I had to get from San Francisco to Sacramento on a crunched timeline and this was the only way to get there without being super late.
I booked my ticket online (which was a breeze) and showed up to the station without any hiccups. When I arrived, it was pretty chaotic with people standing everywhere and lines situated by letter, but no destinations listed.
When I couldn't figure it out, I stood in line at the check-in desk, waited my turn and asked which was the right queue for my destination and this is how the conversation went:
Me: "Which line is going to Sacramento?"
Lady: "If you were listening, you would have heard me say it."
Me: "Um. I just got here... so, I just need to know which line to get in."
Lady: "Like I said, I just said it over the loudspeaker.
Me: "Like I said, I just got here, so I didn't hear your first announcement."
Lady: "Again, if you were listening you would have known. (Points to a growing line and proceeds to help the next person.)
While I'm waiting, the people to my left start piling into their bus. A few minutes later, about five pile in behind me, frustrated, and said that Ms. Friendly had directed them into the wrong section. Who know that random pointing wasn't an explicit instruction.
Our driver wasn't any better. We actually saw her leave someone at a stop along the way. Seats aren't ideal and if the person wants to lean back in front of you, be prepared to have a seat lodged in between your legs for two hours.
Yeah, it was only $15.50 with tax and fees, there was wifi and outlets, but if you can find a time that fits your schedule, 100% take Amtrak instead. At least they're friendlier and a little more organized. But if you like surly people that could care less if you make it out, then you'll love it here.
