Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes in Manchester, New Hampshire | Eater Boston

"Great North Aleworks is a fun craft brewery with an extensive and appealing beer list and personable staff. Upon request, individuals and groups can tour the brewing facility, located in back, and sample the various beers at the tasting area in the front, which has plenty of tables, a bar, and intimate lighting. Aleworks offers a solid, if limited, food menu to accompany the beer tastings." - Ariela Shapiro

We were here for their 9th birthday! I loved their new beer peach tea honey tasted exactly like peaches. We got a flight that came with 5 pours and also got the buff chic dip. The dip had a good flavor and seasoning on chips was top tier. Great atmosphere with plenty of seating! They have a bar, indoor tables and high tops and outdoor patio seating. Plenty of parking. The staff was really friendly and attentive. The live music was a great touch. Had a great time!

Hidden in an industrial park, at the end of the road, you'll find a cool spot for beer with friends or solo. A very warm and welcoming taproom serves between 10 and 12 beers plus guest taps and secret menu items. Great snacks to share either indoors or outdoors. The beers are simple and delicious, a full spectrum of flavors for every palate. One of the nicest and friendly staff in the industry!

Very friendly and hospitable owner and staff, nice tour with very good explanation. Not hesitant to share some details on brewing process. Excellent collection abd variation of beers, several nice tasting.

Google
Clean facility with welcoming staff that is working hard to follow Covid procedures. The beer is always good with a nice selection and fair prices. The food menu is very nice for a brewery I did not eat while there but the menu had all great options. Talk to the staff about small private events and they offer great options looking forward to holding something here in the future.

Google
Great brewery with great service! Our group of three had the Double Orbit IIPA, Snow Cone shandy, Marzen Rover, Tragically Hopped and the Moose Juice IPA. Loved them all, wish we were in town longer to have more beer!

Plenty of outdoor and indoor space with a great variety of brews on tap. The living room section is a nice touch.

Yelp
Great North is truly one of my favorite places to visit in NH. It's fun to stop in on a really busy day and meet some of the other NH residents who share a passion for locally-brewed craft beer. It's just as nice to stop in on a less busy day too as the staff is very friendly and love chatting about the different styles of beer they have. Often the owners of the brewery are right at the bar. A quick chat or even a more in-depth discussion with them will quickly show you how passionate they are about their craft. My friend and I both brew our own beer and they're always asking us about our own recent brews, sharing ideas and giving feedback. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, so even on busy days it doesn't feel cramped. They have live music weekly (Saturdays), board games for the family (as well as board game nights) and plenty of delicious snacks for if you get hungry during your beer sampling. My absolute favorite brew from them is the Tragically Hopped double IPA (available seasonally in mid-summer) Black Bear stout (often available in the winter) and their self-named Great North IPA, which is a delicious West Coast-styled IPA that's just as good drinking on its own as it is with a sandwich (or burger and fries if you see it on tap at a local pub).

Yelp
Solid beer. Nice outdoor patio. Excellent service always. This is a very consistent and reliable brewery to go to.

Yelp
Went here with my girlfriend to celebrate my 21st. Very friendly staff who were knowledgeable and attentive. The beers on tap were delicious and there is a decent food selection. Mostly snack-type, shareable food but perfect for the setting. There are games available for anyone to play and shuffleboard (we brought our own card game). There was live music when we sent (on a Saturday at 4) and she was really good. I would recommend this brewery!!

Yelp
Had a barre class here this morning followed by a beer and tour! It was awesome! My favorite beers were the tye dye and the chocolate milk stout! Staff were super friendly and let you try any before buying a glass. Their tasting room is a good size and clean. They also sell some food too. I heard they also have open mic nights first Thursday of the month!

Yelp
Cute little brewery tucked into a small plaza. There is parking however it was a bit limited due to the bingo hall a few doors down. They are 100% following covid protocols and asked for my information when I entered. The tables are also spread out across the brewery and all employees were wearing masks I got 2 flights- a flight is 4 beers each, and everything tasted pretty good! I went around mid afternoon on a Saturday and there weren't too many people around. Definitely recommend if you're looking to check out a local brewery!

Yelp
Last time I went was about a year or so ago. Stopped by to try a few different beers and hang for a bit. Taproom is nice, really like the style. All the beers I tried were pretty good, best one I had at that time was Moose Juice IPA. Also tried the Tie Dyed Pale Ale, and Robust Vanilla Porter which were good.

Yelp
Excellent brewery! Great variety of beers and mead! Friendly staff and spacious environment for socializing.

Yelp
Great variety on tap. About half the taps were IPAs and the rest were a mix of ales and sours. We shared a flight of all beers amongst 3 of us. That was 15 to 18 different beers. Huge bar with seating and several tables with plenty of space. They have a light food menu.

Yelp
Great tasting room with snacks and games. Large bar and plenty of high top tables. Very decieving from the outside. Lots of great beers to try and a few that you cannot get at the stores Traggicaly hopped is my favorite and vanilla robust porter is the wife's.

Yelp
Great North has a nice tasting room with plenty of seating at the bar, various tables and outdoor seating. The beer is good and employees friendly. We had a meat and cheese board and my son had some Mac & cheese. Both were good.

Yelp
I have been visiting craft breweries for over 20 years now. I am half-Asian and this place was the first time I have ever felt discriminated against. No one would wait on me. I am an educated professional and was polite and said hello when I first came in. A man and two women tended the bar. The man is who I said hello to first as he finished filling a growler. He did seem enthused by my visit. I sat down and one of the women walked by me twice, the third time I almost got a glance from her. I said hi and she rushed away and picked up a clipboard to make her look busy. She walked by 2 more times and waited on people who arrived after me. She would not look in my direction. The other two acted the same way. I glanced around and noticed that I was the only non-white person in the room. I have never felt discrimination before or at least did not perceive it but today I did. They left out a word in their name: Great White North Aleworks. It is a shame because I liked their IPA, looked forward to trying their others and to purchase some cans to share with my friends. This brewery will never earn another nickel from my money, I will never drink another beer of theirs again and I will tell every white and non-white craft beer lover that I know, to stay away from their beers and the brewery. What a shame.

Yelp
Great place. Clean place. Clean crisp beer. Great value. Not too loud. Not too quiet. Serves food. Has board games and card games for use. Will definitely come back.

Yelp
Manchester's newest brewery is off the beaten path but worth a visit. They are doing things right here. The tasting room is a converted office building that now looks clean, sharp and simple. If Great North did one thing that was near perfect, it was the marketing. In my experience, marketing is a major aspect of being a business that most brewers miss the mark on (especially when you're brand new). Anyway, check out this site: http://www.greatnorthaleworks.com . It's sharp, easy to navigate and tells the story well. Most brewery sites can't even come close to this site. The marketing message has the same attention to details when you walk in the front door. They did a great job here. Okay, I know what you're thinking. Enough about the damn marketing! Let hear about the beer!!! I'll only discuss the "year-round" beers. They have a few "special releases." Vanilla Porter- This is off the chain. Well balanced, not overpowering with the vanilla. It's the best beer they do. Poster or stout fan? Start (and finish) here. IPA- This ipa is bold and aromatic. I'm sure it's a big seller given the market for ipa's. Very clean head. Is it the greatest ipa ever? No. But it will hold it's own in a very crowed beer category. Enjoy. Smoked Ale. Very... different. It was by far my least favorite of the pack (I tried all the seasonal too.) My girlfriend couldn't get through this one. The smoky beechwood comes right through it. Like drinking campfire ashes. I'd like to hear your feedback on this one? Is this beer bad or is my palate just not sophisticated enough to understand it? Only time will tell.

Yelp
Five Stars for sure! Great beer, especially the award winning Great North IPA. But do not overlook the Tye Dyed, Robust Vanilla Porter, and my favorite Moose Juice! They have a nice food sampling of cheese boards, pretzels, chips and salsa or queso. All good and reasonably priced. The atmosphere is bright and clean, open and friendly. That goes for the staff too! It's a family friendly place; lots of board games for the kids, both young and old. There's always something new to try. Rotating IPAs, visiting brewers, a frikin cask (ask the staff about it). Simply the best micro brewery in the area. Give it a try. They keep us coming back!

Yelp
Stopped in to try the beers of this local brew house! The Great North IPA is excellent, but so too is the Porter. You'll either love it or hate it, but one thing I promise you, it tastes just like bacon! Holy Moly Batman...BACON!

Yelp
Great North Aleworks might be one of the better breweries in New England and is so far my favorite in NH. The taproom is hard to find, located at the back of a huge industrial complex behind a set of opaque glass doors. Inside, you will find a spacious taproom that is about as pleasant as can be considering the almost complete lack of natural light. All of the beers are good, even the vanilla porter which is a style I normally hate. I probably wouldn't get a six pack of it, but I can respect this beer. The IPA and pale ale are world class, with the pale ale being my favorite. This should be on tap at beer bars (or any bars) across the region. Despite the out of the way location and lack of natural light, I can see myself hanging out here for a while. Worth the drive from Boston.

Yelp
Very clean. Great atmosphere. Staff was super friendly. Love that they have games for the family to play while hanging out. Definitely kid friendly. We had the salsa con queso which was awesome. Pretzel with maple mustard was a great addition as well.

Yelp
Nicely done tap room & friendly, knowledgeable staff. The growler fills are the most reasonable in the area.

Yelp
What an interesting place. Stopped in to pick up something different, and was very surprised. Clean, crisp atmosphere, tasty brews, felt good to walk in. I wasn't sure what I wanted, so the bartender gave me a sample before I finally decided on RVP (Robust Vanilla Porter) for the wife and Smokin' Rauchbier for myself. Both were tasty and high on flavor. We will be returning for sure.

Yelp
Another great NH brewery. Love their IPA, Robust Vanilla Porter, Smokin' Rauchbier. The Chocolate Milk Stout is delicious too.

Yelp
If you're into the craft beer scene, you definitely have to check Great North Ale Works out. Joe is super friendly and gave a nice tour of the facility. The beer was awesome! The tie dye in particular was my favorite (at this time) but I also really enjoyed the Robust Vanilla Porter and the IPA. Great tap room with lots of space to sit and have a pint with friends. Pints for $6 and flights for $7.50 are definitely reasonable given the quality of the beer. I also really liked that their menu had a list of games on the back that you could play while enjoying your beer - a fun idea that definitely adds to the experience. Will absolutely return!

Yelp
What a wonderful new and up and coming brewery! The owners are very welcoming and pleasant. The variety of beers are very delicious. There's something for everyone. They also have a snack menu, which isn't something you often find in new breweries. The atmosphere, which includes a large stainless steel bar, many tables for seating, an easy-to-read menu, gift shop with a large selection of products to buy, is aesthetically pleasing and very modern. My husband and I are looking forward to returning and bringing with us friends and family.

Yelp
Vanilla Stout is OUT of this World!!!! So many flavors jump out. Friendly knowledgeable

Yelp
Friendly with great tasting beer. Unassuming place in an industrial park. Limited hours and snack menu. I like that they have games you can ask to play like King of Tokyo (a fave of mine).

M M.

Yelp
Great North is on the short list for top breweries in NH. They have very innovative beers that are all high on flavor. Their RVP (Robust Vanilla Porter) is the best Porter I have ever tasted in my entire life. Because of places like this and Able Ebenezer, NH is now on the map for having great beer and great breweries. It's not just VT anymore with big flavorful beers.
