"One of San Francisco’s most elegant waterfront restaurants, this many-windowed Fort Mason cathedral has long served as a beachhead for vegetarian cooking. Under chef Katie Reicher, who has helmed the kitchen for a decade, collaborative dinners with new-school pros like Lion Dance Cafe and the ever-popular Mister Jiu’s keep the ship sailing, serving food people really want to eat — vegetarian or not. Opened in 1979 by the San Francisco Zen Center, it’s arguably where the country’s love of fancy, farm-to-table, plant-forward food was born, and Reicher’s steady hand continues that legacy, giving vegetables the loving Bay Area treatment and proving they can — and do — taste good." - Paolo Bicchieri

"It doesn’t get much more classic than this: at $22 it’s the most expensive of my long‑list picks, but the lentil‑mushroom patty and avocado crema also make it one of the most iconic in the city." - Paolo Bicchieri

"The landmark vegetarian restaurant opened in 1979 as part of the SF Zen Center. Not only is Greens a California classic, it’s a big and beautiful space, with views of the bay and Golden Gate Bridge. Since the beginning the restaurant’s had a long history of women leaders including founding chef Deborah Madison, Annie Somerville, and current executive chef Katie Reicher, who continues the legacy of showcasing seasonal vegetables grown on nearby farms." - Paolo Bicchieri

"This groundbreaking vegetarian restaurant first opened as part of the San Francisco Zen Center in 1979. It was a pioneer of Californian farm-to-table cooking in the 1980s and 1990s, with all due respect to the legendary nut loaf. Today, it’s still well worth a visit to Fort Mason, where it serves fresh vegetable soups, salads, pasta, pizzas, and more in a warehouse space with views of the bay, bridge, and headlands. Next-door neighbor Radhaus is well worth hitting for the views, too." - Paolo Bicchieri

"Greens is a vegetarian spot on Fort Mason with massive windows overlooking the water. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a sea lion floating around while you split cornmeal crust pizza, vegan spring rolls, and seasonal salads. We like coming here for an extra long lunch to enjoy a couple of natural light-filled hours while sipping on fancy tea. And if you want to continue the sea lion spotting, head next door to Radhaus for a German beer and the same views." - julia chen 1, patrick wong, ricky rodriguez
