"Kind of a misnomer, fried carrot cake is made with radish and not a dessert. It comes in two varieties – black and white. The black one has a caramel-like sweetness while the white one is eggy and salty. Order a mix of both." - Michelin Inspector

This is one of the much reviewed stall at this food centre. I recall eating this quite sometime ago, and this time round it did not feel as good. The prices has also gone up quite a bit and now it is minimum of $4. I decided to have both white and black carrot cake for $6. The black carrot cake is better with sweetness. In contrast, the white carrot cake is rather tasteless and simply just black carrot cake without the sweet sauce. I expected it to be different and has a character on its own.

Carrot Cake / Chye Tow Kueh (SGD $3) @ Guan Kee Fried Carrot Cake. . I first chanced upon this stall, and their overly generous huge portions, back when I used to work nearby. . They serve an above average rendition, with a soft easy texture that the elderly folks around here like. Nice smoky edges to their handmade carrot cake, with a good mix of eggs within. . Seasoned with fish sauce and sesame oil, each plate is smoky savoury eggy sweet in taste, while being slightly greasy. . The black version fares better with a distinct lacing of the sweet dark soy sauce, while the white version has more pronounced smoky eggy notes.

Very delicious! On the pricer side to be $7 for mixed black and white carrot cake. I find there is not enough eggs. But the radish is chewy and topped with those small savoury bits! Yum.

Like what most people reviewed, the $3 portion is indeed very generous! While the taste is not exceptionally mind blowing, is definitely a good plate of carrot cake with very generous portion of eggs, which I also love. Not too sure if there’s a difference between the morning and afternoon uncle, but I had the one after 4pm. Don’t be overly enthusiastic either as they do not open on time. Today they started only at 4.10pm. Overall, a good plate of carrot cake!

Came here for breakfast and chanced upon the carrot cake shop. Tried the black+white combination. It tastes good. The white one is well fried and crispy. The black one well blended with the sweet sauce.

I tried the black carrot cake. Hot from the pan, it was not overly sweet. Just nice with crispy bits of wok hey. Super nice! I finished this despite having had breakfast just now. Will come back next time to try the white one. Oh and the seller was nice and cheery. A nice start to the day!

This stall we quite popular and open early morning. They serve quite a big portion of traditional fried carrot cake. Polite uncle cook, unfortunately he didn't add in spring onions, which is a must have for fried carrots cake. When I ask the uncle, he told me spring onions ingredients only come in later morning for lunch crowds. So next time, I would not order this before lunch time. 😊 Overall, taste are good. Recommended if you craving for fried carrot cake, and don't mind without spring onions during morning hours.

Personally, I like the white style of Fried Carrot Cake, it's full of Wok Hey and radish is fresh. Black Carrot cake however is too sweet to my liking.

Yelp
I sadly thought they had closed when I came back post-pandemic in 2022 but am so glad to report that Guan Kee is back! The son might have taken over the cooking but I still appreciate this plate of carrot cake. Not the typical crispy squared cakes I like but even despite the tiny chopped bits, you get great charred crispy flavor and texture that makes this a satisfying plate. Oh and always white version of course. Welcome back! You were missed.

Yelp
The black carrot cake here has a very good and well balanced flavor. While they don't make their own carrot cake like fu ming does, it taste way better flavor wise. The size of the carrot cake itself is cut too small but I'll overlook that in light of the flavors.

Yelp
The thing that impress me a lot in this black version, is the way he does the swaying and mixing of the eggs into the black carrot cake. Which is mixed almost perfectly, the carrot cake had some nice crispy edge to the bite. And you could taste the fried egg and chai po in almost every bite. Which was done in a way that differs from any other stall I have visited. Prices from $2.50. The white version is quite okay if you like it stir fried all together. I prefer the white version which is done crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. Price from $2.00. You can really taste the garlic and eggs in every mouth. If you do not mind the fact that their carrot cake is from the factory (and they do not try to hide it too), it would be a good choice to try this stall. This is my current favourite carrot cake stall.

Yelp
$2.50 for the most fabulously awesome delicious black carrot cake ever!! SUCH a huge portion, especially for that amount. I told myself I should not finish it. Alas, to no avail. I gobbled down every single last crumb of carrot cake/egg/chai poh there was. I've had lackadaisical ones far too often, so this was heaven on earth. Good sweet soy sauce to carrot cake size ratio, generous amount of egg (sweet egg! Yum!!), nice crisp bits, steaming hot from the wok, chilli, everything was great! There were a few chunks of carrot cake that were a little big, but who's complaining.. Need some bigger pieces to offset the sweetness of the soy sauce, anyhow. I would have this way more often, just that I fear for my health given the great alacrity with which I devoured the entire plate. Go across to Bugis Village to grab $1 fruit juice after!

Yelp
Thumbs up ! Came here for lunch on Thursday (12om) and to my surprise, there wasn't a line. I got myself a plate of white carrot cake ($2). Portion is just right for one person. Like other yelpers have mentioned, there are some crispy bits and I love love love the generous amount of egg. If there is a line, it can be a long wait because the uncle is running a one-man show. The only complaint I have is that he serves the food on a plastic plate with plastic fork. Not very environmentally friendly. I am a happy camper today, yummmmmmm. I would definitely recommend it to YOU!

Yelp
I was told carrot cake is a delicious local dish that I must try in Singapore so I did. A few times in fact. Meh, totally didn't get the hype...until I tried it at this location! I get it now! For the locals, "carrot" seems to refer to radish or daikon and not the orange carrot I would normally think of. This version was super tasty and I did try both the black and white version at this place as well as previously at other locaitons so had good comparison. This one definitely has the perfect ratio of carrot cake, egg and preserved vegetables. No idea what type of seasoning goes into it but the texture was perfect. Love that it's not too broken up so that there's still decent sized chunks of egg to pick at. Black version is a bit sweeter so my personal preference is the slightly more savoury white one. However, every time I've been here the queue is almost 30 minutes so by the time I get to order, I often just get one of each...heck for $2.50, why not?

Yelp
Um...what did I just eat? Saw the reviews and saw the line in front of this food stall. So yeah...I just waited 30 minutes to eat this Black Carrot Cake thing that doesn't taste like Black and doesn't taste like Carrot Cake. Um...what am I missing here?
