12 Best Mushroom Dishes in NYC - Eater NY

"Among many flashy ways chefs use mushrooms, there are more humble deployment worth noting, including this mushroom barley soup. Yes, Jewish, Russian, or Polish delis all make a similar soup, which uses creamy barley as both thickener and a perfect foil for the subtle woodsiness of the ’shrooms. Carrots are added as a sweet note at this new pastrami purveyor on the Upper East Side." - Robert Sietsema

Excellent, flavorful, very fresh and delicious food. Generous portions. Reviews are accurate! You can pick 7 salads to go with your protein (a delicious grilled burger, grilled chicken, shawarma). Very casual, order at the counter and sit outside.

Google
They have the best Kosher options. Love the Chicken or Lamb shawarma! The tahini sauce is decadent! Very nice food, and the customer service is precise! Don't forget to tip the cooks!

Google
I have never had such a delicious shawarma before... Grill Point on Lexington has an amazing Mediterranean Israeli food. I truly felt like being teleported to “Shook Hatikvvah” The food here is amazing. Every Pita is loaded, generous portions, great ingredients, fresh, delicious. Couldn’t have enough of it. Totally and whole heartedly recommend 💖🥇💖

Google
It was a totally fluke we ended up here. We had just finished 6 hours at the Met and on our way to a random food joint that we saw on Google maps and that looked easy. My 9 year old was really struggling and we came to this corner and decided to take a peak. Food looked good so thought we give it a try and hope our daughter would stop complaining. Turned out to be one of those awesome random travel experiences. The staff kind of sucks in the fact they could see we didn’t really know what we were doing and didn’t offer any help, but one we figured out we were in an Israel/ kosher place we started catching on. The food was all great. My wife and I shared the lamb and turkey bowl and we were stuffed. I wish my picture did it justice as there was so much meat on top you couldn’t see the boat load of salad underneath. The kids meal was huge and the questionable choice of my daughter to get a beef patty was a surprise hit. Couldn’t believe how flavourful it was. They also had a cool assortment of drinks from Israel.

Google
Incredible falafel and fluffy pita!! Tastes like Israel. A little pricey, but it’s kosher food in NY. Fries are mediocre at best, pretty soggy or over fried, all in one batch

Elliot Porter

Google
Their lamb shawarma bowl is my favorite in NY. A generous serving with lots of choices of Israeli toppings. Incidentally, they have really delicious schug (jalapeno spicy sauce). The laffa and pita are soft and fresh. Although they have a few cafe tables and chairs, it's not really a dine in experience. Really a great stop if you're in the area.

Google
I Had the Lamb Shawarma Laffa and I loved it ! They were fast, it was a bit busy at lunch but you can choose whatever toppings you like, the Cashier lady was so nice and answered my questions ! I really loved it and would totally come back

Google
Food was good. The shawarma here is really good and veggies tasted fresh, overall it’s a good shawarma laffa. Definitely get the mixed chicken meat shawarma. The staff was nice for the most part except for the people behind the counter making sandwiches. They’re rude and do not how to deal with customers. Also, they don’t give side salads which I found wack, however they accommodated us and gave pickles on the side. A little pricey but portions are good.

Yelp
Hot off the grill shawarma with 5 toppings all rolled into a large bread or pita. The food is fresh, well seasoned, and portions are huge! The Ladd sandwich with French fries could definitely be shared. There is a little hut ( enclosed"outdoor seating") on the sidewalk if you're eating there.

Yelp
Simply outstanding. Delicious chicken shawarma, layered on top of a bowl of fresh, vibrant salads and spreads. Fresh laffa and pita. Portions large enough for two. Friendly and helpful manager and staff. Just delectable!

Yelp
I've ordered a few times through Uber and so far haven't been disappointed. Yes, it's pricey. However, the generous portion you're given and quality ingredients your meal is prepared with justify it. Choose your protein and make it a bowl or wrap with several toppings/sides to add into! Their shawarma is flavorful and not drenched in oils. Their laffa and pita is fresh and simply the best! I've tried their Yemenite soup which was good as well, but would recommend if delivery is nearby or you're dining in to ensure it's the right temperature.

Yelp
Had a bowl with schnitzel and some really delicious sides - like hummus, grilled vegetables, israeli salad. I was pretty impressed. only thing i didn't live was the laffa, which seemed kind of bland. I'd go back if i was in the mood for shawarma. probably wouldn't get the schnitzel again.

Yelp
SOOOOOOOOOO GOOD. Best shwarma laffa ever. Rivals what you would get in Israel. And the guys behind the counter are so friendly. Get whatever you want (or will fit) in your laffa/bowl/pita. Love how they don't nickel and dime you for each topping, spread, or sauce. This is place is my new favorite shwarma spot in NYC. Good for kosher keepers and non-Jews alike. Just a great overall spot.

Yelp
The place's name is confusing but this is spicy Kosher food, well served. A good sized bowl.

Yelp
Delicious! So much fun to eat at and the staff members are the sweetest! The chicken was crispy and the pita was warm and fully! Highly recommend if you're in the area!

Yelp
Grill Point is so delicious! I am sad I have not come here sooner, but happy to have found my new go to lunch/dinner place. Don't sleep on Grill Point- they're my new FAVORITE middle eastern restaurant in Manhattan! You choose your protein (lots of options for vegetarians and meat lovers!) then choose if you want a sandwich (pita or laffa) or as a bowl. Bowls can have a base of salad, rice, cous cous etc., The green falafels smelled amazing so I chose the falafel bowl. My friend had the young chicken shawarma , she said she doesnt even like shawarma but loved theirs after trying it off of her husband's plate. While your protein cooks, you choose your salads, The vegetables are also SO fresh and very well seasoned. There is no limit on how many you choose and no extra charge- so try them all! My favorites: fried eggplant, cabbage, beets and the Israeli salad! Bowls come with a fresh warm bread- choose between homemade laffa bread or pita. The falafels are very good, with a perfect garlicy flavor. It was a huge portion and I will definitely be back for more. They have a cooler with drinks to choose from, water, soda, juice and tea. I appreciated that they had peach snapple both diet and regular. While there are only two counter tops for bar seating inside, they also have an outdoor cabin and additional tables out front for outdoor dining. I will be back to try the chicken and laffa! I will say I had enough leftovers for lunch tomorrow and the flavors taste just as delicious cold as they so warm and fresh! Every bite was better than the next, my actual question is where are they sourcing their produce? Seriously the freshest sweetest tomatoes and onions I've had in a loong time. Really kind customer service, the owner Albert came by to check to see how everything was! When he thought I hadn't been given bread, he rushed to grab me some so quickly I barely had time to tell him that I has wolfed it down warm! Will be a struggle not to come back tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday - can already tell this falafel bowl is about to become an addiction.

Yelp
Food is tasty. All items were fresh and had good flavor. Presentation was A1. The workers were nice enough and the place was clean. It's a bit pricey but sometimes quality costs, right?

Yelp
So funny story... I was on my way to college and a random man on the street gave me a menu for this place. A new Middle Eastern and Kosher restaurant close to my college? Was intrigued and had to check it out. So glad that I did. Overall, I was impressed! The restaurant is set up like this. You order your food at the counter and hand them your ticket afterwards. (Though, I was not aware of this until after I waited a while for my order. Service could be improved). Then you can request as many toppings as you'd like in your meal. There's some seating inside, but there's nicely decorated outdoor seating as well. They also have a kids menu. Something for everyone! Feeling hungry for lunch, I ordered myself a Chicken Shawarma with laffa bread and requested hummus, tahini, diced tomatoes, and cucumbers to be added inside. The shawarma was so delicious!! Hands down, one of the best I've ever had in NYC. The meat was flavorful, cooked perfectly, and all of the ingredients went so well together. Everything was served warm and tasted freshly made. Now I'm craving some more laffa bread! The price was a bit high, though the huge portion made up for it. I also ordered an Israeli salad on the side, which complemented the food well. Awesome addition to the Upper East Side and I can't wait to come back and try more items on their menu. Thank you to the random man who gave me this menu :D

Yelp
Grill Point on Lexington is very new. I went in to check it out one day when I saw someone sitting in the window. It turns out she was the receptionist and she immediately got up to greet me. I told her I wanted to photograph and check out the menu and she was receptive. This place has everything modern and sanitary. There's a unisex restroom and modern check out registers. You can sit at the windows on a stool or dine in the outdoor enclosed shed on the street. I found the menu moderately priced. There's plenty of variety and they are family conscious offering a kids menu. I thought the kids menu was pricey. The food is fresh and the cooks hard at work. They're not busy in the morning during the week. While I'm not familiar with many of the food items I intend to return to experiment. Until then I'll stick with the Avocado Smash and side salad.

Yelp
Fabulous, delicious! We took home a few salads and the falafel hummus and constructed it for breakfast at home. I can only speak for the vegetarian dishes, all were made with love. I will absolutely be returning!

Yelp
Delicious food clean and great variety of add-ons to the Shawarma. Just like in Israel. Would definitely come back!!

Yelp
$18 for a pita with chicken on it. Time to leave New York. First of all some of these reviews have to be fake. Best shawarma in the USA? Not even close. Food is alright but the prices are insane and the setup is ridiculous. $18 for chicken on a pita. $26.50 for a rice bowl with some meat and toppings. Falafel is around $15-16. Before Covid I used to pay $5 for falafel downtown and $12 for shawarma in midtown. $18 is f***ing insane. After you order it's total chaos. You have to loiter around waiting for them to call your number, then you have to tell them what you want on the sandwich. Can't you just standardize the toppings then ask if we want tahini or hummus or hot peppers like every other place in New York? Overall the food is tasty and fresh, but it's lacking some middle eastern spices and salt.

Yelp
This is not the first time Grill Point didn't deliver. Their app says 3 minutes away, 2 minutes away, 1 minute away, back to 3 minutes away, etc. When it says they finally delivered; they didn't. I live in a big building on Park Avenue with a doorman. The doorman says they did not deliver. I call Grill Point and I am told ' I am sorry. There is nothing I can do. We'll give you a refund. I don't want the refund I want my dinner. I am starving. Sorry all we can do is give you a refund. As much as I like their food I cannot order from them any longer since they don't deliver & didn't even attempt to make up for it and rush a replacement order. Very bad business practice.

Yelp
Wow! This was a surprise. I ordered mixed shawarma from Uber eats and it was delicious, one of the best I've had in nyc. Will definitely have to stop by in person soon.

Yelp
REAL SHAWERMA. shaved off the spit. Flavors are good, the meat is juicy, the toppings are decent. Most people can stop reading right here. It's not cheap, but each item could probably feed 2 people if you're getting a laffa wrap. Service is stupid. The cashier gives you a ticket when you pay, then have you give the ticket to the guy preparing your food so he can figure out how you want it prepared. He's 1 foot away from cashier who gave you the ticket, and if you're a short person, you'll have to figure out how to attract their attention by reaching over the glass counter. If you got a pita, they might pile all the non meat toppings UNDER the meat so you get a soggy mess of condiments under the meat with no even distribution. Solve this by spending even more on the Laffa wrap or bowl.

Robert W.

Yelp
Food absolutely delicious. Excellent Kosher-Makes me feel like I'm in Israel. Everyone very nice & good service.

Yelp
Food is good and fresh. If u are craving some shish definitely the place to go. Beteavon!

Alexandra I.

Yelp
Great fresh authentic Israeli food. I stopped in and picked up a Pita with Hummus and all the fixings. It was delicious and fresh.

Phyllis S.

Yelp
I had the lamb & turkey schwarma- delicious. The portion in a pita was generous with added salads of choice. The schwarma in laffa ordered by my dining partners was HUGE. Both came with a ton of French fries. Service was quick & staff helpful. There's really no ambiance to this place, a couple of counter stools indoors, and a few basic tables in a street dining shed. Considering what you get, the prices are reasonable for a NYC kosher establishment.

Boaz F.

Yelp
The best falafel in NYC! Excellent service and great food I will definitely be back!

Mark D.

Yelp
I would skip this place. There are better shawarma places in the area with better flavor

Yelp
I just returned from Grill Point on Lexington Avenue and 82nd Street in Manhattan. My experience was awful. The online menu (in the store) advertised a Steak Shish Kabab platter for $21.50. The photo on the menu in the store showed a kabab platter on a plate with chumus, and a variety of salads. Then you go "next" and it gave you a choice of Pita ($0.00), other bread ($4.00) and bowl ($10.00). I chose Pita. And then I paid and waited for the cook to make the platters. The next thing I know, the cook is cutting open the top of a pita and showing it to me. I said that I didn't order a pita sandwich, I ordered a platter. To make a long story short, the cashier comes to me and tells me that the platter is an extra $10.00. And that the order which I placed has NO chumus or salads. I asked "what do I get for the extra $10.00 that I don't get in the picture?" I say that i want the item as pictured. (See the top item at https://grillpointnyc.com/lexingtonave/order which is NOT how it is described in the store. It is described in the store as coming with "a variety of salads." Nowhere does it say that the salads are $10.00 extra. Then I was told that the $10.00 is for the salads!! The owner, unwilling to make good on his advertised item and price, started insulting me. All I wanted is what he advertised. Classic "bait and switch." I have reported this store to the Department of Consumer Affairs. You would think that this being a Kosher Establishment that the owner would adhere to the highest ethics. But you would be wrong. BUYER BEWARE!

Yelp
To begin, I have spent a considerable amount of time in the Middle East, mostly Israel and I love the food of this region. So walking by Grill Point completely by chance after an Asia Society lecture, we went in, as it was full of people fairly late at night., I had no idea what to order but we decided to try hummus and baba ganoush. ( I know the reviews wax poetic about the shwarma but I had not read any reviews at that point. ) Well, you all can rave about shwarma and I am sure you are correct, but I have never had better hummus and the baba ganoush is superb, absolutely superb. Their pita is better than anything you have ever eaten in a package. I promise to try the shwarma and the rest of the menu but every time I go, I will come home with pita and hummus and baba ganoush. Now, could you please open somewhere on the UWS so I could walk to you and not have to take a bus ?? The UWS needs a place with the quality and prices of Grill Point.

Yelp
Tried grilled chicken laffa and it was unbelievably good. Fresh ingredients and great choices for toppings! Can't wait to try the rest of the menu!

John T.

Yelp
Food - Good (not great). Price - I can't believe Shwarma cost this much. Service - Horrible. Staff takes their cue from the manager. While I was waiting for my food, the manager (or owner?) takes over my seat and pushes my book on the table away. When I say that I was waiting for food, he says don't worry I'm the manager. Cashier / Mashgiach too busy to pay attention as he on his phone. Counterman half listening and messed up my order.

Ryananohel N.

Yelp
HANDS DOWN THE BEST SHAWARMA IN THE US!!! everything is fresh and tasty , the guy behind the counter is very professional and clean ! and only reason it's a 4 star review is the owner , he should not be in the front of house , he's loud and not "very polite "

Judith F.

Yelp
Food is always tasty and fresh, Shwarma and grilled chicken are my favorite, I'm happy they are in the neighborhood.

Jeffrey M.

Yelp
Not good service ! I requested something not on the menu. Wanted a plate of shwarma, no bread, no sides. They would not do it. Spoke to owner, he would not do it. He said " not on menu can't do " I walked out very unhappy and will not return again. Hope they read this review, change their policy to satisfy customer. Very bad to turn customers away. This coming from a retailer with over 30 years catering to customers wants and needs. Always found a way to make the sale and keep my customers happy !!!!

Ming C.

Yelp
Excellent Shawarma Chicken bowl! A bit pricey, about $28 including tax. However good quality of food and good amount for 2 adults.

Beth B.

Yelp
I bought Shabbat food it was so bad I trashed it and we hardly ate then I gave them another chance and ordered in and my husband got ill. Stay away
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh Kosher food, large portions, and great customer service. I ordered a big delivery from this place and was very satisfied. They even called me when an ingredient was missing, and let me choose my replacement. Very happy they are in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Topaz A.

Yelp
Very authentic and fresh shawarma. Great variety of fresh salads, meat is shaved off the spot in the spot, not like most other places where it's been sitting out in a container for a while. The salads are all original and flavorful with fresh herbs. It's so tasty and portion size is big, best shawarma I've had outside of Israel. It's also kosher

James W.

Yelp
I placed a pickup order and showed up ~5 minutes after the "pickup ready" notification. The employee behind the counter didn't want to check for my order and it looked like several other customers and delivery drivers were running into the same problem. A couple customers told the employees that they were going to cancel their orders. I could even see several bagged and completed pickup/delivery orders behind the counter but the employee barely made an effort to check the orders even when there weren't any dine-in customers. The employee at the counter was finally forced to check the names by another employee and it turned out that one of the orders was for a delivery driver who had been waiting for at least 20 minutes and had been repeatedly asking about his order. I'd been in the restaurant waiting for more than half an hour at that point so I just left and canceled the order.

Neda M.

Yelp
I am very familiar with the Grill Point in Main Street Flushing, which provides some of the best kosher Israeli food outside of Israel, and this one in NYC, did not disappoint. Ordered the baby chicken shish kabob in a pita. It was prepared and packed well, arrived on time and was thoroughly satisfying. So happy they are now in the City. Will be ordering and visiting them again.

David B.

Yelp
The person who took my order never followed through, despite promising a delivery within 15 minutes- and when I called an hour later he made up a hardly believable excuse ("printer out of paper", I am not making this up!).. My advice: stay away from this place.

Johannes F.

Yelp
Sorry, but $17.50 for a shawarma pita sandwich at a take-out is ridiculous. Pass.
