"Gwenie’s Pastries is a bakery located on Nebel Street in Rockville, known for its Filipino desserts. It began as a home business founded by Gwendolyn Fernandez, who started by distributing homemade desserts to local grocery shops. Her daughter Stella Fernandez joined the business full-time in 2010, and they later established a storefront. The bakery offers a variety of traditional Filipino desserts such as torta de Cebu, flan, biko, kutsinta, and ube halaya, developed from family recipes and Gwenie’s own creations." - Pat Padua

I have been wanting to try Gwenie’s Pastries for a very long time and I’m so glad I finally made it! The service was wonderful, the staff provided recommendations and info about the different items. I ordered the mango cake and puto rice cakes. The mango cake was good, more spongy than dense which is not my personal style but my family loved it. The puto were delicious, they had a great chewy texture and light and sweet coconut and rice flavor. They were a big hit with my family and we will definetly be returning for more! I will certainly be back to try the famous ube cheesecake and some other confections that looked amazing. 10/10, would recommend!

Nov 2024. Fine sweet doughnuts. Choose from hazelnut, ube, etc. Dougnuts infused with various creams and has Cristal sugar on the outside. Super delicious. Coffee just okay and not hot enough.

I love Filipino deserts, but I was extremely dissatisfied and disappointed with Gwenie’s. When I paid $10 for a Halo-Halo and it was not drinkable I was unhappy. I have never in my life got Ube ice cream and they put corn flakes cereal on the top. The Ube donut was mediocre. They need to fix the prices of their menu if they want customers to return. UNHAPPY!

Great selection of Filipino desserts, great cakes for birthdays. Went on a Sunday afternoon and there was no line and it moved quickly. The donuts are oozing with cream in different flavors (a tad too sweet for me but still very good). I also had strawberry calamansi drink which was refreshing and very sweet. No seating, everything is to go.

These were honestly some of, if not the best, doughnuts I’ve ever had. I got a mango and an ube, and both were absolutely delicious. The way the outside crust of the doughnut lightly played with the entire soft cream was a thing of beautify. The sugar on top? Nah, the cherry on top. It added the perfect texture to the bite to be sure. I would 100% recommend this place, in fact I would suggest they start growing actually.

Google
Hands down the best mango cake I’ve ever had. Got one for my fiance’s birthday, which they prepared on 10 minute notice and wrote on the cake. It was so good that we got another mango cake very next day for Thanksgiving! Excellence!

Almost left the Rockville area without visiting Gwenie's but I had a sudden craving for halo halo on an unseasonably warm day. It's a short walk from Twinbrook Metro and well worth the visit! The store is very small with no seating but there's a bench outside where I ate my halo halo. Most people drive in to pick up their baked goods. The halo halo was larger than I expected. It comes in a bowl with ube shaved ice, fruit gelatins, a tiny cube of leche flan, some other sweets, and a sprinkling of corn flakes! Perfect on a warm sunny day!

Google
So many Filipino desserts!! I came here from Arlington, VA by metro specifically for the ube halo halo. Worth it! It's a sizeable dessert & costs about $10. I couldn't finish it all. It's made with shaved ice🍧, which is unique. The shaved ice was so smooth, almost the consistency of firm, but creamy ice cream. The toppings were traditional. Highly recommend. The cashier was very nice. Everything is to go, & there isn't a dine in area. But the cashier let me sit on the small bench inside to eat my halo halo. I also bought an oval Leche flan, which I'll contribute to a small gathering in a few days. Cost $8. Probably could feed a small party of 6 people. The cashier said it will keep in the fridge for 1 week, which is perfect.

Yelp
The best Filipino bakery in the area with epic service. I got the ube cheesecake here and some Ube donuts and it was literally to die for. It was a perfect combination of "not to sweet." Since it was the end of the day, the staff added on a few extra items for me to try too! I will definitely be back! Fair warning. The parking can be limited from the other shops. I risked it and did an illegal park job but I was quick.... I wouldn't recommend it but the danger was worth the desserts!

Yelp
I tried the ube pie. Definitely tasty and moist. I've had ube in different desserts before but the flavor was very subtle in the pie. I will say this location is about as unaesthetic as it gets and a small slice of pie is overpriced at $9. There are other local bakeries nearby where you can actually sit down and get a dessert for half the price on real dining ware. I won't be back but if you want a wider selection of ube & pandan flavored desserts, you'd like this place.

Yelp
I was on the search for mooncakes and a friend had recommended Gwenie's Pastries. The thought of ube mooncakes was pulling my heart strings. When you order mooncakes, you get one ube and one red bean. They come two to a box and are the traditional small size. The only thing not small about them is the price. They were $27.50 for a box of two small cakes. I did the math, and that would mean that I would be paying $110 dollars for one small mooncake a piece for my immediate family. I thought that the price was too high, so I ordered donuts. I ordered ube, pandan, mango, and chocolate hazelnut spread flavors. They were delicious. We divided them up, so we could taste each flavor. The ube was my favorite. But, each of the flavors were yummy. We demolished our box of donuts. Service was very good. Our server was pleasant and helpful. They rearranged the store front and it was easier for customers to get around and look at all of the baked goods. There are a lot of choices and I always enjoy their donuts and other baked goods. It is a little bit hidden, so look for the purple door and awning.

Yelp
I've been craving for Ube cake since last year and I was quite sad that my usual place lost contact w/their vendor. However, by chance I was in Rockville & so we made a stop here as a recommended--though it was quite the search of the hole in the wall, for reference is next to DMV Empanadas. 1) The Ube Cheese Cake Slice was very nice. I overall don't get the cheesecake hype so Idk. My sister and mom love it! 2) Sapin in my mouth was like eating room temperature mochi. My sis and mom were not fans of the texture but I differ. It makes you smile when you eat it, I enjoyed it. 3) I forgot to take a pic I also order a Ube Halo Halo & we all loved it! I think this was our treat of the day and favorite item in the order. My mom said that the milk was very rich, and that Ube milkshakes(with the frozen milk) would be an awesome addition in the menu! 4) The main reason for my visit sadly which was the Ube cake was sadly a let down. It was dry (which I had been warned by the reviews but I still had hopes) It was definitely what I was looking forward the most and it wasn't moist--it felt like eating a bread not a cake, visually looks like a cake but it didn't taste like one. I probably would go back & try other items in their menu but I will continue my search for an Ube cake that's more to my liking. Costumer service was lovely and it definitely encouraged me to buy more, lol. Ambiance was really welcoming and given my social anxiety I felt safe and comfortable.

Yelp
I wanted to try their Mango Float Pie. It was a Weekend Special only sold July 8 to 10, 2023. I should have looked more carefully as I did not see it was a frozen dessert, well, slightly thawed - my fault for not checking. Per Gwenie's, it is made with Browned Butter Graham Cracker Crust, Mango Cream, Mango slices and drizzled with Mango Puree. It was good, but very difficult to eat. As I used a spoon to cut each piece of this dessert, I found myself pressing down really hard with difficulty. Maybe I needed to have it thaw out some more. I had also gotten some of my favorites as a backup in case (Shakoy and Ube Pie). Now, something they are offering this Summer is called Ice Candy. I had not seen it before and asked what it was. They shared it was like a push-pop but much creamier. You can choose from one of three flavors - Avocado, Mango and Ube. Visually it looked like a kisko freeze pop but much shorter and fuller. I got the Ube and Mango flavors. Since I love Ube, I decided to eat that one first. Now, I had no idea as to which side to eat from (should have asked). It is in plastic, where one side is sealed, and the other side is tied. I decided to untie it and pushed up what was on the inside (that is what you do with a push-pop). It was hard to hold as it was frozen, so I grabbed a napkin to hold it. It was delicious and creamy as they said. I could taste the ube for sure. As I pushed it more to the top, it was hard to differentiate the plastic from the dessert as it was so thin and then I felt like a kid as this creaminess started going down the side of the plastic. I think I just ate it the wrong way, completely. The following day, I googled how to eat ice candy and now I am better prepared in eating the next one. Update: A few days after, I allowed my second slice of the Mango Float Pie to defrost even more, and that slice was much better than the first (easier to eat as well). Wow...what a difference - it was delicious. Visited July 2023

Yelp
I've patronized Gwenies on many occasions and this visit was no different. Authentic Filipino dishes that are fresh and delectable. I always go for the Piaya and Taro cheesecake. There are many other options to partake in. If you're looking for a Filipino dessert place and are in the area I highly recommend Gwenie's!

Gretchen S.

Yelp
I would love to visit this store in person one day. So far, I've only ordered from here online through Amazon a couple times last year, but the service and quality of the products were excellent. I've only tried the ube crinkle cookies so far, so that's all I can speak on, but they are amazing! Chewy and flavorful and almost like a brownie/ cookie in one in terms of richness and texture. I highly recommend the crinkles whether online or in person and look forward to trying more items from them, hopefully one day soon!

Aarti B.

Yelp
Delicious Ube cake that isn't too sweet. While I was too stuffed for dessert at Purple Patch and missed out on Gweni's Pastries, I'm glad I got to try them at the holiday market in Mosaic District in Northern VA. Will try other goodies like the donuts at the store!

Justine T.

Yelp
Gwenie's, you've earned a loyal customer. The ube donut was life-changing! It reminds me of the malasadas (Portuguese donuts) in Hawaii. Each bite was heavenly - soft, pillowy dough filled with luscious and airy ube cream; I could eat a whole tray of these and not get sick of it. The flavors and textures were just perfection. The baked siopao was delicious, too. The meat was a bit too salty for me, but I loved the softness of the bread. The spanish bread was so good - the sweet filling reminded me of almond croissants, but with a fluffy bread, instead. The let downs were the ube cake and the ube cheese pan de sal. The cake was a tad too dry for me, although the flavor was good! The ube cheese pan de sal had a great texture, but the cheese filling was a too tangy/sour, and the ube filling was just ok. I will keep coming back to Gwenie's as long as they keep selling their delectable donuts! I'm excited to try their other treats, as well. Highly, highly recommend this amazing little pastry shop!

Sophie H.

Yelp
Oh Gwenies, how I love you so. I first tried Gwenies several years ago as an offering at Kuya Ja's. I never knew that they had a storefront. In speaking with a coworker on Thursday about my search for filipino food, she tells me that Gwenie's is tucked away in an unsuspecting location off of Nebel road. I thought I was in the wrong place because it was very industrial warehousey looking, but alas! There was this hidden gem. Parking is kinda tight and I had to circle one good time before snagging a spot. The store itself is quite small, but I'm sure the kitchen is larger (in the back). There are two display cases, filled with all sorts of wonderful treats, as well as a shelving unit perpendicular to the cases. We popped in around 550p, right before they were set to close. Lots of goodies had been ransacked through, but I'm proud to say I snagged the last two slides of mango cake (because I felt like the lady behind might take em lol). I also ordered a slice of Ube pie, a slice of Ube cheesecake, a dozen pan de sal, and a puto & kinsata combo. That pie is what dreams are made of! This is what I've been chasing after for years. It's so good and creamy! 10 out of 10! I just tried the Ube cheesecake this evening. It was good but not as creamy as the pie cuz umm it's made with cream cheese, duh! But I'm obviously biased towards the pie. I think I want that for Mother's Day. Yup I'm gonna tell husband to get me that pie! My eldest had the mango cake. It was so moist and was very light/airy. The texture was perfect. That mango cream wasn't overly sweet. She loved it. The kutsinta are the brown cup looking things. They kinda tasted like a coffee jelly. Not bad. The puto (those purple, yellow and white puff looking things) are like spongy rice cakes. My daughter said they tasted the same even though they were different colors. Bland was her description. I didn't get to eat any because I didn't know the container needed to be refrigerated?? By day 2, there were moldy spores so I sadly had to toss those bad boys out I got a dozen pan de sal. I didn't see them when she bagged them because they were already in a brown bag. I meant to get the Ube cheese pan de sal but these were just as fine. They were really big! And soft and fluffy. A hit with the family. I'll be sure to come here earlier in the day next time. Now that I know where they are, I'll be back!! I want to try the Ube halo halo and the donuts.

Xavier I.

Yelp
Sweet and unique desserts with great and helpful service. I ordered an ube cheesecake slice (8$) and 3 donuts (ube, pandan, mango) for $3.50 each. The cashier was kind enough to give us 4 free donuts since they were close to closing which was much appreciated. The ube cheesecake slice was decent. The donuts were all pretty good, I had them room temperature (cold) and warmed up which was ultimately better but both were still good, wish I could've had them fresh and warm which would likely have tasted the best. Overall, the desserts were solid and the service was even better.

Mimi I.

Yelp
Donut itself was good, but I didn't care for the cream part. There was no mango flavor, but more like having whipped cream, with the taste and texture (lightness of the filling).

Nichole L.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious desserts, I highly recommend the donuts and the ube flan cake. Service is quick and friendly even when dealing with an indecisive buyer like me. The lobby is small with minimal decor, but still very welcoming! They usually have a sample of one of their desserts to your right as you enter which is a delight.

Hunter B.

Yelp
I heard about this place and wanted to go out there and try it. The shop is very small with no real seating and a rather limited menu. I decided to go with the ube cheesecake and it was fantastic. The flavor of the ube mixed into a great cheesecake was too easy to finish. That being said, one slice cost $9 and despite it tasting that good I cannot justify that kind of purchase. All of their items are on a pricier side for how much you get. The quality is definitely there but not budget-friendly.

Jailene A.

Yelp
Tucked out of sight on Nebel Rd is one of the best bakeries in the area! Gwenie's Pastries is a Filipino-owned bakery with traditional breads and inventive takes on crowd favorites. We tried 3 of their filled donuts: Nutella, Ube, and Mango. O M G. These are officially my favorite donuts. We really couldn't decide which one was better; they were all 10/10!! Each donut was filled to the max, and the cream flavors were delicious and not overly sweet. The donut itself was so soft and fresh. 3 donuts came out to about $11. Next time I will need to try their pan de sal and ube cheesecake. There is plenty of parking right outside, and they had a steady line of people at around 12 pm on a Saturday. Definitely try this place out next time you're in Rockville!

Aileen L.

Yelp
Introduced my friend to some Filipino desserts even though I'm no expert myself and I'm happy to hear they love it as much as I do! Gwenie's has recently added more hours as well. This is our go to place for ube desserts but was the first time we tried the ube cheese pal de sal. I've avoided it in the past because my uncultured mind thought "salt bread? Cheese? Jam?" After watching Bluey, I realized cheese and jam do go together (Brie and jam etc) and so I purchased one. Not much later, it was split 3 ways and gone before we reached the car. So I walked back in and bought 3 more. The cheese reminded me of a cheese danish filling and the ube jam inside complimented it just perfectly. The bread itself is not salt but is a soft, fluffy bread to protect and contain the sweet mixture. In the past (I could've sworn I've written review last before), we've enjoyed their halo halo (shaved ice), ube cheesecake, and ube pie. I personally enjoy the pie more than the cheesecake because I don't like mousse-like textures. Their crinkles bag only come with 3 crinkles, but even one will fill you up. The only thing stopping me from visiting frequently is the distance I have to travel.

Vu L.

Yelp
Always a pleasure! Food is delicious. Service is excellent. Ambience is family friendly. Overall, their bakery is always. Hit. Great for birthday cakes, snacks and very delicious pasties. UBE, Mango, Pandang, and Chocolate.

Jamie J.

Yelp
The sweets here are insanely good. I highly recommend stopping by this place when you're in the area. They do great things with ube and pandan flavors in donut, cake, and pie form. Everytime I go it's a great visit and there's so much to choose from.

Neil V.

Yelp
While this place maintains traditional flavors and selections promoting the Filipino culture, it's outrageous charging $5.00 for a small piece of biko. You can make a big tray yourself that can feed 20-30 people for $10. Looks like greed took over as opposed to caring about the Filipino people who were there to support your business when you started. How shameful!

Paul S.

Yelp
Great place to stock up on pastries, breads, and donuts! Got a few new things to try out this time: baked siopao, ube cheese pan de sal, Spanish bread and ube donut. OMG their donuts are to die for! The filling is so light and probably the best donut I've ever had (well maybe except the strawberry donut they used to make, but I assume it out of season). The siopao is kinda like a Filipino bao filled with pulled pork; very good and filling. The ube cheese bread was incredible, although anything here with ube is amazing! Its a sweet cream cheese filling that was so good. Get here early when they open b/c they sell out of stuff fast. I came half hour late and they were out of coconut bread; I guess I have to come back soon.

Hannah H.

Yelp
Gwenie's Pastries is a Filipino bakery that serves the DC metro area, and you can always find their products in Filipino markets/eateries. They also offer catering options. I've tried their Ube Cheesecake, the Ube Custard Cake, an Ube cupcake, Ube-flavored Crinkles (a mixture of cookies and brownies), my favorite being the Ube cupcake - it has a good ube taste, super moist, and tasty. I'd like to try the rest of their dessert menu, such as the pan de sal and other breads. +Ube cupcake +products can be found in Filipino markets/eateries in the DC metro area

Thomas S.

Yelp
After our dim sum lunch, we were craving anything sweet. We settled on Filapino sweets after voting. A quick search in Yelp led us to Gwenie's, which was located in an industrial warehouse center. The bakery was small with limited bakes on display. Everything we purchased tasted excellent. Prices were very reasonable. Counter help was friendly and efficient. We will return with our next visit to Rockville.

Ngan D.

Yelp
I love this place! They have the best Filipino desserts in my opinion. I had a hard time finding the place at first since it is not all out on main street and the sign is kinda hidden. They also have their desserts at Kuya Ja or you can even get some of their desserts on Amazon. The place is very small but full of sweets!! I have tried many of their dessert items including cheesecake, donuts, flan, cake, cupcakes, etc. I don't think I can pick a favorite because I love them all. They have few popular flavors for all their dessert items. My favorite flavors are ube and pandan. What I love about their desserts is most of them are not overly sweet. Service is always good, can't complain at all.

Nina Z.

Yelp
I am so excited that I found this place. It has all my childhood favorites. We got some of them on this first visit -- cassava cake, pan de coco and ube everything (we tried the ube pie and cheesecake). When I say everything was absolutely delicious and fresh that's an understatement. There is such a big variety of items I will definitely be back trying other items time and time again. The staff was nice and patient with us as we decided. I wish the place was bigger though to allow people to sit and enjoy what they ordered immediately. I wanted to get halo halo but didn't want to have to eat it in the car. But who knows maybe next time I'll do it anyways. I'll certainly be back and you should too!

Vera J.

Yelp
Overpriced and overhyped. I got the ube cake and the ube custard cake. Both were mediocre with little ube taste. It's ridiculous to pay $16 for two slices of average grocery standard cakes. Also there's no place to sit. Just grab&go which makes the price even more unreasonable.

Sylvia D.

Yelp
I've had the pleasure of trying this location thanks to a friend who recommended it. First of all this cheesecake is amazing. I'm a big foodie and enjoy trying new things. My kids loved just as much. Will definitely be coming back for more. This place does not disappoint.

Paul G.

Yelp
Halo-Halo is made with Ube ice cream instead of shaved ice, making it much more luxurious than your average Halo-Halo. A very craveable dessert that I often go out of my way for.

Kellye P.

Yelp
Amazing deliciousness. I love everything here but my absolute favorites are the UBE donuts, the ube flan, UBE cakes, just everything is so perfectly flavored. Best pastries in town! Hands down

Tamarah C.

Yelp
Delicious desserts, friendly service and convenient parking. We drove from a distance to give them a try and it did not disappoint

Carolina M.

Yelp
I've been purchasing Gwenie's pastries at Kuya Ja's for a while and I love everything. My favorite is the ube cake, so for my birthday I told my husband that's what I wanted. OMG!! So good! It made me very happy. When we picked it up I also got some pan de coco and ube loaf. They're so fresh and full of divine flavors!

Prabha L.

Yelp
This place got the best ube and pandan desserts they are bit pricey but it's worth it ! The cakes and donuts

M D.

Yelp
The most amazing pastries, donuts, cookies, pie, etc. Have not found anything that I don't like. Super friendly people working there too! Highly recommend.

Farhat K.

Yelp
Best cake ever. Seriously, I ordered 3 slices of Ube cake and ate almost all of them in a 36 hour period. Super moist, and the ube cream.....the ube cream is a sweet-tooth's paradise. Also, the donuts are great too (I got Ube and pandan). It was fluffy, and the cream inside was perfectly sweet and light. I also got the Ube halo halo and that was very delicious too. All in all, my sugar levels are probably spiking almost 4 days later, but it was worth it. Highly recommend checking them out. Just keep in mind they are open on limited days, and the parking lot is a little packed.

Morgan H.

Yelp
Gwenie's is located in somewhat of a small industrial parking lot, and off the main road so easy to miss - However this place is great. No seats to eat inside, so takeout only - But their pastries are delicious. My favorite is their Ube Cheesecake, which was amazing. Not overly sweet, and it was towards their closing time on a Saturday - So thought it might not have kept well throughout the day, but it was great. Will definitely be back here in the future, and highly recommend trying this place.

Teresa L.

Yelp
I wish I could say waiting years for a Gwenie's store front was an exaggeration, but it's not! I've tried most of their offerings by now and I am always craving their ube pies/cakes and ube doughnut. I brought one of my friends here after lunch recently and he was "too full to order" dessert, but after pretty much bullying him into at least bringing something home for later, he got a pandan doughnut and an ube doughnut - he profusely thanked me. Trust me when I say you need Gwenie's Pastries in your life. Please (please) open a store in VA!!

Lauren D.

Yelp
Great local bakery! A little on the expensive side but worth it because it's a gem. Recommend their mango and pandan flavored desserts.

Bhavna A.

Yelp
I like the ube pie. The cheesecake was ok. The purple bun was ok. I got a sample of these green pandan things which were meh.

Priscilla Y.

Yelp
While Gwenie's no longer sells delicious food (gotta go to Kuya Ja for it), I still love coming here for their baked goods. I love anything ube. Their ube cake/cupcake is so moist and delicious, and will always be my favorite, but I also enjoy their maman ube (basically an ube cupcake without frosting), ube donuts, and sapin-sapin. They also have pandan and mango cupcakes, ube pies and cheesecake, pan de sal, halo halo, They have limited hours: Friday-Saturdays 11am -6pm and Sundays 11am -3pm.

Jadelyn B.

Yelp
This charming hole in the wall is a little slice of heaven here in Maryland. Their halo-halo is a perfect treat for summer and they don't skimp on the toppings. There's an incredibly huge selection of treats to choose from, both savory and sweet. The staff is kind, professional and fast; they also uphold good sanitation and pandemic precautions. For those who are new to Filipino flavors and foods, I recommend their donuts. They're soft, pillowy and come in a variety of flavors that are all incredible. My family went through a whole dozen in minutes.

Maria P.

Yelp
I cannot get enough of their doughnuts and cupcakes...so much so that I literally place an order once a week. You can order in person or through Uber Eats. So back to the doughnuts...they have this incredible dough and the filling is insanely good. Literally, so delicious. The cupcakes have the perfect airy bite to them and look beautiful too. They also have Biko (vegan) that's like...well...just try it for yourself. You'll see why I keep coming back :D

Vishal S.

Yelp
I recently read about Ube and the various desserts that are based on Ube. I wanted to bake some desserts using Ube but wanted to get a taste for this food item before I went down the cooking rabbit hole. Yelping for "Ube near me" led me to Gwenie's! And Thank the stars for that recommendation! The store is located in a warehouse location and has no storefront other than a heavy metal door! I thought we were at the wrong place, but I did venture ahead and opened the door. That action revealed a store behind the doors and we went right in! The display shelves is packed with all kinds of desserts and other items. I was amazed with the variety of items available here. We got a good introduction to all the goodies on sale and ended up purchasing a whole bunch of items! Ube Cheesecake Ube Loaf Ube Cupcake Mango Cupcake Cassave Cake All the items were epic! And we are instant fans of Ube! Even the non-ube desserts were really awesome! We have been to Gwenie's many times since our first visit and have even introduced our friends to desserts from this store. Gwenie's is definitely on our go to list for dessert in the area!

Yelp
I've been wanting to visit Rockville just for Gwenie's Pastries. Ever since a friend bought me a piece of gwenie's Ube cheesecake, I've yearned for more. I went without pre-ordering anything and just grabbed a bunch of whatever was available. Unfortunately it was a little later in the day so they didn't have all of the donut variations I would have wanted. So whenever I go again, I'll pre-order stuff or I'll just go early in the day. I plan on having my coworkers help me eat the cupcakes and donuts. They will be extremely excited for all these unique flavors! The shop interior is small but they use the space efficiently. Both people working the counter were very nice. I was already a die-hard gwenie's fan after eating one piece of their Ube cheesecake, and nothing has changed after this visit.

Yelp
Wish we come earlier. It was near closing time. Their donut was great. If I have a chance swing by next time. I'll definitely order their halo halo

Yelp
I started this review over a year ago after purchasing an Ube cupcake. I just wanted bragging rights because I teach with several Filipino teachers. Wow, I was in heaven. However, it wasn't until I was treated to an Ube and Pandan doughnut by a very generous friend that I was hooked! Theses are the best! I did come back for round two last weekend, plus a slice of cheesecake. Everything is delicious! This gives me more of a reason to drive the extra three miles to shop at the nearby Harris Teeter in place of the one closest to me. As if I need a reason to patronize Gwenie's! You need to stop by; don't be discouraged by the warehouse location. There's a hidden treasure trove of deliciousness waiting for you!

Yelp
If you've never tried an Ube flavored dessert before, you MUST change that. Ube is actually a purple yam, and when used in desserts it provides a mild and delicate sweetness. Gwen's Pastries is the best place in the area to find traditional Filipino desserts including Buko Pandan and Ube pie. Everything I tried there was yummy but I'd highly recommend the Ube Silvanas and the Ube cream pie....mmmmmmm

Yelp
Finally got to try some ube desserts! The purple color is so bright and unique. I tried the ube pie and ube cheesecake. I wasn't sure what they would taste like. The pie had a nice chewy texture but overall tastes like regular sweet potato pie. I preferred the cheesecake, it had a really mild flavor but was smooth and creamy. These were pretty to look at but the flavors were not all that bold. For $7 each, I don't know if I would get it again just because they're ube. It seems like a lot of people really like and support Gwenie's. Maybe because Filipino desserts are harder to come by, this place stands out. I enjoyed the treats but I didn't find it super special.

Yelp
We were exploring Bethesda when we came across one of our favorite Filipino bakeries, Gwenie's Pastries. We always buy treats from them when we see them at festivals in the area. We've also seen some of their desserts served at a popular Filipino restaurant in D.C. called Purple Patch. The service was quick and very friendly, and we're so happy we know where their shop is located now. Got the Mango cake, Ube Custard cake, and Ube Crinkles. Yah!

Yelp
Loved the ube pie! Absolutely worth trying if you've never had it. I also ordered the ube cake - didn't like it as much as the pie. Having said that, I think the cake would go really well with a cup of coffee. Very friendly customer service. Will be back.

Yelp
My favorite donuts in the area and great Thai iced tea. Their bread is also great, and the people that work there are nice.
