The Best Spicy Dishes In Philadelphia - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Griddle & Rice is a smallWest Passyunkcafe that’s quietly making some of the best Indonesian food in Philly. They’re also serving up a pungent, plate-sized ayam geprek—a smashed chicken dish with a chili-packed sambal relish that we can’t stop eating. It’s a brand of pleasure from a peppery, umami-induced pain that’s perplexing, even to us. We’ve boiled it down to the incomparably juicy chicken with an irresistibly crunchy exterior, plus a mound of steamed rice, a fried egg, and fresh veggies that provide a cool presence to counter the lava topping the whole dish. Order a java tea with lychee and basil chia seeds, and you’ll have double the reprieve." - Candis R. McLean

The Hit List: New Philadelphia Restaurants To Try Right Now - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"As Philly’s only part-Indonesian, part-American restaurant, Griddle & Rice doesn’t need much else to stand out. But the Point Breeze counter-service spot also has an excellent menu  that mixes sambal-infused flavors of Indonesian cuisine with the spirit of a traditional American breakfast. Balance the fragrant heat of the nasi uduk with the berry and whipped cream-topped pancakes, or pair the smashed fried chicken smothered in chili-loaded sambal bawang with an egg and cheese sammy. The Indonesian influence extends to the drink menu, where lychee, basil chia seeds, and milo abound, but cookie butter lattes are also available if that’s more your speed. There are only 12 seats in the cheery dining room, but you can–and should–do as the entire neighborhood does and order ahead for pickup." - candis mclean, alison kessler, candis mclean, candis mclean, alison kessler, candis mclean, candis mclean, candis mclean, alison kessler, candis mclean, alison kessler, candis mclean, alison kessler

Best New Restaurants in Philly Right Now | Eater Philly

"Indonesian breakfast and lunch meet coffee culture in this corner cafe in deep South Philly. Hungry neighbors are already flocking for the breakfast sandwiches, chicken congee, Indonesian smashed and fried chicken, and more. The coffee drinks range from classic to inventive, with plenty of Southeast Asian influence thrown in. There are also sweet breakfast items like pancakes and French toast." - Maddy Sweitzer-Lamme

Google
South Philly just got a gem with Griddle and Rice, a brand new Indonesian-American fusion spot that completely blew me away. The food was nothing short of a 10/10. The standout for me was the Smashed Chicken Rice—packed with bold, fiery spice that some might find intense, but for us, it was absolutely perfect. The heat paired with the depth of flavor left me instantly craving more. The Supreme Sammie was another surprise hit, unexpectedly juicy and full of flavor, easily one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in a while. On top of that, their baked goods are made fresh in-house daily, and you can really taste the difference. Don’t miss their matcha and drink selection, which was refreshing and rounded out the meal beautifully. Service was just as impressive as the food which was warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly. Griddle and Rice is a place I’ll definitely be coming back to again and again

Google
This place may only have limited seating for dine-in, but the food and drinks are on another level!! definitely worth trying! I first came here just to try their matcha, and I ended up falling in love with both the food and their other drinks as well. The service is also very friendly, which makes the whole experience even better. This spot has definitely become my new obsession

Might be the best south asian fare in Philadelphia. We had the breakfast chicken platter and smashed chicken rice bowl. My preference is the breakfast platter but both were delicious. The sambal is INCREDIBLY spicy. I have a good spice tolerance and I was struggling, so I’d suggest getting it on the side to try it out first. We also got the Dirty Milo and Strawberry Matcha. 10/10 no notes. We did takeout this time. There’s a few tables and some window seating, but it’s a pretty small spot. Overall, really happy with another delicious halal option in Philadelphia. Love seeing the Indonesian community make their mark in the food scene.

Google
I usually come for some matcha before I go to work, but luckily today I had time to come in and eat with my friends. The food is really good, the Indonesian food is some of the best I’ve had lately and is very authentic! It even has ayam geprek which I haven’t seen many places sell!!! The place is very small but it is nicely decorated. Great place to eat or just grab a drink!

Google
I grew up in Indonesia so it’s always a treat to have more Indonesian restaurants nearby. Heard so many great reviews so decided to try. We ordered strawberry matcha and iced coffee. Both were great. Matcha was just a tad of sweet, which was perfect for me. My husband got the OG platter and pancake. He enjoyed his meal and thought that the pancake was really fluffy! As for me, I got their chicken porridge, which is one of my comfort food. It was good, however, the texture was too mushy for my liking. I like my porridge to have a little more texture. I also got almost all of their Indonesian food to-go (nasi uduk, bakmi ayam, ayam geprek, sate kambing, bakso sapi). Just missing sate kambing and lontong sayur. Their Indonesian food was really tasty! I recommend trying all of them just because they’re so different. If you are new to Indonesian food, I recommend nasi uduk (breakfast rice platter), bakso sapi (meatball soup), and bakmi ayam (chicken noodle) to start. Nasi uduk is also a great option for lunch and dinner!

Google
Incredible breakfast at Griddle & Rice!!! The breakfast rice platter was a ton of food and everything it included was delicious - my favorite was the veggie fritter and my friend loved the tofu but truly you can’t go wrong. Their drinks are fun and refreshing. We will definitely be returning!!!

Google
Griddle & Rice is a gem in Philly, serving up inventive flavors with care and consistency. The strawberry matcha was a refreshing surprise—earthy matcha layered with real strawberry purée, balanced and not overly sweet, with each sip offering a clean, smooth finish. The ayam geprek stole the show: perfectly crispy smashed fried chicken topped with sambal that packed serious heat, even for someone like me with a high spice tolerance. To end on a sweet note, the roti bakar Nutella Milo toast was indulgent and deeply satisfying, with warm, buttery toast, gooey Nutella, and the nostalgic maltiness of Milo, all tied together with a drizzle of condensed milk. Service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, and each dish felt fresh and thoughtfully made. Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for bold, distinctive flavors done right.

Google
New Brunch place with Indonesian flare. You wont be disappointed with their food, drinks and service. The Mixed rice/ nasi uduk (breakfast) are very filling. Their coffee drinks is a must try. Cant wait to try the rest of the menu, especially their home made noddle.

Yelp
Griddle and Rice is so cute inside and the staff is incredibly sweet. As people walked in, the staff acknowledged them and handed them a menu. When I was confused as to what to order, the staff was very patient and informative. They have a sink in the seating area to wash your hands which is such a nice touch - every restaurant should have one. The drink menu has something for everyone. They have several pastries as well. I found the prices to be very reasonable. We paid $40 for two entrees and two drinks. Iced Coffee (5/5) - I prefer an iced coffee over a cold brew so this was nice to see Es Kopi Gula Aren (4/5) - this was an iced coffee with gula aren (indonesian palm sugar); it was hard to mix the gula aren with the iced coffee since the drink was cold, would recommend though for the experience! Nasi Uduk (4/5) - this was the breakfast rice platter which came with indonesian coconut rice with fried chicken, shredded egg, fried rice noodle, sweet soy tempe, bakwan sayur, sambal and crispy crackers. I loved the variety of this platter, it felt a little oily as everything was fried but every single item was fantastic. Empal Geprek (5/5) - this was a special, it was like a dried beef with rice! Definitely want to come back to grab a breakfast sandwich and matcha! Also - halal alert! Woot woot!

Yelp
The food was fantastic! They're still getting used to pacing as the new-place-hype is still going strong, but staff are excellent and food is made deliciously. The interior art feels fun and reminds me of when a college kid starts ordering art on Etsy to fill a makeshift space. Coffee drinks that we got were very watery and disappointing. I plan on trying them again to see if they improve!

Yelp
3.5, room for improvement. For to go order at least. Assuming that if you eat in it would be better. The restaurant is small but cute, feels like it was decorated to be "Instagrammable". Had minimal interaction with staffs but what I did encountered there was nothing negative. Food was ready fairly fast for pick up. For food selection, I did only try their Indonesian food selections. My favorite was the ayam gaprek; it was moist and flavorful and considering it was to go the outer batter retained its crunchiness. The rest I would probably pass the next time. Sate kambing (lamb) was flavorful but tough and the peanut sauce was thickkk, like peanut butter spread. Lontong sayur was ok. Nasi uduk was flavorful, the fritter was also flavorful but the chicken was so dry and tough that I ended up giving most of it to my pup. Roti bakar was also dry. It feels like not enough filling and condensed milk. I ended up adding more cheese when I got home. There's another local Indonesian restaurant that I feel does roti bakar better. The drinks were probably my favorite of all the things I ordered. Matcha float was delicious! The taste of the matcha was so good and the scoops of the matcha ice cream really made the matcha so creamy and delicious. Kopi aran was really good as well. The tiramisu latte was also pretty good. I tasted mostly milk, foam and chocolate syrup (I think). Probably a good option for those that love sweet coffee drinks without tasting too much coffee. Will be back for the matcha and probably to try the breakfast options. Food wise, I'm not against it but probably need to try eating in.

Yelp
A new Indonesian breakfast/brunch spot just opened in South Philly, and of course, we had to check it out! My boyfriend grew up in Indonesia and loves trying all the Indo restaurants around town. We thought Sky Cafe was the best... but Griddle and Rice just changed our minds, they win! I ordered the strawberry matcha latte (no sugar), and honestly, it's the best I've had outside of Starbucks. Smooth, earthy, and perfectly balanced. We had to try their most popular dish: the Nasi Uduk (breakfast rice platter). The fried chicken was crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside, and full of flavor. It paired so well with the fragrant coconut rice and spicy sambal. We also ordered the chicken satay, and wow that peanut sauce was something else. So rich and tasty, and it came with rice cakes too. Service was quick and efficient, which we really appreciated, especially for a busy little spot. The space is small, definitely more of a takeout or quick dine-in spot. There are a few tables, but seating is pretty tight. That said, the menu is surprisingly extensive for such a small place. They even have pastries! Highly recommend if you haven't been yet. We'll definitely be back to try more dishes and drinks!

Yelp
I enjoyed my time at this quaint establishment. They serve a mixture of American breakfast and Indonesian food. Their drinks are reasonably priced, and the owner is so humble. I had their nasi ayam grepek and nasi uduk. Both came out fresh, and you can smell the coconut from the nasi uduk. i just wished the chicken was a bit more seasoned. I will be back for more of their food!

Yelp
This newly opened breakfast and Indonesian food at the corner of 22nd and Jackson has been busy in their first days. Strawberry matcha is a hot item. It's sold out early every day. I came around four and some items are already sold out. Ayam geprek aka smashed chicken is highly recommended. Chicken is tender, juicy, and flavorful with sambal on the side for those who likes spicy food. The restaurant isn't big with some seatings.

Yelp
Went here for lunch recently. The place is cute inside with plenty of seating, love the branding. The staff were super friendly and helpful when ordering. I had the smashed chicken platter that came with rice, an egg and veggies, with your choice of sauce. I landed on the sambal matah sauce that wasn't exactly a sauce. It had chili's and garlic and was definitely spicy, more spicy then I anticipated. The chicken was crunchy and delicious. Only thing I wish I had was more of a dipping sauce for the chicken. There was some sauce options at the counter I should have tried but didn't. Overall I enjoyed my experience and would definitely return.

Yelp
This was a fantastic meal. As someone who enjoys hearty full meals for breakfast, this restaurant had the perfect combination of spicy, sweet, and satisfying foods. Will 100% be back!

Yelp
Fantastic and friendly tiny corner spot. The chicken congee will make you weep! Everything I've tried I've loved and I love what a cute and comfy little cafe they've created. It's just what the neighborhood was needing. I'll be going again and again.

Yelp
Can't wait to visit, sounds delicious. The brunch items look great, and the pancakes are a definite order.

Yelp
Food was delicious, the restaurant is adorable, and the people were lovely and welcoming! We ordered the fluffy Sammy, breakfast platter, and some drinks (the strawberry matcha was so good). The chefs gave us some insight into the cooking process for some of the ingredients and it made us appreciate the experience even more. We're just visiting Philly, but we hope we can go again!
