The restaurant has an upscale atmosphere -- definitely a step above your average casual soul food joint -- with a warm, stylish interior that makes you feel like you're in for something special. From what I could tell, parking is limited to street parking, so keep that in mind if you're planning a visit during a busy time. The service was great; our waitress was sweet, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed without hovering.
Now, onto the food. I tried several items on the menu, and while the presentation and textures were on point, I did find that a lot of the dishes were under-seasoned.
The Shrimp N' Gritz had a great consistency and the shrimp were cooked well, but they lacked that bold flavor I was hoping for.
The Catfish was nicely fried -- crisp on the outside and tender inside -- but again, it needed a little more seasoning to really bring it to life.
The Wingz N' Wafflez were visually impressive, and the wings were juicy and fried just right, but the waffle had a strange tangy aftertaste that I just couldn't get past. The texture of the waffle itself was perfect though light, fluffy, with crispy edges which made it all the more disappointing that the flavor didn't quite land.
The Homestyle Potatoes were good hearty and cooked to the right texture but a little more spice would've taken them over the top.
The Sweet Tea was classic and refreshing, not too sweet, and paired well with the food.
But the absolute standout dish for me was the Celestial Eggs. These were so heavenly they really did deserve a new name. Fried deviled eggs might sound heavy, but these were light, crispy, and absolutely addictive. Topped with Mama's Zula Creole seasoning, they had the best texture of any fried deviled egg I've ever had. Honestly, I'd come back just for those.
All in all, while the food could use a bit more seasoning to match the care clearly put into the cooking and plating, it was still a solid experience, I don't know if I returned the tangy waffle ruined some of the over all experience for me.
