The Best Spicy Dishes In Philadelphia - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Griddle & Rice is a smallWest Passyunkcafe that’s quietly making some of the best Indonesian food in Philly. They’re also serving up a pungent, plate-sized ayam geprek—a smashed chicken dish with a chili-packed sambal relish that we can’t stop eating. It’s a brand of pleasure from a peppery, umami-induced pain that’s perplexing, even to us. We’ve boiled it down to the incomparably juicy chicken with an irresistibly crunchy exterior, plus a mound of steamed rice, a fried egg, and fresh veggies that provide a cool presence to counter the lava topping the whole dish. Order a java tea with lychee and basil chia seeds, and you’ll have double the reprieve." - Candis R. McLean

The Hit List: New Philadelphia Restaurants To Try Right Now - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"As Philly’s only part-Indonesian, part-American restaurant, Griddle & Rice doesn’t need much else to stand out. But the Point Breeze counter-service spot also has an excellent menu  that mixes sambal-infused flavors of Indonesian cuisine with the spirit of a traditional American breakfast. Balance the fragrant heat of the nasi uduk with the berry and whipped cream-topped pancakes, or pair the smashed fried chicken smothered in chili-loaded sambal bawang with an egg and cheese sammy. The Indonesian influence extends to the drink menu, where lychee, basil chia seeds, and milo abound, but cookie butter lattes are also available if that’s more your speed. There are only 12 seats in the cheery dining room, but you can–and should–do as the entire neighborhood does and order ahead for pickup." - candis mclean, alison kessler, candis mclean, candis mclean, alison kessler, candis mclean, candis mclean, candis mclean, alison kessler, candis mclean, alison kessler, candis mclean, alison kessler

Best New Restaurants in Philly Right Now | Eater Philly

"Indonesian breakfast and lunch meet coffee culture in this corner cafe in deep South Philly. Hungry neighbors are already flocking for the breakfast sandwiches, chicken congee, Indonesian smashed and fried chicken, and more. The coffee drinks range from classic to inventive, with plenty of Southeast Asian influence thrown in. There are also sweet breakfast items like pancakes and French toast." - Maddy Sweitzer-Lamme

firstly, congratulations on opening your business. i hope with every customer experience or review, it could help improve the way it’s ran one way or another. so, about our experience there. customer service was good and ordering process was easy. but the most annoying part is picking up the food & drinks. my partner has to get up and go to the counter 5 times to pick up the food. FIVE TIMES 😭 first for the fritters, then the drinks, then the sate then the iga then the geprek. it took about 20-25mins for the whole order to be received. and as you know, with that system being in place food will be enjoyed in parts not as a whole. as it will get cold quick. this could be avoided if a buzzer system is in place, or a warmer in the front, or just have all the things ready at once before calling out the customer to pick it up. food wise, the bakwan was crispy but was kinda bland and pretty greasy. the iga has nice fatty parts but it does not fall off the bone. the ayam geprek is dry and stringy. the skin just wont tear, you have to rip it apart. (ended up using our hands to ease eating it) no crunch whatsoever too. the sate is tough. i just ended up swallowing it despite chewing for a while because it simply wont break down. but i think flavour wise for everything, it could be improved, it needs more seasoning for sure. i feel like only the sambal is flavourful and hit the right notes. i have to give mad props to the drinks though, it was literally SO amazing. it was the perfect amount of sweetness and flavour. it was executed so well. the interior of the place is quite aesthetic. love that too. while i understand that the business is still new, i hope you take this as constructive criticism as a room for improvement so others will have a better experience dining at your place. all the best!

Google
It’s an unassuming spot in south Philly. You’re walking and out of nowhere, there it is. My friend and I went at noon on a Sunday, it was packed but honestly moved quickly. You order at the counter and then squeeze in the minimal seating. Even though at first I was thinking it was going to be a long process the line moved fast and people rotated out of their seats timely so my friend and I were able to get seats together with ease. We split the chicken congee and the breakfast sandwich and some vegetable fritters. Everything. Was soooo good. Could be considered one of the best breakfast sandwiches in the city. The beef bacon is really what it’s about. And the chicken congee was amazing, so much going on, lots of flavors and so comforting. Overall 10/10 will be going back.

Google
My fiance and I came here for lunch and based off the social media hype and high rating, we were excited to try this place as we've had indo food at other places before and enjoyed it. Unfortunately, we did not have a good meal here. We ordered the breakfast platter and smashed chicken platter. The chicken on the breakfast platter was very tough and dry. The other items were better but flavors overall were very one note. The smashed chicken was a little bit better but the sauce I ordered was overly greasy and missing an extra element besides the spice. We both lost our appetite halfway through the meal. My fiance vomited afterwards and I had stomach pains. Not sure what the issue was, we think it was the smashed chicken. Maybe it was a bad day but it was busy and people seemed like they enjoyed their food.

Google
Very family forward little cafe stop, the food platters are phenomenal, but I’ll have to try them all in due time. Everything sounds delightful and delicious. Their signature coffee is amazing, so glad I tried it! The Indonesian food stays true to their cuisine which is lovely, really great flavors, people and atmosphere here! Will come here more!

Google
South Philly just got a gem with Griddle and Rice, a brand new Indonesian-American fusion spot that completely blew me away. The food was nothing short of a 10/10. The standout for me was the Smashed Chicken Rice—packed with bold, fiery spice that some might find intense, but for us, it was absolutely perfect. The heat paired with the depth of flavor left me instantly craving more. The Supreme Sammie was another surprise hit, unexpectedly juicy and full of flavor, easily one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in a while. On top of that, their baked goods are made fresh in-house daily, and you can really taste the difference. Don’t miss their matcha and drink selection, which was refreshing and rounded out the meal beautifully. Service was just as impressive as the food which was warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly. Griddle and Rice is a place I’ll definitely be coming back to again and again

Google
This place may only have limited seating for dine-in, but the food and drinks are on another level!! definitely worth trying! I first came here just to try their matcha, and I ended up falling in love with both the food and their other drinks as well. The service is also very friendly, which makes the whole experience even better. This spot has definitely become my new obsession

Google
This is a very tiny restaurant. Maybe less than 20 seats indoor. The problem is people started to hold seats when they didn’t have the food yet and the people with food already don’t have seats. If people placed the order and grab the seats after the food is ready, maybe (maybe) it’ll reduce the seating problem. The service from the staffs is great. I’ve ordered the smashed chicken (delish) and the dry chicken noodle (not too great) and also beef skewers (the sauce was good but the beef balls don’t have much beef flavor). I’ll try it again when it’s less crowded.

Google
the food here is DELICIOUS! as an indonesian, i found this food to be very authentic and similar to the flavors i’d get in jakarta or from my mom 🤫 i was just visiting philly from texas but i’m so glad i was able to stop by and try this spot out because i’m so happy to have found a successful indonesian business making amazing food! the prices are also very affordable with the portion given. i split everything ordered with my mom and we were both stuffed! next time i come to philly i’m definitely coming again and going to also try some of their non-indo menu items

Yelp
Small location, quick service, ample portions, appropriate prices. I really enjoyed my meal here. My husband and I often struggle to find a single restaurant that hits both of our palates. We are so happy with our choice to check this place out. I got the nasi uduk (breakfast rice platter) and the beef meatball skewers. The nasi uduk was delicious. I loved that there was so much to explore on the plate. The fried chicken was crispy without being over done, the sweet chili egg was flavorful, the veggie fritter was so crunchy, sweet soy tempeh was something I've never had before but I now crave, the coconut rice was fragrant without being overpowering, and I used the crispy garlic crackers to make a scoop and combine the chicken, rice, and sambal to make the most delectable bite. My husband got the creme brûlée French toast and it was so delicious. It was rich without being overly sweet and the layers of custard really brought home the creme brûlée flavor. The beef meatball skewers were ok; not sure I'd get them again, the texture was not good for me but the peanut sauce was so delicious. For drinks, I had the matchamisu. It had the richness of tiramisu but was not drowned in sugar or syrup. Overall good but not sure I'd get it again. My partner had the cookie butter latte. That was delicious without overdoing it on the sugar. All in all, really positive experience and I left ready to plan my next trip back so that I can try more on the menu!! As an fyi, they do not take reservations and seating is limited to 4 two tops, 2 four tops and windowsill/counter seating (maybe 8 stools in total) if you come early, you will probably miss the rush. We came around 10 am on a Saturday and there was no line with ample seating. The service is quick, you order at the counter and pickup the food when it's ready. You can order take out/to-go. Staff was friendly. A cute, fast casual eatery - I wish they were in my neighborhood!

Yelp
We went for late brunch today after seeing this place pop up a few times on my feed. We got the smashed chicken with garlic sauce, chicken congee and two matchamisu lattes. Everything was incredibly delicious and flavorful! Limited seating but we got lucky and found a table immediately after we placed our order. Staff was friendly and helpful with suggesting what to order. One thing I noticed is the floor was very dirty and because of my obsessive nature, I was very uncomfortable and constantly checking whether the hem of my jeans or my coat, which was hanging on the chair, wasn't touching the floor. That could be a "me" problem though. I imagine it would be better if the floor was cleaned between seatings but also I understand it would be difficult to do so if they constantly get traffic. I would definitely recommend it though because the food was bomb!

Yelp
I came here with my 2 kids and wife a few months ago. Walking in, you're instantly hit with delicious savory smells fresh from the kitchen. The staff is super friendly and ready to talk your order and there are a lot of options, including a display of pastries that my kid was instantly drawn to. I got an omelette, my wife got a sandwich, and the kids shared some pancakes. The food here is really very good and comes out hot since you're basically grabbing the plate right from the kitchen. My big kid decided that my omelette looked tasty and basically ate 3/4 of it. RUDE! We left with 2 pastries that I can't remember other than my wife and kids ate them up fast. The only downside to this place is there's no bathroom, which isn't ideal when you have kids in tow. Still worth the trip though!

Yelp
If only this place was closer to me! I visited on a weekday for lunch after having this place on my list for quite awhile. Walking in, I was hit by a cozy and bustling cafe vibe which was definitely in stark contrast to the chilly quiet outside neighborhood corner. At the counter, I ordered the ayam geprek or smashed chicken rice dish with sambal on the side. For a drink, I got the kopi gula aren. It was quite crowded inside but I was able to find a seat for myself immediately. I felt like by the time I had taken off my coat and gotten settled, my drink was ready, and then my food was quickly ready after that. I've never had smashed fried chicken before, but it was just what I needed. It's what you would think it would be like, and the sambal really gives the dish a nice finish. It was definitely a good portion size. The iced coffee was nice too and not too sweet. I'd definitely come back to try more of their menu!

Yelp
I feel like we need this type of place in every neighbourhood! This place does great breakfast sandwiches, and also Indonesian dishes. I went here with my daughter and ordered Supreme Sammy, Chicken Congee, kopi tubruk, and unsweetened ice black tea. They do not skimp with portion, the supreme Sammy was packed and I was genuinely full 3/4 of the way. Chicken congee was also very good and it is an ultimate comfort food. Unsweetened ice black tea was very nice, and kopi tubruk was strong, but very smooth (it is unfiltered so when you get this you have to let it sit for about 10 min for the coffee ground to sink to the bottom). It is a very small space, we were lucky we got the window counter seats, but there were enough people coming and going for pick ups so it gets kind of crowded.

Yelp
Cute little restaurant. Very small restaurant, limited seating. Need to order at cash register. Very nice employees. Service was good. I had the chicken with hard boiled egg that was deep fried- Nasi Uduk. The chicken thigh meal was very spicy. I also ordered the berry fruit smoothie.

Yelp
We LOVE Griddle and Rice! My coworkers and I come here often, and we're obsessed with everything on the menu. I recently got the dry noodles with chicken; I was hesitant, but the noodles had so much flavor that it's easily my new favorite dish. Their drink menu is also amazing. I can't recommend the Tiramisu Matcha enough. Unfortunately, seating is very limited, so you might have trouble finding a table if you have a large party. I'd recommend you go during off-hours if you have more than two people. The staff is always friendly and helpful!
google avatar

Patricia O.

Yelp
The moment you step in, you are inundated with the amazing smells of the fried rice and amazing custom drinks! I got the beef ribs and they were to die for! I just wish the location was a bit bigger so I can dine-in instead of taking it go. I also got the milo dinosaur and it brought back childhood memories. Lastly, the staff was very friendly and provided information about the new items. I can't wait to come back!

RJ B.

Yelp
Very limited seating and they don't have a bathroom so keep that in mind. The Smashed Chicken was very good and I might go back for that. What I didn't like was that the prices for some of the items on the laminated menu, on the counter next to the cash register, are different from the prices on their POS system: I was overcharged for the Smashed Chicken ($14 vs $15) and a hot latte ($5 vs $5.50, $1 extra for oat milk so I paid $6.50); the latte, by the way, was half liquid, half foam... would not be getting that again. When I pointed out the price difference, the cashier just said 'Sorry' -- the price on the POS, which customers cannot see, is what you have to pay.

Yelp
Griddle and Rice is so cute inside and the staff is incredibly sweet. As people walked in, the staff acknowledged them and handed them a menu. When I was confused as to what to order, the staff was very patient and informative. They have a sink in the seating area to wash your hands which is such a nice touch - every restaurant should have one. The drink menu has something for everyone. They have several pastries as well. I found the prices to be very reasonable. We paid $40 for two entrees and two drinks. Iced Coffee (5/5) - I prefer an iced coffee over a cold brew so this was nice to see Es Kopi Gula Aren (4/5) - this was an iced coffee with gula aren (indonesian palm sugar); it was hard to mix the gula aren with the iced coffee since the drink was cold, would recommend though for the experience! Nasi Uduk (4/5) - this was the breakfast rice platter which came with indonesian coconut rice with fried chicken, shredded egg, fried rice noodle, sweet soy tempe, bakwan sayur, sambal and crispy crackers. I loved the variety of this platter, it felt a little oily as everything was fried but every single item was fantastic. Empal Geprek (5/5) - this was a special, it was like a dried beef with rice! Definitely want to come back to grab a breakfast sandwich and matcha! Also - halal alert! Woot woot!

Yelp
absolutely adorable cafe, a great spot for breakfast/brunch! the food and drinks here are phenomenal. my friend and i finally had a chance to check out this american-indonesian spot, and i already can't wait to come back! there's so much on the menu i want to try. i started with the hojicha latte with gula aren which was unique and refreshing. hojicha is such an underrated tea, and i'm so happy to find a place that does it well. gula aren is a traditional indonesian sweetener made from palm sugar, and it added the perfect touch of sweetness to our drinks. for food, i ordered the ayam geprek rice bowl and my friend had the breakfast rice platter. the plates were absolutely gorgeous and stacked with plenty of food, it could have easily been split into two servings. the smashed chicken was so flavorful, and the sambal bawang (chili relish) was spicier than i expected. everything was delicious! we ended dinner with matcha. i had the mango matcha while my friend had the strawberry. absolutely delicious! the drinks were a perfect level of sweetness, and the matcha was high quality. definitely one of the best matcha beverages in the city! food and drinks came out fast despite it being quite busy. my friend and i were able to get a table without issues, but the spot is rather small and there is limited seating. this would also be a good grab-and-go spot. there's limited service: you order at the cash register and then pick-up your order when called. everything we had was absolutely phenomenal, and i can't wait to be back!

Yelp
The food was fantastic! They're still getting used to pacing as the new-place-hype is still going strong, but staff are excellent and food is made deliciously. The interior art feels fun and reminds me of when a college kid starts ordering art on Etsy to fill a makeshift space. Coffee drinks that we got were very watery and disappointing. I plan on trying them again to see if they improve!

Yelp
3.5, room for improvement. For to go order at least. Assuming that if you eat in it would be better. The restaurant is small but cute, feels like it was decorated to be "Instagrammable". Had minimal interaction with staffs but what I did encountered there was nothing negative. Food was ready fairly fast for pick up. For food selection, I did only try their Indonesian food selections. My favorite was the ayam gaprek; it was moist and flavorful and considering it was to go the outer batter retained its crunchiness. The rest I would probably pass the next time. Sate kambing (lamb) was flavorful but tough and the peanut sauce was thickkk, like peanut butter spread. Lontong sayur was ok. Nasi uduk was flavorful, the fritter was also flavorful but the chicken was so dry and tough that I ended up giving most of it to my pup. Roti bakar was also dry. It feels like not enough filling and condensed milk. I ended up adding more cheese when I got home. There's another local Indonesian restaurant that I feel does roti bakar better. The drinks were probably my favorite of all the things I ordered. Matcha float was delicious! The taste of the matcha was so good and the scoops of the matcha ice cream really made the matcha so creamy and delicious. Kopi aran was really good as well. The tiramisu latte was also pretty good. I tasted mostly milk, foam and chocolate syrup (I think). Probably a good option for those that love sweet coffee drinks without tasting too much coffee. Will be back for the matcha and probably to try the breakfast options. Food wise, I'm not against it but probably need to try eating in.

Yelp
A new Indonesian breakfast/brunch spot just opened in South Philly, and of course, we had to check it out! My boyfriend grew up in Indonesia and loves trying all the Indo restaurants around town. We thought Sky Cafe was the best... but Griddle and Rice just changed our minds, they win! I ordered the strawberry matcha latte (no sugar), and honestly, it's the best I've had outside of Starbucks. Smooth, earthy, and perfectly balanced. We had to try their most popular dish: the Nasi Uduk (breakfast rice platter). The fried chicken was crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside, and full of flavor. It paired so well with the fragrant coconut rice and spicy sambal. We also ordered the chicken satay, and wow that peanut sauce was something else. So rich and tasty, and it came with rice cakes too. Service was quick and efficient, which we really appreciated, especially for a busy little spot. The space is small, definitely more of a takeout or quick dine-in spot. There are a few tables, but seating is pretty tight. That said, the menu is surprisingly extensive for such a small place. They even have pastries! Highly recommend if you haven't been yet. We'll definitely be back to try more dishes and drinks!

Yelp
I enjoyed my time at this quaint establishment. They serve a mixture of American breakfast and Indonesian food. Their drinks are reasonably priced, and the owner is so humble. I had their nasi ayam grepek and nasi uduk. Both came out fresh, and you can smell the coconut from the nasi uduk. i just wished the chicken was a bit more seasoned. I will be back for more of their food!

Yelp
This newly opened breakfast and Indonesian food at the corner of 22nd and Jackson has been busy in their first days. Strawberry matcha is a hot item. It's sold out early every day. I came around four and some items are already sold out. Ayam geprek aka smashed chicken is highly recommended. Chicken is tender, juicy, and flavorful with sambal on the side for those who likes spicy food. The restaurant isn't big with some seatings.
google avatar

Linda L.

Yelp
Came here around 11a on a Sunday and it was not too busy. There are about 4 tables in the restaurant and extra seats along the window. They have a condiment station, which was great. Everything was delicious and unique. It was great trying a little but of everything in the platter and congee
google avatar

Lauren D.

Yelp
Went here for lunch recently. The place is cute inside with plenty of seating, love the branding. The staff were super friendly and helpful when ordering. I had the smashed chicken platter that came with rice, an egg and veggies, with your choice of sauce. I landed on the sambal matah sauce that wasn't exactly a sauce. It had chili's and garlic and was definitely spicy, more spicy then I anticipated. The chicken was crunchy and delicious. Only thing I wish I had was more of a dipping sauce for the chicken. There was some sauce options at the counter I should have tried but didn't. Overall I enjoyed my experience and would definitely return.

Yelp
A cute hidden breakfast and lunch spot. The vibes are very cute with an open kitchen concept. It gets really busy so I would recommend either calling ahead to order first! The drinks were really good and strong. In terms of the food, it was flavorful and fulfilling. I would highly recommend Griddle and Rice!

Yelp
This was a fantastic meal. As someone who enjoys hearty full meals for breakfast, this restaurant had the perfect combination of spicy, sweet, and satisfying foods. Will 100% be back!

Yelp
New Indonesian noodle king in Philadelphia. Got to try their homemade noodle. The nasi uduk or coconut rice is amazing. Strong flavor, but not oilly at all. They definitely did it right. Service is ok, nothing special. Place is too small to have a little bigger group. To go might be better.

Yelp
amazing foods! always a fan of indonesian food, the chicken satay's sauce are amazing! the service was quick and we ate outdoor

Yelp
Fantastic and friendly tiny corner spot. The chicken congee will make you weep! Everything I've tried I've loved and I love what a cute and comfy little cafe they've created. It's just what the neighborhood was needing. I'll be going again and again.

Yelp
It was such a great place! The food and drinks were good: I tried the porridge, matcha, and iced tea. The service was great as well thank you so much :) and the vibes are cute in there.

Elsa S.

Yelp
Food was delicious, the restaurant is adorable, and the people were lovely and welcoming! We ordered the fluffy Sammy, breakfast platter, and some drinks (the strawberry matcha was so good). The chefs gave us some insight into the cooking process for some of the ingredients and it made us appreciate the experience even more. We're just visiting Philly, but we hope we can go again!

Marie L.

Yelp
Can't wait to visit, sounds delicious. The brunch items look great, and the pancakes are a definite order.
