The 38 Best Restaurants in Milwaukee, Wisconsin | Eater

"Harkening back to the time when Walker’s Point was largely comprised of Latine families, this restaurant wears its years and peeling paint with pride. Expect homestyle friendliness, classic Mexican cooking, and a whole lot of spice when you dine in, including steaming bowls of menudo and pozole are hearty, fiery antidotes to your hangover or cold, respectively. The mole and birria simmer all day to produce vivid, earthy flavors. Of special note is the bistec en chile de arbol: tender, scraggly scraps of steak in a scorching silken mahogany sauce, which makes for a dangerous DIY taco mix. Know before you go: Arbol salsa is available upon request to pro-level spice seekers." - Todd Lazarski

The 22 Best Restaurants In Milwaukee 2024

"This all-day, South Side Mexican restaurant only has a dozen or so tables, but they’re usually available, and you should seek them out for one of the city’s best casual lunches. The $15.99 combination special offers one taco, one tostada, and one beef enchilada. We also love their chimichanga, since the tortilla is always fried just right with a crispy crunch. Friendly, hard-working staff and owners keep this place humming, bantering with regulars from behind the bar. There are only two dessert options—churros from Mr. Churro and flan—and both are worth getting even if you’re stuffed (which you probably will be)." - kristine hansen

A small restaurant with a homey laid back atmosphere. Service was incredible! The staff was very friendly and attentive to us. The food was absolutely delicious. The shrimp fajitas were very flavorful with an abundance of vegetables. The flavor of the arbol sauce was so good I would order it 1000x. They also had conchas which we took one to go and was so soft and fresh.

I’ve lived in Milwaukee most of my life but I had never been to Guadalajara before even though they’ve been around since 1987. The building is very unassuming, being on old home turned restaurant. There’s not a lot of seating and we had to wait when we arrived, but it was short, maybe 5 minutes. The service was EXCELLENT and our server was VERY pleasant, accommodating and always smiling. The menu has all your typical a Mexican dishes and they brought chips and salsa to the table. There was a green salsa that was the spicier of the two, but not hot. The red was a little chunky which I don’t prefer but the flavors were good. I ordered the combination plate which came with chunk beef, tortillas and I ordered chicken for the taco, enchilada and tostada. It also came with rice and beans. The food was fresh and delicious. I liked everything and cleaned my plate. Also had a margarita on the rocks. It was fine but not awesome. I’ll definitely be going back when in the mood for Mexican.

Google
This place is great! I had the chimichanga lunch, and my husband had the steak tacos. The salsa Verde is spicy, and I would put it on everything! The staff is very kind. We enjoyed ourselves here and will come back again when we are in Milwaukee!

Google
We were greeted warmly and sat as soon as we arrived! Lovely waitress and fantastic service. I am confident this place serves the best chile relleno in MKE, and I was in love with the salsa verde. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and spent the subsequent three hours flat on our backs in a food coma! The sign of a truly fantastic place!

Great food, great atmosphere. The waitress was so friendly and made us feel at home. Delicious authentic Mexican food. Best Mexican restaurant in Milwaukee. Don’t pass this place up

Google
This Mexican restaurant is like home cooking. Didnt taste like the "traditional" Mexican place you go to eat. I went for my birthday and got a margarita. Super strong. Thank you!

So happy I finally got to try this. Got the combo platter and ALL of it was delicious, everything was on point.

Yelp
I've dined here a few times over the years, and the food has always been excellent! There aren't many places that serve true birria (using goat meat), but this place is one of them, and they do it well. Most recently, I brought my sister and a friend's daughter in for lunch. I've been wanting to try the Mole Poblano I've heard so much about, and it delivered with an incredible rich flavor! The mole is served over chicken with sides of rice, refried beans, and choice of corn or flour tortillas. I enjoyed every bite! It's clear that word is out on how great this place is because it was the first time I've ever walked into a Mexican restaurant and had to wait for a table. They were busy, and they had carry-out orders on top of a full dining room! A couple in town for the NCAA tournament learned about them and went in for lunch, too. It's a small place putting up big, authentic flavors and great service, so get check it out!

Yelp
Ambiance is very comfortable. Food is excellent everyone should try the soup. Service welcoming and knowledgeable on drinks and food recommendations Great time!

Yelp
One of my favorite Mexican restaurants in the city. Although the space is tiny and cozy, they definitely make it super inviting and welcoming. They do a really good mix of various traditional soups and stews - one of my favorite plates to start off with is the coctel de camaron as an app. They also have really tasty horchata and jamiaca. Their michelada is solid and they have a variety of beers to mix it with. When I come here, I feel like it's one of my own aunts or family members are the folks who are serving up the great food that I'm getting ready to enjoy. It's always a pleasure to be greeted and although there might be a slight wait time, it's always worth it.

Yelp
The food is amazing! The menudo is a must try. The staff is amazing and friendly. If you're lucky you might just get a random appearance from a small mariachi band like we did. Definitely a return in the near future.

Yelp
Milwaukee's #1 spot for authentic Mexican food! Delicious food and amazing service! Love the gorditas de chicharron. Also, try their Micheladas and don't forget to have a flan! So good. Feels like you are at home when dining in. Such a friendly environment.

Yelp
Local family owned restaurant set within a neighborhood. Authentic. The pozole was phenomenal and has me still thinking about it.

Yelp
Fantastic food and service. Parking can be a challenge and you may have to wait for a table but it's well worth it. Start with the beans & queso- yum. We like to order ala carte so we can try several things and not miss out. Love that they offer multiple soups daily including two different types of pozole (chicken verde and pork rojo)--take some to go! We always do.

Yelp
First time visiting. Birria De Chivo - Amazing great taste , Large serving size. Enchiladas Suiza were great also . Local gem a must for local Mexican food .

Yelp
hey now! This place was awesome! It's not fancy or ambient, but a true Mexican joint with lots of Spanish being spoken, Mexican music playing, and GREAT Mexican food. Not all the servers speak English well, so it's good to be very clear when. you are putting your order in. We had a little problem with the number of tacos being different from what we had ordered. Chimichanga - pretty much a fried burrito. DE-licious. We had the al pastor meat for this. Burrito - the menu shows the picture of a very small burrito, so we thought we were getting like a Taco Bell burrito... but it was surprisingly bigger and fatter than what they had pictured. It was quite good and very filling. Tacos - the "steak" is more like ground beef, that is just seasoned with salt and pepper. Their "ground beef" is the same cut of meat, but seasoned in a heavier, spicier sauce. Al Pastor was classic delicious. They do tend to sear their meat. This is great for bigger chunks of meat, like al pastor, but the the "steak" it made it somewhat dry. Next time, I'll stick with al pastor for the tacos. And a chicmichanga. It's been a few days and looking at the pictures, I'm salivating and craving some more. No wonder the place was pretty much packed at 2pm on a weekday.

Yelp
I decided to treat my husband to take out from our favorite Mexican restaurant in Guadalajara. Once again, they did not disappoint. The food was fresh and hot. Extremely flavorful as always! They always treat us like family when we dine there or takeout. The service was amazing. Extremely friendly as always.

Sabrina H.

Yelp
Great customer service. Tried the Menudo here because my Dad was visiting from Chicago and was craving it since he tried it in Las Vegas. He loved it! I had got him some in Chicago before but it was too spicy. He said this really hit the spot!

Steven C.

Yelp
Best burrito ever. Great service. Waitress speaks English. Try it and you'll love it.

Yelp
My favorite Mexican spot in WI. So flavorful!!! Food comes out fast and hot. Must try!

Yelp
I forgot to take a picture of my food! :( so sad as it was so good. This place is a super cute and local restaurant with very friendly staff. Super polite and helpful. I got a combo platter for dinner which provided a variety of food for me to have. All tasted wonderful. The margs were a bit off to me which maybe it was just a one time thing?
google avatar

Nava L.

Yelp
This place is amazing! My husband and I went about 40 minutes before they closed and they were so nice and didn't act as if they were annoyed or trying to rush us out of the door. My husband got a marg and loved it plus said it was nice and strong. I got a taco and a few other things (see picture) but don't remember what all of them were. The steak was good quality. Al pastor was also great. They were also attentive before and after our food came. Will definitely go back and would absolutely recommend!

Yelp
I've always brought company here and everyone simply loves this family run place. Good food, relaxed atmosphere, and friendly staff. Great for to-go too, including their breakfasts options.

Yelp
Looked for authentic Mexican restaurants in Milwaukee since I haven't been here since I was 15. Googled and found this place - great place to have some real Mexican food w a nice cold Michelada. It's 5 o'clock somewhere. We liked the look and ambiance here. Cute decorations - great service & definitely nice drinks! We had different choices to try more than one plate plus we had an appetizer. Queso fundido w homemade flour tortilla was the way to go - it also came w beans on the side. We devoured that in minutes. Then our meals you can see in photos - please go try this place out. The only downfall due to limited staff - they didn't have menudo or pozole or tacos de lengua to try. But that did not stop us from stringing and ordering other menu items. Please try this place they have a great variety of foods for your group. Also nice touch was an outside dining area. One small downfall was the parking area next to building fits only a couple cars do you probably have to park like a few doors down. Overall amazing experience - 10+stars Oh did I mention they helped me pack my leftovers so I can donate to the homeless. I hate to throw away my leftovers when we have too many hungry people in this world!

Yelp
Muy rico el menudo! The menudo soup was delicious. I got mines to go. I have gotten other food there such as asada tacos and it was good. The servers are nice and friendly. They are very welcoming and attentive.

Emily M.

Yelp
Salsas are very tasty. Really friendly service. Generous portions of delicious food !

Yelp
First timer over the weekend. My friend had the red and green enchiladas combined (cheese and onion), and I had the beef steak ranchera pictured. Both were flavorful and very good! Chips were fresh, good salsa and did a 1/2 order of guac. I had to add salt to the guac and that helped it add flavor. I had a couple margaritas and she had micheladas. Both goodz Service was great and friendly. I would definitely go back again to try something different!

Jane K.

Yelp
The food is outstanding, with the menudo being a must-try. The staff is both amazing and friendly. If you're lucky, you might even catch a surprise performance from a charming mariachi band, as we did. I'll definitely be returning soon!
google avatar

Audrey G.

Yelp
Best Mexican food we've had. Visiting from Florida where there's a LOT of Mexican food, but nothing beats this place. Super friendly attentive staff. Very accommodating. Drinks came in a couple minutes, app of guacamole a couple minutes after. Then we ordered entrees and they came in less than 10 minutes and everyone loved everything we ordered. Hands down the favorite was the chimichangas. We got one beef one chicken and both were amazing. Crispy without being hard, juicy and flavorful. The chicken is a mix of white and dark meat so they use the whole animal which I find important and also helps so much with flavor. 10/10 must try if you visit Milwaukee. P.S. The margaritas are of course amazing, but the piña coladas we could drink All Day.

Bobb S.

Yelp
I feel terrible that I have passed Guadalajara dozen of times without stopping in as I have definitely missed out. This will be a short review. You would be a fool not to order the red (pork) or green (chicken) posole. I was fortunate to try both on a Saturday night and left a happy customer. A heaping bowl of goodness accompanied by a plate of sliced radishes, cabbage, and fried tortilla to add as you like. I absolutely loved the broth on both soups. Located on the first floor of a home, the space itself is not that large with approximately 10 tables. Service was excellent and my waitress was warm and friendly. I know now never to pass this place again without stopping in. One of my new faves.
google avatar

Megan L.

Yelp
What a great little place! My closest friends Rohan and Maria took me to this spot and what a little gem it is! Obviously a hit with the locals, you know a place is truly authentic when the locals are there. Service is absolutely amazing and friendly! The margarita that I ordered was awesome! I ordered the steak fajitas and it was absolutely delicious. I will definitely be returning to this little place. If you love Mexican food and want a amazing authentic experience, you must try it out!! Support your local mom and pop places! There's a reason they're still around!!
google avatar

J M.

Yelp
I always love to come here when we are in town. Customer service is great ! Delicious food and many dishes to pick from . The atmosphere is good and you can have a good conversation with nice background music . You must have a michelada if you have a hangover , these are the bomb !
google avatar

Maggie B.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from Guadalajara and I was blown away by how good it is! We got the Chile Relleno, Camarones al Mojo de Ajo, and Enchiladas Poblanas. My favorite was probably the camarones but you really can't go wrong with any of them. All came with rice and beans and all were delicious!
google avatar

Karmen B.

Yelp
Small little (seemingly family owned) Mexican restaurant we found on Yelp. Had great reviews so why not try it. It seems cheese dip/ queso is not a normal appetizer here in Milwaukee (first time visitor) so was a little bummed but I mean when in rome right. I ordered 2 cheese enchilada and 1 chicken. I think would have gotten 4 stars from me if they were as greasy. You could see the grease on top of the cheese. Had guacamole for an appetizer and I would say that was the best part of the meal along with the rice and beans. Tortilla chips were average. My boyfriend got 2 beef and cheese tacos and he seemed to love them more than I loved my enchiladas.
google avatar

Jay H.

Yelp
Great Service. Chilaquiles was really good. Had a great mexican vibe as well. Will recommend and return
google avatar

Gary B.

Yelp
Incredible authentic Mexican food in Milwaukee. Would go again in a heartbeat. Mucho gracias.

Pamela M.

Yelp
I just kinda love it. Why? Pozole errday!!!! This is a Mexican soup with hominy (it's like giant corn) and pork. Raw sides come out that you can add to your pozole: cabbage, limes (call them lemons when at authentic Mexican restaurants, that's what they call them) and onion. They also bring tostadas to eat with the soup, its traditionally served that way. The meat you may have to pick at a little bit, it's traditionally served with some of the fat or skin of the meat - it's just a thing. I don't mind picking around it, though. They have the red (more common) pozole with pork and also the green with chicken. Pozole is just wonderful, homemade, delicious, traditional Mexican soup. I crave it most in Sundays. If you are hanging, swing by for pozole and a margarita to spruce you right up! The staff is so sweet! Checked in me multiple times, multiple people. I'm new to sopes and tried one ala carte with ground beef. It was excellente! Muy bueno! I also love that it's such a neighborhood joint. It's more like coming to a family member's house and eating in their kitchen. What is not to like about that?! Some things in the menu I don't recommend, the nachos I did not love and some friends didn't like the lack of meat in the fajitas. Again, this is my pozole place.

Pamelja F.

Yelp
This is hands down the most authentic, freshest, and best Mexican restaurant in milwaukee. It's small and intimate, kind of like eating in your favorite aunt's kitchen. Everyone who works there is family, and they make you feel like family, too. Everything is completely homemade. And you haven't lived until you've had one of their hibiscus margaritas. It's not sweet...just a hint fruity and so refreshing. Be sure to visit their website for hours...due to staffing shortages everywhere, they have been closing early. My husband threw a private party for my birthday, for 18 people, at Guadalajara! We had pre-ordered a lot of different dishes that were served family-style. People were raving about the food all night!
google avatar

Corey M.

Yelp
Very quaint joint. It's small, it has charm, tías and abuelas take care of you. The food is authentic. Respect your servers, tip your servers and show gratitude bc that's the bare minimum this place deserves. I'd recommend something but Guadalajara does not miss. That said, personal favorite is anything with Al Pastor and chunky beef.
google avatar

Ashley E.

Yelp
Best authentic Mexican food in Milwaukee. Hands down! I always make sure to get to go food anytime I come to Milwaukee as we no longer live close. The whole staff is always so sweet and kind. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu!
google avatar

Yelp
Real authentic stuff. The kind of place I can bring my Mexican in laws to and my American family and everyone leaves really happy.

Hank M.

Yelp
Lovely spot - Nancy was great - the employees seem to enjoy working there - the mole sauce was really good but the chicken it was served with seemed cooked with out any seasonings or spices - maybe boiled ? Kind of bland margarita and was weak perhaps to much ice?
google avatar

Marc R.

Yelp
Great traditional Mexican breakfasts for about $6 make this place a keeper in my book. The lunch options are also quite reasonably priced and prepared by the family staff who work here. The lunch plates, and other options are also well prepared standard Mexican fare. For the price and the value this place is a stand out. They have a very small parking lot where I would only park a subcompact car. I have seen people with big trucks and SUVs struggle to get in and out of the lot. So, if you have a Honda Civic yes park here, but if you have a giant SUV park on the street. This place has been a neighborhood bar or restaurant in one way or another for over 100 years and as the Guadalajara for most of my life. I lived just down the street on Walker Square park (and my family still does) and went here for breakfast occasionally with friends and recently started going here with family when I am in town. There is nothing fancy or hipster or Rick Baseless about this place, but two people can have Mexican breakfast or lunch for under $10 each and even if you get the bigger plates you will probably spend less than $15 each. A great choice for a family run Mexican place that is affordable. Go here!

Yelp
I wanted to try this place and I was not disappointed. It looks divvy and it is. The building looks like a house on top and the restaurant on first floor. Its right in the middle of a residential are and looks out of place. Don't let the looks fool you. The place is small with booths and tables. There is a lot of dark wood with light walls. There is a bar area so I would have a cocktail today. People were waiting to get in because it was full at 11:30 and I got the last table. Service was great from the start and I was quickly seated and given a menu. I will post pictures of the menu since I could not find an on line one. I started with a lime margarita which is my first one in life and I liked it but nothing to compare it to. It was refreshing with a good lime flavor. I new I would get the lucky # 13 after looking at it, come on you have to try the combination plate if you have not been here before. This is something I would not order because I'm a taco/burrito guy but not today. You get a hard beef taco, tostada, enchilada, chunky beef with sauce, rice, beans and corn tortillas. See the pictures. I forgot how good hard shell ground beef tacos are. The enchilada was cheese and onion. The chunky beef with beans and rice in the corn tortilla was good. The beans were good along with the rice. The tostada looked good and I'm sure it's just as good as everything else but I didn't get to it yet, it's a big plate of food for me and I had a box to go. This was a great way to sample the menu and I'm glad I did something different. Over all this Was a great place and my food was very good, my cocktail was good and the service was great so what more could you ask for. Like I have always practiced you have to get out of your neighborhood and into others. Two thumbs up.

Yelp
59 minutes ago Be VERY cautious when ordering food here. We were grossly overcharged. I called and spoke to the Manager and he told someone else that I was complaining about a$5.00 overcharge. Its more like a $10+ unexplained charge. We ordered 1#13 without the tostada and asked to supplement w/ a chimichanga ( were told yes) , 6 tacos,a side order of rice and beans .Per thier menu it should cost $11.95, for the # 13, $12 for the tacos $3 for the side of rice and beans , with the extra ( unexpected)charge of the chimichanga $2 50..and Guacamole extra per thier menu $2.00 totaling about $31.45 We were charged $46 and some change and WEREN'T given a receipt. Per thier manager the menus online are OLD and it should have come up to about $36 . I asked what can you do about the overcharge he said nothing, made the comment about my complaining, had no explanation why we were charged more, and said next time ask for a receipt. Totally unacceptable, we try to buy local but its hard to support small businesses if they are OPENLY ROBBING YOU. Food is not great & service horrible . See the pictures to judge for yourselves. Final note : some how they had my whole name on the order ticket which I did not give them...???
google avatar

Diane L.

Yelp
I agree with many of the others comments. Authentic and the real deal. Little hole in the wall but great Mexican food. I usually don't eat pozole but I had to try it because of all the reviews. I had the verde pozole with chicken and it was great. My sister said it was the best enchiladas she has ever had. Great service and friendly staff. Will definitely go back.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
This is the real deal folks. The sopa pollo verde is the staple that all come for. (Get the large portion and take some home). The pastor, steak, any meat really is top notch. Enjoy being in your Mexican grandmas kitchen and be grateful you discovered this 'as authentic and welcoming' as it gets gem.

Doris L.

Yelp
Everyone raves about this place and they have all the trappings of what might be called 'authentic.' I didn't think it was that great. I had menudo and my partner had the goat birria. Both on the watery side and neither looked appetizing when they came out. The waitstaff person was okay, I guess, but seemed overwhelmed and kept confusing what each of us ordered. Dishes that landed on our table appeared unkempt and unappetizing. We waited fifteen minutes before the waters arrived. (This mattered because, actually, we were thirsty, though we didn't want to be rude and flag down our waitperson.) The nachos filled about half the basket, looking uneven, as if they brought us another's who didn't finish theirs. A little disappointing this place, but everyone else on yelp seems crazy about it. I can see why - the trappings - but my experience was not affirming. I've had good 'authentic" Mexican restaurant experiences and this wasn't it for me.
google avatar

McKenna S.

Yelp
I did take out due to COVID and they were friendly on the phone, timely with take out and even delivered to my car. I also enjoyed their Pazole since the meat was savory but without the cartilage. I would do take out for the Pazole again. Thanks!
google avatar

C. S.

Yelp
One favorite Mexican restaurants to eat at. The two different pazole they have are awesomely good and my most favorite dish to get there. The tostadas I can eat twice on Sundays! So good and big portions. Friendly staff and they package your food very well.
google avatar

Maricela C.

Yelp
I don't know where to begin to talk about this restaurant. First of all it's been here many many years. The owners the wait staff the cooks oh my gosh. PHENOMENAL PHENOMENAL PHENOMENAL. I seem to always pick the days that they're closed. They have the best lengua, steak, pork, chicken ETC.. tacos. THAT I MISS EVERY TIME I DON'T GET A CHANCE TO STOP BY. If you want remembrance from your your mom your grandma your old Uncle cooking in the kitchen come on now this is the place to go. She might not have a lot of space this place not might not be Rockstar big but it is the food that tastes the bomb and it's like one of the South Side Milwaukee's Best kept secrets and it sucks because they need more praise. I'm making it a point to go there every weekend hopefully I can't wait for this covid to be over because me and the family we love coming in a bunch don't stop what you're doing you guys are great to say no sham this is the real deal these people can throw down.

Yelp
Tasty, affordable, authentic food. As a frequent Mexican food-goer, this place definitely exceeded my expectations!

Yelp
The food and service were excellent. The place is very clean. Great birria and pozole and they serve them everyday.

Megan G.

Yelp
Hole in the wall Mexican restaurant with fast service and friendly staff. I enjoyed my Michelada I had as well as the rice and beans that came with my entree. My flautas however were very bland and dry. I would consider returning here, but I wish I had read other reviews to have had a better sense of what to order.
