I finally got to try Gus's on Sunday night for dinner, and it was divine! My husband had tried the Gus's in Mid-City many years ago, so I had heard good things about it.
The restaurant was half full that evening around 5PM, so we got to choose our own table and waited for someone to come take our order. The decor is quite cozy, and the chairs were comfy. Mathieu was our star server for the night and was very attentive and pleasant. My husband and I ordered the fried green tomatoes, 3 piece dark meat plate (swapped out the slaw for greens) + an extra leg, and a slice of chess pie. The food came out in rounds on compostable/paper plates--the fried green tomatoes first, then the chicken took some time to fry up (it takes time to fry chicken well), and the chess pie last after we finished our chicken (we requested dessert come later instead of with the chicken)--very fresh and piping hot.
It was my husband's first time trying fried green tomatoes, and he thought they were outstanding. The cornmeal batter was delectably crispy, while the tomatoes inside were a soft explosion of juice inside. It paired really well with the ranch that it came with.
The fried chicken was well-seasoned (it's slightly spicy) and very moist but still crunchy without a super thick coating of batter. I preferred the leg over the thigh because the meat to batter ratio made it a little less salty than the thigh, but both were delicious and well-cooked. The greens and baked beans were solid, and it was nice to have a soft piece of white bread to pair with the chicken.
I have been really interested in trying chess pie, so I was glad they had it at Gus's. We requested our slice to be warmed up, and my husband really loved it. It tasted like an eggy custard pie with a slightly crispy crust on top. The pie crust was good, and I would love to try the chocolate chess pie next time.
Overall, a really solid meal, and we will definitely be back in the future whenever we are craving fried chicken (and pie)!
