I’m appalled by the experience we had at Grounded Whitechapel on Thursday 26th June.
My friend has a severe nut allergy and was served a chicken sandwich containing pesto with no allergen warnings listed on the menu or label. This is a serious breach of food safety protocols and allergen labelling standards.
When we raised the issue, the waitress called Emma, showed no empathy and offered no apology. We asked to speak with a manager or senior staff member, but were told that no one was available at the time. Instead, staff told us to call the next day, saying their manager Meggie would be expecting our call. We followed their instructions – but no one answered, and we’ve since had no response to our repeated phone calls, emails, or DMs.
The staff seemed uninformed about the ingredients in their own food, only validating our suspicions of the pesto once the chef confirmed, but still remained dismissive of the seriousness of the situation. Had we not caught the error after just two bites, the outcome could have been far more severe.
We are incredibly frustrated that such a dangerous mistake has been ignored and mishandled. It’s clear that this issue is not being taken seriously. We felt so uncomfortable, disappointed and angry with our experience that we left without touching the rest of our food.
If you or someone you care about has food allergies – or if you expect even basic customer service and accountability – I strongly recommend avoiding this restaurant. This experience ruined the rest of the day for my friend, who was physically sick afterwards, felt anxious and unsafe as a result.
Food allergies are not a minor issue – and the way this was handled was not only disappointing, but downright irresponsible.
