The Best Burgers in Nashville | Eater Nashville

"There’s no indoor seating at this East Nashville haunt — it’s a literal shack that’s simply doling out some of the best burgers in town. It all starts with a takeout window order of their one-third-pound Bear Creek patty on a grilled roll from Charpier’s Bakery. From there, throw in side of the thick hand-cut fries and enjoy your feast on the outdoor patio." - Ellen Fort

The 23 Best East Nashville Restaurants

"You can find plenty of fancy burger joints around town. You know, the gastropub-type places with toppings like foie gras and eggs that have been coddled with ASMR videos to ensure extra runniness. Then you have Grillshack, which has no indoor seating, just a few tables on the outside patio, and a takeout window doling out some of the best (and simplest) burgers in the city. There’s hardly anything to distract from the ⅓-pound patty sourced from Bear Creek farms and the grilled roll from Charpier’s Bakery outside of the Nations. Their fries, which are hand-cut and generously piled next to your burger, are a masterclass in crafting the perfect thick-cut spuds." - jackie gutierrez jones 2, ann walczak, adam sloan

Google
This burger place is a cutie. There’s huge positives like stellar burgers, GREAT fries, lots of condiment options, etc… with only one to two negatives I could find. One of those being, as others have mentioned, only outdoor seating. The second, which to be fair we did not ask about, is that we couldn’t find a bathroom- which can make a good greasy burger a bit difficult to take down. Other than that, we spent a bit over $50 for 2 burgers, a soda, and a patty melt, so honestly everything is priced well!! Really I would go out of my way to come here again, because it can be so hard to find a good burger- this one’s worth it if you can take those two cons :)

Google
Great local classic burger joint. The fenced in area is great to goof with the kids while you wait for your order.

Google
Super burger spot! Nice, simple covered area to sit and eat what is one of the best burgers I’ve tried for ages. Fries are hand cut and dead crispy, burger is dead tasty, and whilst I’m still not sure about serving the salad garnishes separately, it does make some sort of sense! Bun was great too. Had some wings and they were ace too. All round a sound stop off.

Roza Grochal

Google
Very cool burger place! I tried the burger and hot chicken sandwhich, and while the chicken was good, I preferred the burger a bit more. As a tourist in Nashville, I really recommend this place!

Google
The best burger in Nashville. When I write reviews about other places with burgers I'll usually say something about how they are good but you can find better. This is the place I'm talking about. $12 gets you a 5 oz patty on a delicious bun with some delicious crispy fries. And what a burger. It's got a crunch to it from crisping on the griddle but it's not a true smash burger. The meat remains juicy, rich in beefy umani flavor while resting on this lightly toasted but fluffy bun. And definitely spend the 50 cents for the extra cheese. The location is what it says, a shack. There are picnic tables under a covered area in this gravel lot. Parking is usually pretty easy. They also offer wings which are good if not the greatest but make a wonderful add on. The grilled cheese is also a solid choice if you are not feeling very beefy . But really try the burger, get extra cheese maybe get an extra patty. So delicious you won't regret it.

Google
Great burgerspot. The burger and fries are top-notch with that crispy edge smash burger. Outdoor seating only, but if the weather sucks plenty of car spots and the food is packed well. Place stays busy so be prepared to wait a bit, but definatly worth the wait.

Google
We really liked the cheeseburger and fries, which it the first item listed on their posted menu. The fries, hand-cut at the restaurant, were also excellent. BUT: All of the sparse seating is outside, right next to a busy railroad track. All condiments are placed on the side, and all meals are served in paperboard takeout cartons. If none of that bothers you, the food is pretty good. I enjoyed it more than my wife did, but we both found it a tad pricey: $30+ for the two burgers and fries, plus one IBC root beer.

Google
Small little place in the middle of nowhere. Very simple outdoor layout. The food was amazing. You definitely don't go for the decorations. The best burger I have ever had and the fries where nice and thick. Great portion super, friendly person taking your orders. My wife and I talked about the food for the rest of the week afterwards. Would definitely recommend and would go back. I am a fan. Just don't expect this great atmosphere. The food is where it's at! The do separate your condiments from your burger and buns which isn't a big deal. I think it's so it doesn't get soggy or you just put what you want and what you don't want.

Yelp
Not just good burgers and excellent fries. Dining alfresco is great. Love this place. Chicken wings also.

Yelp
Best fries!! The fries are so so so good! Burger toppings were super fresh. My only feedback is that it's too much bun for the patty. Burger patty is good. Just wish the bun was smaller.

Yelp
Terrible service. I ordered a burger and kids tenders and fries. (The person at the window most definitely saw I was with a small kiddo.) Instead I was given and charged for a 1lb chicken tenders and fries. When I went back to the window to explain the mix up they said well there's not much difference in the kids and the 1lb. I said yes there is! There's a difference in price and amount of food. I specifically ordered for a child. She's like well I figured you could take it home as left overs. Ummm, Excuse me what??? In my head I'm thinking...Now we're just charging and placing orders for whatever we think is best for the customer?? So instead of making it right she looked at me and said do you want me to take out some of the tenders and fries? Well you can imagine I was pissed. Never going back. They should've apologized for the mix up, fixed the order and refunded me the difference without hesitation and without the back and forth. That would've been proper customer service. Honestly mad at myself for going here.

Yelp
On a dark and dreary Saturday evening I needed good food and quick. My lady was out of town so my usual restrictions related to gluten free and veggie options were not in force so I decided to give full heed to my appetite for something I wanted-something tasty, something comforting and satisfying. A burger and fries. Now, where to go. Since I'm fairly new to EAST Nashville I decided to hit up the Yelps and I remembered that one of the selections presented to me had been recommended by an Eastie, The Grill Shack. I checked out the photos, the reviews and decided it was worth my time, money and calories and made my way down to this literal shack-beside the railroad tracks. It looks like a bait shop or some sort of mom-pop appliance or hardware store form the past but if you look closely you'll see a walk up window, a menu a table with some supplies and a few picnic tables for sitting. The crowd assembled there that night didn't speak or nod or share words, it was like we were there for our fix and didn't want to acknowledge the need we had, for a burger and fries. After ordering we waited in silence until the good goodness was ready. Can I say it was worth the wait and the time and the money and the calories. Both burger and fries were solid, no shame in their game. They have the receipe down for spicy ketchup-it's better than that national joint from TX that's moving in to the Nashville area. If my lady would allow, I'd eat it once on Monday, twice on Wednesday and three times on Sunday. When you need a burger and fries you don't need fancy, you need good honest solid food-Grill Shack is all that and more. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Had a long day of flying and wanted a burger. We were here from AZ and wanted to try places we don't have there. I picked here and it was so good! If I lived here I would definitely be a regular!

Yelp
Anytime I'm away from home, I like to explore the foodie scene. I was in Nashville and hungry for a great burger so I searched Yelp and this came up. I thought, "Why not." This definitely qualifies for a spot on Diners, Drive-ins & Dives. This business is in an area of the city that is in the midst of gentrification, so it's a mish-mash area of decrepit business and homes as well as abodes worthy of being featured in Architectural Digest. This place draws from the blue collar community as evidenced by a half dozen patrons who drove up in their work trucks. It was 1:30 pm and people were still having a meal. The business is on a corner lot facing Riverside Drive with the rail road tracks behind it. Not much has been done to spruce the place up but that didn't seem to deter hungry patrons. I ordered the 1/3 # burger reportedly from locally sourced beef with a side of fries. The employee was friendly enough, took my order and let me know that it would be ready in 12 minutes. And in 12 minutes, ready it was. My gosh, the serving of fries was large enough to feed three people. I don't know what their secret was but the crunch on the fries was incredible . The bun was nicely toasted, the meat was close to well done and the condiments were on the side and overall it was an enjoyable meal. Although the meal was good, there is nothing I experienced that would cause me to return. I would have given another star had the exterior appearance been more pleasant. All it takes is a coat of paint. There are no restroom facilities on site.

Yelp
If you want the best "backyard" burger and ginormous fries, check out Grill Shack. One of my favorite burger shops in town!
google avatar

Ali M.

Yelp
I love this place! Maybe my favorite burgers in town. And DEFINITELY my favorite fries. The fries are SO good. I recommend the Grown Up Grilled cheese and add a patty so it's a patty melt. I got that for the first time the other day. I bet it's even better with grilled onions - next time I will do that. Comes with house made ranch - also excellent. But the regular burger is also fabulous. Always friendly service. Not a lot of tables.

Yelp
Visited TN. and now if I'm ever near this place you can bet I'll be eating there. Food was excellent reminded me of a true mom and pop shop.

Yelp
This place has amazing burgers! We're visiting Nashville this week and this place came highly recommended by a local. It did not disappoint. My daughter and I stopped for lunch. We both had the Grillshack burger and fries with an IBC soda. The burgers were flavorful and juicy and the hand cut fries were crispy on the outside and soft in the middle - in a word, perfect! There is simple picnic table, shaded outdoor seating and great music was playing on the radio. Service was friendly and fast. Highly recommend this place for a great meal.

Yelp
First time at this cute little stop. We were able to order right away, but there were a few orders before us. We didn't have to wait long for our burgers to be ready. The cheeseburgers were delicious! The buns were perfect and fluffy, and they didn't fall apart. Plus I loved the pickles. They also give a massive amount of fries with the burgers. Those were also cooked to perfection and were crispy. We were able to sit at a one of their picnic tables. There are several to choose from. There is also a large grassy area there that you could easily have a little picnic there. It was a perfect day to support cute local business. We will be back.

Yelp
Best damn Fries!!! Unfortunately the burger (patty melt) was just alittle too salty for me to give this five stars.. but if weather is nice it's a great little place... next time would consider ordering online so the wait wouldn't be so long but because the fries were soo good it was worth the wait!!

Yelp
I have loved this spot since moving to Nashville in 2013. GRASS FED & LOCAL, need I say more? The flavor of the Grillshack burger and fries is so addictive and the spicy ketchup is FIRE. I love everything about feeling like I am with family or friends in a backyard eating off the farm and fresh off the grill. The outdoor picnic tables and lights are cozy. The staff are phenomenal and while it's a small spot, it's always worth it!

Mary Anna T.

Yelp
Price is amazing, portions are huge, and the "shack" itself is super cool. Amazing summer spot 15/10

Weslee P.

Yelp
This has become our new favorite neighborhood hangout spot. The burgers are one of the best we've had in Nashville. A good wholesome place for delicious food
google avatar

Blake M.

Yelp
After driving by for 6 years I finally tried the little shop on Riverside, The patty melt was good, felt like the patty could have used more seasoning. The tender meal while good 1 sauce with the size of them isn't going to cut it.

Yelp
Talk about the surprise of the day! My wife and I did not know what to expect when we were looking for places to eat and grab a burger, but finding Grillshack fries and burgers made the drive 100% worth it! We were greeted the moment we walked up to the window and we're given a 15-18 minute wait time for our food to be ready. We were splitting the grill shack burger and fries along with a side of medium buffalo wings. Upon receiving our food, we were pleasantly surprised with the portion amount really received as both wings and burgers came with their own set of fries. It's no wonder why they put the word fries in the name of the business because they were legit! Every single bite of the burger, wings, and fries was of excellent taste and temperature. Even though the temperature was pretty warm outside, we were able to sit in a little patio with two benches and really enjoyed the people watching and cool breeze.

Yelp
Such a solid burger joint. Really nice sized burger and fries. Pro tip - get the grilled onions added and this burger is a home run.
google avatar

Quigley Q.

Yelp
The food is good fries are the highlight. The low point of this establishment is one guy who works here. Has a beard and wears a hat. Everything he says to you sounds passive aggressive and rude. Always rushing you as well and then just gives you a stupid smirk because he knows exactly what he's doing. Don't know his name but oh well he'll know who he is.
google avatar

Trace S.

Yelp
Just introduced a visiting friend to this burger and fries wonder! Always SO GOOD! Can't wait to make it back.

Keegan G.

Yelp
Without a doubt the best burger and fries in the entire state of Tennessee. This is not a drill.
google avatar

Allison B.

Yelp
This is more of a warning to someone who might consider ordering the chicken tenders. Don't. They are the cheapest option of frozen chicken tenders from GFS or Sysco. I've had better chicken at gas stations. The burgers here are great. Highly recommend, but you'd think a place that uses grass fed beef and makes their own fries would either do their own chicken too, or buy a better quality selection from their purveyor. I just hate that I wasted $20 on them only to end up throwing them away. Also, on the menu it says "half lb of chicken tenders", but on the kids menu it says "two chicken tenders. I got three for the "1/2lb" portion.

Will M.

Yelp
My family enjoyed eating at the Grillshack. The fries were great and all the food was tasty.

Sam B.

Yelp
Best fries i've ever had in my life. They are perfect. Everything else is good too. it's a grill in a shack and they serve good food.

Yelp
Best Fries and Spicy Ketchup I have ever had!!! Absolutely Incredible!! Burger was Great too!! Wonderful Service!! First time here and we will be back!!!

Yelp
Burgers and fries were great! Service was friendly and fast. We love burger dives and this fit us perfectly!

Yelp
This little place doesn't look like much but the food was really good. We were visiting Nashville and wanted some good local burgers but didn't really want to go find parking downtown. We stumbled across this little gem and we were happy that we did. The burgers were good and the fries were great. The spicy buffalo wings were really tasty too. Prices were a little high for burgers but still worth it.
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
Very good hamburger and incredible fries. The place doesn't look like much but the food is very good.

Mylon P.

Yelp
Summary: Grillshack does one thing super well. A burger & fries, and they only have one burger. They are simple, quick, easy, well priced, and delicious. Are they the best burger I've ever eaten? No, but they are super good, and their fries are awesome too. Order: Burger and fries About: $14 I had spent early part of the afternoon at coffee shop and knew I was headed to hike for a few hours so I wanted to get some good, and hopefully not super expensive, food that afternoon. I read a couple of reviews and saw a lot of really good things about Grillshack. I'm not normally big burger guy but something about the idea of a place that just does one burger and fries really well intrigued me so that's where I landed. It is super low-key; it's basically a small building with a to go window a few picnic tables outside under a covered awning and that's it. They serve a few different items but really they basically have one thing. The grillshack burger and fries. It's what every single person got while I was there and it's what they recommend. So clearly that's what I got. It's an incredibly simple burger with toppings kind of on the side, lettuce tomato pickles, and their fries are home cut and absolutely delicious. There's really not a ton to say about grillshack except I would absolutely come here anytime I wanted a burger. It's almost like someone took the "fast food burger" and then made it delicious but still kept it at a somewhat reasonable price. I definitely recommend people go, and I could see myself going again when I'm back in Nashville.
google avatar

Sean S.

Yelp
100% Must have!! So good, a lot of food for price! Great service! 10/10. If there is was a down fall it's the parking but the food makes it worth it.

Terry W.

Yelp
Five stars for the burger and home cut fries!! They were both delicious. BUT WHATEVER YOU DO... DO NOT order the "chicken fingers". They're horrible frozen pieces of yuck. Lol Worse than the freezer burned frozen Tyson chicken fingers you bought from Kroger a year ago and forgot about and put in the oven and ate anyway because you smoked a bowl. Aaaack. A total waste of money.
google avatar

Omega S.

Yelp
Literally the best burger I've ever had. I came all the way from Texas to try it and it did not disappoint!!!

Foody M.

Yelp
This used to be one of my go-to spots for a good burger and fries, but last night I got legitimate food poisoning from this place. I ordered the grillshack burger and fries and I was up all night puking every half hour until I was dry heaving. I nearly passed out and contemplated going to the ER. It was the only thing I ate that day. I'm writing this review in the hope that they do better to keep the kitchen clean and make sure food is fresh so nobody else has this experience. That said, I won't be going back.

Kevin H.

Yelp
Amazing burger. Fries were fantastic! Do yourself a favor and get a wonderful meal. Picnic table outside side dining. FYI.
google avatar

Tamera T.

Yelp
Sooooo it's really good! Definitely recommend calling ahead of time so you don't have to wait, and it's cold outside! I will go back when it gets warmer, be slow to driving up, you will miss the parking spots if you go too fast. They are to your right if you're coming from Gallatin pike. I wish it was better parking but it's not as bad in the day time, just harder at night because they're aren't really lights over there. I do like how it's set up. I'm not really a fan of the bags they give you, they're overly big and just take up room. I don't know if it's cooked in peanut oil but i did start itching afterward ( I have allergies though) it's a 10/10 well seasoned, fresh and delicious! Probably one of the best I had in the ville!
google avatar

Tom L.

Yelp
Destination burgers and fries, the best in Nashville, hands down. Creativity sparkles in everything this tiny but mighty place does--the balance of flavors, the freshness of the ingredients, the right-off-the-grill service, and the handmade spicy condiments. Hell, even the portion sizes are perfect. We took a late Saturday lunch recently and we were good to go all day long. Nonstop smile from start to finish.
google avatar

Jacob S.

Yelp
I'm up from Florida visiting friends that live locally. My 2nd trip to the area. Heard rave reviews of the must have fries and burger. Finally got to try the bacon grilled cheese and cheese burger. Holy cow good. We split the sammiches so I could try both. Phenomenal. And the fries were no joke legit. The horseradish ranch, spicy catsup and blue cheese (of so chunky) didn't last long. I think we dipped everything in them. A must try if you're in the neighborhood. Can't wait until the next visit!

Yelp
VEGAN FOOD REVIEW: The Grillshack is a no-frills order at the window place with a few tables under a covered side space to eat if you don't want to take your food to go. When we crave french fries these are the fries we want- thick cut (albeit a tad too greasy) and a generous portion with several custom dipping sauces to choose from. I wish we could say the same about the burgers. We SO want to love this place but after two disappointing visits we'll have to relegate ourselves to enjoying their fries only from now on. On a visit months ago we ordered their Impossible burger and when we got them we couldn't believe how thin the patty was. It looked like a burger from one of those cheap chain burger joints. So thin that the taste of the burger was not discernible inside the bun. At $15 a burger we want to taste the burger! We decided to give them another try yesterday and instead ordered their housemade veggie patty. Again it was so thin all we tasted was the bun and condiments. I don't know how their beef burgers are, I have to think they must be better or people wouldn't keep coming back. But why do they feel the need to skimp so badly on their two vegan options? Very disappointed that Grillshack can't be a place for those who eat vegan to enjoy a burger.
google avatar

Ruth W.

Yelp
Not a fancy place but conveniently located right down the street from my house in Inglewood. Their homemade spicy ketchup and other sauces (bleu cheese/goat cheese/mayo) were delish. The burger itself was a bit dry and seemed like just a regular picnic burger (not a fancy brioche bun, no fancy additional aioli or other grilled veggies, very regular meat, akin to Costco's frozen patties), but the fries were very good - satisfying crunch with the aroma of a successful Maillard reaction yet thick and meaty but not too dry. We also got a set of bbq wings and those were excellent as well. About 50$ for two people, I find a bit pricey for the quality and ambience (essentially a food truck), but does satisfy a craving.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
I mostly eat here due to the convenience. Their fries are fire- hand cut and addicting. The burgers, are not my style, but I will gladly eat them when I do not feel like cooking. My main issue with the burger is the bun and the cheese (Munster) - I just feel they don't jive well. But again, I continue to eat here and I'm satisfied.
google avatar

Noelle M.

Yelp
Best burger and fries in Nashville. My husband and I drive from Madison just to chow down. The spicy ketchup is also amazing. We appreciate this place and will always come back for more!
google avatar

Stephanie V.

Yelp
3.5/5 No frills, greasy burger with locally sourced meat and a delicious bun! We ordered two Grillshack burgers: they come with fries and toppings are on the side. So you'll need to assemble it yourself. The assembly was a bit difficult since the cheese stuck on both sides; but I guess gooey cheese is always a good thing. I didn't realize we needed to pick up condiments so good thing I had some at home. With some many burger places, it's so hard to compare. They all are so different. If you want a good, somewhat greasy, and flavorful basic burger and fries, grill shack is the way to go! Next time I'll definitely add on grilled onions and bacon. With 20% tip and tax it came to about $13 per burger. Not too bad when you're wanting a nice burger.
google avatar

Marlainna V.

Yelp
Had the grilled cheese and WOW! Blown away!!! And such a fun place to sit outside as well!
google avatar

Art W.

Yelp
I'm from Nashville and there's very few spots I'll write a review for, but I keep coming back here. I'll assume you haven't tried this place before, so here's the deal with this spot: it comes in a to-go box, and the tables are picnic tables, so the prices are cheaper. But the food, it's super fire. That phat old fashioned burger with good beef and fresh toppings, those saucy wings with the CORRECT hot sauce, even the wedge salad is just right. It's consistent, and I'm not trying to deviate from what's good. Those fries with the spicy ketchup, though, that's why you're really here...
google avatar

Brianna E.

Yelp
I loved this place. It was 3 minutes from my Airbnb so I ate it twice. Was not disappointed. The burgers were not too dry. The fries were thick and well seasoned, also night dry. I liked the convenience of the high quality food since it's just a shack and not a full restaurant.
google avatar

Sarah T.

Yelp
Yes yes yes! This is an absolute must. Everything on the menu is delicious whenever family or friends come to visit we always pick up from here! We have also told all of our Airbnb guests to try it and they all rave about the food as well! It's an absolute must!
google avatar

Yelp
Their burgers and fries always hit the spot. I love their spicy ketchup and horseradish sauce. So good. Reminds me of an old school snack stand at a ballgame.

Yelp
Well I have to say it's unique and that definitely counts. I got a pretty straight forward meal. Burger & fries. No cheese. The bun was above average - no "Bunny Bread" involved. The burger was served with all condiments on the side (lettuce, tomato, & onion were fresh); mustard & mayo in packets. Assembly required. It was reasonably good, but I wouldn't say anything outstanding. The fries were above average. Large diameter and cut with the skin on - very tasty. I asked for water to drink and was handed a plastic bottle. On my receipt it said "soda can" with a charge of $1. Didn't know that there would be a charge and nothing was said about it when I ordered. My meal total $13.75 - but this was an $8-9 burger and fry even if you took off the water. Does this mean don't go? No, not necessarily. It's a neat spot with outdoor seating (I should mention - only outdoor seating) and it's off the beaten path, so the uniqueness factor does count. But plan to drop $30 or so for two people to eat if you do anything but the bare minimums.

Oh. My. Word. I'm 13 weeks pregnant and my baby NEEDED a perfectly cooked, flavorful, and fresh burger. The burger needed to be paired with crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, perfectly seasoned French fries. YA'LL. Grillshack conquered my craving and went above and beyond my expectations! Those fries were some of the best I've ever had. I ordered the spicy ketchup, horseradish ranch, and honey mustard sauces to dip my fries and burger in. Have mercy... I think I died and went to heaven with every BITE. Do yourself a favor and go eat here, NOW!
