20 Seriously Decadent Breakfast Sandwiches in Los Angeles

"Chef Jurni Rayne’s breakfast sandwich is not for the weak. Her creation starts with slightly crispy Texas toast that’s soft on the inside, eggs, and a choice of the following: bacon, fried catfish or shrimp, chicken tenders, wings, or sauteed shrimp. Enjoy on-site, along with the soulful vibes." - Eater Staff

4 Restaurants to Try This Weekend in Los Angeles: May 3 - Eater LA

"In Southern California, gray May can be one of the most hated and beloved times of the year. Though LA’s overcast skies can burn off slightly in the later hours, the overcast mood sets in for the day, along with local complaints about the pending summertime. One of the many ways to fight LA’s seasonal darkness is to head straight to an LA soul food spot and order something delicious. Gritz N Wafflez chef Jurni Rayne keeps a steady flow of crowds on the weekends. The typically lengthy wait is worth it because the regulars adore her cheesy and savory grits, bacon and cheese-encrusted waffles, and perfect catfish. I appreciate her understanding of when to remove the fried chicken or catfish from the fryer so that both remain perfectly moist. Another idea: order the deep-fried eggs, collard green dip, cinnamon toast, and whatever jumps out to you. Take the items to a park, and watch the sun break through the clouds." - Eater Staff

The Best Dishes Eater LA Editors Ate This Year, Mapped

"It’s not uncommon for out-of-towners to take repeat meals at chef Jurni Rayne’s Gritz N Wafflez. It’s regularly packed because visitors want to make sure her bacon and cheese-encrusted waffles, and some of the city’s best Southern fried catfish weren’t a fluke. Rayne has a sixth sense of when to remove the fish from the fryer so it retains moisture filled with the right amount of seasoning and a cornmeal battered bite. One cannot go wrong if consuming the catfish on a waffle or a bed of grits. — Mona Holmes, reporter" - Eater Staff

Beverly Hills Declares It Won’t Enforce LA County’s Impending Mask Mandate - Eater LA

"The Los Angeles Times’ Jenn Harris took a fun drive with Hotville Chicken owner Kim Prince in the backseat of a 1973 Oldsmobile 98 topped with a rooster head. As the two rode around LA, they visited 10 female-run restaurants that serve fried chicken in one day, including Gritz N Wafflez and Annie’s Soul Delicious." - Mona Holmes

I ordered the shrimp n vanilla bean waffles with a side of fried devil eggs and a peach lemonade. First, the customer service was on point and the food was very fresh and came out quickly for it to be busy. The fried shrimp had the perfect amount of seasoning and crisp. You could taste the vanilla in the waffle and they put enough butter for the entire waffle. I didn't have to ask for more. I have the atmosphere a 4 star because of the area it's in and parking isn't ideal at all. Glad another location is opening.

This restaurant has a personality of its own. The food is great!! Fish and chicken fried to perfection!! Waffles taste amazing as well as the lemonade drinks. And the service is top notch!! Charles makes sure everyone is comfortable and his personality is very welcoming and comforting. He is a comedian as well, which makes it even better!! A must go to place.

We finally went to Gritz n Waffles and enjoyed the wings & waffles. Their atmosphere had a nice vibe and the waiter was bubbly, welcoming, and attentive to all of our questions/needs. Once we ordered our food it took less than five minutes get our food. The waffles were very light and flavorful. In addition the wings were tasty and fried to a crispy brown just like I fry my wings. Totally satisfied and will return to patronize the business.

I had an amazing experience here at Gritz N’ Wafflez!! I would recommend making reservations but as a walk-in—it was still WORTH the wait. I enjoyed everything that I had. The temperature of the food, the portions are great, the lemonade it good and the appetizers are also very creative/delicious. The batter that is used for the wafflez & even the fried chicken tenders was soooo amazing! The staff was very pleasant, patient & attentive. Everyone was good looking/eye candy as well but the representation was EVERYTHING. Not to mention that this is a Black Owned & Operated Business! I can’t wait to come back and patronize it again.

We were visiting the area from Washington, DC our thoughts of the food were as followed. It was under season bland food. The service was great however the food tasted like nothing. The area is pretty tight space. The service was good. We just did not enjoy any of our food. The prices are high for what.

Went around 11 am, there wasn’t a lot of people waiting but it was full inside. I ordered ahead to go so 5 minutes or so and I was out of there. Ordered collard green dip. First time trying and I wasn’t disappointed, but I am biased so I would’ve still preferred spinach dip. But if you love spinach dip I’m certain you’ll love this one as well. And those house made chips, ugh just sell them to me by itself and i would’ve ordered more. They are so good. Fried sweet grits was a treat. Never heard of it before but I definitely liked it. Catfish, ugh. They didn’t miss. Let me tell you, if I could’ve ordered the whole menu I would have just to try everything. Customer service, 10/10. They were all super nice, definitely has that southern hospitality on lock. Be aware parking is atrocious and people can’t drive so prepare yourself ahead of time to be irritated with that aspect but I heard they’ll have a second location open soon so that should make it better. And the seating inside was not the best, but apparently that had no affect on people because it was still packed. If you haven’t tried it, do yourself a favor and go get you some.

As we stepped into the restaurant, we were immediately greeted by a friendly hostess who seated us without any delay. The prompt and attentive service set the tone for what would prove to be a delightful dining experience. Our server approached our table with a warm smile and a professional demeanor, ready to guide us through the menu and answer any questions we had. The restaurant's commitment to providing excellent service was evident in every interaction. When our food arrived, it was clear that the kitchen staff took great pride in their craft. My breakfast sandwich arrived piping hot, with steam rising from the perfectly toasted bread. As I took my first bite, I was struck by the harmonious blend of flavors—the savory meat, the creamy cheese, and the fresh vegetables all working together in perfect unison. It was evident that the chef had carefully considered each ingredient to create a truly memorable dish. My family, too, was thoroughly impressed with their meals. The appetizer we shared was a hit, with each bite eliciting murmurs of satisfaction around the table. The portions were generous, and the presentation was visually appealing, further enhancing our dining experience. As we left the restaurant, we couldn't help but reflect on the wonderful time we had. The combination of prompt service, a warm atmosphere, and delicious, well-prepared food made for a truly enjoyable dining experience. We left with full stomachs and happy hearts, eager to return and explore more of the menu in the future.
