Yelp
In the next chapter of my nomadic travels, work life brought me to yet another pocket of SF I've yet to explore - Mission/Potrero Hill! You know, as annoying as it has been to move around so much, it's been just as awesome getting to discover so many new places! Definitely can't argue with having a constant string of new spots to Yelp about, even though that also means my list of reviews to write is even less likely to get any shorter. Oh well...life of a Yelper!
Despite how I've reviewed a handful in the past, writing about supermarkets isn't exactly sexy. However, Gus's isn't like just any neighborhood market. While I may not have expected/feared anything bad, it was a pleasant surprised to see how clean and modern this place is! What's more, their array of offerings is pretty legit. Beyond all of the typical staples, they have a terrific selection of local and organic produce, meats, and seafood. Prices are a little higher than the likes of Safeway or Lucky's, but it's still a bit cheaper than Whole Foods.
Admittedly though, as great as the market side of Gus's may be, I can't say I've done much grocery shopping here. Rather, every time I've been, it's been to pick up lunch (which probably goes for the vast majority people who come here as well). Made to order sandwiches, DIY salad bar, hot foods, sushi, poke bowls...plenty of options to choose from! There's a small coffee bar as well, in case you're looking for something a bit more...caffeinated.

Overall, this was fine and did the trick for my pastrami craving, but I probably should've created my own pastrami sandwich. The meat was slightly peppery, moist, and nicely complemented by the Swiss and dressing. The bread was decent as well, but I had my fill of sauerkraut less than halfway through.

I thought the meat would be soaked in au jus, but I was so glad to see it on the side! That, as well as how tender and well seasoned the beef. Topped with the melted provolone? Yum. The bread was a little dry on its own, but dipping it into that cup of tasty au jus sure did help!

Of the sandwiches I tried, this was by far my favorite (and most appealing on their board). Not only was the sandwich pretty large for the money, but it was just really tasty overall. The French roll was soft and crusty, the salami and turkey complemented each other really well, and all of the toppings/veggies were really fresh.
Along with the sandwiches (double stamps on Tuesdays!), I've also tried some of the sushi offerings (Rainbow Roll, California Roll) and they're not bad at all. The fish was fresh (which is about all you can ask for), the rice was decently cooked, and the portion/price was rather fair. Clearly, it's not as good as what can get at an actual sushi restaurant, but as far as supermarket sushi goes? Not too shabby.
Food aside, Gus's also gets major plus points for the uber friendly staff; whether they're behind the counter or working in the aisles, everyone seems so genuinely nice! Too bad they're so far out of the way from where I live to do my normal sort of grocery shopping. To pick up something fresh and quick for lunch though? Oh I'll definitely be back for that!
