The Best Imitation Foods and Faux Dishes in London Restaurants | Eater London

"The necessity that brought Alheira sausage — a soft web of bread, garlic, paprika, and poultry designed to mimic pork sausage — into the world is of a different category to the other dishes on this list. Jews who had fled the Spanish Inquisition for Portugal, and found themselves persecuted once more in their new home, were the inventors of this unusual delicacy. A community in hiding, they created a poultry sausage that could hang from their ceilings, just as Christians dried and displayed their pork sausages. These days, the once clandestine recipe has been absorbed into, and transformed, by wider Portuguese cuisine. Many versions of the popular sausage now contain pork, and at Snack Bar Grelha Douro, this smoky horseshoe is best eaten with bread for cutlery, eyes glued to the football." - Hester van Hensbergen

Dining as a family of six, we found this place to be perfect for those who love homemade food, Portuguese culture, and local dining. The owners were incredibly warm and welcoming, especially since we were there with our puppy. Everyone ordered something different, but the best part was the generous portions, which allowed us to enjoy leftovers the next day too! Muito Obrigado, amiga! Snooker tables in the basement for anyone who likes a game after a great meal! 😊

I’ve been here a couple of times, and each time is always excellent. Food is tasty, individual portions are considerable, beverages are Portuguese (so good ones 🙃), atmosphere is traditional but friendly and respectful.

Great place to eat. I was surprised that I never visited this place before. The food is delicious, proper 🇵🇹 style. And the plates are well served. Eat and take home too. Tgis will be my 🇵🇹 restaurant to go from now on, as is best value for money. Excellent food, fairly priced, and nice staff.

I would like to start my review by saying that the food in this place is good. Unfortunately, with a pre-booked table, they took over 1 hour and 30 minutes from the time we ordered to the time we were served... During the wait, we saw plenty of other tables being served while they arrived significantly later than us, we asked and the reply was 'we want to serve all your food at the same time'. They forgot my order while serving our table, which made me wait further 15-20 minutes while the rest of my colleagues ate their food - miscommunication with the chef. The staff was apologetic and the bill was 'somewhat' reduced due to the inconvenient (the discount was barely noticeable given the lack of service problem). At times, good food can justify service unprofessionality... not in Grelha D'Ouro I am afraid. I am sorry to admit I had my hopes high, this was a big disappointment and I urge large groups (5+) to avoid this restaurant - it could ruin your experience.

The food was amazing Service fantastic Traditional Portuguese cuisine is worth going there with family and friends. The waitress remembers me from 7 years ago when I visited her in another restaurant. The lady with lovely smile and with light eye colours.

I want to start this by saying I had selected the restaurant based on great reviews and a local telling me this was one of the best Portuguese restaurants in the area - high praise indeed. Unfortunately my experience did not live up to this. I was celebrating my birthday with friends, and turned up on time, only to be told our table was not ready. We were informed it would be no more than 15 minutes, and we might prefer to wait downstairs. We had to go upstairs to order drinks, and another patron (rather than the staff) helped bring these down. We were sat downstairs unattended for a further 45 minutes. We could have ordered extra drinks or small plates, but were not given the option. When we returned upstairs, patrons were still sat at the tables reserved for us watching videos on their phones. We asked when our table was going to be made available, only to be told they could not move other patrons on. The member of staff was incredibly dismissive of us and did not offer one word of apology - my partner felt her tone was as if we had inconvenienced them, not the other way around. If you could not seat our party or there were going to be further delays, then let us know so we can make a decision on whether to stay. I am loathe to give venues one star ratings as businesses can have an offer day. However in this instance it was utterly deserved. You should not treat patrons in this way.

Really nice casual Portuguese restaurant. Relaxed and laid back, and very friendly service. Had the gizzard as an appetiser, flavourful but a bit overcooked, so it was on the tougher side. The bacalao with smashed potatoes was nicely done, but most of the potatoes didn't really get much colour. The sardines were nicely grilled. Would recommend it for a relaxed dinner. Avoid the house red though.
