Oakland Chinatown Food Businesses Stand in Solidarity With Black Lives Matter Protesters - Eater SF

"Finnie Phung, co-owner of Green Fish Seafood Market (formerly E & F Market) on Eighth Street, says she grew up in Oakland and feels she has a better understanding of the challenges facing the Black community than more recent Asian immigrants — and beyond that, she says, her shop has a lot of Black customers, especially during the local crab season." - Luke Tsai

Google
We dropped by while in Chinatown Oakland to pick-up our groceries and some prepared foods. we found great prices, and selection on fruits, vegetables, fresh meat and seafood. They were busy but did the best they could for us! There was so much selection of produce that they built a pavilion onto 8th Street. I enjoyed the fresh butcher area where they cut your fresh selection, and that they offered specialty Asian produce such as taro roots, winter melon, kombucha melons, etc. Parking in the area can be challenging but the BART station is just a short walk from Chinatown.

Google
If you're looking for fresh seafood at lowest prices then this might be the place. Small, crowded and somewhat unorganized but that is how most Asian supermarkets are. In return, foods are fresh and cost much less than typical Safeway. Just don't expect the service of Safeway either and social distancing is none existing, just a head up for those never shop at Asian markets.

Google
In search of fresh fish and produce, I stumbled across this market in China Town of Oakland, CA. Smiles are issued upon arrival with so many awesome prices on fresh fruits, veggies, live fish, crab, clams, and other meat selections. This place stays busy with a steady flow of customers.

Google
We buy humongous live carp here for our annual Slovakian Christmas Eve dinner. Veselé Vanocé Pepí K As always, to achieve the most delicious flavoring, be sure or let it cleanse itself in the tub for a day or two before eating.

Google
Seafood is the main thing, but right out from they have 3 boxes of blueberries for $1 :..how can you do better??

V J

Google
Fresh seafood. I am a bit shocked that they have live frogs. Exotic place to shop of you are not from China. I bought some live blue crabs.

J P

Google
Reasonably priced but it won’t be reasonable anymore if you’re buying from the owner. The guy is rude and pushy to the point that it was difficult for me to push back, which I should have. It feels like I’ve been scammed by the owner! I told him I wanted live good crabs and he said they just came in the morning and all live. I wanted good ones but it felt strange that he was just bagging the crabs and did not even give me a chance to look at them! My instincts were right but I did not push back to avoid any conflict and more harassment from the owner. Got home and one crab was barely moving, all 5 of them with missing legs, some even had 4 legs missing. I will never go back to that store! How can a business survive long term when the owner is mistreating and cheating customers? WHAT COMES AROUND, GOES AROUND!!!

Google
Simple, fresh seafood, abundance of options, high quality, friendly and accommodating staff.

Yelp
Whenever I visit this place, I consistently hear what I believe is the owner yelling at the elderly employees, referring to them with derogatory terms in Chinese. I feel for the staff. Along with the repulsive environment inside the place, I have a strong dislike for this man... he wouldn't be anything without the employees.

Yelp
I plan and look forward to going to the Green Fish Seafood, when in the Bay Area. The service is good. The store is always busy with customers. The price of dungeness draws me there, but I love the atmosphere. The sites sounds and smells of. I love our Asian neighbors.

Yelp
Best kept secret in Chinatown! $5/pound for crab is an absolute steal. Fresh from Santa Cruz, I was happy to hear that it was local and fresh. Look at that tub! He helped picked out 3 nice crabs- ended up being $30. After you purchase they can clean it and cut it for you behind the seafood counter. They also had live frog (?!) and Manila clams! Love chinatown

Yelp
This a great shop for groceries if you're not picky. Don't come here expecting to complete your grocery checklist. Typically this shop sells vegetables that are in season. There is s small section of bargain items, which are past their prime but still edible if cooked the day of purchase. These are good deals these days with prices rising for everything for every daily essential. For meat items, the do sell beef and chicken bones for soup. In the middle section there's a freezer for presliced meats, ie lamb, beef, and pork, which is great for hot pot. And in the back there's the seafood selection, where you'll see some in water tanks and some laid out on a bed of ice.

Yelp
If you need produce, fruits, meats and seafood, you can probably find what you need at this market located on 8th St between Webster and Harrison. Outside, the store had large displays of fruits and vegetable on the sidewalk and on curb lane. The prices appear to be less that other stores in the area and the quality of the products are first quality as well. Sometimes you will find some great deals. Inside, they have display cases of packaged fresh meats, freezer with frozen meats and seafood section with live fish and shellfish in tanks and fish displayed on beds of crushed ice. There are three registers to pay and sometimes it can be slow many customers are checking out many items. But this is a good market to get your produce, veggies, meats and seafood.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
My go-to for fruits and vegetables. Decent array of options. Prices are good. No fuss, no complications. Pay cash with the ladies at the register and you're on your way.

Yelp
Fresh fish and some dead in the water. I asked for halibut filets and got filets of tails. First time I went their the files were beautiful. I'm not knowledgeable enough, and I don't speak Hispanic. So it's particularly my fault.

Yelp
The best place for fresh Dungeness crab when the season opens. But get there right when they open to avoid the lines. I also go here for regular groceries and stop by to see what fruits and veggies look good. Sometimes they have a fresh and unique catch like live prawns. They also have a specific fridge area with all dumpling ingredients right when you walk in.

Carrie G.

Yelp
THE PRICE OVER THE PHONE ISNT THE PRICE IN STORE. This is not the first time this has happened. I called yesterday and I was told $6.99 lb. Go this morning $8.99. Like WTH. If I hadn't been on the hook for a party I wouldn't have bothered and looked else where. The three stars are for the quality and service. The guys don't speak much English but they know what to do. The crabs are cut and cleaned to my liking and always fresh and big.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, but I was not impressed with their Covid protocols, which are pretty much nonexistent on the weekend. Too many people inside and nobody observed any social distancing while waiting in line to pay for their purchases. The store is very narrow, so it's very hard to control people when they get in. The Dungeness crabs that I bought were very good and the service at the counter was polite. I saw a bushel of blue crabs, but they all looked deceased. When I come during the weekdays it's less crowded, and it's much safer. They accept credit cards which is not a given in Oakland Chinatown. They seem to have a wide range of seafood, and some vegetables out front.

Yelp
This is a wonderful place to shop for fresh seafood or fruits and vegetables. The prices are incredibly low for the quality of their products and the speed at which they help customers is impressive.

Taneshia J.

Yelp
BEWARE!!!!! Zero Stars!!!! I went here and bought some crab. I paid with EBT card and they had a skimmer on their machine. They skimmed all of my money for food off my card and more. Do not use anything other than cash if you go here!!!!!!

Julia P.

Yelp
zero stars. prices are reasonable but it won't be reasonable anymore if you buy directly from the owner. beware and stay away from him. he harasses his employees and customers, and cheats them too. he is so rude and pushy to the point that it makes it difficult to push back. lesson learned, never again ---- bought some crabs and told him to give me nice, live ones. tells me rudely, they are all alive, they jus came in this morning. he was so quick in putting the crabs in the bag that i didn't have time to check the quality. it felt strange as i knew the owner can be shady. i should have pushed back but too late, my bad, gave him the benefit of the doubt. came home with one crab, barely moving, almost dead. all crabs did not have a complete set of legs!!! go somewhere else who will treat you better and not scam you. avoid that owner eric!

Michael C.

Yelp
The products are fresh and unique, make it worth the extra stop or inspiration for a meal. Staff are very friendly and eager to share their best deals. Definitely a welcome addition to the neighborhood, much better than the previous produce stand. Very clean!

Yelp
This was the most unpleasant shopping experience I've had in a long time. At 5:00 pm New Year's Eve 2019 (12/31) I went in to Green Fish Seafood Market looking for fresh crabs to bring home for a good New Year's Eve dinner. The worker proceeded to scoop some up from the tank. He took some really alive ones up but immediately put them back in the tank. I thought that was odd but gave him the benefits of the doubt. (I thought maybe he was trying to look for ones that are even more fresh for me.) It took awhile, but eventually he found one that seems to satisfy him. He put the crab immediately inside two brown paper bags and an outer plastic bag and tied it with a dead knot. He really didn't want me to see what crab he picked I guess. That didn't sit well for me. I opened the bags up right away when I get to my car and found the crab was not moving at all. I went back inside and let the same worker know about it. I asked for exchange for something more fresh. I came here for live crabs, not dead ones. So when I get a dead one for the price of live ones, naturally I get unhappy. The worker respond by saying there is no refund or exchange once the product is out of the door. I felt that I was deceived. It may not seen like a big deal but it ruined the mood for my whole New Year's Eve. I don't mind paying more for fresh seafood, but don't give me dead ones while advertising them as live ones. That is dishonest and fraudulent.

Yelp
The freshest fish are the ones that are swimming around right before they hit the stove. And there are lots of fish swimming here. A much larger selection than the other live seafood vendors. Plus a large choice of fresh but dead fish. They're more like Ranch 99 than other small shops. I went in to get the usual whole bass or tilapia to cook on the grill. Eric suggested two others (bonito and branzini). Both were good. The branzini was the favorite. Prices are excellent - I got more than enough to feed 8 people for under $40, including some oyster mushrooms and other produce. These places can seem exotic and intimidating to first timers but the selection, quality and prices are worlds better than supermarkets and most meat markets. They will scale, clean and fillet at no charge. Ranch 99 goes all the way to frying, but that's not an option here. On Fridays, there's a downtown Farmer's market a few blocks away (near Broadway and 11th) with much easier parking than Chinatown.

Cynthia S.

Yelp
Lovely to have an excellent fish and produce store move into the neighborhood. There is an excellent selection of fresh fish and what we purchased was excellent. Worth giving this new store a try. We will certainly go back often.

Bob W.

Yelp
Last time I was here I picked up some fruit for $2.99 a pound and a few minutes later the owner dropped the price to $1.99 a pound so I got a few more. Then as I got in line to pay, I think he noticed I had a bag of fruit in my hands and about to pay and sneakily changed the sign back to the $2.99 price and so I ended up having to pay the higher price even though the price had dropped. I left and dropped the stuff back in my car and came back and noticed he changed the sign back to $1.99... so he waited until I paid to drop the price again. I was disappointed that the owner changed the price so I had to pay more even though he dropped the price. As a result of the incident, I haven't shopped here in 5 years, I tend to avoid this store now after this experience. Because of the actions of the owner to get $5 more of my money, they have lost out on the thousands that I would have spent at their store. Before the incident I would spend over $200 a month at their store..

Yelp
Saw the reviews and decided to check it out for some crabs. I typically drove to 99 Ranch Market in a Richmond but didn't feel like making a trip out that way so I decided to look for something local. So glad I did! I arrived about 8:30ish when they first opened and I was in and out. Crab was much cheaper than Ranch 99 and didn't have to waste gas driving so far just to get what I can for half the distance and much cheaper! The only thing I would do differently is ask them to get me big live crabs. I bought 8 crabs but notice that there were couple of them that are nice in size while the others were smaller and some had missing legs. I will just have to be more vocal but will definitely go back!

Yelp
Called before I could finish my question they answered yes and hung up in my face. How rude! I will not be going here.

Yelp
Green Fish Seafood Market takes E & F Market's spot. still looks cramped like before. too many people in one space for my comfort. fyi, the fish in the tanks have more breathing room than the shoppers on the outside! offerings: fresh fruits, vegetables, live/frozen seafood, fresh poultry, beef, pork, lamb, buys: banana: 4 lbs/ $1 -green looking. green is the new yellow now. take outs: -passed on the upside down swimming rock cod 6.99/lb. not sure if this is normal. it looked me in the eye too!

Yelp
This is our regular spot to get fresh crab. Lots to choose from and helpful staff will make sure you get good feisty ones.

Yelp
I'm writing this review not based on the food quality or the ambiance, but because of must-notice thing. I recently became very addicted to NBC's Fresh Off the Boat, and there was this episode where they talked about the Wall of Shame. Basically taking pictures of customers to not serve in the future because of a specific thing they did. This, I thought, only appeared in movies, until now. This place should be a landmark. The wall is honestly legendary. They have $500 fine if you are caught stealing, and a $1000 fine if you are a regular customer caught stealing. The funniest part is that they take a picture of you and post it on their Wall of Shame so everyone can see. Wow, and you can actually see the people's faces. Everything here is pretty good price, but honestly that Wall is the thing to see. It is located right behind the cashier area, so definitely make sure to check it out if you come here. It will blow your mind.

GG L.

Yelp
Be cautious when you buying seafood, and supermarket owner give you the dead crab. One day I walked passed the store and want to buy two crabs. The store owner is standing next to the crab bin. I asked him to get me two big crab. He start searching in the bottom of the bin and put two dead crab in the brown bag. After I get home and open the brown bag, crabs has strong fishy smell, and when you press the belly of the crab, it's soft. I paid for the price of live crab, but the owner gave me dead crab. This is ridiculous. Will not buy seafood from this store again.

Yelp
Despite some of the negative reviews here, I had a great experience shopping during the height of Chinese New Year's, buy 15 small New England lobsters at 2:00 in the afternoon. Out of 15, 2 had only 1 claw, but I intentionally bought extra lobsters, just in case, so it did not matter. Of course, if you're going to shop later in the day, especially on the eve of a major holiday, you might find things have been picked over, but I got a variety of sizes from 1 lb to 1.75 lb and they were still sweet and delicious! I had originally gone up the street to the New Sang Chong Market, which was supposed to have better, and cheaper, seafood. But they tried to make me buy lobsters with only one claw, or one baby claw. And when I said "No", they tried to get me to buy a 5 lb+ lobster. I finally walked out and walked down the block to Green Fish. Sure beats a long drive to New England Lobster in Burlingame and back!

Randy W.

Yelp
Crabs are in! $8.99/lb which is a good price for the big ones. They accept credit cards.
google avatar

Balder S.

Yelp
I totally support this place during our hard Covid times cause they seem to be trying to get us the freshest ingredients to put on our table an if a business is trying I totally support them.

Yelp
Unfriendly vibe, long lines and store a little unorganized.

Yelp
My first time here, a wonderland man with a cute hat assisted us on our adventure day! We got Strawberry's for $1.99 and these plums called Golden and I forgot the other one, the total for plums cane out to $2.89 Yo!!! I will be coming back, and there very clean and great seafood selection, we where stuck on the LIVE Turtle :-( DUDE!!!

Yelp
It was my first time coming to a place like this and I was a little nervous. I got lucky with parking and found a spot just around the corner. It was pretty crowded when I went but nothing crazy. I wasn't sure if I was allowed to get the seafood myself or not, so after standing around awkwardly and observing other shoppers, I used the provided tongs to pick up 2 live crabs. Checking out was easy and the lady at the checkout could tell it was my first time and let me pay with card despite the $30 minimum. Those 2 crabs only cost me $5.48! I will definitely be back for more fresh seafood.
google avatar

Lily Z.

Yelp
Yelp's categories are correct for this market. They only sell meat, seafood and veggies/fruit. No canned or boxed goods here. The front can get very crowded which makes it hard to get in. There aren't many signs in English so you're better off pointing and guessing what it is. My dad comes here for the striped bass at $9/lb.
google avatar

Timothy M.

Yelp
The best fresh seafood, especially Dungeness crabs in OAKLAND. Great prices, amazing selection. Always my go to for fresh in season crab.
google avatar

George L.

Yelp
One of the Oakland Chinatown markets with fresh produce, occasionally organic produce, seafood, meats. There are deals daily changing with what shipments come in.
google avatar

Glenn L.

Yelp
Crab! Came in on NYE and bought three crabs (about 5 lbs total). Good lively ones too. The guy grabbing them out of the tank showed us each one (he made to grab ones with all of their legs). No holiday price gouging! Cooked up, the crab meat was really sweet. Lots of meat.
google avatar

Denny H.

Yelp
Tons of super fresh seafood and great value produce. The best thing about this place is that you can pick and choose the fresh seafood you want. Finnie and Eric are very helpful and knowledgeable about the products as well.
google avatar

Eva Y.

Yelp
Heart the Asian seafood, fresh, and the meat counter here! The veggie selection is limited but it's not too bad. They also have geoduck, spot prawns, bass, cod, you name it, they have it. I also love the chicken selection!

sumaya g.

Yelp
Best price for live crab. Really liked the customer service. Market was extremely crowded early Saturday morning. Smiles abound! Folks were extremely courteous. All the seafood we purchased was extremely fresh!
