Mary H.K. Choi on Her Novel ‘Permanent Record’ and the Best Bodega Snacks | Eater

"A surprisingly large, 24-hour organic food store and deli in the Gowanus area of Brooklyn that feels bigger-than-bodega and blends ready-made convenience with an upscale, international snack selection. Shelves and cases are stocked with ready-made sushi and dumplings, counter-service sandwiches, hot Korean dishes like kimchi fried rice, and aisles overflowing with fresh avocados, Tate’s cookies, and an almost comical variety of ketchups and packaged treats from around the world. The store functions as a late-night hub — its graveyard-shift deli culture and inventive “Hot Snacks” ethos inspired the fictional deli in Mary H.K. Choi’s novel Permanent Record — and attracts adventurous, foodie-minded customers looking for nostalgic imported snacks, quick Korean comfort dishes, and inventive late-night meals. The author, a former local shopper, navigates the selection like an expert, praising particularly toothsome items such as milk chocolate with cornflakes and Australian licorice, underscoring the shop’s eclectic, multicultural appeal." - Jenny G. Why Oh

Google
A salad bar employee was pressuring me to purchase damaged lettuce in a prepackaged container. Fresh lettuce is not exchanged by the staff. He claimed that after I had to purchase the lettuce and pay $10 initially for it to be cut, the camera came out it was now only $5. My salad, they claimed, would cost $20, because their lettuce had gone bad. The guy followed me to the cash register. Attempted to add his $5 to the lettuce head of bill $2. I am being charged for his job description since he claims that there is no other way to pay him $5 through an input at the register.

We stayed at Town place and had a mini kitchen in our room. So this was my go to for groceries. Perfectly normal grocery store had just minimal amount of stuff which is all we needed. Had fresh fruit, which is our favorite. And little snacks. The one thing I couldn't find is like a pre-cooked Chicken meat, some thing of that nature. Something you might find at Trader Joe's. But all in all, I thought it was great. I spoke to someone who worked there when I was checking out and they were very pleasant. I always bring my own bags, no matter where I'm going. And I understand that prices are higher in certain areas. But I didn't buy any premade sandwiches or juices. There was a picture of the things that we bought came to around 70

DO NOT COME HERE!!! The store sales a lot of expired stuffs, we are already not trusting them. Our friends visited and brought us 3 pack of mochi. The mochi were all melted and gone bad. We went and asked for a refund, they offered us store credit or wait in store for manager to come to approve the refund. We waited for 20mins and no one came, eventually we can’t wait any longer and was kind of forced to use the credit. I would highly suggest do not come here for groceries.

Had 2 weeks in Brooklyn and stopped here for breakfast every morning. The gentlemen in the deli are fantastic and always have a laugh (regardless of my Auzzie accent). The shop has gorgeous flowers lining the outside with a range of great fruit. Prices are cheap as can be and there are deals everyday. Plenty of Asian ingredients too if you're after something in particular. Love it here :)

I stayed in the TownePlace hotel right around the corner from Green Ivy and it quickly became my daily stop for a sandwich, salad, etc. They had the very beat blackberries I have ever eaten and a fabulous beer selection. Clerks were friendly and I really wish my neighborhood had a Green Ivy!

I wanted to love this grocery store. They have a variety of products and a lovely fruit selection. The issue I have is that when I purchased a cold press juice and realized it was sour, I tried to return it and they were extremely hesitant to give me a refund. When I told the worker that my stomach was hurting and showed him that I hadn’t drank much of the juice, he tried to give me a 3 dollar pack of tums and pay me the difference. The refund didnt sum up to what I was actually owed in the end. It’s not about the money though, more of the principle. Terrible customer service and terrible moral.
