdown — just staring at each other until I finally broke the ice and said “hi.” She said “hi” back like it was a hostage negotiation. When my food was ready, she simply said “lobster and crab sandwich,” handed me the bag, and… nothing. Not a “thank you,” not a “have a good day.” Just silence. At that point, I refused to say anything either — we were both too deep into it. The sandwich saved the experience, but if I were management, I’d definitely recommend a few social studies or communication classes. A smile and a “hello” go a long way.

So we went twice. The first time we were literally stacked. Doubled meat, doubled spicy pickles - insanely good. Second time, it was good but there was an obvious language barrier b/c the second sandwich didn’t look anything like the one in this photo. But overall, if you get a person that understands what double up means, this place is a have to have as far as grilled cheeses go. The buffalo chicken fries (had the ranch been remembered in the Togo bag) are worth a try!

Called this place on 9/10/25 at 1:10 PM for a Caesar salad with chicken, and the lady on duty told me $33. I said, "What?" and she told me to hold on. Three minutes later, without a word, she just hung up the phone and refused to pick up again. I don't know who was on duty, but y'all just permanently lost customers. Terrible service for just okay grilled cheese sandwiches. Do yourself a favor and save money by buying the three ingredients and making this stuff at home. 👎🏻

Tried to call in an order for a grilled chicken salad and was told it would cost $33. I told the lady taking my order, that's incorrect and she had me "wait a moment" while she fixed it. I waited 3 minutes for her to"fix it" just to be hung up on. My boyfriend and I both tried calling back since we thought the call may have just dropped and no one would pick up after 2 more attempts on my phone and 1 attempt from his phone.

The carne asada fries were so delicious! The fries were crunchy and overall have a very good combination of flavors along with the melted cheese on top. The pastrami grilled cheese sandwich was better than the lobster grilled cheese sandwich. The pastrami had the right amount of mustard and cheese for every bite. The service was efficient and fast. You can order to go or sit inside the small seating area. Parking is just right in front, if it's full there's plenty more parking spots around the lot but it can get busy.

The food was good and came out quick!! If you're not that hungry one sandwich is big enough to share if you get a side. The onion rings were crispy and fresh. I didn't really love the ranch but it was still okay. I've had the lobster grilled cheese before and it was great just as the Philly was. I'll definitely be back to try more!!

I've seen ppl use to hype this place up in Irvine a lot before and stubble across this location I never knew about! Let me say the staff here is very nice. This is probably the only thing I liked was the service. The food was mid to us. We order a lobster grill cheese and birria. We couldn't really taste a flavor to it. Ordered my daughter a Mac and cheese and it tasted like mayonnaise instead. The walls here are kinda dirty as well since we sat instead and ate. The truffle fries were good.

I got the pork belly grilled cheese based upon the reviews here. Phenomenal! One star off because they forgot about my daughter's Mac and cheese. My husband had to ask for it. Everyone else was done by the time she got her lunch. Very hard for a six year old!

For all you potato lovers - This place makes the most delicious POM FRITES in the area !!!! The bestest, best I have tried in a long while . I am not crazy over fries but was craving some today and this did not disappoint. Crunchy on the outside --- well done - Bravo every bite was full of flavor. A MUST TRY! Even if you are not a potato lover you will love this fries ! I will be back to try a grill cheese next time :) ... I didn't order more as I had Luna Grill bowl waiting XD !

Yesterday I announced I wouldn't be eating any more fried foods ... here I am enjoying these perfectly fried onion rings and soooo worth it, yum! Classic 5 cheese grilled cheese was classically oooey and deliciously gooey. Really good tomato basil soup! 10/10. PS even the chilli flakes pickle was yum.

Cheesey goodness! I was greeted promptly and received my food pretty fast. I took my food to go. When I got home, I pulled the sandwich apart and you can see the cheese pull apart. It reminds me of those food commercials with the seductive music HaHa! The side of Mac and cheese was a little bland but all in all, I'd be back.

I ordered a grilled sausage breakfast melt the server fixed my sandwich and didn't tell me they didn't have any eggs she wrote on the box. I didn't see it until I got home and opened the bag. It was a pick up order and she did not mention it stapled the bag and said thank you. I did not get sausage. I got some type of weird seafood smelling type of thing. See the pictures.

Food was great the smash burger was awesome the onions and sauce they put on the burger was great. Fries were awesome. They have crème soda root beer and blackberry soda in addition to the Pepsi products. I was there with my son the two people working there were also great. They brought the food to the table. We'll be back with my wife and daughter to try some other menu selections for a casual burger that is a lot more tastier than the rest try it out. It's really good

It started with the Mushroom Truffle grilled cheese. 5 kinds of cheese on Parmesan crusted sour dough with grilled mushrooms and Truffle "essence" which I smell but honestly can't taste. Then I added a burger patty. It was so good! On the expensive side for fast food, but what isn't these days? At least it was a lot of food and very filling. Giving it 4 stars because the music in the dining room is so loud which also seems to be a fast food restaurant trend.

Okay, update because I had to give this place another try... The birria sandwhich was NOT it, BUT their burgers and that chicken pesto set off fireworks in my mouth. Plus the truffle fries and mac n cheese. Wow! So glad I gave this place another try! Also the strawberry lemonade agua Fresca is love it!!!

Currently disappointed in the price increase in the food. This is such a good place but increasing prices when you're new to the community is insane. I do love the food and it is expensive but for a price increase and cold mac & cheese... it's going to start to drive people away. Disappointed in this change as of now.

Perfectly made Pork Belly, I requested to have more belly I mean the fatty parts, lol and i can taste it is really good. I usually visit this place like maybe 10 times already sonce they open and i like their grilled sourdough bread. For quick Philly cheesesteak this is the place, also just order 1 and 1 fries is good enoigh for a couple, unless you eat like crazy, but its good overall, they are not too busy still because ot is madely fresh you have to wait maybe 20 minutes, its worth tje wait.

I ordered pastrami and philly cheese steak sandwiches, the pastrami was good but it has a lot of pickles in the sauce. The philly cheese was so good, the caramelized onions made it extra special. For the overall value of the food, I'm kinda 50/50, I think a side of chips would have been better for paying almost $30 for 2 sandwiches. The service was slow, which I didn't mind because they make it fresh, I waited for about 15minutes, if you are in a hurry, I suggest you order ahead. The biggest problem I had was witnessing poor hand hygiene from the staff making the sandwiches. The guy scratched his nape with his fingers and using the same fingers, he got some tomatoes and put them on the sandwich. It was gross! I'm glad he was not making my sandwich. Are they not supposed to wear gloves and use tongs on their ingredients? The same hands touch the cash register and then make the sandwiches as well? What if I was from Dept. of Health? I like to support businesses but I will not return to this place.

Very good - decadent, hearty, and filling for sure. I came during off hours in between lunch and dinner - the employees were vibing for sure. That said, they were attentive and efficient. The cashier recommended the Lobster and Philly. I opted for the latter. Super flavorful and crunchy. Could only finish half given the richness but a pretty good option in the area. Sandwich costed about $13 with tax. Indoor and outdoor dining options.

Kids and I had a craving for parmesan truffle fries, so after a quick search on Yelp, I was surprised to find this place sold them. Reading a restaurant which served various grilled cheese sandwiches didn't really scream "truffle fries," so I was surprised to find that not only did they sell them, but they were amazingly good! Crispy and seasoned well, they were a hit for us! So much so, we were done with the fries before we even got home. I'm thankful that its so close to my neighborhood, and the great customer service is an added bonus too. I'm definitely eager to try the sandwiches on the menu next time we're nearby.

I've been here several times within the last year and I have to say that the cost of living has impacted yet another business, forcing them to make changes in order to stay in business. I was here on February 14 and picked up a few items for dinner. The order was placed online in hopes there would be little to zero wait. Upon my arrival, I realized there were only two employees working the shift. I had to wait an additional 15 minutes for my entire order. The cook(s) were making one item at a time while part of my completed order was sitting under heating lamps. The biggest disappointment is the size of the hamburger patties that are being used for their signature burger. It's the same patty used for the kids burger. That's an additional $3.00 for lettuce, tomatoes and spread for their signature burger. Without a doubt, I will not be supporting this business any longer. I will always support a business as long as the good quality of their product remains.

I ordered the birria grilled cheese sandwich, which is supposed to come with consomé (according to the menu), but mine did not. I ordered coleslaw on the side, so I am assuming they assumed the container was the consomé. This was a DoorDash order, which as we know, is inflated. With that being said, the sandwich was dry, and the coleslaw was extremely salty. I tried to call and ask about the consomé, but no one picked up. I had the lobster grilled cheese before, which I enjoyed, and luckily my sister likes her avocado grilled cheese (but there was barely any bacon...)

Grilled cheese is one of my go-to meals and I was so excited to try a place that focuses on grilled cheese! We ordered through Uber Eats delivery, so I cannot review on the actual brick and motor store, but the food we received was well packaged and melt in your mouth delicious! We ordered the following: 1. Buffalo Chicken Fries - Crispy! Tastes great with ranch. 2. Avocado Grilled Cheese with Sauteed Mushrooms - The mushroom add-on costs extra, but pairs well with the avocado. 3. Chicken Pesto Grilled Cheese - Good, although, my least favorite out of the four. 4. Lobster Grilled Cheese - Amazing! Everyone must try this one! The food is heavy, but your stomach will be completely satisfied.

03/13/23 Lunch time! Wanting to eat some good sandwiches. Thank you yelpers!! Located in Otay Ranch town center. Not so busy at the time we were there. Staff was friendly and greeted us upon entering. We ordered La Pastrami cheese grill, chicken pesto sandwich, truffle fries, and a cucumber lime drink. Everything was freshly made and tasted amazing. Place is clean and so is bathroom. Definitely, a stop when we are in San Diego. Happy eats!!

I am from Texas and while I was on a trip out here I decided to try this new restaurant. I drove 30 minute because it looked deliciou. I get here 10 - 15 minutes before they closed and the floor was already mopped and stuff was already put up. They let me walk in with no wet floor sign and while almost slipping I asked them if they were closing. They both looked at me and said yes. I completely understand after a hard day you are ready to go but that is not how you treat a paying & tipping customer.
