Where To Eat And Drink In Foggy Bottom - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"There are a bunch of interchangeable neighborhood sandwich spots in Foggy Bottom, and everyone has their personal favorite. But only at GW Deli do you get an actual stack of bacon in your bacon egg and cheese. This is one of those places where you’ll spend all your time in line deciding you want one thing, only to get to the front and find yourself impulsively blurting out something else. But don’t panic while you wait - you’ll be happy with whatever you end up with. We like it best for breakfast (see above about the BEC), but it works for lunch too." - Sandra Rubinchik

Stopped in at Leo’s GW Delicatessen and tried the steak and cheese sub. Really tasty and very reasonably priced. The bread was fresh, the steak was flavorful, and the portion size hit the spot. There was a bit of a line when I went around 11 am, but that just tells me the locals know this is the place to be. Definitely worth the wait and I will be coming back to try more from the menu.

Google
Holy Crap!! This is hands down the BEST breakfast sandwich I’ve ever had! Decided to try DW Deli so I stopped in and ordered a Bacon, egg, & cheese on a croissant and let me tell you…AMAZING!! The croissant is light and flaky, the egg and cheese are great, but the star of the show is the bacon! They give you sooooo much bacon! It’s a dream come true! In addition, the service was great, I got my order super fast, and I love that it has that authentic deli feel! Also, you can’t beat the price!! I can’t wait to come back and get another!!

Google
This place is a time machine. Prices look like they were set in the 90's and frozen since then. For $7, you can get a massive breakfast sandwich that, if you're a normal human being, will fill you up for the entire day and if you're a local college student, at least through your afternoon classes. I splurged and got a BLT with egg on an everything bagel with cheese for a whopping $9. And the bacon quotient is next level, they just have some inside hookup on a massive bacon pipeline because each sandwich literally has 4-5x the amount of bacon you'd expect and rightfully deserve. Line is long but moves briskly, you'll likely be in and out in about an efficient 10 minutes.

Google
Top notch spot for an affordable and loaded sandwich. This spot feels like a trip to the past back when you could actually expect good quality portions for reasonable prices. It’s rare to find a spot in DC delivering this quality and quantity of food for the price. I’ll definitely be back.

Google
here’s the deal with gw delicatessen - blt on toasted sourdough with mayo. add an egg. what a lifestyle, truly the most premium. bon app.

Google
A great deli! The bagel sandwich in this spot is top notch. I ordered salmon bagel, they definitely don’t hold back the amount of salmon in my bagel. Love it! The staffs are super friendly and they’re so efficient (as sometimes the place gets little busy and packed). The price is absolutely affordable with huge portion of bagels. Definitely will come back!

Google
I’ve been working around this area for almost a year and never knew this place existed. I wish I did because I would come here for breakfast and lunch. 5 stars for 5 reasons 1. The barbecue brisket sub is delicious, juicy, tender and flavorful. I had lettuce, mayo, onions and cheese on it. 2. The price is right for the amount of food I got 3. Quantity is a lot and I could have split the sandwich for someone else. 4. Customer service is nice and the sandwich came out really quick. 5. A lot of other options to chose from and wide range of selection

Google
Amazing takeout only sandwiches and bagels! Do not pass if you are close by. I always get either the bacon sandwich or turkey club on a hoagie roll. Get it on a hoagie! Enough for 2 people! Quality deli meats and cheeses and the serving size is large! There are a variety of snacks here as well and Nemo cakes! If you know about Nemo cakes you are in luck- they have all the flavors. It you never had a Nemo cake, definately try them here. We grab them from the freezer section and let them thaw while we eat our sandwich. So good chilled. Overall a local solid choice. There is almost always a line but it moves fast and is worth it.

Yelp
Solid local spot. Stopped in for lunch after spotting it on yelp and I was not disappointed. I only go in to the office once a week and I'm going again tomorrow. Don't judge me!!! The sandwich was huge. I struggled to finish half. The bacon was super crispy and a little salty. They have a large variety of snacks and drinks. Literally any soft drink you can think of. Lots of nostalgic candies too. My friend has been going here since she attended SWW. When I told her I went, she got all sentimental and swears she's coming soon too. Stop by if you can - they have a ton of options.

Yelp
Love this place so much. It's right near campus which is great for a student who wants to grab something fresh and quick. They have so many options of food and items. All sorts of drinks from my childhood. The people who take your order and make your food have great service skills.

Yelp
GW Delicatessen has been a staple for GW peeps and those who work in the area for their breakfast/lunch runs - I was in the area, and I wanted to check this place out for their famous and popular breakfast sandwiches. I ordered their Sausage, Egg, and Cheese bagel sandwich - turkey sausage, fried egg, and American cheese on a Jalapeno bagel - the bread already comes 'toasted', and it's filled with a seasoned fried egg, a slice of American cheese, and the turkey sausage. The sandwich itself was prepared, made-to-order, so it came piping out; I wasn't a fan of the turkey sausage, as it had an off-putting odor to it, perhaps not being super fresh or it's just the line of sausage brand that they use? I was thinking maybe I should have gone for the turkey bacon... The staff here are super friendly and kind! There are also other market items you can purchase. There were patrons just constantly streaming in, so you know it's a local staple. Super limited and paid street parking available. +friendly service +limited street parking available

Yelp
Visited for a quick, late lunch. Had the everything bagel with egg, bacon, cheese. It was impressively stuffed with bacon, very tasty and filling. Great pricing for DC!

Yelp
Great bagel shop on GW campus that gives you a mound of bacon, everything you want in a bacon, egg, and cheese. This place is a tried and true GW spot, highly recommend getting a BEC on everything bagel.
google avatar

Shawn T.

Yelp
Nice local store with sandwiches in the back. Very friendly staff. Italian sub was ok. Nothing stellar. I'll go back for the breakfast sandwiches which everyone raves about.

Yelp
Big taste! I stopped by for breakfast while I was staying over in town for a show. I'm so glad I read the reviews, because it made my choice for breakfast super easy! This is a really cool place, it's definitely someplace that works great for a campus. Lots of selection on snacks and drinks, and a delicious deli in the back for big tasty sandwiches. I went with the recommendation of many on here, and got the bacon, egg and cheese! The pictures don't lie, there is a metric ton of bacon packed on a fresh bagel. I will never complain about too much bacon, but I do have to say that I had to pull some off and eat it separately so that I could actually taste the egg cheese and bagel. But a bacon egg and cheese bagel with bacon on the side? Don't mind if I do! I can definitely see you coming here after a long night of drinking for some greasy, salty goodness in the morning. If I stay in this part of town again, I will definitely be back. Staff was super friendly, and my sandwich came out, hot, fresh and fast. Even grabbed some bagels to take home with me.

Yelp
Long line moves quickly due to 6 servers taking orders and making the sandwiches. Somewhat cluttered place with lots of character.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
The mecca of egg, bacon and cheese sandwiches. If you even dare say they skimped you on the bacon, you just need to be slapped upside the head. Reasonable prices too, as mine was on a huge sub bun and was only $6, and could easily feed two.

Eileen T.

Yelp
I had the egg bacon cheese bagel and it was a good portion size with lots of bacon. Will definitely come here again!
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
Bagels are good, Good service, cheap fast and overall a go to place to get breakfast sandwiches and meals in DC! Little hidden Gem

Edward G.

Yelp
Super nice staff and big servings. Almost too much bacon on my egg bagel sando. I wanted to go back and try a big sando for lunch

Yelp
Everything about this place is lovely. The service is fantastic, the food is delicious, and it is ridiculously affordable.

Yelp
90% of the time there is a line out the door, and there's a reason for that. This place has some of the best sandwiches I've found in DC served from an eclectic and sometimes overwhelming NYC bodega-style deli. Keep in mind, the sandwiches aren't cheap--ranging from $5-$10 depending on toppings--but they make sure to pack on as many ingredients as possible to make that price point worth it. If you've been going to Call Your Mother for your breakfast sandwich fix, come here instead. Their eggs are always cooked perfectly over-easy/over-medium, and they load on the bacon. I'm not even exaggerating when I say that they put about a half pound of bacon on each sandwich. That alone makes the $6.50 price tag worth it. Not to mention, they source their bagels from Whatsa Bagel in Bethesda, which has bagels that are at least on par with Call Your Mother.

Mellissa R.

Yelp
Small delicious deli. People were really nice both at the order counter and checkout. We only had breakfast sandwiches but they were all very well made. Bacon portions were ridiculously huge. Could have ordered a second bagel with just egg and cheese and made a whole nother bacon, egg, and cheese. The university kids are really lucky to have this place so close.
google avatar

Mathylda D.

Yelp
Good breakfast sandwiches, busy around lunchtime though so it's not very fast. If you have the time i highly suggest it.

Jordan L.

Yelp
Went during my lunch break and be prepared to wait as the line was at the door. The food was definitely worth the wait. Everyone was happily in line to place their order and once you place your order the food doesn't take long to be served. Definitely will return!

Yelp
we stopped by for a quick lunch while walking around GW. GW Deli is a small shop with a deli in the back--order at the deli and pay at the front counter. there are some picnic benches outside to sit. the sandwiches are reasonably priced and there's a lot of options. there's even gluten free bagels and bread which i can appreciate! we got the roast beef sandwich and pastrami sandwich. they were generously stuffed with toppings and meat and got a bit messy. the bread was really soft -- usually we prefer a crunchier/harder bread. tasted good but nothing special really, but nevertheless a cheap place to get a take out lunch.

Yelp
Leo's GW Deli is quite likely the best sandwich shop in WDC. It's also a grocery store with a fine selection of items that are especially attractive to the GW college students. Nothing unique, except the Ramen and beverage (Yo-Hoo) and candy offerings. It's not the sort of place you go to to pick up milk and bread. The gem is the sandwiches. At lunch there are 30 people in line. But there are six people in the kitchen moving at Matrix-like speed. The line goes quick. (They don't take call-in advance orders except from folks like me that have been eating there for 20+ years.) Upon occasion, I'll order an egg, cheese, and bacon on a Kaiser for breakfast. The sandwich itself isn't that big, but there are a good five pieces of bacon on it. That holds for anything you order with bacon---BLT, club, and on. Bacon is Joe's speciality. Oh, yes, Joe is the owner. That man is force of nature. He oversees everything with a soft but hard hand and knows all his customers. When buying something simple, he'll often say "that's 2 for 1 today." Great guy. There are always special sandwiches, some a bit crazy and some reminiscent of youth, like the boneless rib. Order an egg, tuna, or seafood sandwich on whatever bread you like and you've got lunch and dinner. Sides are great too. Swing by if you're in town. You won't regret it.

Yelp
Back visiting DC again... my very first stop was to this deli!! Just a heads up, they stop serving their delicious hot sandwiches at 3:15pm because they close at 4pm. Unfortunately, I noticed their prices went up SIGNIFICANTLY. That was a major bummer. Especially since it's right at the GWU campus and these students are broke... We opted for cold subs since that's all they were offering at the moment. I had the corn beef with chipotle Mayo, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, onions and cheddar cheese... it was pretty good! Literally couldn't finish it all! 4/5 My kid ordered the smoked turkey sub with cheddar cheese, Mayo, lettuce, pickles, and tomatoes... her sandwich was HUGE! She really enjoyed it and could barely finish it. 5/5 My sister ordered the mushroom and spinach knish. They were dry AF. They need in it or something creamy. Definitely a hard pass for next time. 1/5 All in all, their subs were amazing! I'd definitely come back again EARLIER to get a hot sandwich!

Yelp
Best breakfast sandwiches in Foggy Bottom! This place always has a line out of the door for a reason. But don't let that deter you from going as they move the line relatively quickly. My go-to order is always a chicken sausage, egg & cheese -- and I typically switch the bread up depending on my mood (their options include an assortment of bagels, bread slices, croissants, & more). As someone who does not eat pork, I love that they have other breakfast meat options to choose from! One of the main reasons I love these sandwiches so much, is how much stuff they put on them! Most places give you one sausage patty, GW Deli gives two. Some places only place a couple of slices of bacon on sandwiches, they give you an entire mound! This place is great for lunch too! Chicken parm is my favorite for a midday meal

Yelp
Great stuffed fresh sandwiches at an extremely reasonable price. Got a corned beef on rye and was absolutely filled and delicious. The service was prompt and very friendly. Would highly recommend and will be returning.

Yelp
all of my bacon needs were met here, service is quick, and the vibes were great and made me feel like i was an undergrad again :,)

Yelp
mid af. as a gw student, people hype this place up so much. dc is a place that lacks 2 things: delis and diners. this is a foolish excuse of a deli. prices a little to high for my liking and the dude at the front always tryna get you to get a bag so he can charge you so don't fall for it. in terms of food quality, bagels always dry as hell, never enough egg, and the bacon egg and cheeses have WAY too much bacon. only get a sausage egg and cheese from here. also delis have to have some sort of chicken parm sandwich, grilled chicken, prosciutto, grilled veggies, etc. they have NONE of this. good luck if you trying to have anything other than breakfast. honestly this is the only deli in dc (that i have seen) that has anything close to a normal deli. sorry that this is the only option for you guys who actually live here.

Francesca M.

Yelp
Authentic, fast and good. Delicious bagels and panini, deli style, perfect for U students
google avatar

Lindsey D.

Yelp
If you're looking for a quick breakfast and bang for your buck then GW is the spot. These loaded breakfast sandwiches plus a bottle waster cost me under 15$. I got the bagel sandwich with sausage while my boyfriend got the sandwich with bacon. Both our sandwiches were loaded with protein; too much for us to finish. My boyfriend was able to get a gluten free bagel. Would recommend checking out this place if you're in the area.

Michael O.

Yelp
Amazing bagel egg and cheese bagels top notch and so quick defiantly one of the best bagel spots in dc
google avatar

Sean S.

Yelp
Best bagels ever. Such a cute spot. They also make epic sandwiches with Hebrew national kosher salami on a bagel, and can add whatever your heart desires to it. They also have chips and sodas galore. Also love their potato salad and coleslaw. Abs to top it off, this place is a little hole in the wall. Definitely go here!
google avatar

Cameron S.

Yelp
Old school deli with a lot of options, really easy option for a quick breakfast or lunch passing through GW's campus.

Yelp
Love this place! Typical deli with a thousand things to choose from. Kinda overwhelming if you don't know what you want. Winners for me: Pastrami on anything Everything bagel with sausage and cheese Pork roll Snacks Snacks Snacks

Yelp
Sooo good ! Breakfast sandwiches are huge and fresh. Will definitely visit any time I'm in DC. Friendly service !

Yelp
Little NY style hole in the wall mini mart and breakfast stop for us. Saw all the great bagel reviews and had to try. I got the salmon bagel and hubby got the bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich . We arrived around 9 and it wasn't busy, thankfully. Our order was processed fairly quickly and we were out the door and back to the hotel just a few blocks away. My salmon bagel was well loaded, maybe too much salmon to be honest. Sadly, the bagel was hard and it wasn't the soft deliciousness I was expecting as a basic indulgence. My hubby's bacon egg and cheese sandwich was crazy loaded with bacon... as if we asked for extra, extra, extra, EXTRA bacon! We are bacon lovers so that was a happy surprise, but the egg was on the light aside for a sandwich. I was going to give 3 stars for the hard bagel but figured the amount of toppings kicked it to 4 as they didn't skimp there! So the magic answer would be, no I wouldn't return. Seems like a popular place but my onion bagel was hard and that ruined the experience for me.
google avatar

Yelp
A classic. Cant go wrong w a bacon egg and cheese on everything w avocado they don't take phone orders anymore though

Frieda W.

Yelp
As a GW student, this place is a must. Great bagels and is relatively cheap. Wide selection of items
google avatar

TaNeisha J.

Yelp
Bacon! I seriously wonder how many pounds of bacon GW Delicatessen goes through on a daily basis. So, from the outside, this tasty sandwich spot is unassuming. The storefront and inside remind me of the neighborhood corner store where you'll go to pick up quick items, but the deli makes GW Delicatessen much more than that. Food: I ordered the bacon, egg, and cheese on a toasted cinnamon raisin bagel. I couldn't get past the bacon. It was so much (not a complaint at all)! My only gripe is that I didn't feel the bagel was fresh. It was a little hard even after being toasted. I really enjoyed my breakfast sandwich, and I loved the bacon even more. You'll see me again, GW *wink*.

Michael S.

Yelp
I am not in the Foggy Bottom area often but when I am, I always visit and get a pork roll egg and cheese. Best pork roll sandwich in the area.
google avatar

Victoria B.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall breakfast sandwiches. It's got a bodega feel and quick service. Be ready for a ton of bacon!!
google avatar

Yelp
Great sandwiches!!! Made to perfection Everytime! Just needs to open longer during the week!
google avatar

Joe B.

Yelp
Literally hands down the best bagel I've had in my life, and we try them all (everywhere) and all the time. For no more than $20, you can get TWO monster, stacked, delicious amazing goodness with two seltzer's and 2 coffees. Add some chipotle Mayo on top or on the side, with a slice of tomato to crunch and your set. You could definitely split one of these with anyone but you need to experience it for yourself. See the pics and enjoy!
google avatar

Michele H.

Yelp
OMG - the line was long but I got the most amazing egg salad sandwich that I've had in a long time. Excellent! Go directly there and manga manga manga!
google avatar

DeLonn R.

Yelp
BLT with avocado and Turkey, amazing. Try them out. Good food, nice service, and an authentic deli vibe.
google avatar

Melody L.

Yelp
And God said, Let there be bagels: and there was Deli. (Genesis 1:3) Deli is truly iconic and a gift to the world. Deli is always the answer. Failed a midterm? Deli. Boyfriend/girlfriend broke up with you? Deli. Annoying roommate's moving out? Deli. Finally got that dream hillternship? Deli. Still have GWorld money at the end of the semester? Deli. Waiting in line sucks but it's worth it.
google avatar

Anya B.

Yelp
Tried this place on my journey to find the best DC bagel, and unfortunately won't be returning. The bagel was fine, nothing to write home about, but unfortunately the sesame seeds on the bagel and the top layer were burnt. This gave the whole bagel a burnt flavor, which the cream cheese couldn't fix.
google avatar

Yelp
A classic staple of Foggy Bottom. I wish I had known about this place earlier because it's very solid and very reliable. A small, nondescript convenience store with a sandwich deli in the back, GW deli doesn't fail to provide. Sandwiches are very affordable, especially for the neighborhood. Even their more speciality sandwiches are under $10. I've been here twice and been very satisfied both times. I've had the BLT, and this second time had the corned beef hash. I will say it's not quite 5 stars for me (probably like a 4.5) because the sandwiches feel like they're missing just a little something. The bread could be a little better, the sandwiches a little better constructed and less greasy, and maybe some better spreads or sauces. But I'm being nitpicky for what it is. This place is great for a cheap eat. If I'm ever back in Foggy Bottom and looking for a cheap lunch nearby, I'm definitely coming here over Sweetgreen or Roti.

Nick A.

Yelp
MOST bacon ever on a breakfast sandwich. Everything else looked great too - and the store had lots of unique snacks.
google avatar

Victor H.

Yelp
You GW students are so spoiled! I say that with envy and jealousy because had they had a deli like this at GMU, I would never graduate so I could be close to a place like this. It's similar to a bodega with convenience store items but the stars of this place is the made to order sandwiches. Breakfast sandwiches are always available and perfect when you're nursing a hangover or if you need a quick bite that's filling. Also have pasta salads which are surprisingly tasty and empanadas and Italian meals like lasagna. Go for the sandwiches though. And be prepared to see a lot of students there. I hope they realize how lucky they are to have a place like this. And make sure you're ready to order when you're up or else I'll cut in front of you with my breakfast sandwich order ready! Sorry I'm not sorry!
google avatar

Quanisha P.

Yelp
It's a quick place to grab a breakfast sandwich on the way to work. It's cheap but for the drinks keep walking down a little bit to cvs or 7-11 to get cheaper drink.
google avatar

Maeline H.

Yelp
I came in here for lunch for a couple days because I was working in the next building over and had a lot of equipment to unload. The food is amazing, but I'm updating this because I had a conversation with an older gentleman who was super rude to me. I parked in the loading dock to load/ unload my car while I was working for GW. My car was blocked by another guy unloading stuff for the deli and I kindly asked him when he was going to leave because I was blocked. I was in no hurry and was just asking!!!! The older gentleman who worked here raised his voice and said "he'll leave when he's ready, that's a $500 ticket." The guy wasn't very nice at all. Hopefully he was just mad @ me and isn't like this to other people.
google avatar

Lena G.

Yelp
SO amazing. I come here almost every day. I usually get a pumpernickel bagel with cream cheese and tomato (sounds weird but it's good), but today I tried a bacon, egg, and cheese with avocado on a sesame bagel and . . . wow. They cook the egg perfectly, use fresh avocado, and pile on hella bacon. A beautiful experience. The deli sells every snack and drink you could dream of, as well as an assortment of baked goods and classic staples like deviled eggs, pasta salad, and knishes. I also appreciate the number of bagel flavors they offer. Everything is reasonably priced, and the employees are quick and friendly. Excited to try the rest of the menu!
