Grotto Ristorante is inside the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas. It is a weird place, a throwback to "old" Vegas. It feels like it's a place where "everybody knows your name," so it is quaint and old school. The seating is either inside the restaurant proper (more likely at night), or in a limbo state of a hallway lounge (which is not as bad as it sounds) during the day, for lunch. The hallway lounge area has carpet, comfortable vinyl seats, and faces the hotel pool. It is orange and beige and very surreal. Squinting up at it near the window in the restaurant, you feel almost that you are in a cruise ship. It's fun! It's odd. The vibe is very 80-year old golfers, but SO uncool, it's inverted hip.
You can't beat the lunch deal. $15 for 2 courses! The first course we selected was the DELICIOUS tomato soup with basil and dill. Yum, yum, and yum. The second course I got was the Scallopine with spinach. (Not on the menu, but an adaptation because I divulged to the very nice waiter that I was on a "keto" meal plan. Ordinarily, this dish comes with a side of mouthwatering pasta--I know, because I saw a nearby dining neighbor get it, and I resisted the urge to grab a fistful of spaghetti and run back to my table). My lunch partner ordered the lasagna, and I was seriously fighting food envy, and cursing keto. It looked boss! And by the way she was devouring it, (albeit politely, no elbows on the table), I KNEW it was good, without her having to say so (though she did). The portions were generous, and both of us had to take doggy bags.
Now this is not my normal food foray. It's not hipster bro, trendy, foodie fabulous, exotic epicurean, or deep comfort food. It was perfect to open my eyes and broaden my downtown horizons. The hostess and our server were excellent. But the whole experience was a little weird, almost like I was having a lunch at a quality nursing home cafeteria with a very excellent chef. And you know what...? I think I like it.
