Newest Charleston Restaurants Openings to Know Right Now, June 2025 | Eater Carolinas

"Baker Allison Anspach, who worked at a vegan bakery in New Orleans after graduating from Tulane and later attended culinary school in San Diego, opened this neighborhood bakery with her husband John Nagler to focus on bread and dough-based pastries. Located at 601 Meeting Street, the shop highlights seasonal ingredients from Grow Food, aims to be a convenient stop for baguettes, loaves, and simple breakfast pastries, and keeps a rotating menu while always offering staples such as a scone, a plain croissant, and a chocolate croissant." - Erin Perkins

Google
LITERALLY an amazing bakery. We had the Morning Bun, Croissant, and Tomato Pesto Focaccia- every single thing was insanely good. The croissant and bun were baked to perfection. They were super fresh, crispy, and just so satisfying! Honestly could write them a full on love letter than just this review. Can’t wait to go back!

So happy to have Grit Bakery in the neighborhood! The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the bread and pastries are fantastic. I ordered the semolina bread loaf, pan Suisse, the daily loaf cake, and a custard-filled pastry. They were all great! Don’t let the location on Meeting St and Huger St stop you from visiting - there was plenty of parking in the parking garage behind the storefront.

Very cute coffee spot with a wide variety of options to choose from. The outdoor seating area is spacious, and there are also some cozy spots inside. It’s dog-friendly, which is a big plus, and having garage parking makes it super convenient. The staff is friendly, and the coffee is absolutely delicious!

Grit bakery is part of my morning routine where I go and grab some of the best muffins, and then I head on over for some coffee and study time at Blum Coffee and Wine Bar down the street. great service here from the gals in the front counter and even better pastries. Very fresh. We will continue to return.

I’m visiting Charleston for the weekend, and found Grit Bakery online. I was looking for a scone specifically, and the one at Grit is excellent. The staff is very friendly, and they serve Counter Culture coffee, made on a super cool yellow La Marzocco espresso machine. They have multiple kinds of croissants, sweet breads (pumpkin, etc.), and cookies, as well as sourdough loaves and baguettes.

Such a cute space and awesome baked goods! I came for the opening this morning and I have already gobbled up the cheddar green onion biscuit. It was delicious! Can’t wait to try the rest and will definitely be back!

Google
Incredible atmosphere and bakery! Super cool vibe. We tried the ham and cheese croissant, the salted chocolate chip cookies (which my kids adored), and the chocolate croissant. They were all amazing!! And very reasonable prices. The staff was super nice and helpful. We can't wait to make this a weekend staple before it gets too popular :)

I'm from Portland Maine where we have no shortage of delicious bakeries, and I was really impressed with Grit! The sourdough was great and the cheddar biscuit was as good as my favorite biscuit from Tandem Bakery back home. Plus a great space and great coffee as a bonus!

Yelp
So great! Their pastries were all so good and the iced latte was perfect. Cute ambiance, music isn't loud and very enjoyable environment / spot to do work. Great service as well!

Yelp
This bakery inhibits a ground level space in the more urban part of Charleston where it isn't particularly easy to park. There are a handful of tables inside and outside for those who want to eat something on site. The spread looked majestic, and having asked for an almond croissant, I was offered the choice to get one with chocolate or without which was a fairly easy decision. In addition to my chocolate almond croissant, I took some sort of chai based breakfast roll to go and ate it later. The croissant was the better of the two with a moist and luxurious filling. I did not have need for loaves at the time, but bread was available and it looked just as good.

Yelp
The bakery was nice, airy, clean and bright. We were walking to another restaurant and the freshly baked garlic bread lured us in. I had a cheddar biscuit and a pecan and coconut cookie. My daughter had a salt and caramel twist. She inhaled the whole thing without sharing a bite with me . The lady behind the counter was very nice and pleasant. We'd come back in the future.

Yelp
This place is ELITE. Truly next level pastries. I've been all over the US mowing down croissants and other breakfast pastries--NYC, SF, LA, SD, Philly, Miami, you name it. I've been to numerous European major cities--Paris, Amsterdam, Munich, etc. It is by no means an exaggeration to say that I have never had better pastries than those I sampled at Grit earlier today. Everything is good, but the French Onion Soup croissant was unlike anything I had ever had before 10/10 would recommend. Oh, and don't sleep on the coffee! Had an amazing cortado. I will be back!

Yelp
My favorite local bakery! I've had everything from savory pastries to sweet seasonal pastries and they are incredible. Highly recommend! There is free 2 hr parking in the Meeting Street Loft complex if you want to work there. So happy this bakery opened up in the neighborhood.
