On the Grid : Green City Market

"Green City Market is the only year round farmers market in Chicago. It focuses on sustainable agriculture practices and locally sourced ingredients. In the winter months, it is held at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, and in the summer just outside of the Lincoln Park Zoo. Not only are you able to shop some of the finest crops the midwest has to offer, but also mingle with a generous and caring community of farmers and growers." - Stephen Merlo

Designing Culinary Gardens Is Sara Gasbarra’s Dream Job | Eater

"A premier Chicago farmers market known for its volunteer program and a 5,000-square-foot educational garden, it functions as a community hub for farmers, chefs, and shoppers focused on seasonality and sustainability. The market runs programming and field trips and serves as an experimental space for unusual heirloom varieties; images shared from the garden helped connect growers with chefs and restaurateurs, leading to commissions for on-site restaurant gardens." - Morgan Goldberg

Google
The best way to spend a Saturday morning! It’s one of the smaller farmers markets in the city, but in my opinion, that’s what makes it so great. There’s a wide selection of locally grown produce, fresh flowers, and baked goods. This year they moved the vendors from the park to the street, which opened up a lot of space in the park for people to sit. It’s right next to the dog park too, so expect to see plenty of pups.

Saw my first parsnip, I really thought they were made up video game vegetables. Crazy, world-shattering even. Had to buy some pastries, fresh pasta, and mushrooms to cope.

Google
Green City Market West Loop has various fruits, vegetables, flowers and hand made wares. Today's mission: fresh bread and farm raised meats. @bennisonscakes.com had what I was looking for. Scored sandwich chabbadah rolls, a seven grain baguette and a cheddar cheese loaf. all breads were crusty, chewy and delicious.

Great place for fresh vegetables, fruits & flowers from farms in the morning hours on Saturdays.

Fresh fruits and vegetables. Great place to go with kids, clean and safety. The most important thing you'll find friendly people!

Picked up a variety of apples that you don't see in grocery stores. Can't wait to go home and do a tasting. Saw a great variety of mushrooms and fresh cheese at other tents but it started raining and I had to go. Next time.

This is usually the highlight of my Saturday! There’s coffee, fresh cut flowers, veggies, meat, cheese and more. Other local business stop by from time to time as well, and a visit to the local farmer’s market is a great way to start a Saturday. I recommend going before about 10:30 for the best and freshest selection.

Yelp
I visited a couple months back and this was my favorite part of my trip. I had such a wonderful experience here, the food was delicious and the park was gorgeous, everyone was so nice!

Yelp
This Green City Market located in the west loop is soooooo much easier than dealing with the craziness that exists in Lincoln Park on Saturdays. While I love the LP green city farmers market, it's incredibly crowded and if you have a car, good luck finding parking. This west loop location is smaller. There are fewer venders here than the other location, but there are far less people and finding parking isn't difficult at all. The park is also beautifully shaded and hilly. Clusters of tents are spread out a bit. You could miss a few if you don't walk around. As much as I love all of the bakery representation at the LP location, I will frequent the green city market in the west loop instead. It's so much less of a headache

Yelp
Green City Market is a small market in the West Loop. It's super close to my apartment, so my dog and I often visit early in the morning to kick off our weekend. The market only has a few vendors, but they are really great. I love going to look at the flowers and usually grab a pastry and coffee to take home. There are several produce and meat/egg stands, but I find everything to be a little too pricey for me to justify buying much. However, they do triple match Illinois Link! I wish the market had a few more vendors, as it gets crowded quickly and the lack of competition favors the high prices, but it is a nice thing to do each weekend. I appreciate that it is dog friendly so I can bring my dog with me to get some socialization in.

Yelp
We take the puppers to the dog park at Mary Barteleme Park nearly everyday. 6 days a week they get to have their fun with all the other pups at the park. Oooooooo! But on Saturday mornings we get in on the fun at Green City Market which sets up in the park with many vendors offering a variety of fresh produce, coffee, and tasty treats among other goodies. Our favorites are Kikwetu Kenyan Coffee and Baked Cheese Haus. Kikwetu offers great coffee as well as their signature flavors. We love the Lavender Bee and the Bourbon BAE. The lavender bee has great lavender taste with honey and oat-milk mixed with their cold brew. This is soooo good! The bourbon BAE has maple aged in bourbon barrels mixed with milk and their cold brew. This is awesome! While you are enjoying the coffee, wander back past all the other vendors to the far end of the park and check out Baked Cheese Haus. The Raclette sandwiches here are truly special! They are served on a generously sized baguette and come in several versions. We love the Traditionnel which comes with the luscious melted Raclette cheese accented with spring onions, baby gherkins, and Dijon mustard. So much anticipation as the melty goodness is scraped off the wheel of cheese onto the waiting bread! Delicious! There are also other options with the Jambon Fume which adds smoked ham and the Suisse Champignon with its sautéed mushrooms. Any of the three are very tasty. Too bad the Green City Market only happens once per week. Everyday should be Kikwetu coffee and Raclette sandwich day! Yum!

Yelp
I visited here for the first time last week and was pleasantly surprised to see a wide variety of vendors from coffee stands, to bakers, to fruit and vegetable farmers, cheese makers, eggs, meats and more! I had never even heard of some of the vegetables that were there which made for a fun experience. I heard that on the weekends the market is even bigger and better! I will be returning!

Yelp
DO NOT go to Bennison's Bakery! The employees are so rude and ignored us while we were standing in line for 10 minutes and then took someone else's order who came way after before us! They also let us wait there the whole time and didn't tell us their card machine wasn't working until we had our order in our hands and after all that time we had to set it down and just walk away.

Yelp
So very happy to have this in my neighborhood. Please spread the word in the West Loop and support this wonderful farmers market. I can get all of the things I need to prepare a fabulous, seasonal meal and it's just blocks from my apartment. The hardest thing is limiting my purchases to what I can carry home on my bike! Please tell all your friends and neighbors to check it out!

Yelp
Easy to walk to or park spot in the west loop. High quality heirloom tomatoes, squash, peaches, and other fruits/veggies. Since I found the market, I buy so much here every week that I can't even eat it all over the week! Prices are very reasonable for organic and quality is very high.

Yelp
A great location that meets an empty spot in the West Loop. Fresh fruit, vegetables, and everything else you'd expect to find at your local farmers market is here. Let's hope it takes off!

Yelp
This market is very small. Not many vendors but it has a great selection of vegetables. I stopped by on a nice summer day and bought lots of heirloom tomatoes! I would go here again.

Yelp
First time checking out the Green City Market on Fulton. Small but nice Famers Market for a early morning Saturday stroll. Was hoping for more flower venders, mostly fruits and veggies, a local pie shop and bread company. Walking distance from Glazed and Infused donut shop along with a few good restaurants for brunch/lunch. Picked up beautiful Tuberose, I would definitely check out the market again to see if the venders change weekly.

Yelp
Finally!!! A neighborhood farmer's market! Not quite as big as the Lincoln Park one but has a great selection of vendors. My favorite is the first one to the left of the entrance, their fruits & veggies are super fresh and excellent quality. As soon as I bit into the cantaloupe I vowed to never eat another supermarket one. Love!!!

Yelp
This place is amazing! Love the food and the ambiance. It's the perfect place to hangout with friends and stuff your belly with delicious food. It's great for big groups. Our party of 18 was well accommodated and everyone had a great meal. My only distasteful experience was be movie they were playing on a giant screen. They were playing A Clockwork Orange where there's a scene of a woman being raped by a group of men. She was completely naked and our table was so overwhelmed we almost all got up and left. They immediately turned to another movie. I wonder if they would not have if we didn't complain about it, but I'm glad they did. It just shocked me that they would choose to show a movie where a woman was being raped and completely in the nude. I'm so glad the family with kids left 30 min prior to that scene. Will definitely come back for more. Unless that movie is playing.

Yelp
This market is great. It is small enough to be stress free yet there is a variety of fruits and vegetables, baked goods and flowers and I always can find what I want. There is parking for a fee and the Halsted bus stops right on the corner of Fulton & Halsted. It's a neighborhood market that's big enough for the West Loop. The only thing I would like to see is someone selling herbs. Nichols has them sometimes, but I would like to see someone who has them every week. It meets all my criteria for a great farmers market: Has a diverse range of high quality foods - check Connects me with local producers and farmers - check Supports small family farms - check Vendors are passionate about their products and share knowledge with customers - check This week I got smart and brought my grocery cart so I could load up on honey crisp apples. Hope the market is back again next year.
