Craft Cidery Launches Miramar Tasting Room - Eater San Diego

"Guthrie CiderWorks, which has been making cider locally since 2016, just opened its first tasting room at its Miramar production facility. Run by Horacio and Sara Devoto, who relocated to San Diego from Minneapolis, MN, the small-batch craft cidery is now expanding its offerings beyond its flagship extra dry cider, which has been available in bottles everywhere from Neighborhood in the East Village to Level2 at La Jolla’s George’s at the Cove, and its semi-dry cider, which has been on tap at bars including Hamilton’s Tavern and Common Theory Public House." - Candice Woo

I'm not a huge fan of cider but my buddy prefers it to beer so we went to check it out. The owners were there and they're very nice and friendly and very knowledgeable. We each got the $10 flight which is four glasses that are 5oz each. It was a perfect introduction to the dry ciders. I ended up really liking the different ciders and appreciate that they aren't too sweet like the ones you find in the grocery story. Definitely something different and it's a nice cozy little spot. I'll be back.

Google
The owners are such nice wonderful people and are an absolute pleasure to talk with. My husband and I like their dry cider so much that we ordered a keg for our wedding. The guests absolutely loved it! Everyone was asking where we got it! Their ciders are such a refreshing improvement on the typical overly sweet mass produced cider that I am personally not a fan of. If you like your drinks dry then you will love their cider. And if you are in the mood for something a little sweeter, they have a couple of lovely infused options, too.

This place needs to change their status from "temporary closed" to "by appointment only". I sent a message via their website and was welcomed in for an awesome private tasting! Brian was amazing and set us up with flights of all their big sellers in addition to some secret cherry magic. My buddy and I talked his ear off and had the best time. I left with 8) 4 packs, 4) glasses and a couple openers. I could not help myself, everything was SO DELICIOUS. Top quality cider is rare and this is worth every penny. My first attraction was that I'm a proud Guthrie (maiden name) and us Scots know about drinking. Next time I hope to see more kilts. Absolutely recommend!

Google
Wife and I stopped in, after trying their cider at Viewpoint brewing in Del Mar. Great place to stop in after brunch. Run by a husband and wife team. Super friendly folks. Cider is so good!!! Highly recommend if you're looking for a product that's more dry then sweet. Great alternative to the over sweet big box brands you find in the store.

Google
I'm not one for cider usually, but this place we stopped in after work and I was pleasantly surprised. These ciders are not too sweet, very tasty and have a little bit of a punch at over 7%. Definitely a good place to grab a drink on a hot day, so any day in SD. Walk on in and the two owners are very friendly and nice. Will be coming back!!

Google
Small no frills tasting room in the same space used for making their cider. Tasted all 6 of their ciders and really liked their fruitier blends. They are known for drier ciders. Just personal preference. Something for everyone. No food. Friendly informative staff person.

Google
Guthrie CiderWorks is an amazing place! Not only are the ciders ridiculously delicious, but the space and environment is so welcoming, hip, and warm. They have 7 ciders on tap, which can be purchased in glasses, flights, or smaller tasters. (The Rubus Citrus was my FAVORITE). My wife and I hosted a joint graduation celebration there and it turned out so so well. The space can be rented out for parties, events, get-togethers, you name it. It comfortably fits 50+ people, and there are two separate rooms with ample space. Sara is so sweet, professional, and accommodating. In the front room, there are tables provided with games like Jenga, card games, etc. We went ahead and brought our own cornhole game! The main tasting room was also so rad! The lighting, decor, and theming just added to the eclectic warehouse atmosphere of the venue. We were allowed to display a slideshow DVD that was projected on a massive wall, as well as play our own music. A good portion of our guests, as soon as they entered, asked "Where'd you find this place? It's so cool!" There is ample parking also, which is a major plus. I would highly recommend this place to ANYONE and EVERYONE, whether they just want to try cider, or host an event. Thank you Guthrie CiderWorks for an AMAZING and UNFORGETTABLE evening!

Google
Super cool tasting room! Their production area is in the same space as the tasting room so it feels very intimate. The owners are super nice and the cider is outstanding. Highly recommemded!

Yelp
They have 7 ciders on tap in a range of styles. What sets them apart from most other cider makers, is that all of their offerings are dry. If you've got a major sweet tooth, that may be disappointing but I find most ciders too sweet to have more than one of so Guthrie's recipes are a welcomed change. I tried every flavor and although there wasn't any I didn't like, my favs were the coffee cider and the mango. Give them a shot, good stuff.

Yelp
Tucked away behind a few warehouses, it was a little hard to find this place since it's so small, but if you see the TESLA building, you know you're in the right place! Cider here blew me away! I loved everything I tried on my flight of 4: Maloose, Rubus Citrus, Truly Dry, and Fruit Gold. This flight had a good range of flavors -- sweet, dry, tart, and even a bit floral. The truly dry had the perfect amount of dryness to it and it was one of my favorites. The Rubus Citrus had flavors of raspberry and grapefruit (I believe, one of the owners told us they recently changed the recipe from Oranges to grapefruit) and it was perfectly tart. It's a small tasting room, but it very homey, and felt like the perfect place to relax after work. FYI, they have Battleship. Come with your A-Game.

Yelp
LOVE the ciders at Guthrie. We've visited a handful of times and end up buying a case most visits! The owners are fantastic and they make you feel at home. The ciders are low sugar and one of them even has 1 gram! If you're new to Guthrie, get a flight of 4 for $10 to figure out what you like. You can't go wrong with anything you pick.

Yelp
TLDR: 5/5 All-Around: The Guthrie team receive my highest "cider" recommendation. Value: Average prices - $7 average per drink. Friendly: The entire staff is a delight to be around. They were very accommodating and gave great recommendations. Professional: You can tell the team at Guthrie knows what they are doing. We had a conversation about what made the cider special that was very enlightening. Accessibility: Lots of parking and easy to reach. 15 minutes from UTC La Jolla. **No food is served here outside of chips. Recommendations: The Fruit Gold was our teams favorite!

Yelp
Booked this place for our gender reveal and although it was a smaller place than expected, everyone still had a good time & enjoyed the party! I spoke with Sara about the event and she was so kind and understanding about everything. She was patient with payment & even let us stay past our allotted time to clean up. If you're Filipino you'd know how everyone likes to stand around for a bit even though the party is over! Lol Sara enjoyed our food we provided and she was friendly throughout the event, sold drinks to our guest and even welcomed us back once our baby girl is born so I can enjoy their drinks myself haha. It's really a hole in the wall place and I'll definitely be back! Oh and don't forget they're DOG FRIENDLY !! They loved our dogs and everyone loved seeing them too!!

Yelp
First time trying this place and it was packed with an event. Needless to say it was busy but it gave me time to look over the menu. They also had a older B&W movie playing on the warehouse wall, neat. I decided on the C and C cider (Coconut and caramel) and it was smooth and delicious. Ciders have really started to grow on me as my preferred adult beverage and it looks like I have a few more visits to try the entire menu! Maybe I'll have to set up my own event. Cheers!

Yelp
Magnificent!! The service beyond customer service I always feel as as though I'm a house guest It's beautiful set up!! The lovely woman that always welcomes us is just the icing on he cake to this fine establishment!

Yelp
What am amazing cider place! Got a flight of drinks for a relatively cheap and reasonable price and it was DELICIOUS! The owners were so kind in helping us decide which drinks to try and it was great to actually talk to them about their business. The vibe of the place is super chill as well.

Yelp
Great little new addition in the Miramar's neighborhood of breweries and cideries!

Yelp
I had a Groupon for a tasting for 2 with a souvenir glass. The tasting area is small so not great for a lot of people but perfect for getting a drink with a friend or 2. I'm surprised at how much I liked the cider. I'm more of sweet cider girl so I thought it'd be a little too dry for me but it was actually delicious. I tried the Maloose, Rubis Citrus, Guthrie Bird and Fruit Gold.

Yelp
Cider comes in two main varieties: sweet stuff meant for people who don't like beer and really want a wine spritzer, and real dry cider that is meant for people who like cider. Guthrie is the second type: this is dry cider for people who enjoy cider. It's not pretending to be something else, and it's not trying to imitate any of the local breweries: it's cider. Today they're pouring four ciders: here's my comments: - Rubus Citrus: a raspberry cider with a nice tart finish. Still dry, but this was the sweetest one I had today and I would gladly drink a pint of this anywhere - Maloose: the semi-dry cider is still very dry with a crisp finish. A good apple flavor keeps things going and I could drink this by the gallon. - Truly Dry: I also like this very, very much, but I could possibly prefer the Maloose. Look, try both of them, you won't be disappointed! - Cherry Zinga: WOW. OK, like, I wasn't sure what to expect, but this is between the "Truly Dry" and "Maloose" in terms of dryness, but has a shot of cardamom in there. Cardamom! That spice you have in your cabinet but haven't used in years? Yeah, turns out Guthrie knew EXACTLY what to do with it! This is so good I'm taking a bottle or three home with me! I know that it's not necessarily in the prettiest location, but you really need to visit Guthrie if you like cider. This place is making great product!

Yelp
Excellent industrial casual atmosphere with pleasant earthy background music. Ciders are exceptional in variety, fruit level, composition and balance :) ask for "the kim" not only a beautiful lady, but delicious blend of the cravable truly dry and cherry. If you haven't discovered Guthrie... you are late!

Yelp
Great cider. Not overly sweet. Owners friendly and informative. Highly recommend. We wil be back.

Yelp
The cherry zinga is a must if you like cardamom! Great cider and very nice owners. Location a little tricky to get to but no problem with google maps. I'm told this is the lunch break drink of choice for the Tesla employees next door.

Yelp
Such an amazing place with incredible people! The equipment is like walking into an art gallery and the Cider is the perfect crossover for the wine drinkers looking to try for the first time. Very dry, with superb mouthfeel and excellent complexity! Was there for the grand opening and they had a pop up food vendor cooking and pairing Guthrie's Cider, so definitely keep your eye out for more mouth watering food options in the future as well!

Yelp
If you want to enjoy some real cider that also ya a minimal amount of sugar, you've found your spot. An awesome mom and pop spot, Guthrie offers some of the most delicious ciders I've had. Definitely something I could spend a Sunday sipping on.

Yelp
I bought a groupon online, I am a cider fanatic! This place is located in a industrial secluded area. I did find it with no problem using my Waze navigation. The lady who took my Groupon and cider flight order was super sweet and very attentive to her customers. The cider flight I got included: mango pineapple, rose, robus citrus and the spiced mult. I am usually into super sweet ciders, while these were not sweet at all the flavor was delicious and refreshing. I will say these ciders are on the dryer side and not tart. I will be back when I am back in town

Yelp
This is my favorite cider on the planet! Creative flavors, low sugar, and I've loved every single one I've tried. We recently visited their dog-friendly taproom with our two pups and had a great time. We brought home some cider too, and we savored every last drop. Can't wait to go back!

Vanessa H.

Yelp
Found this little Gem via Groupon, it included tasters for two and take home glasses. We tried all six since we split up our options. Our favorites included the Rubus Citrus and the Cherry. The large take home bottles at $10 each was such a deal. They have board games and the couple that owns it and runs it are very personable and friendly.

Yelp
I really enjoyed visiting this place, it is kind of in a random location, in a warehouse area. I was with my in-laws and they looked very puzzled when we pulled into the parking lot at this location. However, as soon as we walked in, we really enjoyed our whole experience here. First of all the owner is unbelievably nice and so welcoming. She really made our experience that much better. She is someone that I could spend a lot of time talking to in a very easy manner. Now onto the ciders, every single one we had was really good but our personal favorites were the cherry and sangria flavored ciders. Also it is a kid friendly area, they were showing movies up on the big wall and there were lots of games for us to play. I would definitely come back in a heartbeat.

Yelp
All ciders are gluten free. We used a groupon and got two tastings and two souvenir glasses. It was good cider but the hours of the brewery are hard to make.

Yelp
We went with a party of 6 and had great service. The cider was amazing and everyone in our group liked it, which doesn't always happen. They have great flavors that were not sweet, but flavorful. We bought some for home and plan to go back! Plus you can fin them at BevMo!

Yelp
Very good customer service and cider. I would get the flight to try all the different ciders. It's a very cute an intimate place with fantastic cider. My favorite was the brut.

Yelp
Awesome cider place. My hubby and I went and we just love the vibe of the place and the yummy ciders. Usually he doesn't cider but this was perfect because they were not too sweet and had just the right about of crisp dry notes! We are looking forward to coming back and bringing friends!

Kim S.

Yelp
Fantastic place! The ciders are delicious and the tasting room has games and videos playing. The owner is lovely and very welcoming. Got 2 glasses and a 22 oz bottle to go for $24 which is super reasonable! Definitely coming back!

Yelp
My wife likes cider but, so far, she has limited herself to "big brand" bottles. I don't much like that stuff - I could never share a bottle with her. I thought she might enjoy tasting a few different ciders, and I found Guthrie Ciderworks (and its solid 5-star rating) on Yelp. I was pleased to see that they were dog-friendly, too. We've just visited, for the first time. We shared two 4-glass flights (with two "repeats", so we had 6 different ciders), with some of the chips and salsa (Mister G's - awesome) that they have for sale. Definite 5 stars. The husband & wife owners were there, and are really friendly and easy to talk with. The ciders are terrific - not as sweet and cloying as the above-mentioned store-bought brands, but not too dry either (I've had dry ciders that make your mouth pucker - these don't, they are really expertly-brewed). Our rankings of the ciders were Rose - Brut - Mango/Pineapple - Coconut/Caramel - Cherry Zinga - Rubius. We bought some cans & bottles of our top 3 to take home. Unlike the big brand stuff, I'm hoping that my wife will be sharing it with me. We'll definitely be back (and the owner, Sara I think, told us to be sure to bring our dog :-))

Emily G.

Yelp
Delightful cider, delightful hostess. We came in with our baby and a Groupon and they were more than accommodating. We even sprung for a bottle to take home!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here with my husband, children and Parents. All three generations had a great time! My kids watched a movie that was playing while us the grownups enjoyed tasting the cyders. Upon leaving the place we also saw some games (Battle ship and Jenga) that can keep the kids occupied. The owners were incredibly nice! Answered our questions about the cyder production and made sure we will be satisfied with our orders. We will definitely be back again, next time we will bring some food from outside (they mention that as an option on their website). They also offer there chips and salsa. Highly recommend visiting this local charming cyder place.

Yelp
This an amazing spot to enjoy some low sugar ciders and all of them taste delicious. Highly recommend!! They also have an awesome logo if your looking for cool pint glasses

Yelp
I stumbled across this hidden gem today and was so glad that I did. It is tucked in the back of a business park in Miramar and I never would have known it was there. The owners were very kind and down to earth. Their knowledge and passion for their ciders was almost as refreshing as the cider itself. They have a handful of ciders on tap. They told me that the brut is their most popular, but I went for the pineapple, which was absolutely delicious. A bit drier than other ciders I have tried, I was able to appreciate the pineapple taste without it being overwhelming or flooded with obscene amounts of sugar. If you want to try a few different options, they have flights available with 4 smaller glasses on them to try. If you are into ciders, this place is definitely worth a try!

Natalie D.

Yelp
You can't go wrong with any of the flavors! They all are fantastic. Intimate setting, but I feel like that's appreciated in this industry. Owners are extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and are there with a smile! Stop reading - just go check it out now.
google avatar

Danielle L.

Yelp
Hostess is always wonderful. The ciders are more on the dry side so if that's what you like, then it's the perfect place.
google avatar

Allie G.

Yelp
This is a quaint cider place that is has delicious cider. The owners are very nice and friendly. It's an intimate place that feels industrial and causal. My favorite cider is the cherry zinga that has notes of cardamom.

Yelp
We went to Guthrie tonight for cider and trivia and had a great time! The owner was very sweet and informative, and we loved everything we tasted. Each cider had a unique flavor and was distinctive compared to each other. They also had a delicious Mexican food truck outside, we definitely plan to come back! If you like ciders, or want to try something other than beer, definitely check this place out!

Jon G.

Yelp
Not only do these guys make some of the best cider in San Diego, they are some of the nicest people ever! I love their cider not only because they always deliver 100% on the flavor they promise but it's wonderfully crisp and dry. Their truly dry cider is amazing refreshing and tastes just like what I was drinking in the UK this summer. I haven't hit one I haven't liked yet, but after today's visit I think the maloose is my new favorite. We stopped in today and they were so busy they sold out of all the bottles wanted to buy to go! Instead of politely declining us they asked if we would mind hanging around for a taster while they filled the bottles we wanted. In about 5 min they had the two bottles we wanted filled, labeled, and ready to go. I can't wait to stop in again ASAP!
google avatar

Robyn F.

Yelp
Well-made, clean hard ciders. Some innovative flavors, but what I like most is that their basic house style is delicious.
google avatar

William V.

Yelp
New place with great and knowledgeable staff. Got the flight to taste all of them with a group and everyone liked something different. For me the Rubus Citrus was the one.

Irene C.

Yelp
A hidden gem! Went there for a drink today and the owner was such a sweet lady. Ciders can be pretty sweet for me sometimes but these dry ciders were so flavorful without being way too sweet. ITS ALSO KETO FRIENDLY!!! I would 100% go back. We even got a few bottles to go. Try the Brut! Definitely a fav

Laur J.

Yelp
I am not a huge cider Drinker nor do I pay attention to low-calorie drinks but this stuff is really really good!

Laura P.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came here because we received a Groupon as a gift and we were not disappointed! Cider was great -- not too sweet, interesting flavors, great variety. The tasting room itself was modern and fun. We liked it so much that we got a bottle to go! Surprisingly, this was also really affordable. Would definitely recommend this place to everyone!

Cherie P.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem. Great drinks, staff was friendly and helpful. Nice change to beer or wine. Perfect for couples with different tastes.

Marian E.

Yelp
I am a picky cider drinker having grown up on good cider in the UK (called hard cider in the US)... finally found somewhere that makes excellent cider in San Diego! Highly recommend Guthrie Ciderworks - delightful owners, good atmosphere, and fabulous dry cider the way it is meant to be imbued. For those not ready for my favorite - their dry cider, there are some delicious alternative varieties with subtle different flavorings for every palate. My husband is not a cider drinker but loved the Rubus Citrus. Well worth a visit! You can bring dogs and Sara has no problem with you bringing your favorite nibbles to the tasting room if you wish to make an evening of it. Check them out!

Andres R.

Yelp
This place serves ciders that find the sweetspot between experimental and enjoyable. Really enjoyed the semi dry cider.

Kevin S.

Yelp
This place is a must check out for any cider lover. A very local feel with friendly staff. They also have sunset trivia on Wednesdays!
