Today I was craving burgers, but I didn't want to go to a place I've visited before. So I opened up my Yelp app and started browsing for burger joins that were within reasonable proximity to me. I stumbled across Grillshack Fries & Burgers and was pleasantly pleased that it was within 5 minutes of my work.
As other reviewers have mentioned, this is a straight up hole-in-the-wall. You order at the window and you have the option of sitting outside on their covered patio or inside a no-frills seating area. I opted to sit outside just because it was a sunny winter day.
The ordering process is easy. Look at the menu taped on the glass, talk to the cashier on the window to the right. They only serve one kind of meat burger, the classic burger. The other burgers are either a veggie burger or Impossible burger. Other items on the menu include wings & tenders, wedge salads, and grilled cheese. Since I was there for a burger, I ordered the Grillshack Burger w/ Bacon (cooked medium) & Fries meal ($11.95) along with IBC Cream Soda. Basically bottled drinks are $2, canned drinks are $1. Not too shabby.
The burger itself was good. The meat was overcooked and a little dry but it was seasoned nicely. I read on the menu that the beef is grass-fed. Grass-fed beef is a bit leaner than grain-fed beef. And anyone who is wise in cooking burgers knows that lean ground beef = dry ground beef. I never had Muenster cheese on a burger but I was pleasantly surprised. Mild, rich, salty, this semi-soft cheese is pretty good on a burger. A side of lettuce, tomato, red onion, and dill pickle slices came on the side. I asked to omit the red onion, as sometimes it gives me heartburn. I wish the lettuce came as whole leaves instead of shredded, but it wasn't that big of a deal. Everything came together as a whole and this was a good burger. I'd come back again.
The all-star of the meal were the fries. These fries were A-M-A-Z-I-N-G and I'm usually not a fry person. Yes I'll acknowledge when they are good but I try to avoid eating too many (carbs people, carbs). Hand-cut Idaho Russets which Grillshack says goes through a 5-stage cooking process. I never knew fries had a 5-stage cooking process but these were great. A perfect blend of crispy, chewy, buttery, & salty profiles. Mix them with their spicy ketchup and I found myself eating almost the whole pile. A nice piece of trivia about Grillshack is that they used to be a food truck selling these exact fries called Uber-Tuber Food Truck.
If you're wanting a no-frills, classic burger with some of the best fries in existence, I suggest you give Grillshack a try.
