Grumpy's is a revamped cozy pub near the Embarcadero, serving up legendary burgers, new Grandma-style pies, and a lively ambiance perfect for locals.
"Grumpy's is back after a five-year hiatus, and the burger is still a standout. The two-patty burger, with perfectly caramelized onions and ropey layers of cheese, is worth the visit alone. While the rest of the menu doesn’t wow, the lively renovated dining room and late-ish hours make it a solid spot to try at least once—you might even spot a local celeb from the nearby TV news stations." - julia chen 1, ricky rodriguez, patrick wong
"After a four-year closure, Grumpy’s is back under new ownership. The pub near the Embarcadero still has the same menu (including the legendary burger), with the additions of grandma-style pies and weekend brunch. We checked out Grumpy's and added it to the Hit List." - julia chen 1
"Since the ’80s, you went to Grumpy’s near the Embarcadero for two reasons: to eat an incredible burger and to rub shoulders with newscasters from the nearby local tv stations. And thankfully, even after changing hands in 2025 after a five-year closure, Grumpy’s and their legendary double-pattied burger still stand (and news crews still stop by, too). While the burger is required for any Grumpy’s visit, the rest of the updated menu of salads and grandma pizzas isn’t quite as strong, but still solid. The dining room has also been refreshed and channels a modern saloon with exposed brick, dark wood, and mid-century chandeliers topped with lampshades. One of the few spots in the area open until 9pm, Grumpy’s is far from a late-night spot, but after 5pm, you’ll likely encounter a full (and very loud) dining room that is worth braving, if just to try the burger at least once. Food Rundown photo credit: Patrick Wong Grumpy’s Burger The best thing here. Everything has just the right amount of char, from the two thick patties to the caramelized onions to the buns. We also appreciate the melted ropey cheese that seems to pull you back in after every bite. photo credit: Patrick Wong Caesar Salad A step up from one you could get from a national salad chain. Just like the burger, there’s a ton of cheese, but the dressing is watery. If you insist on ordering, we suggest adding a protein. photo credit: Patrick Wong Pepperoni Grandma Pizza Just fine. The burger is a much better option, but in a neighborhood bereft of pies, this will do in a pinch." - Patrick Wong
"A favorite bar for local journalists and downtown workers, reborn under new ownership after closing in December 2020 due to the pandemic. The ambiance remains nostalgic with sports on huge TVs, and the menu includes their famous burger and new Grandma-style square pie pizzas." - Paolo Bicchieri
"A reopened bar and restaurant near the Embarcadero known for burgers and square pizzas." - Paolo Bicchieri
