Gypsy's Trattoria Italiana

So so yummy and worth all the hype! This place made me miss home in the best way ever. Their Godfather dish is off the charts. The crisped pancetta and goldenly crisped chicken was everything and more! The pure roasted garlic is so smooth and delectable when spread on the bread. I will say, it's a very humble establishment. The service is quick, the workers are respectable in many ways, and it's simple. It's a place for food without all the extreme over the top stuff you see at restaurants today, while also still bringing you what feels like a piece of home at restaurant level. Ambiance was chill, many tables inside the restaurant and they definitely do fill up fast!

Honestly was not prepared for the environment that was Gypsy’s. Came on a Sunday around 9pm. The guy taking orders was pretty rude, I asked if I could have some mozzarella on added on my pasta. Went back and fourth with the gentleman because he told me he cannot put mozzarella because theres cheddar mixed in the cheese. Which makes no sense since there is chicken parm on the menu. W.e no mozz on my pasta, cool. Then sitting down is another task, there was people holding seats for people with a group like 8 when there is only 3 people in there group currently. While there is other people with outside food taking up multiple tables taking up space for paying patrons. One guy with a ramen another group of people eating burritos and donuts. No one managing the seating was pretty crazy to me. Cool ill sit at the table next to the door that is being held by someone smoking a cigarette in 30 degree weather. Honestly the food was great. I was surprised how well my pasta was. All in all I would only get take out next time, I wouldn’t subject my self to this dine in mayhem again.

TLDR: You can make their meatball sandwich at home easily! Just dump a can of spaghetti-o's on some cheap bread, let it soak until soggy. Side note - Last year I got food poisoning from their Gypsy Chicken. It sent me to the hospital. I used to order Gypsy's Trattoria Italiana several times a week. I always ordered the Gypsy Chicken dish and it was always great until one time I ate it and I ended up hospitalized. Ever since then I've avoid eating there but eventually I came back and tried some other dishes. I've tried the chicken parmigiana, pizza, calzone and meatball sandwich - all have been subpar. I think this restaurant is cutting corners to save money and not using fresh ingredients. Hence the flavorless meat slices in my picture instead of flavorful meatballs as advertised. Nice portion sizes though and I hear the Frutti Di Mare is good but I'm too scared to try their seafood. Dear Gypsy's, what happened? Quality matters. Please get it together. Thanks.

Food: it’s pretty good for the price. The flavors not too bad and it’s filling as this is a popular choice among students. Service: always busy but the staff is always helpful with recommendations and answering questions. Ambiance: very casual and a bit crowded. Would recommend the outdoor public seating.

This spot had a charming ambiance, with adorable lamps and chairs that immediately caught my eye. I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs, which I’d rate a solid 8.6/10. The portion was generous, and they didn’t skimp on the meatballs. It also came with garlic bread, which was a standout—the roasted garlic spread on the bread was incredible. My boyfriend tried the gnocchi primavera, but unfortunately, it was a disappointment at 4.8/10. The gnocchi was overly soft, and the dish was overloaded with olives that had an off-putting metallic taste, which overshadowed the other flavors. The service was straightforward—nothing notable, just taking orders and delivering food. One downside was the extra $1 charge per item for card payments, which felt unnecessary. Overall, it’s a nice spot with good food, especially the spaghetti and garlic bread. I’d recommend it if you’re in the area and feeling hungry, but perhaps skip the gnocchi.

UPDATE 3/22: Excellent service, great prices and delicious food. My wife found this spot and took me here the 1st time because the owners are from New York and that's where we are from. Well this place did not disappoint. Tonight was the 2nd time we went and we enjoyed everything we had. We will continue to be customers here!! Very delicious... everything was hot

Gypsies is a Italian staple for the entire bay area. All sauces are made from scratch we usually get the chicken Alfredo or salmon Alfredo and decided to go with a customer recommendation of the beef Bolognese and have been getting it ever sense. It’s really just raviolis they also have a ravioli Alfredo that you can add chicken to. Do not sleep on this gem order what you can afford. You can turn any one of the meals on the menu into a combo which is a soda plus a salad not to exceed 15.99$!!! Don’t be afraid to double park like everyone else.

It stayed busy the entire time we were there. It's a small spot. I'm not a big pasta eater so you might want to take my review with a grain of salt. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't AMAZING... but that's just me AGAIN I'm not a pasta lover. The portions were big and I enjoyed my salad. The service was ok. One other thing just putting cloves of garlic on bread doesn't make it garlic bread 😮‍💨I scraped it off....

Gypsy's is one of those rare places that never lets you down. Their shrimp alfredo is always consistent the flavor is simple, comforting, and honestly just perfect every single time. Nothing fancy, nothing overdone... just exactly what you want it to be. And that garlic bread? Warm, soft, loaded with garlic, and absolutely hits every time. It's a true hole-in-the-wall spot, always busy, right in the heart of a college town but that's part of the charm. The energy is great, the food comes out fast, and no matter how many times I go, it never disappoints. If you want a spot that delivers comfort food the way it's supposed to, this is it. No frills, just really good food done right.

this place never fails to keep my belly happy!!! literally such a high quality, price friendly pasta spot. i seem to always get the pollo con pesto bc their pesto sauce is so slay. i should def try other things on their menu but its so hard to pass up on this esp when im in the area!!! i went during the winter break for uc berkeley students on a tuesday afternoon so it was the emptiest ive seen this store. i was able to sit down and dine without the place feeling overly crowded.

Lucked out with easy seating on a non-busy evening. Hustle and bustle in the kitchen but extremely slow getting food out to patrons. Food quality is solid especially for the price you pay. And grab a discount if you pay in cash.

My friends and I were hungry after the Babymonster concert in Oakland and were looking for late night post concert grub and one of them said "I know a spot lol." So here we are. I ordered the spaghetti with meatballs which came with a side of garlic bread. The spaghetti was good. The garlic bread was also pretty solid. I really liked the portion sizes. I really like that this place is open till midnight. There is also a decent amount of seating. This place does tend to get packed as it is located in a college town. Thankfully we were lucky and were able to find a table. Anyways, try it out if you like. :)

A friend who went to Berkeley recommended me this spot as I traveled here for work and this place did not disappoint! I definitely didn't know what I was expecting when I saw the restaurant. It's a small place with maybe 10 tables inside, and there are large tables ohtside too. I love how they have cash prices compared to card. I didn't have cash on me but next time, I definitely want to take advantage of that! I got the italian calzone and the eggplant pasta. It was so delicious. The calzone was huge! Definitely more of a shareable item and not individual if you also get a pasta . Leftovers for dayssss. Expect a wait to order and for the food to come. The place gets packed so tables can be hard to come by! I can't wait to come back and try other items :).

Fire no frills italian restaurant in Berkeley's Southside! Gypsy's is located in the Asian Ghetto with multiple other food spots and serves delicious Italian food. My favorite items are their calzones which are fully stuffed, not too pricy, and HUGEE. Their pastas are great too - they come with a side of garlic bread and have good portion sizes. I recommend bringing cash because they charge less for cash purchases in comparison to card. Great spot for a carb fix either in the day or late at night!

If ever you are in Berkeley, this is the place to go. It can be one in the morning and this will be the one and only go to late night cravings pasta joint. The service here is amazing. They treat you like family. The manager that runs the kitchen is a very nice lady. The cashier who runs the place is very good at taking custom requests. Half of the time I am getting the same two dishes, a chicken pesto Alfredo or the Godfather. These are two of the most popular ordered dishes. Mainly due to the flavor and fresh Alfredo sauce what keeps me coming here is the ability to change the pasta the ability to add toppings and make these popular dishes. Taste even better or more home. If you order for here, the dish is huge. If you ordered to go, then ask that you have the garlic bread on the side they tend to put it in the container, which makes it soggy. I always ask for extra garlic bread since they make the garlic bread in house. This place is always packed and is right next to the UC Berkeley campus so always expect for there to be a line. Always expect that they can't hear you and try not to let anyone else scare you from coming here. The parking is always not available and Berkeley cops are terrible so always be ready to take a walk.

Whenever I'm in the area, I stop by here often. Good bang for the buck.... Really delicious food when you're on a budget. Can't go wrong with the pollo con pesto or the crazy Alfredo.

With stocks plummeting and my 401k dropping faster than a Rollercoaster, this place was a major money winning find for us. No frills. Eat and go..no fancy lamps or tables. But, really this is just as good if not better than some charging double the price in the Bay Area. Talk about a seafood pasta for under $20 that's enough to fill you up and has decent portions, can you say "win-win?" No, but seriously this Frutti De Mare could rival almost any in SF that would sell for $30, and taste just as good, and maybe even better. Mic drop, mind blown...had fresh mussels, seafood, good tomato sauce...I was seriously wondering if I was transported to like 2001 prices. Highly recommend this pasta. Tasted amazing! I thought I ordered the Godfather's Favorite, but I got some chicken Alfredo with sausage thing. Anyways, it was still good in a rich Alfredo way. Tasty with good bread with fresh garlic. Can you open up a location in SF so I can visit every 2 weeks? Portions are huge and worth it. Discounts for cash. Cash is king. Take my cash, I'll be back for more.

This place is a combination of piping hot, filling, tasty pasta in gigantic portions. This isn't the place to neatly pile a tiny fork turned spiral of pasta on your plate and call it art. No, this is a no fuss, no frills restaurant that serves affordable, tasty, cooked to order, plates filled with pasta. The pros: delicious, affordable, very laid back vibe, generous portions (you will be stuffed if you eat a whole plate/bowl of pasta. Stuffed!!!). They are also accommodating as I asked for the chicken pesto pasta made with fettuccine to be swapped out for penne pasta and extra pesto sauce (hence tons of sauce on my plate and the pesto was so intense and not skimpy like lots of other restaurants anytime pesto sauce is used -- that includes sandwich shops, also.) and they happily obliged, no problem. The food came out piping hot and stayed hot for quite a while. They give you a slice of garlic bread with a real, caramelized bulb of garlic. I had to ask for my friend's garlic cause I like it just that much. Their side salad is also huge and is best to maybe split it with a dining partner because it is big enough to feed at least 2 people. If you ate the whole small side salad, you'd have very little room for pasta. Just saying. The cons: they don't offer glasses of water. Nope. If you are thirsty or want something to drink with your food, you need to look in the beverage case and buy what you want to drink. I find that a tad bit uncool/sus, but they are very generous otherwise. So, I will just buy a drink next time. Lol. They are not skimpy on the protein in the pasta, so I can't complain. You will bus your own table at this place. You will be eating in a room filled with other people eating and talking loudly. If you are neurodivergent and maybe loud sounds or noises or talking bothers you, bring your earphones and try to listen to a podcast or music while you eat. The sound of others can be distracting at times as it can get very loud in the small-ish restaurant. So, this place is perfect for students, runners needing to carbo load (is that still a thing?), people on a budget, or anyone that just loves homestyle Italian food. No, you aren't going to find Iberic pork here or fancy plates of Osso Bucco or fresh shaved parmesan slowly sliced over your plate. Nope. But you will find delicious, hot, filling, huge plates of pasta with bold comforting flavors, cooks that have a way with working their magic over the stove where you see flames leaping up from time to time as they cook, and a chaotic looking but super organized kitchen crew. Oh, and the cashier, main guy, he is going to put a fork in your plate for you. I know, that sounds trippy. But like I said, this place is very in your face, it is all about good food and good quantities of it, at an affordable price. Definitely come here if you want a filling plate of fresh cooked for your pasta and toasted garlic bread for less than a $20. Maybe an even $20 if you get a drink.

the godfather's pasta is my go to i've been twice the first time i got the godfathers pasta second i got the godfathers pasta calzone and the flavours are so yummy. although i do note if you are with a group go for the pasta the calzone takes a lot longer than just the regular pasta and you also don't get the garlic confit bread but it's very yummy! the place is usually packed or gets packed

As a commuter, I go out of my way for Gypsy's. The food is consistently delicious and FRESH. The service is quick and easy, as the folks taking orders are also helping cook. I recommend calling ahead if you are picking up a to go order. The ambiance of Gypsy's and the street it is on is the epitome of Berkeley. Great food, great vibes, great people. Highly highly recommend, I think you get a wholeeeeeee lotta food for what you pay for compared to so many other italian spots. The garlic bread always hits the spot and never misses. I don't have photos to post of my food because I immediately eat it. Will update my review the day I can control myself to be able to take a pic AND THEN eat. The chicken and broccoli is simple and delicious, my boyfriend switches between pizzas and the chicken marsala.

The fact that there aren't more locations is CRIMINAL. God forbid someone wants to dive into a bowl of Alfredo after a night out... We came by for lunch after an open house and ordered the Godfather's Favorite and Scampi with fettuccine. The pasta was al denté, it had a good amount of toppings, but everything was really lacking flavor. I grew up eating very very simple foods, so for ME to notice the lack in flavor/salt means something. Other than that, im sure you're already expecting it based on the location, but parking is horrendous. We probably spent 20 minutes looking for parking, so be aware of that during the weekend or be prepared to do a lot of walking. Total: ~$40 Tip: Parking can be difficult, consider takeout. It's slightly cheaper if you pay with cash.

Hands down the best pasta in town. I'd make the drive here just to eat. The godfather favorite is my go to. So good!! Perfectly seasoned and just the right amount of sauce. This place gets packed and seating is limited. Parking can also be a pain but, this place is worth it. You have to try if you are ever around the area.

Been coming here for years and it remains my favorite Italian restaurant ever! For food, all of their pastas are spectacular and I haven't had one I didn't like. The portion size is very generous and also comes with a side of bread. They also have decent vegetarian options as well. I wouldn't come here for the service or ambiance though. It is difficult to find seating and staff aren't super friendly. It's mostly a place to go for food and not for the setting. It is conveniently close to campus, which is a huge plus!

This was my favorite place, until tonight. I thought I was lucky and found a parking spot across the street. There was only 1 guy in front of me in line. Pay with cash and you get a small discount. I ordered 2 combo calzones and 1 godfather pasta special. I paid $43 and waited 25 minutes for my orders. Once I got home I ate into my calzone, and found a hard piece of bone. This might be my last trip to Gypsy.

I love you Gypsy's. You've been fantastic ever since I was a college student eating a nice hot $10 pasta at 11:37 PM on a Wednesday night after a long day of attempting to study. You remain delicious almost a decade later. The pollo con pesto will always be my favorite. I must have ordered that meal hundreds of times during my college run, and I still dream about it sometimes. The portions are enormous and the food is cheap. The garlic bread is great dipped in the sauce. Victor's spaghetti is also quite tasty if you're looking for a tomato pasta. Gypsy's represents the real Berkeley food culture imo. With new fancy stores opening and closing left and right, this is one of those places that's a long time staple and will likely remain past all the other fads. It's not fancy, and you'll have to pay for water. If you bring cash, it'll be cheaper. Order at the counter and find your own seat and prepare to have a full and happy belly.

Gnocchi primavera is my all time favorite. The garlic on the bread is icing on the cake and makes it a very flavorful accompaniment. Been here multiple times and never been disappointed.

A solid 3.5 star restaurant. For the price you paid, you get a huge portion, piping hot pasta and calzone. This is a quick pasta place that offers decent pasta, pizza, calzone, and plates (meat and seafood). The meatball sandwich was filled with cheese and so was the godfathers pasta filled with calzone.

Legendary establishment! We've been here countless times and it always smacks. Our favorites are still the Pollo con Pesto and the Godfather's Favorite. You won't want to move after those two haha. If we're craving something more light, we'll go for the Frutti di Mare or the Scampi. Note that you can change the noodle type in each pasta at no additional cost. Be back soon!

Wow this place brings back so many nostalgic memories! Gypsy's is a Berkeley staple and as someone who spent my childhood in the East Bay, my friends and I stopped by all the time for cheap prices, huge portions, and great vibes. I recently visited again and it is just as good as I remember it to be. The godfather's favorite was perfectly garlicky and creamy. The side of bread with actual roasted garlic was the perfect side. We went at slow time so our food came out within 10 minutes, all freshly made and piping hot. It's such a good go-to when you're craving pasta since they have so many options. Love this place!

This place is open late & although it was busy at 9pm on a Tuesday there was available seating, it was comfortable, and most importantly the food was incredible! I almost forgot to take a pic of my vegetarian calzone before I dug in. It was delicious, but next time I'll ask to hold the olives, but only because I don't like . Will definitely remember this place especially for a late night nosh!

This was my first time having gnocchi, and I thought chicken gnocchi was pretty good. The sauce was flavorful but oily, and the gnocchi was soft. I also liked the garlic bread, and it was flavorful and a bit crunchy without being too hard. I think that the chicken was kind of mediocre, but overall it was a good meal. The service was fast, even though it got busy.

I'm a huge pasta lover. I have been wanting to try this place for everrrr so when I finally got the chance while visiting Berkeley, it was awesome. The interior is a bit packed at times and is on the smaller side, service is efficient and pasta didn't take too long to come out, considering that every dish is made to order. Pollo con Pesto (4.5/5): The pesto was absolutely delicious. It's a pesto cream sauce so you get the strong flavor of basil, but also the richness of the cream. We substituted the fettuccini for penne, the sauce stuck onto the pasta really well and the hollowness of it allowed for us to get more sauce in for every bite. Only complaint was that the chicken was pretty dry and not well flavored, and the garlic bread is a bit cold and bland. Gypsys Chicken (4.5/5): The cream sauce was to die for, I loved how rich and creamy it was, paired with the mushrooms as well. It's not exactly alfredo, has a bit of a different taste to it but it was sooo good. Again, my only complaint was the chicken and the cold bread. Would definitely come back! Portions are absolutely huge so definitely share if your stomach is smaller. It's big enough for two people to eat!

this place is superb for being a college/budget-friendly pasta spot. prices are so affordable, and the flavor is fantastic. from top to bottom: crazy alfredo pollo con pesto gypsy's chicken in the order of least to most favorite (not to say they weren't good, we just had a favorite of the three) gypsy's chicken: very tasty, mushroom umami flavor with notes of garlic. I just wish it was fettucini/longer noodles instead (personal preference). I was too nervous to ask to substitute something (unsure if it's a surcharge as well) crazy alfredo: my boyfriend liked this one because they gave so much chicken and sausage. he actually couldn't even finish it because he got full from the protein overload (which is crazy!) pollo con pesto: the clear winner. immediately hit with parmesan and garlic flavors, super rich and tasty. My boyfriend immediately said it would be his new go-to when we come back. tip: pay in cash!! it's about $1 cheaper for most dishes; running about $14 for pasta (the portions are also bigger if you eat there, we just had work right after so we had to get it in the to-go container) also note: their garlic spread bread is phenomenal. it's a lightly toasted thin baguette with roasted garlic spread on top. in the picture one slice had more garlic spread on it, which I wasn't mad about at all. we will 100% be coming back, they are also open til about 1am on the weekend!!

Gypsy's Spaghetti Carbonara nails the basics--silky egg-coated noodles, crispy pancetta, and a peppery kick. It's rich and satisfying, though the sauce could cling better to the pasta. Portions are huge (leftovers guaranteed!). Pair With: Their garlic bread for extra indulgence.

Luckily, there are some tables and benches outside as well! They're open late, and with good, cheap food with large portions, I almost always drop by when I'm in the area. My favorite dish is the Godfather's Favorite, and it never disappoints. The food is a bit heavy, but worth every calorie!

Tightly formatted Berkeley restaurant near campus. Everything we ordered was portioned generously. Here's my ranking of the food my group had from fave to least fave: 1. Chicken Parmigiano: really flavorful and cheesy, chicken was nice and crispy 4/5 2. Pollo Gorgonzola: verrrry Gorgonzola heavy, sauce is a bit light/lacking depth for me besides the Gorgonzola 3/5 3. Fettuccine Al Salmon, loved that it had a lot of salmon, but sauce was weak and had a watery aftertaste. 2/5 (did taste better after sitting in the fridge for a day, but still like a 2.5/5). Everything is counter order and self seating, so good luck finding a seat on a busy night. Service is relatively quick. All beverages cost extra money, including water! Beware!

Amazing food, but make sure to park somewhere because the lady will give you a ticket even without leaving it on the car. I was in the car & never got a ticket until it got sent home in mail. I even left and circled around because I was waiting in the car with my daughter waiting for my man to get the food smh! They're out there, scamming tickets !

Foods so nice, we came back twice! We had an incredible meal at Gypsy's Trattoria in Berkeley! My fam and I ordered the Crazy Alfredo Pasta and the Chicken Pesto Calzone, and both were absolutely delicious. The pasta was rich, creamy, and had just the right amount of spice--definitely a must-try for Alfredo lovers. The calzone was packed with tender chicken and flavorful pesto, all wrapped in perfectly baked dough. What really stood out was the portion size and value. The servings were generous, and the prices were super reasonable for the quality and amount of food you get. If you're in Berkeley and craving hearty, flavorful Italian food, Gypsy's Trattoria is a top pick.

Portions seem smaller than usual recently but still very tasty. I always go for the chicken alfredo. Inside can be super crowded during busy hours.

We ordered 2 combos, and one of our salads had the wrong dressing. 15.98x2=31.98 +6 (above base pricing) 37.98 before tax 41.78 with 10% tax About $42 The food was pretty good Drink selection was sparse. Was hoping for a root beer or tamarind jarritos, but only had a couple Snapples, waters, coke, sprite, citrus jarritos, and an Italian citrus. Will like to come back to try more of the menu. Took me a while to figure out how they charge. ‍ Lesson learned, just eat and enjoy. ETA - simpler way to interpret the combo pricing: Make it a combo for $5 more, adds a drink and salad

Gypsy's offers solid pasta for an unbeatable price. If you're balling on a budget and have a craving for pasta, Gypsy's is the way to go. My favorite pasta there is the Gamberi e Capesante which is a linguine with creamy tomato sauce and hella shrimps and scallops. The amount of seafood they put on there for $16 (cash) is surprising. I always ask for extra pepper flakes on the side since I love my food spicy. They also serve bread and garlic confit with every pasta dish- it's okay. The service there is quick and efficient. The dining area is kinda packed, but there's outdoor seating as well. Make sure you bring cash because you'll get a mini discount! Overall, I wouldn't say this is the best pasta I've ever had, but it's good and mega value.

This was my go to as a college student. The pasta here is like no other. My favorite was the chicken Alfredo with broccoli and mushrooms. I've also tried their pizza and it is also good. The environment can me a bit caótica although that's just how it is in Berkeley.

LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THESE BEAUTIES. Omg I have never seen such ginormous yet juicy and steamy calzones in my life. We chose the pesto pasta stuffed calzones and each one lasted us three meals!! Upon dissecting the top layer, the aroma of fresh pesto wafted up and the cheese melted beautifully onto the plate. Even the leftovers were delicious. It's also in such a prime spot of Berkeley; we saw many UCB students walk over for a quick bite before returning to campus. Plenty of seating space, cashier was very nice and explained the menu to us thoroughly.

needed a plc to eat at berkeley and GYPSY'S was among the highly rated recommendations on my for you page. came at 7pm on a saturday. it was super packed, but i later found out that it was UC Berkeley's game day! shop is not too hard to find, very small, abt 10 tables inside. cash/card accepted! order took abt 7 minutes. GODFATHER'S FAVORITE ($15) was one of the most popular. made with simple ingredients all listed on menu! fair portion of chicken, which was slightly dry inside. pancetta was a great touch. order was PIPING HOT and sauce was super creamy/thick! i would recommend some pepper/salt to taste. pastas come with a nicely toasted slice of bread. overall, okay portion for the price. not somewhere i'd back to come back to often tho. despite not being the best pasta i've had, i'd still encourage anyone to try it in the berkeley area.

Where have I been?! Quick service made to order pasta...umm yes please! Parking can be hard to find but worth it. Seating is limited but is an option. This place gets busy and it's worth it!

This is Italian food on drugs. Came here early on a weekend and I loved the style of store which is a no-frills pasta place. Remember to bring cash as it is around $1 cheaper across all dishes. You order at the counter before sitting down first-come first-serve. I ordered Gypsy's Chicken and it came with the biggest bowl of pasta. It kind of reminded me of the cheap pasta eats in NYC except the pasta here actually tastes good. I especially liked the mushrooms that soaked up all the sauce and the quantity of chicken in this dish. The bread on top with the fresh garlic sitting in the middle was also a great surprise. I was not able to finish the pasta, the portion sizes were huge. Overall, great place for fast, cheap pasta. Definitely will be back to try more of their other varieties.
